H.M. Bateman

Rate this book
H.M. Bateman’s marvelously funny cartoons brought him international fame during the middle years of the 20th century, and the very best of his work still represents a timeless comic legacy. Bateman was most celebrated for his “The Man Who…” cartoons—a series featuring hilarious social gaffes in which some lonely figure commits a ghastly faux pas to the amazement or outrage of the assembled onlookers. Indeed, the English obsession with class, etiquette, and order is at the heart of much of his humor. This book now brings together the very best of Bateman’s work in a single volume.

Fantastic cartoons, some very light-hearted (i.e. mother-in-law monster type humour), others very deep (there is one series of pictures telling the story of a meek, shy banker going about his life in a meek and shy way, but when called to war, becomes a ruthless killing machine - a fascinating look at British humour 50 years ago)

"The man who…" series of cartoons are justly feted but I get more fun out of his narrative cartoons — series of small cartoons (not in a comic strip format) that tell a single observation.
