You thought you’d escaped your past It’s been twenty years since Neve’s best friend Chloe went missing. Neve has never recovered and promised herself she’d never go back to that place.
But secrets can come back to haunt you When Neve receives news that her first boyfriend Jamie has gone missing, she’s forced to return. Jamie has vanished without a trace in a disappearance that echoes the events of all those years ago. Somebody is watching and will stop at nothing until the truth about what took place that night is revealed …
Neve had left her hometown twenty years ago after one of her friends, Chloe had disappeared. When another friend goes missing, Neve returns to help in the search for him. But memories of that fateful night come flooding back. Jamie had been Neve's first love and it's looking like his disappearance is connected to Chloe's.
The chapters alternate between the past, twentyone years ago and the present day. The plotline is complex. The writing is descriptive and the characters are true to life. There's several twist and turns. I could picture the mining village and the London cafe as if I'd been to them. This is a gripping page turner. Theres lots of characters to keep track of. The story did dip a bit in the middle. A story of friendship, love, revenge, secrets and lies.
I would like to thank NetGalley, HQ and the author Darren O'Sullivan for my ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Dark Corners is the latest standalone psychological thriller from Mr O’Sullivan and is compelling from its opening pages. It revolves around thirty-something Neve Chambers who is a resident of Brent Lodge Park in Hanwell, London, having escaped the small ex-mining village in which she spent her formative years due to her childhood friend Chloe Lambert's baffling disappearance over two decades ago. It was then that Neve decided she would not be going back there if she could help it as it holds far too many bad memories for her. However, she recently received a message from old school friend Holly who informed her that her first love, Jamie Hardman, had gone missing in much the same way Chloe did. Neve now feels she has to face her demons head-on and head home but once there she quickly realises someone is keeping tabs on her and watching her every move. Out of a gang of seven friends, two have now gone missing under suspicious circumstances. But who is involved and what exactly is their endgame?
This is a thriller full of dark, disturbing secrets and is based upon the dredging up of those sins committed in the village years ago as well as the new case of missing Jamie. It's a story that grabs and grips you from the initial chapter and I was eager to find out who the culprit was and their motives. Moving at a swift pace I read well into the night as the lives of the characters unravelled and their secrets were revealed. I had guessed the conclusion in advance but strangely this didn't detract from the overall story as I was enjoying it that much. This is a creepy, intense and entertaining thriller that packs a punch from the get-go and the way the narrative shifts seamlessly between past and present creates a fully rounded and clever story. The author manages to craft an intense and highly atmospheric read with all the qualms of living in a place where everybody knows you; his writing brought both the village and characters vividly to life. Many thanks to HQ for an ARC.
This was a really fast paced engaging psychological thriller.
You follow a girl called Neve who 20 years ago, her best friend Chloe went missing. When Neve finds out her first boyfriend, Jamie, has got missing she is forced to return to the village. But when she gets there she realises someone is watching her and the dark secrets the village has kept hidden for 20 years are going to slowly be revealed.
This was a really fun, fast paced thriller which kept me on the edge of my seat.
If you like the trope, of people returning to their old home towns to solve a mystery you will love this book.
I thought it was really well written. I liked the dual timelines and the fact it slowly counted down to the night when chloe went missing, it kept me hooked till the end.
I didn't see the ending coming. Although the very end could be seen as a bit cliche it was overall pretty good.
This isn't the most shocking or unbelievable thriller I've ever read. It's a pretty standard thriller plot, so if you like fast paced traditional thrillers you might really enjoy this one or if you are new to the genre as it isn't particularly gory, but it is very creepy in places
Overall, I really enjoyed this book. It's the second Darren O'Sullivan book I've read. Definitely want to check out more of this books in the future
This is a gripping thriller centring around Neve and events that happened in the small mining village she grew up in more than twenty years earlier when her best friend, Chloe, disappeared. Shortly after Neve left the village and has only visited briefly for an hour or two twice in all those years......When Neve learns that her first boyfriend, Jamie, has now disappeared she feels forced to return and reconnect with her previous friends to help find him.
The story is told on two timelines -one from the present and the other sharing what happened all those years ago. There's plenty of tension as the story unfolds, a feeling of pressure, being watched and definitely not feeling safe . . . . but you aren't sure why. It is a story to keep you figuratively on the edge of your seat, a fast paced thriller packed with mystery and intrigue along with plenty of twists and turns to keep you guessing right to the very end. It is a real page turner and one I have no hesitation in highly recommending for when you want something darker to read . . . . It is a story about discovering you can never totally escape your past, that things aren't always as you seem and you can never really tell just who you can trust . . . .
I requested and was gifted a copy of this book via NetGalley and this is my honest review after choosing to read it.
This was a dark and twisty read with an I Know What You Did Last Summer vibe. Twenty-one years ago, seven teenagers went down into the local mines. But only six of them came back out. Neve manages to get out of the small town, leaving her friends behind to deal with the aftermath of the loss of their friend. When one of the remaining friends go missing, she goes back to find him. But now the others are all disappearing one by one until its only Neve left.
I really enjoyed this one, however I did think the ending was predictable. I'd figured out what was going on fairly early, although there were still a few little surprises. This is my first book from this author but it will definitely not be my last.
Oh my goodness, this book was absolutely amazing! It’s completely taken over my life the past few days and Neve’s story hasn’t left me alone for a second - this book has everything that makes thrillers my absolute favourite genre!
In Dark Corners, we follow Neve, a woman who was involved in a tragedy as a teenager. Her best friend Chloe went missing 21 years ago in the small, mining village that she grew up in. Neve has tried to put the past behind her, but that all changes when another member of the friendship group mysteriously disappears...
Dark Corners had so many twists and turns that I never saw coming and I was on my edge of my seat for the majority of the book! The characters were so well developed and the setting was absolutely perfect. Everything about the writing was brilliant - it flowed well, was completely gripping and was so immersive!
If you enjoy thrillers and mysteries, this story is definitely for you! I can’t wait to read Darren O’Sullivan’s other books - 5 stars🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
Thank you to HQ Stories for sending me a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
I have had this in my TBR pile for a while, so decided now was the time to read it. And it was just what I needed - very fast paced, and very easy to read. I first discovered this author as he writes a lot of books that are about areas local to me and mentions places that I used to go to in my childhood - this particular story was based in London but I didn't enjoy it any less. Great read.
Compelling, dark and menacing, this exciting read was superbly plotted with an abundance of misdirections and twists. Written in the author's determinant and creepy style, I was totally absorbed and transfixed from the off and I literally couldn't put this book down. Everything about this psychological thriller was absolutely brilliant. I loved all the characters in this story, particularly Neve Chambers. The story is told in dual timelines, in flashbacks and in the present. In the flashbacks, the reader returns to the summer of 1998, when Neve and her six pals are chilling out and honouring the end of their exams, unaware that before the summer is over, one of them will disappear and the others will see their lives changed forever. These flashback sections gave Dark Corners a pleasing coming-of-age touch, as well as providing some insight as to why Neve was so anxious about returning to her hometown - a small ex-mining village.
The unraveling of this brooding story was a really gripping and addictive read and I highly recommend this book if you're looking for an atmospheric and bone-chilling experience. I am eagerly looking forward to reading more by Darren O'Sullivan.
I received a complimentary digital copy of this novel at my request from HQ via NetGalley and this review is my unbiased opinion.
"One way or another, secrets were debts that had to be paid."
Dark Corners is an eerie, mysterious and gripping thriller that had me hooked from the first page. It is a story about friendships, secrets, lies and revenge. How we can run from the past but it will always catch up with you.
Neve Chambers left the small mining village where she was born and raised after the disappearance of her best friend, Chloe, and has tried not to look back. But when an old friend gets in touch to tell her that Jamie, her first love, is now missing, she feels she has no choice but to go back. Returning to the claustrophobic village, she immediately feels everyone’s eyes on her and the whispered rumours resume. As she reconnects with the friends she left behind and searches for Jamie the evidence seems to suggest that his disappearance is connected to Chloe’s, forcing Neve to confront the part she played in events twenty-one years ago.
The story is told in dual timelines. In flashbacks we go back to the summer of 1998, when Neve and her six friends are hanging out and celebrating the end of their exams, unaware that before the summer ends one of them will vanish and the rest of them will see their lives changed forever. The flashbacks made the book feel part coming-of-age story, which I enjoyed, and felt authentic, bringing back memories of my own teenage years with friends in the late nineties, when we would hang out with just a curfew and there were no mobile phones and social media. I loved that these flashbacks gave the reader a sense of why Neve was so anxious about returning to the village while also providing a dual sense of mystery alongside what had happened to Jamie.
In the present day we follow Neve as she returns to the village and searches for Jamie, finding herself embroiled deeper in mystery and danger than she’d anticipated as it seems The Drifter, a mysterious man the friends saw near the mine when Chloe vanished, is back and taking his revenge on those who saw him all those years ago. The author did a great job of keeping the reader guessing and I was totally at a loss as to who The Drifter might be or what had happened to Chloe and Jamie.
The atmospheric, chilling, ghostly and claustrophobic small mining village was the perfect setting for the story, adding extra layers to the mystery and foreboding and casting its shadow over all who live there. The dual disappearances and timelines were easy to follow and as the tension was raised in the flashbacks, you could feel it increasing in the present day too as like Neve you became suspicious of everyone and didn’t know who to trust.
Dark Corners is a twisty, intriguing and cryptic thriller that I devoured in just a few hours. Cleverly written, it is filled with twists and turns that keep you guessing right up until the jaw-dropping finale. A great read for anyone who enjoys this genre.
Great opening which continued throughout the book. I loved both duel narratives. Especially the past chapters as I could relate growing up in the same era. The secrets surrounding the past was portrayed so well and the tension that continued to build throughout the plot never let up. Many times I was holding my breath and was the same with both fuel storylines!
O’Sullivan’s novels are always full of many threads of suspicion, the antagonist is never who you expect and there is always that little twist that you never even thought of. But the twists in this were like dynamite! The way the two timelines meet was executed to perfection!
This was phenomenal! As for his next book? How will he top this one?
If you haven’t read any of his previous books you need to add them to your to be read list! Start from book one and work your way through. You won’t be disappointed!
Setting: Nottinghamshire, UK. The book opens with main character Neve, partner with her friend Esther in a London tea shop, who is clearly struggling with life - regular drinker (if not an alcoholic) and still suffering nightmares from an incident during her teenage years some twenty years before in the Nottinghamshire former mining village which was her home. Neve was part of a group of seven schoolfriends, hanging around and messing around in the old mine buildings left behind after the colliery closed - until one night one of their friends, Chloe, went missing and blame was laid at the door of a mystery man seen around the village, dubbed The Drifter. Out of the blue, Neve is contacted by one of her former friends, Holly, telling her that her former boyfriend Jamie has gone missing in similar circumstances to that of Chloe twenty years before. Faced with her increasingly fragile mental state and an incident at her cafe, Neve is tempted to take some time off and return to her home village to help with the search for Jamie. Neve reconnects with her old friends, none of whom left the village, with varying levels of success as the search for Jamie continues. Is The Drifter back after all these years? Neve keeps thinking she sees him in the woods near the mine and outside her father's house but doesn't know if she is seeing things. In the face of increasing menace, Neve's return brings back her memories of what happened between the friends all those years ago, which are gradually revealed to the reader..... This is quite a dark story but I didn't enjoy it quite as much as other books I have read by this author. Partly this is because I wasn't particularly enamoured with Neve as a character - her behaviour towards her business partner and resorting to alcohol at every opportunity grated quite a lot - and there were also quite a lot of typos and missing words in my Kindle version of the book. There was also at least one inaccuracy when Neve's business partner rang 111 to update the police on an incident, when it should have been 101 (111 being NHS Direct's number!). Still enjoyed it overall and the ending was quite unexpected so would still rate it 8/10.
Well Darren has well and truly done it yet again, he has provided us with another outstanding brilliant and gripping read.
Darren has such a way with words that he just draws you in right from the beginning, keeps you enthralled/captivated throughout and leaves you with bated breath right to the very end. Which is exactly what he did with this amazing book.
The story plot was so well written that it had me sitting on the edge of my seat in eager anticipation as to what would happen next and I was forever guessing throughout as to how it would all end and who the hell was the Drifter!! I never did guess correctly thanks to all of the twists and turns that were cleverly woven into the story.
And as for that ending, well that left me somewhat speechless I can tell you. So didn't expect it to end the way it did at all. I'm not going to say anything more with respect to that as I certainly wouldn't want to ruin it for you all.
I have to say that I also felt somewhat freaked out by those mines, but that's purely because I'm not a fan of dark underground places that are closed in and so I would have found those mines highly claustrophobia. It certainly gave me the shivers whilst reading this story.
So if you are looking for a book that will have you sitting on the edge of your seat in eager anticipation as to what will happen next then and be completely captivated throughout, then you really need to read this book.
And in addition, if you haven't read any of Darren's previous books yet, then please do not wait any longer, I have read all of his books and can highly recommend them all.
Darren O'Sullivan was a new author to me, so I wasn't quite sure what to expect. All I knew was I loved a good psychological thriller and hoped that this would be one for me. I was not disappointed.
The main character for the book was Neve. I instantly warmed to her as there was something vulnerable about her. After her best friend went missing when they were young, she escaped her home town saying she'd never go back. She started a new life, and eventually became a part owner in a cafe with a friend. Her demons would not go away. Her life was becoming a mess. Strange things were happening. Then her first love Jamie went missing and she knew she had to go home.
The Author has developed some great characters in this book. Neve definitely being my favourite. I enjoyed how the relationship between Neve and her estranged Dad was written. It was very heartwarming.
The way the book went back in time and then brought us back to the present, was very well written and it helped you to connect with all the characters. There were several characters in the book, but it never got to the stage where you were confused about who was who, due to the way it was written.
There were so many twists and turns in the book, with a big one at the end. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book, and recommend it to those who like psychological thrillers by Authors like Louise Jensen and Teresa Driscoll. I am now seeking out more books by this Author.
Thank you to NetGalley for allowing me to read this in return for an honest review.
I think the cover and synopsis really intrigued me more to read this one and it didn't disappoint!
I was very quickly captivated by the plot and couldn't put it down, I was constantly thinking to myself 'just one more chapter', so I did read this one quite quickly. The book is very well written and doesn't go off in tangents, which is a bonus!
I did have an inkling half way through what was going to happen and did kind of get it right and there were a few parts in the book I thought wasn't really needed but it was still a great read in the end.
Overall, this was a great read, keeps you on your toes and captivates you in the first few chapters.
Thank you to HQ Stories and Darren O'Sullivan for sending me this book in exchange for a honest review.
This is the first book I’ve read by this author and certainly won’t be my last. Oh my goodness I’ve just been on a rollercoaster of a ride reading this. What a brilliant psychological thriller that was full of suspense and intrigue. I was hooked from the first page right up until the final sentence of the book.
This is my first book by this author and I hope it won't be my last. I really enjoyed it and look forward to more of his work. . A little slow to start I was soon caught up in the tension the book holds. Dark and twisted it leads you on a path of secrets. The characters were well developed and the setting was perfect for the climax of the book. . I loved the alternating past and present chapters, I really think this leads to a more immersive read. It was gripping and kept me wanting to read just that one more chapter. . Even though I did guess the twist towards the end it didn't spoil the book for me at all. . Also happy to find an author very local to me that I hope to continue reading.
Another amazing Book my Darren O'Sullivan .. the storyline the plot twist everything was amazing.. It's well written as within pages of reading i was in the world and mind of the story.. I'm not joking. The book takes you on a journey Which I feel everyone should look into reading. Amazon or Waterstones wherever you get it.. go get it. You won't be disappointed
I have been a fan of Darren's work for a little while now. I love his books and I couldn't wait to get my hands on a copy of his next book called 'Dark Corners'. Well ladies and gents, the wait is over as 'Dark Corners' was released in paperback and e-book format on 2nd April 2020. It's another deliciously dark and creepy story and I absolutely loved every single second of it. Neve is the main character of this story. She is a complex character. It's clear that something happened in her past, which haunts her to this day. Neve is just about holding it together but the brittle ties are in danger of cracking. Neve has never properly dealt with what happened and she has turned to alcohol as a coping mechanism. I am not sure whether or not she is an alcoholic or a heavy drinker. Neve works in a coffee shop with her best friend, but her best friend's patience is wearing thin as Neve has pushed her luck a bit too often. Things start happening that freak Neve out and she wonders who appears to have it in for her. Neve has spent a lot of time trying to forget what happened in the past but somebody is determined to make her remember. What happens? Well for the answer to that question and so much more you are just going to have to read the book for yourselves to find out as I am not going to tell you. Oh my word, 'Dark Corners' is Darren's best book to date. It is a deliciously creepy and twisty tale, which had me gripped and on the edge of my seat throughout. I was hooked on this book from the start and reading 'Dark Corners' became a serious addiction. It was an addiction that I wasn't willing to break. I binge read the book over the course of a single day, which is pretty good going for me. Normally I am easily distracted and I have the attention span of a gnat but not in this case. The pages turned increasingly quickly as my desperation to find out how the story concluded just grew and grew. All too quickly I reached the end of the story which I had mixed feelings about. Don't get me wrong I was pleased to finish because I knew how the story ended but I was enjoying the story, the characters and the author's writing style so much that I just wanted the book to continue. 'Dark Corners' is superbly written but then I think that to be true of all of Darren's books. Darren has one of those writing styles that is easy to get used to and easy to get along with. He grabs your attention from the start and draws you into the story to the extent that you live the story as if you were the main character. That's how I feel at any rate. The story is written using different timelines. One timeline details events as they happen in the present day and the other timeline describes events as they happened roughly twenty years earlier. The two timelines interlink really well and the story flows seamlessly as a result. In short, I thoroughly enjoyed reading 'Dark Corners' and I would definitely recommend it to other readers. I will definitely be reading more of Darren's work in the future. The score on the Ginger Book Geek board is a very well deserved 5* out of 5*.
Having read and loved this author's previous three books, I had high expectations going into this, his latest offering. I'm pleased to report that, once again, he did not disappoint. This book hit the ground running, held me captive throughout and spat me out at the end, exhausted but satisfied. Ok so, for full disclosure, I mostly guessed the ending. That said, all the way through I might have been wrong so it didn't take away any of the enjoyment of the journey the book took me on. Something horrible happened 20 years ago when Neve was a child. Her best friend Chloe went missing, never heard of again. Did she run away? Or did something happen to her? This shattered Neve's world so much that she escaped her home town shortly after, promising to leave that part of her life behind. Back in the present and Neve is doing OK, ticking over, but her past still haunts her. It's all dragged up once again when she hears that one of her other friends from back then, indeed, her first boyfriend, Jamie has also gone missing, echoing what happened before. This forces her to go back, return to where it all started, to help to try and find him. A decision that she didn't want to make but felt she had to. But will it be a decision she will live to regret... One of the things that really made this book for me was the use of the dual timelines. Easy to distinguish as they are written in first and third person, the parts in the past inject just enough of the right information to complement what is going on in the present. It's obvious that the characters have a BIG secret that they are hiding, all coping with what happened in different ways, but it's the drip-feeding of that which kept me on my toes throughout. Enough was exposed to keep me interested but enough kept back to keep me intrigued. Needing to read on. Wanting to know the absolute truth. Apart from this, there were also a few side-stories along the way which actually made this a more rounded read rather than just being about the main story. I hasten to say that these did not distract at all from the main aspects of the book, rather they just fleshed it all out a bit. With now four winners in my eyes under his belt. I am really chomping at the bit to see what he could possible serve up next time to top this... My thanks go to the Publisher and Netgalley for the chance to read this book.
A 5 star read and a brilliant and gripping dark thriller!
Neve Chambers lives in London and is the co-owner of a coffee shop called The Tea Tree. Although far away from the location of a tragic past event, Neve's memories still haunt her and spill over into her current life. Her fiance leaves and while she seeking solace in alcohol, it begins to affect her work and things come to a head when the cafe gets broken into. This is followed by the news that Neve's first boyfriend Jamie has gone missing and leads to Neve taking a trip back to her hometown (a small mining village) to help with the search.
The story jumps back and forth from past to present;- Summer 1998 (the year when Neve's best friend Chloe went missing) to the current time effortlessly. We follow Neve through thrilling real-time events alongside the background story before Chloe went missing. Wwe learn about the gang of teenage friends who Neve leaves behind and some aren't pleased to see her return. All have been affected by Chloe's disappearance in different ways. We also learn of the mysterious 'Drifter' who was hanging around at the time of Chloe's disappearance and is back sinisterly lurking in the shadows to greet Neve's arrival. Soon the original gang are all back together, all that's missing is Chloe and now Jamie, and you have to ask yourself, is Jamie's disappearance related to what happened in the past?
The story starts off slow but the plot is well placed and before you know it, you're pulled into a dark and twisted tale which keeps your head spinning. Fully developed characters and strong descriptive writing really bring this sinister story and it's small mining village to life. I loved the flashbacks between past and present and how the parallels of the story unfolded - nothing was what it seemed! It was hard to put this book down and take a break from reading!
I was #gifted this book in exchange for an honest review.
I think it's fair to say that Neve thinks she has everything under control and that her life is perfect. The truth is harder to acknowledge. She likes a drink, or two or perhaps a few bottles. She is unreliable when it comes to work, which is taking its toll on her colleague.
She blames it on her crumbling relationship with her fiancee, but perhaps the turbulence in her past has a lot to do with it. Something to do with the fact her best friend disappeared into thin air when they were teenagers.
Now another one of her friends has also mysteriously disappeared and she has no choice but to return to the scene of her teenage nightmares. Perhaps this time she can actually help solve the mystery that has caused years of anxiety and dark thoughts.
It's a psychological thriller that creeps up on you and surrounds you silently.
At the end of the day it's hard to balance the right and the wrongs in this story. When you do something you categorically know is wrong, even if it is to save your own skin, then a part of you will always dwell on the fact it was wrong. How that guilt manifests itself can be different for each person. Substance abuse, inability to have stable relationships or mental health issues. Unless you have some sort of psychopathology you will probably feel your conscience in some way or other.
When you take the entirety of the plot - not giving anything away - the way certain people ease their own conscience by placing blame on others is perhaps the most interesting element of the story. Probably one that will lead to discussions about guilt and blame. The stories that sit on the boundaries are the ones that make you think. *I received a courtesy copy*
Dark Corners begins back in 1998 when Neve and her friends are teenagers living in a mining village, they are all very close and then Chloe goes missing, what follows this disappearance brings huge ramifications to the lives of those closest to her and things will never be the same again.
Fast forward 20 years and Neve is living in London, running her own business with her friend, Esther, when she receives news that Jamie, her first boyfriend and one of the group of friends back then, has gone missing too, the events very similar to all those years ago and all the memories of that fateful night come flooding back. Neve finds herself returning to the village she said she'd never go back to, to help search for him. This is a story of friendship, love, secrets, lies & revenge and secrets have a habit of hiding in dark corners, will Neve's return to the village reveal those secrets, someone out there is determined it will...
The story is told over two timelines, both by Neve; the first in 1998 during her childhood and the events leading up to Chloe's disappearance and the present day. It is clear from her behaviour that she's never got over what happened but, by returning to the village, she's hoping to make amends. Darren O'Sullivan knows how to create a plot that will draw you in, making it eerie and so full of suspense, that the twist will leave you gasping. I changed my mind so many times on who I thought was responsible but was gobsmacked when it was finally revealed, very cleverly crafted Mr O'Sullivan! It's a great book, which I highly recommend, I just wish real life didn't keep getting in the way of these fabulous reads!
I would like to thank HQ and Netgalley for the approval, I will post my review on Amazon and Goodreads.
Thanks HQ for a copy of this book in exchange for an honest opinion.

Thoughts 💭: Have you ever read a book you’ve had to stop yourself reading it that quick because it’s just that good and you want to saver it? That is this book! There was so many twists and turns I changed my mind about twenty times at who was doing all this, I still got it wrong ha! Neve is a good character, she is very withdrawn after what happened to Chloe all them years ago. Then an old friend messages her and says Neves first boyfriend Jamie has went missing. How can Neve say no to go and help? When she goes so many secrets come out! Ive not read any of Darren O’Sullivans books before, it didn’t disappoint and I can’t wait to read his other 3 books!
Set in a dying village in the shadow of a closed coalmine, the brooding atmosphere of this book echoed the brooding atmosphere of the landscape. Six adults haunted by the events of their teenage years over 20 years before, just as haunted as the mines they explored as children, where they seen ghosts both real and imagined. The only thing lacking in this book for me was the fact that I did not warm to the main character at all. I find her bland and pathetic, and quite often wanted to shake her and say just get a grip of your life and stop blaming your past for all your present mistakes. Has she been at all a nice character, I might have afforded her more sympathy. One star deducted because while I find their characters were well drawn as teenagers, as 30 something adults they seem to have no personality or characteristics to set them apart from each other at all. Maybe this was deliberate on the part of the author, to represent the fact that they never really moved on from age 16, or maybe it is just bad characterisation. Either way, it spoilt the book somewhat for me. Having now finished the book, I wonder if the fact that the main character isn’t very sympathetic is a clever ploy by the author to make sure we also have sympathy for the other characters. I certainly know whose side I was on by the end. And excellent book and will definitely read more by this author.
Dark Corners by Darren O’Sullivan is a cracking psychological thriller that will have the hairs on the back of your neck rising as the tension builds. The novel has two time frames – now and twenty one years earlier – the action is inextricably linked. The reader holds their breath as the novel counts down from six weeks before the event. It was to be an event from which no one recovered and an event which would forever bind the people together. Secrets unite and secrets split apart. A secret shared may be a trauma released or a burden picked up. PTSD follows the characters down the years. Someone is out for revenge – but who could it be? Try as I might, I failed to guess (again.) For years the small town was united by the mine, but now it is empty. Will it ever reveal its secrets? A cold case is connected to present day disappearances. Can you solve the case before the police do? Once again Darren O’Sullivan has produced a fabulous novel that consumed my every waking moment. I totally ‘lived’ the action and cannot wait for more by him. I received this book for free. A favourable review was not required and all views expressed are my own.
Neve left the mining village where she grew up after her best friend Chloe disappeared. Now, after the breakup of her relationship, and struggling to run a business with her friend, she returns to help in the search for another friend, and her first love, Jamie.
The story switches between the present day, and the events of twenty-one years ago. This is done very well, and there is no confusion. The plot is quite complex and there are lots of twists and turns to keep mystery fans happy, and the atmosphere is quite spooky. The writing is very good in places, particularly in the evocative descriptions of the abandoned mine, the headframe watching over everything.
But I did find it hard to really connect to the characters, which made it difficult to really feel the tension. and there were quite a few errors in the text, including a lot of unintentional switches from past to present tense in the earlier chapters.
I also found the ending a bit of a disappointment.
So, not for me, unfortunately, but the book does have a lot of really great reviews, so the author is worth checking out if you’re a fan of the mystery genre.
Overall I would say the book was well written in the sense that that author was very descriptive so I was able to visually follow along. However, I felt there was too much background prior to something engaging happening. Although the background was needed to fully understand the ending (which I enjoyed) the book packed no punch.
I was forcing myself to keep reading hoping something interesting would happen, but nothing. I was on chapter 40 and was still being filled with background information. When it comes to thrillers I typically like action right out the gate or at least every few chapters to keep me going.
I wouldn’t consider this book a page turner at all. I will say I didn’t put together what was really happening until nearly the end of the book, which is good I guess that the author didn’t spoil it. But again compared to thrillers I tend to love this book took entirely too long to catch my interest.
Dark Corners follows Neve, a woman who suffered trauma as a child which is still haunting her in adulthood. When one of her childhood friends goes missing, she returns to the village she grew up in for the first time in twenty-one years to find the ghosts she was running from are still waiting for her.
There are two timelines in the novel: one telling the story of Neve's childhood and the run up to the event which haunts her and her friends, the other giving Neve's present day experiences. As well as being clearly labelled, these are easily distinguished by switching between first person (now) and third person (the past). O'Sullivan's descriptions of the setting put me deliciously on edge and, as events began to unfold with ever quickening pace, I was totally gripped.
Creepy, tense and with a chilling ending, this one packs a punch. I'm not sure how well I'll sleep tonight...
