From its fanservice heavy debut, this series has come a remarkably long way. I was pleasantly surprised (and relieved) by the resolution of the cat arc, but even more so by the increasing emotional content that gives the series a very real, warm heart. Who knew that Hana would go from boob gag to center of Miko's emotional world?
Miko is trying to muster up the strength to face these ghost. After going through a haunted house like area with her friends she finally takes the first step forward. The rest of the volume deals with Zen, the creepy looking teacher from the last volume, and we get to get his past and find out if he's really kidnapping cats and murdering them.
This is a great volume with a lot of awesome shots. The art is really selling this series so far but this one also has two massive twist. One is like "Whoa, nice" and the other lingers and makes you try to guess what it means. I really loved both and without giving it away, added to two characters at the same time.
I can't recommend this series enough for horror fans and supernatural fans with a little bit of comedy thrown in. A 5 out of 5.
As a pet lover, specifically a cat lover, I was a little worried where this one would go. Since my partner read it and enjoyed it, I shouldn't have worried. Anything truly bad that happens is implied and not explicit in the story.
I liked how this story had a bit of a twist, and that it had a horror-like ending where there was , and that those revelations were also an important part of the story in hindsight. This arc was a little sentimental, for a fairly obvious reason, and I'm curious how much I'll enjoy it once (or if) cats are no longer a central story element.
Miko’s new teacher just happens to be the evil guy surrounded by ghost cats who tried to take a cat she found. While she’s trying to figure him out, Yuria notices something strange is going on with Hana. Miko’s tried to just ignore the spirits around her, but does she have much choice if Hana’s being threatened?
Trigger warning for, as you might expect, implied animal abuse.
I literally just finished saying that Bloom Into You was the only manga that’s ever made me cry and then this comes along and very, very nearly makes me have to go and edit that statement. It was close - there are two panels here that were just really incredibly touching to me. Ah, pets.
For something that started out as a weird ecchi-adjacent grope book, it’s crazy how good Mieruko-Chan has gotten. This volume is dedicated to the looming threat of the new teacher and it’s a real belter. Why is he so mean to cats? Why is Miko being warned not to look at him? What is happening to poor Hana?
All is explained and I love how this book juggles traditional teenager goofing around with its more horrific elements - the scene where Miko is trying to hide in the bathroom and is menaced by a spirit is actually pretty amusing and has a fun capper.
And amidst all this, Miko is being forced to accept that she can’t simply ignore the creatures she’s seen and continues to see. Between the threat to Hana and the things only Yuria can perceive, she’s realizing that ‘ignorance is bliss’ only goes so far. When she stands up for herself, finally, it’s great stuff. Especially during the needlessly convoluted and hilarious donut quest the girls go on (everybody is amazing in this whole side story, it’s great).
Of course, Miko doesn’t have any actual powers and her bold new stance also costs her some of the supernatural protection that she had earned in the last volume. I’m very interested to see what’s going to happen with that next volume - one of the threats just comes right out of nowhere and illustrates the danger Miko’s in during a very creepy sequence.
There’s so much worth talking about. Yuria gets the short shrift, sadly, although the panel of her head being mashed by Hana’s breasts is depressingly funny. She does show what she brings to the table in between her tsundere moments and is critical in forcing Miko to acknowledge what’s going on and getting her to take action against it.
Hana and Miko are both fun and they’re such great friends to watch palling around. Hana has always been a food monster, but the extremes it goes to in this volume would put a hobbit to shame. The three of them form a great dynamic together.
I’m avoiding the main storyline because it’s very good and has a couple of twists and one seriously messed up relationship that deserve to be experienced fresh, in my opinion. The first twist might be a little easy to guess, but the one that caps off the story and the volume is a little bit of ‘just right’ to finish the tale.
5 stars, adjust down if implied animal cruelty is not your thing. I said last volume I wouldn’t be rating these books higher until I was sure the series was still improving. So apparently that was the cue for it to blow my expectations away. It’s probably closer to 4 or 4.5, but I could never rate anything that makes me tear up and tells such a good, twisty story any less.
no sexualization in this volume at all, which already a huge comparison to volume 1!
the story in this volume is very very sweet. we need more overarching stories like this connecting back to characters like the teacher. miko had a lot of character development in this volume, and so did yuria right at the end. love this volume, i wish my library would hurry up and give me volume 4.
Surprise! There's a plot, and I'm not only extremely interested, I'm emotionally invested in Mieruko's safety and her relationship with Hana. There's still a bit of fanservice - the man really loves showing the outline of panties - but it remains infrequent enough that I can ignore it and focus on the story. The monsters remain INCREDIBLY SPOOKY. I love it.

Another amazing volume. I really enjoyed the story with the new teacher. It was actually very sweet and it nice seeing Miko learn how to understand and use her abilities to help others. The haunted house event was hilarious. Miko laughing and finally being able to show fear towards something was really cute and funny. I loved so much about this volume and can't wait for the next one.
There are indeed some wholesome ghost cases, and I must admit now that I've read more about Mieruko's abilities and seeing her actively choosing to help her friends with it, I'm gonna finish reading the whole story.
Each volume is better than the previous. I was blown away by the reveal about the teacher and I love how the twin spirits played their role in the story so far.
This volume was probably my favorite so far. They’re all really good but I really liked what was revealed in this one. It was also funny (as they tend to be)! Definitely a good story and series.
Slice of life coupled with supernatural horror hits the spot! We get to learn a little bit more about how things work with Hana and her “ability” to attract all these creatures, and we learn some eye opening things about some of the other characters. Looking forward to future volumes. Hopefully we get to learn more about the things Miko sees (and why she sees them).
What a wild ride. The ghosties get somehow even creepier and Zen's little character arc was a really great twist, still not sure on him, very mysterious!
How will Miko continue with her 3 saves all used up? There's gotta be a Japanese ghost busters branch.. Right?
Much as I enjoy the art style used to bring Mieruko to life within this manga series, I genuinely hate the style done for the monsters and ghosts she's clairvoyant to. I judge manga novels based solely on their artwork and very little having to do with the plot, but my liking for Mieruko's style outweighs my dislike of the monsters' style, so I've read the first three books in this series and have little to no regrets about it.
Even though I like the way Mieruko is drawn, I'm critical of how many times she cries; if I took shots every single time Mieruko cried, I'd likely die of alcohol poisoning... However, I like how the plot if finally developing after two and a half books. One, Yuria has been brought into the story (she's an exorcist in the making, so to speak); two, Hana's innocence has a meaning for the story (more than just the basic cutesy character); and three, Mieruko is finally using her clairvoyance to help others. Like Mieruko, I also disliked the creepy teacher because I didn't trust him one bit, but once I read the parts about his flashbacks to childhood, growing up with an abusive mother (don't look at him) and seeing who he grew up to become instead of what his mother set up for him to grow into, I actually grew to like him, but nowhere near fictional crush levels. He's still strange to me, but I was happy Mieruko was able to help him and understand him on another (yes, even though he still thinks she's a weird student of his).
With eleven books in this entire series, I have a lot more to read that I look forward to so much. After I finish this review, I'm definitely going to order the rest of the volumes on my Kindle or something! Definitely read this series if you're into what I can only describe as M. Night Shyamalan's The Sixth Sense reimagining in the perspective of a teenage girl from Japan. I didn't realize just how much I'd grow to love this series, so it may surprise you as well! All I can say is, read this book now!
I simply love this series A mix of silly and horrific is the way of the world as main character Miko continues to see spirits of the most gruesome variants and continues to make excuses while trying to ignore them to the best of her ability. Whatever has granted her the ability to see death so profoundly we discover while her and Hana's new friend may not be able to see the worse of the spirits but she can see life auras unlike Miko making Miko's mysterious and sudden sight for ghost seem even darker wherever it came from.
Heading into Volume 3, Miko's will is becoming stronger and she is able to release some of the pressure of her situation and directly address a few of the spirits. Curious to see how this will play out. Highlights: - Hana's appetite continues to grow and Yuri is caught eating in the bathroom, which causes her to join with Miko and Hana for lunches. - The 3 girls go to a haunted house, where the prize for making it out is a box of 20 donuts. This leads to some very hilarious food-driven scenes, but also, Miko is able to stand up and address her fears for the first time, because that's something that would normally happen in a haunted house. - The "Don't Look at Him!" monster is very prevalent in their classroom, and is seemingly attached to their substitute teacher. When Miko follows him after school to investigate him, she discovers the monster is the spirit of his overprotective mother. After seeing how horrible it is affecting him (as well as being the source of Hana's extreme hunger), Miko stands up to the monster and asks her to leave her teacher alone. The monster chases after Miko and the protective spirits kill the mom-ster, which is the third and final time they will help.
Really liking this series. Looking forward to possibly watching the anime as well. Recommend.
OHHHH MAN!! This was a good volume! Way too good actually, haha. I love that we get more story and less shorts with monsters and Miko trying to get through her days. This time we have those inari/gods that are still around and Miko still has 2 chances (for what, we don't know, but it is probably not going to be good), we meet a guy we saw earlier and get a whole backstory + more on his which I loved and I guess one shouldn't judge a person by their looks (or what haunts them in this case as well). I loved that Miko fully went for it, because she knew things were affecting her friend, Hana. I loved that Julia and Miko are getting closer though really I wish they would just talk because there are some serious things going on. And there is so much more. I was scared out of my wits at times and thrilled with the way the story is going. I wasn't planning it... but I guess I will be reading the next volume as well. XD
THIS ONE IS CRAZY! I would rate it 6 stars if possible!!
A) The art *perfect* It's disturbing, descriptive but also playful; it's Perfect!
B) The plot is actually evolving, more characters are getting backstories and connecting
C) The main concept and action in this one is INSANE and I Loved every bit of it! (the last 3rd of the book)
D) I had to physically react in public many times Which I personally don't experience often and very much enjoyed! It was mainly because of the level of disturbingness that some of the monsters are getting, and the fact that they are actually interacting with not only Mieruko-chan, but also the reader via tricky perspective angles/drawings. Also, the gruesome backstory of the sensei loved/hated that too ;)
And it's only book 3!
So yeah, in love with this manga and can't wait for the story, art, and lore to continue!! :D
So I’ve been watching the anime and really enjoying it. I love the balance of creepy af ghosts with the humor of Miko’s reactions.
I couldn’t wait to see what happened next so I bought this volume of the manga (eventually I may buy the first two volumes).
This volume doesn’t really have the humor of the aired episodes of the anime (dunno if the anime is true to the manga or not). But it’s VERY creepy…. Didn’t really scare me but I can appreciate the designs and all.
It was interesting how our expectations were subverted here in a slightly different way than what I am used to from the anime… but now I may end up buying the next volume too bc I’m so incredibly curious as to what will happen with the god’s attendants/shrine maiden things, etc….
Content warning: Body horror, child abuse, car accident
This has to be my favorite volume so far. Despite being a slice-of-life, this series really shines when it tells one consistent story from start to finish.
We follow Zen, a new student with a dark past involving an overbearing mother who didn't allow him to experience childhood joys like friends and pets. He's haunted by possibly the grossest creature Miko's seen yet.
It's heartfelt, it's grounded. The way it presents moving on healing is also particularly effective. If you're a fan of cats, there are moments that are a bit grisly, but ultimately it's a happy ending.
Except for the part when Miko uses up her three wishes. That's stress-inducing.
This one should have come with a trigger warning...
I do feel like I'm going to start this one with the trigger warning, there are cats implied and caused harm during one of the story arcs in this volume. It's all off screen, but as a cat lover I really hate the fact that so many horror stories hurt cats. It's almost a given that if you see a cat in a horror story it's going to die. That being said, spoiler they get the killer. That's the only reason why I didn't deduct any stars. Some cats were saved.
Overall the story is still going strong and is still very good. I'm looking forward to reading the rest and even more exciting I found out they made an anime which I planned to watch soon. I'll finish reading first though.
Poor Mieruko, and poor Hana, too! She doesn't even realize what's going on, yet it seems Hana is a very powerful conduit for spiritual power, part of which causes the apparitions to drain her physically, causing her to be incredibly hungry all the time, yet she never gains an ounce when she gorges herself. Wel, her very impressive chest seems to be continuing to grow, buy she just eats and eats and eats and gains no weight. Mieruko is desperate to protect her best friend, and find a way to banish the wraith for good. The 3 shrine creatures continue to protect Mieruko and her friends, but how much longer will that continue?
A solid twist on a new character and some interesting little reveals about the plot overall were done in this one. Plus, I just love the lil friendship trio developing here.
If you ask me why you should read the manga, I'd answer it's because of the gory drawings the author put into this volume. The drawings of the specters are just so creepy! It beats the anime! The anime is okay. Don't get me wrong. But I crave more of this series because of the character and story. The art is spectacular because of the details the author painstakingly put on the linework (especially the specters). This series isn't the best in the Fall 2021 anime lineup. But if you ask me, that's okay. We have the manga at the very least. 😁
After spending the last two volumes trying to keep her head down and ignore all the spirits and demons around her, a new substitute teacher brings something evil right into Miko Yotsuya's classroom, finally forcing her to reconsider passivity and experiment with being proactive.
And before all that, there is a fun visit to a haunted house of the amusement variety that proves quite cathartic and a spirit attack that actually surprised me for the first time in this series.
It's great to see some of the potential in this premise finally coming to fruition.
Another volume with cats! I loved how the aspect of haunting is explored in this one. It could be that ghosts attached to you because you showed them sympathy or it is just plain obsessed with you. Both can cause manifestations just like what happened to Zen-sensei here. I also like that we are slowly getting more depth when it came to the reason why there are still spirits/ghosts and why they like to attach to people, instead of them just popping up randomly on the previous volumes.
Miko decides she can't continue to just ignore the spirits she sees when she realizes they're negatively affecting her friend.
This series has definitely improved! I'm glad I kept going after the ridiculous fan service that was the first volume. The creatures in this continue to be some of the most gruesome visuals in manga with the equivalent of a few 'jump scares' when you turn the page. Miko and Hana's friendship is a delight.
