But not for me. I was designed not to feel emotion. It kept me controlled. It made me a monster.
Until I got a taste of what I was missing.
Tortured and plagued by my bloody past, I can't let anyone in. They don't want to see the monster lurking inside. The darkness that gnaws at my mind, threatening to consume me.
But the past has a way of creeping in when you least expect.
When that happens, I find myself turning to the infuriating dragon I've sworn to keep at a distance. But as my secrets spill from the shadows, I don't know if I'm prepared to pay the price my confessions will demand.
Shannon Pemrick is a full-time USA Today bestselling author of slow-burn romantic fantasy, fuller-time geek, and dragon obsessed. She also has too many novelty mugs, not enough chocolate, and a forbidden love-affair with all things shiny. When she's not burning her fingers across a keyboard handing out adventures and HEAs, she's rolling dice and getting lost in RPGs or searching for brides for her dragon overlords.
I’m really enjoying Shannon Pemrick’s Experimental Heart series, and Secrets, it’s third book, is a great addition. Eira is such a perfectly beautiful flawed character, a tortured soul with a bloody past, and a wonderful lead for this tale. Former assassin, now “reformed” and ambassador for the rebellion fighting the tyrant Zarda, she has a huge number of tasks on her plate (including, by the way, a still growing relationship with the shape-shifting dragon, Raikidan). How she handles all of this makes for a stellar story that’s truly well written with its fantastic supporting cast band a plot that’s both strong in itself and a strong contribution to the overall story line. But for the fact that I’m literally dictating this review to my husband from my hospital bed I could go on and on with praises - the book definitely deserves it. Since I can’t do that I will simply note that the book is most definitely one to read, it is easy to highly recommend. I’m definitely looking forward to the next book in this series.
I really am in love with this series though book 3 unfortunately has a huge number of grammatical mistakes that does get frustrating after a while so I think the author should look into a new editor. Other than that it is pretty much impossible to put these books down.
I was given an ARC copy of this book in exchange for an honest review
"The truth was, I was alone in this world. Alone. It's what I was meant to be. There were no lies here. No betrayal. No pain. It was safe."
After many inner struggles that haven't ended yet, Eira is starting to realize (or better, admit) feelings that she thought she couldn't have anymore. But she's not the only one: between some her friends new bonds -of love, friendship, envy- are starting being created. However they can't distract themselves too much- not when Zarda seems to be always one step before them, manipulating anything and anyone and creating new dangerous weapons.
- Despite the massive presence of love-related scenes (included a quite "hot" one) usually makes me quite annoyed, in this particular case it didn't. In fact they were often funny (Ryoko should really found an organization creating new couples!) and useful to discover new aspects of the characters, in particular Eire and Rai. Yes, finally some really interesting news about my favourite dragon's past... and some "traditions" of his race that left Eira and me quite stunned! On the other hand I found the action parts a little bit disorganized, or better, not very well linked. Of course part of the fault is the Council's, which is still not willing to use a more direct approch, but I think there should be a fixer structure (attack and counter-attack or something like this), otherwise the story becomes a bit dispersive.
- Let me continue talking about the characters. As I said before, more and more information is coming out, and some really left me astonished! Eira is even a more complex character than I though, and if my assumption is right she's really unique (and freakingly powerful)! She's calmer than in "Pieces", maybe because she has realized that she can't deny every single emotion she feels and because she knows more things than before, in particular about some "random hottie dragon". Have I already said that I LOVE Raikidan? I'll repeat it one more time in any case. In the previous book I was a bit worried since there was something off about him and I missed his cheerful and playful attitude, which gladly comes back in this book. I appreciated very much discovering more about his past, his family and his dragon-like attitudes.
- The only one thing that I appreci(h)ated (yes, it's an attempt to make a pun) is the cliffhanger at the end. It surely makes me craving for the following book (that I will absolutely read), but at the same time it left me a bit disappointed as there are too many unsolved questions.
I was so excited then Shannon sent me a message and asked if I wanted to read the next book in the Experimental Heart Series. I have read and reviewed the last two books for this blog, so I am sure you guys remember me talking about them. In this book we move further into the depths that define the character Eira. A Nu-Human that was made to be an assassin, she is not like your ordinary strong female character. Instead she is quirky, awkward and can not handle normal emotions well. But that doesn't stop her from getting the help of a handsome Dragon named Raikidan who I believe to a very important character in this series. Together they fight with the help of some friends to shake the city free of an evil leader.
I believe in this book Eira has come to some understand that she must accept the feelings that she has for Rai and her friends. I think even though she accepted the emotions, she is still scared which left me in a devastating cliffhanger. That now has me sitting on the edge of my seat waiting for the next book to come out. This book is full of action and some cute romance moments.
Recently I have become more comfortable with MPOV books, I think that Shannon does a great job in this book including other characters POV. They didn't seem out of place and it felt like they were able to complete the scene instead. It has been a fun journey so far reading these books and learning more and more about these characters. In fact I even bought my sister the first book so she can read them too. The first book is only 0.99, so go and grab it and start this series with me. I'm sure you won't regret it.
