Well, it's complicated. He was my first "everything." Then he dated my best friend. Ten years later, we're all back in Hope's Hollow for our high school reunion. And $hit's about to get real awkward.
I would be lying if I said the sight of him made me sick-- Wet in all the right places is more like it. But forgiveness is off the table.
Or so I thought, until I saw the way he tends to his grandma's place. How he cares about the housekeeper, who just so happens to be my mother.
I can't let his charm throw me off. I have my own failing venture to save. Someone's trying to screw me over.
I've got seven days in Hope's Hollow. Seven days around the only man I ever truly loved. And one shot at saving it all.
This second chance romantic suspense offers one hell of a happily ever after and a surprise ending you don't want to miss.
I accidentally downloaded this by mistake when I was searching for another book with the same title. Unfortunately, I was more than 35% in when I realized my error that this was not the book I wanted to read! Since I paid for this crapfest, I finished it and this review will contain SPOILERS, so if you plan on reading it or have read it and liked it, fair warning - stop reading this review now……
Story: Hero & heroine were childhood BFFs until they turned 18 and they lose their virginity to one other. However, after the deed was done, the douchefart of a Zero, breaks things off with her because he is “scared of his feelings”. 🙄
“I thought I knew what I wanted, but I was an idiot. I was eighteen and an idiot. I didn’t want to lose you as a friend, but I thought that if we went further, it would happen anyway. That it was better to cut all ties on the spot.” “Why?” “I was afraid. I was young and a kid and afraid of you.” “You were afraid of me,” I said. “I struggle to believe that.” “You’re intimidating, whether you like to think it or not. Strong, intelligent, beautiful, and I didn’t believe that I measured up to that, or that you would be satisfied with me. In my teenagery way, whatever.”
He was “scared” of his feelings? Really? That’s a ham-handed way to set up a romance and make the character likable or the romance believable. What the hell Authors?
So if you haven’t figured it out by now, I judge books by the MC's personality, actions, thoughts, believable/entertaining plots and my enjoyment of a book - rather than how well constructed, drama-lama or sexy times a story is written as – which by the way, THIS IS NOT on any of these points! Anyway, moving on…...
So while they were in HS and BFFs, there was a girl, Julia, (the OW) that had the Hot’s for him and he ignored her because she was a rude, selfish, vile, stuck-up bitch who looked down on heroine. This OW seeing how close he was to the heroine, decides to manipulate heroine into becoming friends with her so that she can get close to the Zero. Knowing what this OW is like, Zero then falls for her in College and they begin to date, live together & get engaged – until he later finds out that she cheated on him and breaks things off with her!
I’d never liked her. She was vapid, the type of girl who walked around expecting people to fall over for her.
“Julia was a mistake,” “I wanted to try with someone. I wanted to prove that I was whole, and that I didn’t need to throw away emotion, and she was the one who was there. She’d followed me around for fucking years, and she’d stayed my friend, and I thought she’d changed. I’d believed that she wasn’t the same person she’d been back in high school. I mean, shit, who is, right?” “I don’t care about this,” she said, “You care because it should have been you, back then. It should have been you who I tried with, but I couldn’t fucking do it. I couldn’t fathom screwing it up and hurting you.” “That doesn’t make any sense,” she whispered. “It did to me. The thought of hurting you is like… the antithesis of what I’m about. I want the best for you, Maddy. I want you to be happy and healthy and—” “In love with someone else.” “What? That’s not what I was saying.” That’s what it boils down to, doesn’t it? You want me to be happy, just not with you. You don’t care who it’s with, just not you.” “No. That’s not what I want.” “Then how can you think I would ever be happy without—”
“What? What is it? What do you want me to say, Daniel? That I’m jealous you were with Julia? Fine, yeah, I’m jealous, there you have it. I’m so fucking insanely jealous that you were ever with her when you should have been with me from the start.”
I didn’t show my frustration at having to hear about my ex. She was part of the past, but it still pissed me off that I’d ever fallen for her shit, and that she was now talking in Maddy’s ear. Maddy, who had no idea what had happened between us.
So now you say, he realizes that after breaking off things with the OW, he would have a Come-to-Jesus moment and realize that heroine is the love of his life and go back to her? Yeah…no. Why would an Author write something so romantic as that? He only comes “home” because he apparently made a promise to his Grandmother (whom heroine’s mother worked for) before she dies that he would “look out” for heroine. He had been stalking her and found out that her ex-boyfriend (who cheated on her and sold out her hotel right under her) had some big money troubles with some bad guys and now heroine is in danger. So what does he do? He buys her hotel right under her! Because of course he couldn’t go to her and tell her what he found out and HELP her get her hotel back – like maybe offering her a loan or something? Nope. We can’t have that of course….
“I told you, gorgeous. I was an idiot. Scared stiff. Because I knew you were the only one who could make me care more than I wanted to. And that I wouldn’t stay friends with you after that one night.” “And that was bad.” “I wasn’t ready to deal with loving you. “I made a promise.” “After I came back to Hope’s Hollow to see my grandmother, when she was… about to pass on, she asked me to protect you. She made me promise.” “That makes this all fine then. You only cared about me because your Nana asked you to, and instead of catching up with me like a normal human being, you followed me and bought my hotel.”
So 10 years later since they “broke up”, they meet again and this shitfest of a story has Zero constantly (and I mean CONSTANTLY) pulling away to the point that I wanted to bash my head in his face if he was a real character!
Inviting her here had gone against everything I’d planned. I had sworn to myself that I would allow no woman near me again. (POV about heroine whom he had invited to dinner…). The doorbell rang, and my muscles grew taut. She was here. Fuck, she’d come. Any hope that I’d back out of this was gone now.
I couldn’t allow her to be hurt. It’s the promise. That’s all, the promise. But no amount of convincing would support that thought. I’d had her again, and I wanted more of that. Not only physically, either. Pull back before it’s too late. But it already was.
I drowned in her. In her flavor, her scent, her presence.
I love you. But that couldn’t be true. I wouldn’t let it be true, and if it was, I’d never let it come to light. It would have to be a secret that went to my grave with me. Nothing could hurt her or me. Definitely not because you’re in love with her.
“We’re not in a relationship,” I said. “Oh, I know. Trust me, I know. There is no need for clarification on that point.” “Jesus, Madeline, you’re not making this easy.” “I’m not making this easy?
Time to leave her behind again, even though I didn’t want to. Hated the thought of it. And that’s exactly why you have to leave.
I love you. I want you. I want to be with you. But I can’t. I cannot.
What would I risk if I let it happen? Not money, but myself, and that went against my gut feeling. Wanting her would be my downfall, and no one brought me down.
“If that’s what you want.” Because I’d give it to her. Whatever she wanted. Just not me. Not us. Not the ruination of the wall I’d built around myself. Not again.
And of course we have to have a heroine with the traitorous body syndrome and the OW who comes into the picture to cause trouble & manipulate yet again the stupid heroine.
“Daniel, I don’t think that’s a good idea, I mean tonight was… great, but it only led one way, and it isn’t right. You’re my friend’s ex-fiancé. It’s… it wouldn’t be right.”
“Daniel, I don’t know, maybe this is dumb, but I always got the feeling that Daniel had a crush on you. When nothing came of it and you two stopped being friends, I kind of forgot about it, but now… I don’t know, just promise me that you won’t do anything with him.” “What?” “You know what I mean,” Julia said. “That you won’t hook up with him or marry him or something. I want to try to get Daniel back. I want to show him that we’re meant for each other, and I can’t do that if you’re in the picture.” “Julia, that’s ridiculous,” I said, flatly. “It’s important to me,” my old friend whined. “We were so perfect together. I mean, we had our problems, but I loved him and he loved me, and now everything is ruined. Come on, please. Promise me?” “I’m not going to make any promises because, frankly, it’s ridiculous. You can’t be this insecure. If you guys are meant to be together, you’ll be together. If not, you won’t.” “Now, can we please put this matter to rest and talk about something else?” The fact that she’d mentioned Daniel having had a crush on me made it worse. She’d had an idea back then that he’d liked me, and she’d made her move on him. Not that I could blame her for that. Can I?
“There shouldn’t be anything for you to handle.” Julia was sloppy now, her makeup smudged, her dress riding up where the other dude had been fondling her. It reminded me of the nights I’d come home to this after a day at work. Found her passed out or drunk and been unable to get an answer out of her. A straight reply to where she’d been and who with. “Leave Madeline alone,” I said.
I felt nothing but pity for her. She’d torn her own life apart, exposed herself to me a long time ago, and now, it was over, and she had trouble letting go. It was ironic.
“But, Daniel, how can—wait, just wait a minute.” She pulled her arm out of my grasp. “Why are you doing this? I thought you loved me.” “That’s gone now,” I said and hardened the words. I had to drive them home. “Long gone, Julia. You know what happened and why. It’s over. Find someone else.” “I know it’s her fault,” Julia said and yawned, tilting her head to one side, away from me. “I always knew that you were in love with her. I could feel it from the beginning, even though I didn’t want it to be true.” What the fuck could I say to that? I had been faithful to Julia during our relationship. I had done all I could to be a committed partner.
“I never liked her, you know,” Julia said, quietly. “I had to force myself to be her friend, and it sucked, but I did.” Tears welled in her eyes, and her mascara was smudged. “I always wanted to be with you, and I used her to get to you, but so what. It all worked out. Or so I thought. I don’t know.”
Heroine’s shift from oh-my-God-I-need-to-stay-away-from-zero to hey-let’s-bang-‘cause-he-is-still-hot-and-I’ll-forgive-everything, and befriend-my-ex-bff-again-who-stole-my-guy was NOT normal. Not. At. All.
Long-story-short, the foundation for a good love story and Romances in general is good chemistry, likable characters and believable plots. If none of those things exist, how can readers (outside of fangirls that is…) give a fuck about them or root for their happy ending? I mean, really. This book is practically a middle finger to the word "love", and I'm sure romance books aren't supposed to be that way.
And by the way Author, if you are going to print something for the world to see and for people to pay their hard earned money for, TAKE THE TIME TO FUCKING PROOF READ IT FIRST!!! We are in 2019 where PCs have SPELL CHECK. FUCKING USE IT!
Spoilers if anyone wants them . . . . Hero fell in love and got engaged to the heroines friend in a ten year seperation because he was too ~scared~ to be with heroine 🙄
Where were the editor and proof reader for this book. I am talking about professional ones and not the fangirl ones. I don’t believe this hero’s thoughts made sense to anyone at all. This is so stupid I feel second handed embarrassed for the author. And useless to mention heroine because you know how her hormones react to zero’s hotness in these stories. 🐄 🐮🤣🤣🤣 Read the quotes in this review... https://www.goodreads.com/review/show... I had a crease between my eyebrows and I think that wrinkle will be there permanently. 🤦🏻♀️🤦🏻♀️🤦🏻♀️🤦🏻♀️
What a waste of a good storyline and plot. I think it was mostly the robotic, unnatural dialogue and the tame, also robotic descriptions of their sexual encounters that made the reading experience less than exciting. I fell asleep twice before chapter five.
There were.glimmers of promise, like when Maddy finally lost her temper with Daniel and Julia, albeit separately. That in and of itself was unusual and unrealistic, because any other intelligent woman who had been through as much as Maddy had would have questioned Julia's tactics and realized how fake Julia was. They had nothing in common aside from Daniel, and a true friend would have.backed.off due to the friend code. Julia always knew Maddy had feelings for Daniel, and just wanted to have what Maddy couldn't have. Daniel's reasoning for resisting Maddy was also lame, especially for such a powerful, confident CEO who was a billionaire. Hard to believe an intelligent, successful, and attractive man who had given Julia a run as his fiancee would doubt the success of a relationship with Maddy.
So there you have it. This book was filled with improbabilities, ridiculous theories about love and relationships, robotic and mundane dialogue, and a promising plotline that, to me, was unfulfilled. One star.
From the description on the ad and the blurb, it says she is pregnant. So this whole time I kept waiting for their 10yr old love child to pop up yelling “Daddy”. That never happened. The only mention of being pregnant came and the very end.
My other hang up was there was lots of grammar errors. A good once over could have found them all.
Other than that, it was a pretty good story. 3.5 Stars. ( I raise to the next highest star when leaving reviews on goodreads and Amazon.)
After losing her hotel business Madeline comes home just in time for her high school ten year reunion. Daniel is back in town too but not for the reunion. He is back to try and keep Maddy safe and possibly get their relationship back on track. Years ago he made a mistake that not only cost him his best friend but the only woman he has ever loved Maddy. Maddy doesn't want to have anything to do with Daniel but her mom is determined for her to mend fences with him and put the past behind them. Once they start talking again strange things occur around her mom's place causing them to have to move into the mansion with Daniel. Then she runs into Julia Daniel's ex and her former friend and things get more awkward. Was she really Julia's friend or just a stepping stone to get to Daniel? Does Daniel want something more with her or is he playing with her again?
This is a great story that will have you on the edge of your seat until the end. The chemistry between them is blazing hot. This is a well written and very entertaining story. I would recommend this book to any book lover.
I voluntarily read and reviewed this book for the Bad Boy Update.
This book is a train wreck. Proceed with caution. Between the juvenile writing, lack of editing/proofreading, unlikable characters, contrived drama, characters who acted more like teens than grown adults, and zero communication it was just all over bad.
The whole storyline seemed to be lacking something. The fact that Daniel just ups and ditches Maddy the second they sleep together seems a little far fetched but somewhat plausible as he is a teen guy. But the whole title of the book is Ex’s Baby and there is NO baby unless I missed something somewhere I feel like it was a crucial part missing. The Julia part of the story was frustrating like in what world would Daniel be interested in her after years of disliking her. For the most part the story and characters banter is enjoyable and keeps you reading but the ending fell flat for me.
It’s all goop! Confused? THEN READ THIS ROMANCE! In the midst of this mysterious romance novel, beats a comedic heart which surprised me at every turn and kept me reading what turned out to be an exceptional romance novel. “IT’S COMPLICATED” is NOT one of those romances that one can figure out within the first few chapters and then just read the hot or steamy parts and say, “Done.” With author Aubrey Wright, there will always be a twist or turn or two that come out of nowhere and take the story down a path totally unexpected. So reader, BEWARE of your own complacency, this is one magical ride through what is, on one hand, a sensuous romance which seems to interrupt a convoluted mystery! This author’s ability to present just enough information to keep me turning pages quickly, interspersed with some of the most sensuous dialogue ever, shows the promise of a master storyteller. I can hardly wait to see what Wright presents us with next. And that is the heart of any writing, that it so entertains, educates, elevates or entices the emotions, reactions or actions of a reader, that what the author intended does not measure up to what the readers actually receive as a result of their experiences, investments, and enjoyment of that piece. I am so very glad that I volunteered to read a copy of Aubrey Wright’s “IT’S COMPLICATED,” and this is my voluntary and honest 5-STAR review! I strongly suggest you purchase your copy of Maddy and Daniel’s complicated road to love. It is a complex and compelling tale with the perfect mixture of suspense, humor, and heat. A perfect poolside or beach day read. Happy pages! 😉
Is it me or is Ms. Wright surpassing her own work? Have you ever had the pleasure to read her books? Let me assure you that I have and while I am always impressed, this release is on another level. Her creativity to create a rollercoaster of a romance with It's Complicated has pushed the bar up for Authors everywhere.
I read daily. Constantly sitting with a book in my hand and I am beyond impressed (I am no expert but I know what I like & this book is it). Trying not to give away pertinent information so I don't ruin it for reader's but here it goes...
Ms. Wright has gifted us with a superior storyline between two fated characters, Madeline and Daniel. They've been friends since childhood and stayed that way until he took what she freely offered and walked away; in the most spectacular fashion. After a decade apart, they reunite unexpectedly (or is it)? Now that Madeline is in danger, will she allow Daniel to protect her? Or will she turn him away? There are secrets, danger & intrigue as well as a love so strong inside these awe inspiring pages. So much love for Ms. Wright right now. I can not wait to see what she thinks of next. HEA Guaranteed.
I voluntarily requested an advanced reader's copy of It's Complicated in exchange for my honest & voluntarily given opinion. Wow, romance junkies, like myself, I implore you to follow along.
The story is of Daniel and Madeline (Maddy) coming back to their tiny town of Hope's Hollow for their 10 year high school reunion. Daniel and Maddy were childhood best friends, until Daniel broke her heart. Daniel is recently out of an engagement to Maddy's old high school BF, Julia, and Maddy is recently back without her job of running a hotel in New York, and out of a terrible relationship. This book has a lot banter back and forth between Maddy & Daniel, and it makes you feel like you are friends with both of them. You're rooting for them the entire time in this book. The mystery and suspense of the danger that has followed Maddy unknowingly, and entangled Danny keeps you on your toes. There were a few twists and turns that were unexpected for me. Maddy is trying to protect her heart from being broken again, and Daniel is scared to follow his feelings for Maddy. It keeps you intrigued and turning pages (or scrolling thru pages) I couldn't put it down. I found myself reading every opportunity I could. I finished this book in 2 days! Definitely recommend this book, it's another brilliant story from Aubrey! I received this book as part of an ARC, and this review is completely my own thoughts and feelings.
i read this book as part of an arc program. This is the second chance romance between Madeline and Daniel. They grew up together and when Madeline turned 18, they lost their virginities to each other, but then Danile left and told Madeline he couldn't be friends anymore. Daniel was then engaged to Madeline's friend Julia, but they broke up. Now ten years later, Madeline has lost her job as a hotel manager and returns home for her high school reunion. Daniel is now a billionaire and returns as well. Daniel tries to talk to Madeline, but she is still angry at him, but he is determined to talk to her. Daniel still wants Madeline, but he wants to keep her safe, so he tries to keep his distance from her. Madeline hates that she is still attracted to Daniel. When Madeline's ex shows up in town, She tells him to leave her alone. Daniel and Madeline grow closer, but the danger is still there and Daniel has secrets that Madeline may never forgive him for. I really liked this book. I was hooked from the start. I loved Daniel and think he really loved Madeline, but he thought she was better off away from him. Madeline was in love with Daniel but she didn't want to be. Good one.
A Good Complication that Enticed Me to Read. Aubrey Wright gave this book the perfect title. But she was attune to clearing everything up before Snoopy appeared in the Epilogue. I thought all her characters were well developed. Maddy, Daniel, and Julia were high school friends but, Maddy and Daniel were closer due to Maddy’s mom was a pvt nurse to Daniel’s grandmother and they all lived on the estate until college and after Maddy had sex for the first time with Daniel, he turned to Julia and Maddy left. Ten years later people are home for a reunion and closely guarded secrets. Some are life threatening and complicated. All must be unwound before the HEA. The story, for the most part, flowed nicely. Just in a few spots it dragged. Honestly, and this is just my opinion, Julia’s character and drama really wouldn’t have been missed. However I’m definitely recommending this book for your reading enjoyment and pleasure. I received this ARC from “Bad Boy Update” for my honest review so I’m leaving this for your consideration. Peace.
Fine story but another cocky, selfish, cowardly leading man ruins it.
I think I need to give up on this genre. Book after book is nothing but loving women who are helplessly in love with absolute trash men. Daniel is no exception. We are supposed to want him and Maddy to get together, but why? They grew up together and were the best of friends. Then on her 18th birthday he takes her virginity and moments later tells her he's leaving town and never wants to speak to her again. What?!?!?! Of course he tells himself it's for the best because he doesn't want to hurt her. Yeah, because taking her virginity and walking out of her life didn't hurt. I could go on about all the other trash things this guy does from stalking her for years, to keeping secrets from her that put her life in danger, but what's the point. Of course there's a HEA because no matter how badly the guys in these books treat the ladies, all it takes is an "I'm sorry" and an "I love you" to make things right. It's ridiculous.
Madeline and Daniel have been friends since they were kids until he took her virginity and then didn't want to be friends with her anymore. Started dating her best friend Julia (who isn't much a friend to begin with). Talk about confusing, right?? 10 years later, they are both home for a high school reunion but there is so much more going on. Madeline has lost her hotel thanks to her ex Richard but what she doesn't know yet is that Daniel bought it. His reasons, to help her. She is in danger and Daniel is determined to help her even though she will end up not wanting his help. Will they be able to move on when all of the secrets come out?? Will he be able to save her from her ex before it's too late? You'll have to see by reading the book. It's well written and the characters are enjoyable.
Madeline has lost everything and has come home to stay with her Mom while she pulls her life back together. Then it gets complicated, she runs into Daniel, he best friend growing up who left her after on her 18th Birthday. But like the title says... It's complicated and Madeline keeps getting hurt, because she can't seem to get away from Daniel. He realizes that she's mad at him and as much as he tries to do the right thing, he just keeps messing everything up. It doesn't help that he has some information about her ex and his shady business deals, but in trying to protect her, he thinks the best plan of attack is to leave her in the dark. It was a fun read, and the chemistry between Madeline and Daniel is fitting for two people who have loved each other forever, but are afraid of losing each other.
This story gripped me right from the start. This is not just a second chance love story, it has depth. There’s danger but it’s secret danger and it takes the reader awhile to find out what exactly it is since Daniel takes his time in telling us. That’s also not the only secret he’s got. Maddy is pretty much an open book about everything but her feelings.
Aubrey Wright does a great job of pacing the information she gives us so the reader doesn’t get frustrated not knowing.
At one point I thought I knew what the twist was and for a minute it seemed I was right, then it flipped a different way! Totally blindsided me! Well done.
I received an advanced copy of this book through bookfunnel in exchange for my honest review.
This book was a great read. I devoured it in less than a day. Madeleine comes back to her hometown with a wounded heart and broken dreams. She becomes reacquainted with her best friend slash crush. The comical interaction between these two is electric and adorable. I enjoyed watching Maddy, not only stay strong, but grow throughout this book. She stays true to herself no matter what. She is optimistic no matter what comes her way and takes an “it is what it is” attitude to everything. This can become very frustrating to Daniel who is trying to love her from afar and protect her. The suspense and drama in this story make it the perfect book to cuddle up with on a rainy day! I was given an ARC in exchange for my honest review.
ONE INCREDIBLE JOURNEY!!! Off the chain! Struggling with a multitude of trials, plot twists and explosive emotions while balancing on a razors edge. One amazing spin for this second chance romance. A churning eddy of surprising circumstances and troubling events leads to jeopardy, danger and suspense that blows this baby wide open. This page flipping wonder with a raging storyline and gripping plot blasts this bad boy to life spectacularly. The chemistry between the two main characters is white hot and off the charts. The characters are authentic and realistic with depth and traits that blend and flow. The scenes are so vividly detailed it gives the illusion you were right there with them instead of on the sidelines. Remarkable job Aubrey, thanks for sharing.
A well told, both funny and tragic, story of the love between Daniel and Madeline. Danny was abandoned by both his parents and was reared by his grandparents, especially his Nana, in a mansion with plenty of money. But Nana hired Maddy's single mother to live in the servants' small home next to the mansion to be her nurse. So the two grew up together, the same age and grade in the small town until Maddie's 18th birthday. On that day, they gave their virginity to each other, but immediately afterward, Daniel said it was a mistake and he was leaving town. This story takes place 10 years later when they both return, supposedly for their 10th year since graduating high school. However, the truth makes for scary and sad events that eventually lead to a HEA ending. Recommended reading!
We start with a fairly simple story – but then it gets complicated! Daniel and Maddy were best friends at one time. Then he started dating her best friend, Julia! And as if that were not bad enough, out of the blue he shoves her away with no explanation, breaks her heart, and leaves town! It takes ten years before he comes back, allegedly to attend their high school reunion. Will Maddy give him another chance? Will Julia come back and try to ruin things between them… again?
This was a good read. There are, of course, many other things going on in this story to keep the reader eager to read on. The characters are well-portrayed, and the story line keeps things jumping! Grab your copy and enjoy!

This was a very interesting book from beginning to end. It was gripping and enjoyable. I absolutely loved Madeline. She was such an amazing character. So head strong and determined. Her mom was a hoot. Madeline and Daniel knew each other when they were kids. Daniel got engaged to her friend and basically stopped talking to Madeline. Little did she know that Daniel was keeping an eye on her. They both come back to town for their high school reunion. But Madeline is determined to stay away from Daniel. But fate has something else in store for these two. I loved reading about these two. It was an enjoyable book that you could really get into. If I wasn't already a fan of Aubrey I would be after reading this one.
Well... this was a surprise read. I expected a romantic tale, and yes, I received this, however, I also received so much more. There was also mystery, suspense, drama, betrayal, action and adventure. A lot of activity in such a short span of time for the length of this novel but very well assembled and flowed seamlessly. The characters were interesting and varied. An original and believable story line that held this reader's attention. An author to check out again in the future. Great entertainment.
Recommended read across genres.
I voluntarily received an advance review copy and I am leaving an honest and unbiased review. I have no affiliation to this author.
