This book was definitely a lot more serious than the previous books. The trauma Nan endured before returning to Willow Springs was heartbreaking. She struggles for most of the book to overcome fear and flashbacks, much like the vets suffering from addictions and PTSD working Dan's ranch. The book seems to focus more on overcoming that trauma through BDSM scenes and they're not easy to hear when we see that she's struggling.
If you've read the previous books they had a lighter approach outside of the danger each heroine faced from someone in their not-so-distant past. The scenes were hot and there was humor thrown in throughout the book. But that wasn't the case with this book. I found it hard to listen to the scenes simply because of Nan's flashbacks during them. I get it was necessary to tell this story, it just seemed out of place given the way the author wrote the other books. It wasn't bad necessarily, just unexpected and a bit of a downer.
The danger does end kind of abruptly. But that should be predicable now given it's how all the previous books ended. I'm glad Nan and Dan finally expressed their feelings since it was painfully obvious throughout the book that they were beyond the just friends and playmates they pretended to be. I just wish it hadn't taken the entire book to get to that point.
Towards the end, all the other Doms (including some already in committed relationships from previous books), punish Nan for keeping quiet about what happened to her in New Orleans. I honesty wasn't a big fan of that since it seems like it would be awkward/uncomfortable for their women to see their men touching another woman in an intimate place. Maybe that's just me, but I expected a hands off approach for the men once they were with their one and only woman. That's what any alpha man I've ever seen written would do. It just irked me.

But in order to get past her trauma, Nan needs to learn to trust again -- especially the friends who love her, like Dan.
A lot of times in romance novels (in general), especially BDSM ones, abuse, rape and sexual violence aren't shown with the serious, traumatic psychological consequences they would have in real life. Nan has spent months working on overcoming her PTSD and still has a long ways to go, and while love does help save her, it's not the end all, fix everything solution it can sometimes be in other novels. This book is not just a romance, but a thoughtful exploration of trauma, recovery, and the power of love and friendship.

I liked Nan & Dan's story. Good characters. In some ways I could relate to Nan. This was a new author for me. I'm voluntarily leaving an honest review for a copy of the book via booksprout.

This is probably my favorite in the series so far. I knew that getting either Nan or Dan past their respective refusals of a permanent partnership would take a lot of work, however I was really looking forward to seeing it happen. This book had some of the same issues that bothered me in previous books of the series, such as the use of BDSM as reward/punishment of secret-keeping. I both loved and didn’t the way Nan’s trauma and subsequent PTSD is handled in this book. I loved that it showed how innocuous things can be triggers, that the support of people who love you can be valuable tools, and what I appreciated the most was that it didn’t suggest that sex would solve all her problems. I wasn’t so fond of the fact that there wasn’t a mental health professional shown being involved in any part of her recovery. I also would have liked to see a better trigger warning in the blurb. I do like the author’s writing and I particularly liked that this story focused as much on the leading couple’s friendship outside of the club as it did their steamy encounters in it.

Great addition to the Submitting series. Nan is trying to recover from the violent physical abuse at the hands of a Dom and returns home until she has to testify at his trial. She tries to get back her self confidence and Dan is the one Dom who can help but the terrors she has to overcome are major. As in most romance stories, this one had its own HEA but there are a lot of tense moments and anxiety before that happens. It is a great story and I would highly recommend it as a great read.

Helping Nan to recover
I thought this story had a lot more going for it than the others with regards to relationships. The focus was split between the domination scenes and the friendship between Nan and Dan.
Nan, who has appeared in all the books in the series, had gone to New Orleans for a holiday. She was visiting her brother for a few weeks, but stayed away for ten months. With absolutely no contact whatsoever, her friends, including Dan, cannot fathom the reason, when a changed Nan suddenly reappears. Dan sets out to get to the bottom of what he realises has been some sort of traumatic event.

Nan returns home tow Willow Springs but she isn’t the same woman who left ten months ago. While on vacation she endured something, she isn’t willing to share with her friends. Dan knows something is wrong and wants to help her, will she let me in? This is a fast-paced emotional read with lots of drama and suspense. The characters are amazing and the story draws you in from the beginning. I loved it.

What a great addition to a new series, Cowboy Doms. There are several authors that as soon as I see a new book by them, I can’t wait to read, and Ms. BJ Wane is one of those authors. She has a way of spinning a tale, with a great cast of characters, and wonderful dialog and interaction. Her women are strong, feisty, and her men are dominant alphas, making for a perfect combination.
The story is an emotional roller-coaster ride, one with regrets, fear, anger, angst, and also of strength and the determination to take back the life that was stolen. It is the difference between forced submission and safe, sane, and consensual in a BDSM relationship. The story has some mystery, suspense, and danger scenes, but it also has the comradery of friends, of lovers, and hometown goodness. While it has the good, the bad, and the ugly of life, it proves that good can win over evil and that love is stronger than fear.

I’ve officially hit the point where I’m binging this series, and this is my fourth book in a row—which should tell you everything you need to know. These are all under 200 pages, so they’re quick reads, but they don’t feel shallow. The spice is frequent and very well done, and the characters keep me invested enough to immediately pick up the next one.
This one focuses on Nan and Dan, who we’ve already gotten to know a bit from the previous books. Nan owns a tea shop and is part of the BDSM club “The Barn,” and up until now she’s been very noncommittal—open, free, and pairing with different Doms without getting attached. Dan, a lawyer and ranch owner, has had a similar vibe, and the two of them have this easy dynamic both inside the club and as vanilla friends.
But this book flips everything.
At the end of the previous book, Nan mentions she’s going to New Orleans for a few weeks… except she disappears for nearly a year and cuts off all communication. When she finally comes back, it’s revealed she went through something genuinely traumatic involving a Dom she trusted. That shift in tone hits hard, and I think the author handled the aftermath really well.
What I liked most was how the story focused on Nan’s PTSD and how it affected her ability to return to a space that used to feel safe. The panic attacks felt believable, especially in contrast to how confident and carefree she used to be. I’ll add that I’m not an abuse survivor, so I can’t speak from personal experience—but nothing about it felt dismissive or rushed to me. It actually added a lot of emotional weight to the story.
And Dan stepping in—not in a pushy way, but in a “something’s wrong and I’m not ignoring it” way—was honestly one of the strongest parts of the book.
Their relationship development felt natural. It didn’t come out of nowhere—they already had a foundation—but this is where it deepens into something more emotional and grounded. Watching them work through her trauma and realize their feelings for each other added a lot more weight than just another spicy installment.
I will say the antagonist was pretty easy to guess early on, but honestly? It didn’t take away from the story for me. This book was way more about the emotional journey and recovery than the mystery.
Overall, this one had more depth than I expected going in, while still delivering on the spice and character dynamics I’ve been loving from the series. Definitely one of my favorites so far.

Nan left Willow Springs to stay with her brother in New Orleans for three weeks that turned into months. Dan missed her so much and couldn’t understand why she just left. Nan is now back in Willow Springs trying to get her life back in order after her ordeal. She was going to reopen her tea shop her girlfriends came into the shop and questioned her. Nan ran into Dan at the diner. Her once molten feeling around him was cool in part to her ordeal with Gerard who was now in jail until he made bail. Nan went back to the Barn because she knew it may help her. All her friends were there and they welcomed her back. Dan tried his best but for some reason she resisted his touch. Nan was having a rough time trying to get in the swing of things. She remembers the brutality of Gerard her last Dom and what had happened. Dan has made it his mission to find out who did this to her. Nan was feeling just a little better talking to Dan but still hasn’t told him all of what really happened. Nan decides and starts to tell him how she met Gerard. Nan keeps finding things out of whack in her house plus other strange occurrences. Dan is helping Nan to slowly come back to him and their friends. The nights at the Barn had helped her a lot under Dan’s supervision. Twist, turns, kidnapping and attempted murder makes this an exciting book.

Honestly, I was hesitant to download this story because I was thinking it would be another generic storyline with a lot of BDSM, which don’t get me wrong up until now I was REALLY enjoying. I was new to BJ Wane and the Cowboy Dons series was new to me, however by the time you get to the 4th book your like how many times are you going to run from crazy family members. Are the dominant males going to keep resisting submitting to the ladies, because let’s face it they’re all scared of committing.😂🙄😂Again don’t get me wrong I love the stories I do, but it gets stale at the “Barn” by this book and even the lawyer Dan says it in the book which made me crack up laughing.🤣🤣Anyway this book blew me away!!!!!I hate spoiling the story, but it was so creative, original, and interesting. I loved every minute of it and I couldn’t put it down….😍💕💕😃

The heroine is the sweet, sassy, sexy, and beautiful Nan, who experiences a trauma that may change her life forever. Together, they have to re-build their relationship, starting with communication and ending with trust.
The narration is still done by Natalie Bradshaw but she’s an old hat by now so if you’re not used to her by now you’re not going to be. 🤷🏽♀️😂🤩I’ve definitely heard worse, she does a great job with the series.

If you've been following the "Cowboy Doms" series, then you'll remember Dan Shylock. He's the lawyer that moved into town, bought the ranch, and then became part of "The Barn". Of course, Nan runs the tea shop in town, she's also one of Tamara's best friends and has been since they were teenagers. She and Dan make the perfect partners at The Barn. They have that unique relationship of being intuned to each other as play partners in a scene and friends with an easy camaraderie anywhere else. That was until Nan took a two week trip to New Orleans to visit her brother that turned into ten months. At that time no one heard from her. All their texts and calls were answered by her brother in very short and cryptic answers. After ten months when she did return to Willow Springs, Nan wasn't the same vivacious person that left. Dan would know if anyone would, and he wanted answers and intended to get them. Before I go on with my review, let me just say, there could be triggers in this book. They are deep, dark, and did make my heart stutter and blood run cold but the love and care of friends, including one special Dom, and the determination of one submissive, there is a very happy ending. I loved this story and just had to sigh with contentment by the time it said 'The End.'

Lawyer up!
I always felt that Dan and Nan had a litlle something, something more than just their hookups at the club. I don't think they really realized how they actually felt about each other.
Nan has undergone a life changing incident that leaves her traumatized, lost and disconnected from her previous lifestyle.
After a long unexplained absence she returns home where everyone notices a difference in her that she tries to hide and deny.
Dan is persistant and starts to realize what he might have almost lost forever. With a lot of guidance, caring, domming and the help and acceptance from her friends Nan finds joy in her lifestyle and love were she never expected to find it!
This is a fantastic series, so well written! Yes there is chemistry. Sexy BDSM scenes, some danger, mystery and more. But ultimately it is about love and acceptance and self forgiveness.
I think this book is my fave so far (probably till the next one comes out, lol).

Not a good Dom for handling the sub's situation
Submitting to the Lawyer is the first book I have read by BJ Wane and I liked the author's writing and story telling styles. As this book is the fourth in the Cowboy Doms series I was not sure if there would be characters and story details that I would not be able to follow but find that to be an issue. The story-line was interesting but there were some things that just did not ring true or even remotely what a real Dom would think, or should think and do. So for me this was not a great first introduction to BJ Wane. But I will read another book or two before making up my mind about the author, as I am hoping it was just this one book that did not work for me.
But remember that just because I am not a fan of Submitting to the Lawyer does not mean that other readers won't love it. After all we all have our own tastes.

This is the 4th book in the Cowboy Doms series and I have been waiting for Dan and Nan's book for a long while. I knew it would be explosive but had no idea it would be anything like this. Nan went back home to visit her brother in New Orleans and while she was there she wanted to visit a kink club. So she explored some and thought she was being smart but ended up getting hurt. She comes back home to Montana but doesn't any of her friends least of all her Dom what happened. She is as skittish as a new kitten and jumpy too. Weird things are happening around her and she still doesn't open up about her past. This book was so believable to me as a woman who has lived this. I started reading and thought holy moly she is writing part of my life. It does have abuse so be aware, but it is answered too. We get to see many familiar faces from The Barn and around town and see new ones too.
I am looking forward to the next book in this series which is waiting for me to crack it open.

3.75 Stars. This is the first book of this series I have read, so I had no background on the characters. I don’t read many BDSM books, as I can’t relate to the spanking and the use of a flogger. All the plots seem to be very similar. Well, this book has an original storyline, one that is dark and intense, yet caring. It’s a story of friendship and new beginnings. The love story is almost secondary, as Dan tries to help his friend and sub, Nan, recover from a horrific ordeal at the hands of a madman. I am not sure a trained psychologist would agree with Dan’s methods, but Dan would do anything for Nan. This book put the Dom/Sub relationship into a new perceptive for me. It also illustrated quite vividly what is not a Dom/Sub relationship.

Mysterious and Healing
This was a very interesting story. It almost felt like Nan needed her Lawyer and a few others... A bodyguard or two. It was an interesting scene with multiple Doms reinforcing her need to trust... Her Lawyer. Oh but I can not wait to read about the Dude ranch FBI duet... they played a bit more of a role in Nan's story being in several scenes with her not all ended as expected. These ladies in this Montana town all need to learn to shoot... its excellent for the adventure and excitement of the story, but gosh maybe one of the Doms could get stalked and held captive for a change and the Ladies could rescue him... just teasing... the story is really pretty good... I liked it even though I wasn't as excited at the beginning.

Another interesting treatment for trauma
Poor Nan! I was so looking forward to her story. Her character was so mischievously fun. I really liked her. Then we get to her book only to find out her short visit to her brother's didn't go as planned. I wasn't surprised that it was Master Dan who stepped up. They have been too close to be "just friends". He was so patient with her helping her work through her trauma. The resolution was wonderful also helping Pete with his trauma. However, I found that epilogue a bit too wham-bam-thank-you-maam for my satisfaction. I mean I loved the support and all, but we didn't get a verdict! Though that does leave me to imagine the key being thrown away and the sob getting his from fellow inmates. Yeah,that works for me.

This is the long awaited story of Nan and Dan. Nan has been gone for 10 months trying to get past the abuse she suffered at the hands of a crazy dom. She has come back to Willow Springs in hopes of finishing her recovery. Unfortunately, it isn't that simple for her. When Dan sees Nan, he wants her. Once he realizes something is wrong he wants to help her. Add in a mystery and this book has everything. I enjoyed catching up with the couples we met in the last 3 books. You do not need to read the first books to enjoy this book. It works well as a stand alone.

Nan and Dan (gotta love the rhyming names) are long time friends and frequent play partners. Neither of the inclined to have a more permanent relationship. Coming home after a mysteriously long absence, she's not exactly forthcoming with answers to everyone's questions. Reliving her nightmare is not something that she wants to do but she struggles everyday. Dan is very observant and quickly figures out something went very wrong while she's away. Ever so slowly he coaxes the story from her and gives he the comfort and feeling of safety that she needs to heal.

Still, these two pairing off, is a sweet payoff for series familiars.

4.5 stars. My favourite book so far in this series! This one definitely had the most well developed story in my opinion, with the least annoying characters. My only complaint with this book (and frankly this entire series) was that it ends too soon! I feel like the whole book worked up to the part about who was sabotaging Nan but that part was only 3-4 pages! And the epilogue was so short it was almost pointless.
