They said AIDS had gone airborne. They said we needed a vaccine. They said there were no side effects. They were wrong. Now 9 of every 10 humans have changed, and they need the blood of the unchanged to live. Their thirst is unquenchable, and they can’t be stopped from destroying our world. And I’m one of them.
Disclaimer: This series contains horrific apocalyptic scenes as well as detailed sex scenes between the male protagonist and multiple women.
Let's get my two caveats to my enjoyment of this book out of the way first:
1 - Click bait title There are no vampire lords and there is no conquering going on anywhere. This is actually a good thing because I kind of prefer the story we got to the one promised in the title, but it's frustrating regardless.
2 - Hair colour & girlfriend I know, this is a bit of a weird one but bear with me. When reading this book I got so frustrated with the number of times the author referenced the hair colour of the 3 main women in the book and the fact that one of them was his girlfriend that I did a really quick search and came up with the following results: Girlfriend - mentioned 162 times Auburn hair - 39 times Brunette - 36 times (17 of which were all in one chapter... chapter 17 actually... Strange) Brown hair - 12 times
I stopped looking at this point as I feel I have enough stats here to say the author severely overused those descriptions and should dial back a bit.
Those things out of the way, and I really enjoyed this book.
On the surface it's a familiar SHTF/Survival story, but it hits all the right notes to make it something more. The same is true for the vampire element. Essentially the author has taken familiar things, mixed them together and put his own twist on them to make something new and enjoyable.
Most of all though, he focused on writing characters that are easy to grow attached to which instantly makes everything that follows richer. I'm scared for them when that's needed, happy when things go well for then, and routing for them to come out on top through it all.
Basically what I am saying is that if you can overlook some over used words, a click bait title and some more adult material (sex and violence), then this is a damn good read. It's also highly fitting for the world we live in right now.
5 Stars! ★★★★★ Non-stop Heart-Pounding Action! This was great! I really enjoyed being thrown into this alternate universe where a virus spreads infecting people slowly, till they become ‘Zombie-Vampires’ in a sense, killing and eating people. The urge to drink blood becomes so strong, they can’t resist. They develop super hero strength as well. I liked how it was written. It’s written from Sam’s point of view and I liked his struggle to save his girlfriend and ultimately stay alive.
“The instant the blood touched my tongue, I knew it was exactly what I’d been craving. I’d never tasted anything better, and the flavor was indescribable. It wasn’t the coppery, metallic taste I remembered from childhood bloody noses or a cut that I’d licked on my hand. Instead, it was more of a sweet flavor that flooded through my entire body like a shot of sugary coffee.”
I can’t get enough of this story. I am absolutely inhaling everything written. I loved everything about this book. The characters were funny and relatable. The chaos was scary as hell. I loved being put in the front seat with all this action unfolding as if I was really there in the middle of an apocalypse.
This was a mix of worlds I didn’t know could mix. Horror, comedy, romance, drama, all in one! I thoroughly enjoyed this! Great story and great writing.
What if vampires fed off of everyone off the street. Trying to lure people out of hiding pretending to be politicians or cops or little children crying for their mothers. How would you tell the difference between who is human and who is vampire? How would you survive? I have no clue how I would, but reading about Sam’s experiences is breathtakingly awesome!
PS: Hella Sexy Sex Scenes towards the end!!! I loved it!!!!
This was pretty good. I was a little uncertain about this one because of the author. I tried to read two other of his books and only made it 15% through before I put it down. Something triggered my pet-peeves and I gave up. I decided to give this one a chance and I have to admit I might have judged this author a little too harshly. The premise and setup were pretty good. The world is ending and people are eating each other. The MC has been sick in bed for a week when he gets a call from his girlfriend telling him just that. She is stuck at work and needs help. Even though he is sick, he goes to try and help her. Turns out he isn't just sick he is one of them. He is a little bit different though because he has some control. He is able to get to his girlfriend and after she gives him some of her blood he gets stronger is able to get her back to her apartment with her 2 roomates. There is a lot of the what is going on moments and people freaking out. Then the rest of the book is the MC going out into the city to try and secure food, weapons and equipment for the 3 girls. He has to fight a bunch of other vampires and he has to listen to a lot of humans die. There were a few things that didn't make much sense Overall not bad.
This review is for the first two parts of the Vampire Lord series, which I listened to one after the other. The premise of this series is ok, in particular if you like survival stories (which I don't, but listened anyway because I like many of Jacobs' books). Suddenly half the people turn into vampires, and the other half are, well, fucked. What happens next is described in much detail. The good parts: Jacobs has an opinion about vaccines and gun magazine size limits (!) and shares it with us in repeated rants, thinly veiled as parts of the story. Also, I was kinda interested to see where the story would go. The bad parts: this is some slow slice of life survival shit. I mean Misty Vixen's Haven series was slow, but this is way worse. There's sneaking around to avoid vamps, fighting with vamps, and creepy vampire feeding meets sex. That's it. The first book isn't so bad but by the end of the second book the story slows down to a snail's pace with way too much detail and repetition. Then there's a lot of the stuff that Eric Vall also fills his 20-part series with: between each bit of action there are long reminiscences about how nice the MC's girlfriends are, how much he wants to protect them, etc. Repetitive wool gathering that takes up a surprising amount of the writing. Which is a pity, because despite th elimited scope inherent in survival stories there is plenty of interesting material here that just isn't addressed, mysteries that warrant investigation (why is the MC so much stronger than the vamps around him even though drinking way less blood, how are his harem girls recovering so quickly from his feeding, why has he kept his sanity, who caused the vampire 'plague' and why? why does the author think you can get mobile internet access by cobbling together a satellite dish and some random junk with duct tape?). Which brings us to a downside of audio books: when a story is exciting (but not too complicated) an audio book drags you along at a nice clip, which is great. But when a story is boring and has too much detail there's no practical way to fast-forward (unlike in a book or ebook where you can just flip forward a few pages). So why did I keep listening? Well, sunk-cost fallacy. Once I've read (or listened to) the first book of a series I want to see where it goes from there, and stopping would waste the time already invested. Also the premise is interesting so I keep hoping against hope that the story quality will improve (many of the author's other series are much better), even in the face of obvious efforts to spin out this story into as many parts as possible. Let's see if part 3 is any better.
About the Book: Sam wakes up in a new world, and not in the dreamy kind of way. After getting vaccinated from airborne AIDS, majority of the folks went berserk soon after. Riots on the streets as rabid humans tear each other apart to drink blood and eat flesh. And somewhere in this awful hell there’s his girlfriend whom he must reach no matter what. But the problem is… Sam got vaccinated too.
My Opinion: It feels in poor taste to read a book about vaccines from pandemic that cause people to turn berserk. One must just hope that all the conspiracy theorists will not find it. There’s also a nasty whiff of sexism or outright stupidity as the hero keeps calling his girlfriend and her friends “brunette” and “long-legged girl“. Do you actually call your partners by their hair color, even in thought? Then he jumps to google if women can use some weapons, all while unable to use any himself. Dude, really? Found answer was “yes, with training” as opposed to guys not needing any training, I guess. Anyway, the one plus would be the fight scenes, and surprising vampire characters.
I didn’t really know what I was going to be reading when I picked this up...
The title is misleading in my opinion. There are vampires but no lords....at least not yet? Perhaps he’s leading up to something.
The negatives for me are some of his word choices. His descriptions of the girls became repetitive and strange. “Auburn”, “brunette”, “beauty”, “dark haired” and my personal bug bear...”my girlfriend” - these words are used an ABSURD amount of times throughout the book. To the point that it’s very noticeable and it irritated me and pulled my focus from the story when I read them (which was OFTEN). I felt like either the author was a bit lazy in his descriptions or a guy who hasn’t been around girls a lot to come up with better adjectives?? I’m not sure. But it was weird.
That being said... The story is very original and unique. Vampires have been really overdone in the past few years, and this is a fresh and unusual take on the subject.
I was uncertain about the MC but I’ve grown to like him and the other characters quite a bit. The author captured the feelings of what I’d imagine it would feel like to wake up to that sort of shit storm pretty well. It was well paced and overall I enjoyed the book and will definitely pick up the second one to see where the story goes.
(Book 1-3) What I liked- Been on a survival/harem/erotica marathon recently, having gone through dozens including some great finds in series like Tamer, Post Apocalyptic Haven, Wild Wastes, Without Law etc, and this series is easily the most gritty and intense one I’ve read so far. While the plot is straightforward, the suspense and constantly lingering tension was enough to keep me on the edge of my seat throughout. Action scenes are unapologetically brutal (like crushing infant skulls level of gore) and the overall tone is dark and serious. The MC is cautious and levelheaded, strong but not overpowering. Just enough to have some badass moments while still having to plan well in advance to keep surviving. The harem is executed well without rushing. All the women are distinct and nicely fleshed out with great sex scenes.
What I didn’t- Honestly nothing yet. My slight issue would be the title “Vampire Lord”. I expected some army building but so far they are barely surviving. Hopefully this will be a long series and they’ll eventually start building their own base, expanding their influence and stuff.
Overall- 8.8/10 Among the best in its genre. A gripping and thrilling ride with all the guilty pleasure elements of harem/erotica.
A decent start but a there are a few kinks along the way
What I like: The protagonist seems pretty confident, does what he says he'll do and doesn't stay inside just because the others want him to be safe. The changed people were depicted as being very brutal in the beginning and I'm happy that it's seen throughout the book with how many people die, places are abandoned and they are limited in what they can do to avoid being found.
What I don't like: This whole book has been about reacting to what's happening, trying to stay safe and without much of a plan or goal other than "survive". There is also an extreme overuse of fuck/fucking to describe everything which is a bit annoying (not that I normally have a problem with it, but it's extreme in this case).
What I hope/expecting to see in the next book: I'm hoping for the protagonist and the girls to come up with a proper plan of action with clear goals so they can be more aggressive and take action instead of being defensive and only react to changes. I'd like for the group to find more people (both human and vampire) that feel the same way they do.
I am pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed this book. I will be honest with you I hold off on reading it originally for the cover – I know I know, that good old don’t judge a book by its cover cliché – but for some reason I had the sense looking at the cover that it was going to be one of those reads where the author is bike pumping sex sense into an already inflated book with very little room for plot or development. I am pleased to say that my original inclination has been proven wrong. Off the starting line this book has so much plot, action, and tension. The scenes are graphic and written so well that I’m sure the lad next to me on the train with how many times I whispered “holy sh**”. This an Apocalypse Survival Thriller first, with Male Sci-fi Fantasy coming in somewhere around forth or fifth to the race. The world building is well done and the plot was great. I feel like the characters need a little bit more development but they didn’t deter from the overall feel. I am eagerly anticipating a reading of book 2.
Audible. Logan Jacobs has created a terrifying vampire apocalypse with Lord of the Vampires. This book is extremely violent and high tempo once the plot opens up in chapter 3 or 4ish. Before that the foundation story and elemental storyline are developing, introducing events, conditions, atmosphere and mortal threats. The world has turned up side down after AIDS has become "airborne" and the vaccine provided is causing varied horrible reactions to those who have taken it. Everything is written first person from Sam's perspective as he and his girlfriend Natalie join her roommates in New York City attempting to navigate the crazy new normal. Much of the book is extremely violence graphic. It is not a Candy Land kind of book. It's raw and darkly realistic as to those affected post vaccine including children. I found some of the early choices to obtain supplies and food down several blocks of man-eating monsters a little premature and reckless. However it kept the tempo high. If you enjoy horror movies this is a good pick.
So a book about a viral pandemic that causes the apocalypse right at the time of the covid-19 pandemic? In bad taste, I hear you say? Well let me rebuke you and say this is awesome. I have been a fan of a lot of Logan Jacobs worlds and works so far and I have to say this one just works. As far as I am concerned, this is his best book and start to a series yet. It keeps you giesding throughout and Sam the mc is just your average guy. Unlike other survival/end of days series Sam does not know everything and is a bit clueless. This is balanced by the women he has seen to protect. The sum is greater than the parts is probably the best way to describe their interactions.i cannot wait for the next in series.
The book was not what I was expecting. I picked this one up as it was a suggestion at the end of the book from Amazon. I really was expecting that I would read a few chapters and that the book would turn to trash (just was what I thought it would end up doing, you know a B rated film from the 90s) but I decided to try anyway. I needed a new book to read and figured I could deal with it for a day or so until I found a new book.
This book not only messed up that expectation, but I was unable to put the book down. I read it in one sitting and stayed up extremely late into the night. It was well written, and I was interested in how the world around the MC would turn out. I look forward to the next book!
The book should've been called "boring conversations between a nerd without character, his girlfriend, a girl who is there to google things and an idiot". I've read half of it and I can summarize it all with one sentence - guy catches vampirism and tries to keep his girlfriend and her friends safe from other vampires. That's all. There is literally nothing interesting or engaging in this story. All I see is the characters constantly talking about... everything. Dialogues in the middle of fighting, dialogues in the middle of dialogues, dialogues, dialogues and more dialogues. If the main character is fighting someone, he'll somehow manage to have a 5-minute conversation with another character. And it'll be a boring one going over established things a hundredth time.
Sam has been sick in bed for a week, but when his girlfriend Natalie calls and needs to be rescued he rises and finds a whole new crazy world. A vaccine has caused people to crave blood and Sam is one of them. He is able to control his blood list to protect the one he loves and her friends. The book details the crazy first few days of an apocalypse where vampires hunt humans and use any method they can to get blood. I enjoyed this book and look forward to the next Sam is learning his abilities and how to best keep his human friends alive in this new world. This is an excellent read if you enjoy apocalyptic fiction!
The flow of the book was really good it was shorter than I would have liked but for me that most always signs of a good book I felt like there could have been more sex and harem but there is people on both sides and you can't please everyone. It is a really interesting concept and idea and I like how the author executed it. Lots of questions remain. So far it's a read recommend from me. If my review was helpful let me know as I'm constantly trying to improve them.
Not perfect, but really good. I was surprised. I enjoyed it. Ok fights, considering this was a apocalypse setting I found it believable any mistakes made by the MC had more to do with a city kid being placed in a bad situation and seemed to be a matter of figuring things out and not because he was a dumb ass. When he reflected on choices he mad it was not a sob fest. I can't wait for book 2
Definitely going to read the next book in the series
This book really caught my interest from the amount of detail in just the first few chapters. The main character is funny and handles most situations pretty well. There were a few kinda important things I noticed at the end that didn't get addressed but im hoping they do in the second book Altogether a really good book and I would recommend it to many.
Logan's "Evil Genius" is a pretty good series, and I followed him because of that one... But the rest is all cheap smut that makes little sense. Take this for example, in this book, there is no vampire "lord" and he doesnt conquer the world. By the end of the third book he has a truck full of food and women, with a whole country of monsters to slog through.
There are just so many reasons I can't stand his books... Just dont bother.
I was not expecting it to be as good as it was because I'm not a huge fan of vampires and this is pretty obviously a vampire centered story, however it's written with less interview with a vampire and more post apocalyptic survival with vampires being a science fiction take that I think gives it a fresh perspective, it let's you enjoy all the great vampire pop culture references without being locked into the lore and it made it a fun read.
This had a slight twist on the typical "zombie apocalypse" theme. The characters are interesting. I have to admit that as others have mentioned in their reviews the author uses the term "my girlfriend" about a million times followed closely by describing his girlfriend's roommates by their hair color about a half million times. If you can overlook that then it's not a bad book. I'm going to read the next one in the series.
I really don't like quitting on a book, you know, not reading it all. But sometimes I wonder if that's a silly rule of mine. I do want to pay the author my respect not only by buying the fucking expensive book, but also finish it, reading the whole thing, no matter how much of a page turner it is not. Or how tedious, awful or down right fucking insulting it might be.
So I didn't quit it. Should have though. Should have.
Perfect timing with the Corona virus kicking it full gear. This is quite the new direction for Logan Jacobs. Not my usual cup of tea, but I will read anything of his. Not recommended if you are squeamish, but if you like apocalypse pseudo-reality with vampire zombies, this is a good read from a great author.
What do you do when you're stuck at home because of a quarantine? Read a story about a disease that turns people into vampires, of course! Add a regular Joe MC, add a few hot girls, a bunch of guns and a ton of action, and you get a good way to while away the time. Excellent start, and I look forward to your further efforts.
This would be the book it almost wrote. Take all of the good things about vampire (minus the extremely supernatural stuff) stories and mash it together, and you might have a close story to this one. Jacobs knocks it out of the park with a believable story, and sets it up for a good start for a series. Keep your eyes here!
This Book was interesting to the end. I love the main characters. I won't say the book was scary but it was really interesting and the way it worked out how they became what they became, and I love the one really heavy heavy sex scene. Hot. Im definitely reading the 2nd book .
Great pacing and action. I loved the way they have to experiment to figure out how all this works. Nothing groundbreakingly new here but if you like vampires and/or end of days type stuff this is well done.
This was a damn good read, fast paced, great character development, a really unique story. I can't wait for the next one, this could easily become one of my favorite post apocalyptic with a sci/fi fantasy twist stories ever!
Heck of an apocalyptic ride. Lots of brutal death, as you might expect, but the story gripped me enough to move past most of it-- while reminding me at the same time that I had sort of whitewashed most of this genre in my mind. Looking forward to the next book.
