NO GOOD DEED GOES UNHIRED
The Eisner Award winning team of John Allison and Max Sarin return to the world of Giant Days for a new series about everyone’s favorite child detective; Charlotte Grote.
Nineteen year old Charlotte Grote has her whole life ahead of her; headed straight to Oxford and a future as a real detective—until she’s framed for murder!
Given the choice between going to jail basically forever or joining the police, Lottie decides to hit the beat, all while trying to find the real murderer. Lottie may have been running rings about the police since her 9th birthday, but she’s never been on this side of the security tape.
Could the future of law enforcement be 5’2” with an extremely strong bangs game?
I saw this on Hoopla and thought I would take a 29 page one issue taste of this new series by John Allison and Max Sarin featuring nineteen-year-old Charlotte Grote, who was/is going to Oxford to become a detective but along this yellow brick road gets framed for murder. The team would still seem to be in sync for the hijinks and humor, but my 3.5 stars rounds down because I was not yet convinced, but could be. Allison is just one of the funniest writers in comics, so there's that in his favor.
I had no idea this existed but when I stumbled upon it on Hoopla I squealed with joy and immediately smashed the borrow button. Some of you may already know, but if you are new here (hello, welcome!) but I am a huge Giant Days fan. When I was searching around on Hoopla one night this came up under John Allison's name (he is the creator of Giant Days), I clicked on it immediately interested (I know he has one other new series out currently, but I have not seen it available anyplace yet to try). After reading the summary, I learned that Charlotte from Giant Days was our main character and she was a detective! I knew I had to read this ASAP, so I smashed the borrow button and started my read.
SPOILERS AHEAD
Charlotte is about to head off to college but before she does there is one thing she has always wanted to do, win one of the teen detective awards. Charlotte has been an amateur detective for a long time but she has never been nominated for her work. That is until this year, the last year she could possibly be a nominee in the teen category! Charlotte and her best friend head off to the awards, where they meet a bunch of other teen detectives as well as other people famous in the detective world. However, during the awards ceremony, Charlotte ends up wrapped up in a crime that maybe she can't even solve!
I really enjoyed this graphic novel! I loved getting a little more time with a character I love so much (and someone I will miss dearly when I finish the Giant Days series). I know there are a few other volumes of this series currently out and I am so excited to get to them and see where this series goes. I am hoping they continue with Charlotte's story even after these first few volumes that are out because I love seeing some of the other characters from Giant Days in their element! Additionally, I love the art style in this volume so much! I highly recommend picking this graphic novel up (and if you have Hoopla it may even be on there)!
**You definitely do not need to read the Giant Days series before reading this one or even finish that series before reading this one.
C’mon, Lottie was more savvy at the beginning of Bad Machinery! Maybe the tricks and fakery are leveled up now, but she fell for that wayyyy too easily. And I can’t get used to the Max Sarin drawing style for her either. But the Little Claire addition was fun - how about the rest of the cast...?
Reading this #1 issue to tide myself over until the paperback collection comes out.... I have a deep love for Giant Days so I'm ready to snap up anything else by John Allison to fill the Esther-Daisy-Susan-shaped hole in my heart. I do dislike reading single issues because they're so short and so hard to get a feel for what's going on, but this shot off the starting block by being completely ridiculous and doubling down on its premise of being set in the world of kid sleuths and their wacky competitiveness. I was a little uncomfortable about the murder at the end, and I'll have to see how it plays out to really decide if it was super gross or not. Hoping they will pull it off.
Wicked Things is the latest new series from a creative team many of you will recognize! John Allison and Max Sarin, the creators behind Giant Days, are once again working together to bring us a charming and fascinating new series. They’ll be working alongside artists such as Whitney Cogar and Jim Campbell too, so that is even more exciting.
Charlotte Grote is nineteen years old, and she’s running out of time to get attention for being a teenage sleuth. After all, only one more year and she will officially no longer be a teen. Unfortunately, that quickly becomes the least of her problems.
You see, Charlotte Grote is about to be framed for a murder. Yes, the irony is strong in that situation. But it does force her hand nonetheless. And that is where our series begins.
Hence the reason I love the volume rather than the issue because I wanted more right away and alas, Hoopla has Wicked Things as issues, so I was only have to get through four issues (there are two more on Hoopla) and I need to wait and I don't think I can because I adore this one like I adore the likes of Jonesy, Goldie Vance, and Heavy Vinyl-- it is fun, smart, witty, and well-drawn.
The artwork enhances the story including the immensely entertaining facial expressions and body talk of the characters in understanding what's happening and setting the mood. Likewise, the storyline is as much about having a good time as it is in capturing the attention of the true crime fans of the world-- so Lottie, the fabulous teen detective is in the running for an award for her work and is ultimately framed for a murder at the event itself. Easy to follow and cliche for the entertainment value and room for the authors and illustrations to enjoy themselves while putting it together and sharing it with the world. It doesn't take itself seriously.
OK, so apparently I still need to read Bad Machinery but this stands nicely on it's own. I like the whole washed up teen detective vibe, even more relevant with the new incarnation of Nancy Drew gracing our screens. I'm thinking this will be a lot of fun. Though Charlotte should have seen she was being set up!
Cover Art: 🥕🥕🥕 Title: 🥕 Review: 🥕🥕🥕 🐰 The art style is cute so far. I'm curious to see how this progresses. The backgrounds are very detailed but right now the story is lacking in holding my attention. I will consider reading the entire series, depending on how the second volume plays out. Format: Hoopla Date Read: October 23, 2022🐇
Plot Esther's little sister from Giant Days is about to enter uni, but happens to be a nominee for a young sleuth award. She and her best friend take the train and find themselves in a gorgeous hotel surrounded by other teen sleuths who are actually quite rude. When the awards show begins, Esther gets framed for committing a crime.
Review This is fun so far. I'll read more if it comes up in Hoopla. The friend looks way older than Charlotte, but otherwise I liked the art.
Thought id like this bc i like everything by John Allison but i don't. It stressed me out...farces and framings are always top level story stress. Didnt love. Would have given a 1.5 if i didnt love Mr Allison so.
Charlotte was such an entertaining character to follow and I really do hope that this series continues especially after that cliffhanger. I do like that even though murder is what kicked off the story. I like how we got to explore other aspects of Charlotte and getting to see her growth and talent.
