The official art book for Hideo Kojima's DEATH STRANDING.
After the collapse of civilization, Sam Bridges must journey across a ravaged landscape crawling with otherworldly threats to save mankind from the brink of extinction. From legendary game creator Hideo Kojima comes an all-new, genre-defying experience for the PlayStation(R)4 system. In the near future, mysterious explosions have rocked the planet, setting off a series of supernatural events known as the Death Stranding. With spectral creatures plaguing the landscape, and the planet on the verge of a mass extinction, it's up to Sam Bridges to journey across the ravaged continent and save mankind from impending annihilation.
The Art of Death Stranding is packed with hundreds of pieces of concept art for the characters, equipment, locations and creatures featured in the game, as well as early and unused concepts, including artwork by acclaimed artist Yoji Shinkawa.

Death Stranding was my first Hideo Kojima game, and it floored me. Its world, its characters, its ambience, and its design, all went a long way to making it a very memorable gaming experience—one that has stuck with me even still. Its aesthetic gripped me in such a way that I knew I wanted to own this book; to see the roots of Yoji Shinkawa and team's vision. It is incredible work.
Very lovely art book for a very complex game. However, I’d been hoping for a lot more substance on the characters. Most of the book concerns background design (which is extremely detailed and impressive), but not a lot on how the characters were rendered etc.
Excellent art book of the PS4/PS5 game Death Stranding. As someone currently playing through the game, this was an excellent addition to the world created and gives a bit further insight to the final design. Totally recommended
This book felt like stepping into a museum curated by a beautifully deranged visionary — The Art of Death Stranding is eerie, breathtaking, and absolutely soaked in atmosphere. Every page hums with that otherworldly Kojima energy: bleak landscapes, uncanny creatures, and designs so strange and elegant they almost make sense… until they don’t, and your brain does a little somersault. The BTs and environmental concepts in particular had me staring far too long, thinking, “Yes, this is horrific, but also? Stunning.”
The presentation is immaculate — a true celebration of visual storytelling. The mix of concept art, notes, and behind-the-scenes glimpses gives you a deeper appreciation for how meticulously this world was constructed. It’s moody, cinematic, and wildly inspiring, especially if you’re the kind of person who loves peeking behind the curtain at how nightmares are made beautiful. I recommend it with my whole artsy, slightly spooky heart.
A very good art book of one of my favourite games.
The only thing holding this particular art book back, though, is the lack of detailed text to accompany the gorgeous artwork. It would have been nice to have a bit of a deeper dive into the artistic decisions behind certain designs and such.
Some excellent concept pieces about the design of the gear and tools that Sam gets to use in the game. It was also interesting to see how the evolution of the BT's came about.
Some really great large page spreads of environment art help bursting with colour and detail that immerses fans of this game that little bit more.
Not quite as detailed as I would've liked, but nevertheless a very extensive collection of used and unused concept artwork, with the occasional bit of illustrative commentary. (Some of it quite fun - do I detect frustration in the couple of terse remarks about difficulty keeping the monster designs grounded and plausible?) The huge format is put to good use with spreads of the larger conceptual pieces towards the end. It puts the game in context nicely, helping clarify what they were originally shooting for in some of the more obscure or scaled-back moments, and Shinkawa's mechanical drawings with all their reasoned-out technical details are, as usual, fun to pore over.
My one frustration is that the artists aren't named for the various drawings. You can recognise Shinkawa's art a mile away but I'm not familiar enough with the others to identify their work.
"The Art of Death Stranding" is a stunning masterpiece of a book that explores the breathtaking visuals, themes, and concepts of one of the most innovative video games of recent years. This book is a true treasure for fans of the game and lovers of art alike. The book is filled with incredible artwork, from concept sketches to fully rendered illustrations, showcasing the vast and unique landscapes of the game, as well as the striking designs of its characters and creatures.
What sets this book apart, however, is the level of detail that is put into each piece of artwork. Each page is rich with information and insight into the creative process behind the game. The book features extensive interviews with the game's creator, Hideo Kojima, and members of the development team, providing a behind-the-scenes look at the creation of this groundbreaking game. I particularly enjoyed reading about the game's inspirations, which range from sci-fi films to the work of famous artists and writers.
But "The Art of Death Stranding" is not just a beautiful coffee table book; it's also a valuable addition to the understanding of the game's themes and narrative. The book dives into the symbolism and themes that underpin the game, exploring the ideas of life, death, and human connection. It's clear that a lot of thought and intention went into the creation of this game, and the book does a fantastic job of conveying that.
Overall, "The Art of Death Stranding" is an absolute must-have for fans of the game and lovers of art. The book is a testament to the creativity and vision of Hideo Kojima and his team, and it's a true joy to explore the world of Death Stranding through its pages. 5/5 stars, without a doubt.
