Sarjan toisessa osassa tarinan eri henkilöt jatkavat eri lokaatioissa. Marko Eldfelt kumppaneineen pakenee Naamioita, Krieg-olento tallustaa omaa reittiään kohti Osloa, De Torquemada on palannut reissultaan muuttuneena eikä Diego tiedä mitä siitä ajattelisi. Marko löytää määränpäästään asioita joihin on vaikea suhtautua.

The second book of this breakneck action/sci-fi series lives up to the standards set in the first.

This review ought to begin with an explanation of why I have given Speilets bakside (translation: The Mirror’s Back Side) a two-star rating – a rating of “it’s ok” according to Goodreads’ system – particularly since I do think it’s a novel that is worth reading. (This also goes for the rest of the series.) What detracted from my reading experience was that I felt unable to get close to the world and the characters, like they never became “real” to me. But every other review I have found online either didn’t touch on that aspect or they praised the novel precisely for what I found that it lacked. In other words, my misgivings are clearly my own and will likely not be relevant to most readers.

The books of the series feel more like the volumes of a single novel rather than a trilogy. At the very moment that one book ends the following begins, leaving the reader with no pause. The pulse of the story quickly rises to HRmax in Huset mellom natt og dag (translation: The House Between Night and Day) and stays there until Den lengste dagen, (translation: The Longest Day) passes its climax. Because of this I will not provide any information on he plot, whatever I could have said would have given some kind of spoiler as to where the first book ends. It is better advice for the potential reader to look up the synopsis of the first book and then decide whether or not to read it. Those who have already read the first book knows where this one begins and so have no need for any introduction.

This kind of high-octane blend of science fiction and action found its heyday during the 80’s and 90’s, with movies such as Total Recall, Independence Day, The Fifth Element, and Terminator; it is an old, highly esteemed genre which has produced quite a few movies that rank among the most essential of their era. This genre is no longer as prevalent as it was and I suspect this might have something to do with how difficult it became to produce new material that lived up to these high standards. But I think Marco Eldfell’s (eld- is pronounced like held without the 'h') adventure does live up to them, or at least would have if they were set to film.

My issues with this series – i.e. my difficulty in connecting with the characters and the setting – stems from the pace it keeps and the challenges a written medium faces in maintaining it while at the same time providing depth, which usually requires a reduction in pace. Movies are visual mediums and are therefore more apt to multitask, which is often paraphrased as ‘a picture is worth a thousand words.’ It is not impossible for text to achieve something akin to this, but it is far more demanding to pull off. This series does not attempt to do so, preferring instead a style commonly used in thrillers, one that focuses heavily on visualization in order to keep the reader involved in the movement, the action, that is currently taking place. This choice is made at the cost of characterization, but it is a huge advantage to the drive that pushes the plot forward. And when the author masters this style as well as they do then it is hard to fault them for using it.

The Mirror’s Back Side has everything the first book had. There is none of that dip in quality which is often seen in the middle book of a trilogy.¹ Those who liked The House Between Night and Day will, if I’m not mistaken, like this book too for the very same reasons that they liked that one. Note, though, that there is a short (and partially free) prequel called Stjernefall (translation: Star Fall) and I find that its proper place in the reading order is between the first two books. It contains some of the world building I was looking for and drastically improves upon our knowledge of 2038, one of the important side-characters, hence I view it as important for the potential reader of this book to read that one first.

1. It does suffer a little in the editing department. Typos, the occasional odd formulation, times where the author could safely have provided more information, yet decided against it presumably in fear of revealing things that should still remain a secret – to mention a few admittedly minor issues. The Mirror’s Back Side was the last book Vendetta Forlag published before going out of business, which I expect must have played a part here since there were no such faults in the first book. But I feel it is wrong to presume that the staff of Vendetta is at fault here. On the contrary, it appears to me that this book was almost never published and if it hadn’t been for their dedication the series would have ended there. Even after Vendetta had closed its doors, they sought to find another publisher to pass on the torch to so that the trilogy could be finished. On that note, the current publisher, Gyldendal Forlag, has also reprinted the two first books and I do not know if some of the issues have been rectified in that edition.

Erinomainen trilogian toinen osa.

Rinnakkaiset tarinan säikeet kulkevat omia polkujaan, jotka mitä ilmeisimmin yhdistyvät päätösosassa.

Erilaisten todellisuuksien pohtiminen luo uusia ajatuksia, kuten sci-fin pitääkin.

If I had remembered more from the first book in what is to be a triology, mayby I had liked it better. But have said that, it is ofcourse because it was so unitressed that i did'nt rembember anything from the first book: "Huset mellom natt og dag", or in english: "The house between night abd day". This followup: "The backside of the mirror" tell someting about the plot, without saying anything more.
