"Do we not have four-wheel drive? Are we not in a car with four wheels?"

4.5 stars

8/21/19:

Hooray! After months of reading only audio books to boost my productivity, I'm finally indulging in a Kindle book because I was honored to receive an ARC copy from an author I admire. The story started with a bang!

8/22/19:

The point of view switches back and forth between a Regency gentleman in 1816 England and a present-day woman. From the Regency era is Julian St. John, a 34-year-old gentleman - a former rake who "got religion." He likes to read and loves to gallop on his horse, as he "was born for speed." He is, against his wishes, being ruthlessly pursued by a young lady who wishes to marry him.

In 2020, in snowy Maine is Claire, a struggling author. (She was born in 1994, putting her at about 26.) Claire is holed up in her grandmother's cottage - her grandmother who has been missing for the past year - trying to write a book that will be successful. A book that will be a "game-changer" and will save her writing career.

"... this new book which she called Forever, Lately. Later, when it all fell apart, Claire would wonder how she'd stumbled upon real people to inhabit her story. If she'd known they were real, she might have known, too, that they wouldn't ever do as she planned."

"Claire felt as though she'd watched the scene unfold more than written it.

To complicate matters, she is being pestered to sell the two acres of land her grandmother's house sits on. A local family wishes to absorb the land into their ski resort, which surrounds the property on all sides.

8/23/19:

What I liked

*The story. The story was fantastic!

*Interspersed throughout the story are Claire's personal notes - though I'm unclear whether they're written or recorded. Either way, they amused me.

*Even though there were quite a few kisses, they were not steamy. Ms. Burkard did an excellent job of conveying deep feeling without having to resort to steamy kisses.

8/27/19:

*This time-travel story has been lots of fun, with the time travel behaving in a way that satisfies me. I don't mind the occasional time-travel story, but I often have niggling "but....." questions. I've been perfectly happy to accept whatever time-travel stuff the author has thrown at me as the reader. And I haven't seen any timey-wimey inconsistencies within the book. Hoorah!

8/31/19:

Things I didn't like:

*I would have liked more dialogue between the main characters in the earlier part of the book to further convince me that they are in love.

Christian content: It looks like other than Julian having reformed and enjoying reading religious texts, I don't get the impression that this is really Christian fiction. [Update 9/1/19: Ms. Burkard confirmed that it's not CF because CF publishers disliked the fantasy element.]

Content:

*A British swear - "He wished he could tell her to , to plague him with her incessant fooleries, but he was too much a gentleman - by God, he would be a gentleman."

*There's a fair amount of drinking in the story. Drinking alcohol was commonplace in the Regency period. Water was frequently unsanitary.

*Also, sex mentioned a couple of times in a couple of different contexts, but in a way that didn't bother my conservative tastes. I'd not recommend this book for younger teens.

-------------------------

About ten years ago, I enjoyed Ms. Burkard's Regency trilogy. One of these days, I want to re-read book one and give it a proper review. Before the Season Ends is an entertaining Christian Regency romance that I enjoyed so much that I've kept my eye on Ms. Burkard since then, hoping for a new Regency. This week I am so happy to be reading her latest ahead of the release. (I've not yet read her dystopian trilogy because it's really not my genre and because I'm a bit of a chicken - but maybe someday!)

[updated 9/1/19: The author confirmed that the issues with the dashes were fixed, so I'm removing that comment from my "dislikes" section.]

Forever, Lately is a fun, time-traveling, Regency romp. It was just the light, fun book I needed. I don't usually read books like this, but it was just an all-around fun time. The romance perhaps moves a bit faster than my preference, but the Regency hero is pretty dashing, so I made some allowances. It's all very romantic, with plenty of swoony kisses and things threatening to keep them apart. There's not a lot of technical reasoning going on behind the time-travel either, so don't try to figure it all out, just enjoy the fun!

This is my first read by the author, and I'll definitely seek out some of her previous books, as well as look forward to what she might come out with next.

I received a complimentary copy of this novel from the author. I was not required to post a review, positive or otherwise. This review is my honest opinion.

A delicious romp through time that will keep you on the edge of your seat!
This was such a fun read. The plot moved quickly to the expected time-travel and then didn't stop! A hilarious mix of back-and-forth, misunderstandings, some people knowing too much and others not believing enough, all combine into one nail-biting experience that doesn't hit the brakes until the final pages. St. John insists he was "born for speed" so reader, be ready!

Some mature themes were alluded to, or briefly mentioned, but handled with care. I wished that more time could be spent on deepening our relationship with the characters, but the high speed pace of the story (and the impending deadline) make a quick, light-and-fluffy, "you just know" kind of romance more realistic.

Make sure you have time off when this book finally lands in your hands - you're going to want some uninterrupted reading time!

I received a complimentary copy of this book. I was not required to write a positive review. All opinions expressed are mine alone.

Forever, Lately was a delightful surprise! Time travel books can be pretty tricky to pull off well, but Burkard did just that – with an engaging balance of charm, wit, and romance. The mechanics of the time travel are smartly plotted and cleverly presented, and now I want a prayer shawl… and a cottage in Maine… just in case.

I love that Claire’s a writer & that she ends up in the world she thought she had created. (a fun twist to be had there, as well!) Speaking of Claire, she’s a genuinely likable protagonist and readers will easily find themselves relating to her even if said readers are neither writers nor time travelers themselves. I loved her ‘notes to self’, though I wished they had continued all the way through; they cleverly give us insight into Claire’s emotions or thoughts without the author having to specifically tell us.

And then there’s St. John. SWOON ALERT! A redeemed rogue whose resolve toward gentlemanly behavior is sorely tested by Claire and how she utterly intrigues him. His intentionally scandalous kiss – after making sure the maid is watching to confirm his rogueish behavior for wooing-certainty purposes – may make you as weak in the knees as it does Claire. There are also times when he’s channeling Hugh Jackman in Kate & Leopold but with more humor, and he’s so endearing in those moments that he’ll have you grinning through entire conversations.

Bottom Line: Forever, Lately by Linore Rose Burkard is smart and witty, heartfelt and romantic. There are some characters you’re meant to love – and you do – and some characters you’re meant to strongly dislike – and you do. Several surprising twists keep you on the edge of your reading chair and along for the ride, and the swoonilicious romance has you hoping for the power of true love to cross time. I would love to spend more time with these characters – please say a sequel (and maybe even a prequel!) is planned!

This book is about an author who writes Regency romances. One is made to believe that she is fairly successful despite her last two books are being flops.
She does lots of research on the topic, but when she gets thrown back in time (or into the beginnings of the novel she is writing, one cannot be sure how this comes together) she is continuously unchaperoned with the male protagonist. Sure, it is mentioned that she should not be, but yet - they are! Then he thinks she is lying her way back to China, and yet he feels compelled to kiss her. Her. Who is a 21st century woman in at least her mid twenties and tells him in the first hour of their acquaintance than she is a virgin. Holy Cow!
This story was in so many ways wrong, I couldn't wrap my mind around it. And I LOVE time travel and regency romance!
Very disappointing.

I’ve read a couple of very popular time travel books (The Time Traveler’s Wife and Jude Devereaux’s A Knight in Shining Armor). So when Forever, Lately came to my attention, I figured I’d give it a try, especially since I’m a Regency romance fan. And, let me tell you, this one is enchanting.

This book is so clever. From who Claire is transported to her struggles and challenges in both eras. The fact she’s an author who is excited to use her first-hand knowledge of regency is also a fantastic plot device. Plus, she’s so enjoyable inquisitive when in 1816.

And Julian St. John. Talk about a swoon-worthy hero. I loved some of the humor written around St. John in the second half of the book.

Burkard throws some delicious twists and turns into this one, making it even better. Whether or not you’re a fan of the time travel genre, the characters and romance in this one are worth the read.

I am not usually a fan of historical romance, and so I was initially drawn to read this book because of the time travel element. So while I came for the time travel, I also found myself gripped by the romance! Forever, Lately is a beautiful tale of a love that reaches across time and countries. I was captured by the characters and the twists and turns they have to navigate along the way. The author’s descriptions and dialogue are very enjoyable, not only helping the reader to really know the characters, but also experience the plot along with them. I felt like I was there with them! In fact, I will miss spending time with the protoganists now that I’ve finished the book. I recommend it to science fiction and romance readers alike!

This was one of the most delightful regency romances I have ever read. Burkard has done a splendid job of intertwining a time travel from current day to the regency period with various characters doing the traveling. Add to that a sweet female character from the present and a conniving female from the past that look like twins and have similar names, a present day grandmother who has been missing for some time and shows up in the past, and a swoonworthy hero and you have a novel that can't miss. Full of humor, whimsy and great regency detail, I loved every minute of this rollicking story, and the ending was absolutely perfect.

March 1816, England. Lenore Rose Burkard’s Forever, Lately, A Regency Time Travel Romance, contains some extremely clever ideas and plot lines. I was even reading parts to my husband. The characters are realistically written. I especially enjoyed Margaret, Clarrissa’s younger sister, Julian St. John (delightful), & Lady Ashworth. Claire, the protagonist, is a writer who loves the Regency Period of England. She is living in Dove Cottage in the great state of Maine (a very favorite of mine) attempting to revive her writing career. Then Claire is at a ball in Regency London 1816 where she meets Julian St. John who is being continually pursued by Clarissa Andrews. Suffuse it to say Julian prefers Claire. The author writes some brilliant scenes, but about a half way through the book, I started to get bored. I also figured out most of what happened way before it took place. The ending (last couple of pages) are great fun! 3 stars.

Forever Lately by Linore Rose Burkard is an unusual time-travel romance.

“It is difficult, when faced with a situation you cannot control, to admit you can do nothing. “ Lemony Snicket; “You need to be a little bit crazy. Crazy is the price you pay for having an imagination.” Ruth Ozeki; “ When you are imagining, you might as well imagine something worthwhile.” Lucy Maud Montgomery. These are some of the quotes that begin each chapter in this fantasy story. They are thought provoking and a real hoot! The chapters vary in length which makes for more enjoyable pacing.
The cover piqued my interest with its pretty silhouette of figures in Regency garb. I have always been fascinated by time travel books and movies.
For Maine author, Claire Channing, the characters in the book she is writing just won’t behave! Especially when she finds herself in a ballroom, in period clothes, in England, in 1816!
This was a sometimes funny, sometimes serious but always entertaining glimpse into Regency England through the eyes of a 21st Century woman. Thrown back in time, Claire tries to cope and make sense of things when she falls in love with Julian St. John. Funnier still is when Julian tries to figure out modern day conveniences on his trip to the future. Which era will they end up in? How will they solve this conundrum?
This story had me quickly turning pages to see how the well-drawn characters would respond the to danger confronting them. Ms. Burkard has taken a unique premise and further tuned it on its head.
Wonderful story that seemed perfectly logical to me!
A few things were concerning to me:
Not much talk about God but there was a quote from psalms and a few references to Julian finding God and reforming.
A few descriptions of low necklines and some kissing scenes that didn’t go too far. Some may find it a touch too much.
I would call it clean but not overtly Christian.

Move over, Poldark! Julian St. John is our new English heartthrob! Okay, I know I’m mixing historical periods, but who cares as long as we’re having fun? And the fun is on with Burkard’s cast of mismatched, mischievous characters. Besides St. John, we have Claire, a modern-day Regency Romance novelist who’s trying to make a comeback.

Complication 1: These two potential lovebirds have the problem of being separated by a couple of centuries. Then there’s Claire’s mysterious missing grandmother, in whose cottage Claire is working feverishly on her Regency novel.

Complication 2: The clock is ticking until developers, one of whom is sweet on Claire, raze the cottage in Grandmother’s absence. There’s also a mysteriously mystical shawl Grandmother left behind....

Burkard really brings it with humor, lively action, and a supporting cast that remind me of the classic Rom Coms of Doris Day and Katharine Hepburn. Everyone is going every which way to get what they want, and readers find themselves cheering and booing with every turn of the page. It’s good, clean fun.

I highly recommend this read. Whether you’re a fan of romance novels or time-travel novels - or neither - you’re bound to enjoy the ride!

Fun Romance

This was a fun read. I haven't read many time travel books, but I may now after reading this one. I've often wondered how cool it would be to go back in time for just a day. Only one day though, because I like diet coke and toilet paper, among other things. So, this book was about an author writing regency era romances and one day she sees her hero in her yard. Y'all this is where the fun starts. The hero was very handsome Regency man and she was a beautiful Heroine from the future.
I enjoyed the book. I felt it might could have been a bit shorter of a read, but all in all I'm very glad to experience this travel in time.

Thank you to the Interviews and Reviewers for sending an Arc copy of this book for me to review (I plan to reread it in February as well) I received this book through the Author on interviews and Reviewers Website.

This book reminded me a lot of other Historical Fiction Books ive read but the Tim Travel Part of it really drew me in. It was a very interesting and steady book to read. The characters were really funny at times and the Plot/Setting of the book seemed perfect especially this time of year.

This was my first time reading a book by Linore and might I say she is one of my favorite Historical Fiction Authors now :)

Can't wait to read more of her books in the future!!

When I started reading this book, I was a little puzzled and I wanted to give up, but I am glad I didn't, the story become so interesting. I don't usually read dual time books... But this one was so good.

Claire is a young writer who loves regency and is able to travel in the past and meets some of the characters she's writing about, she will also fall in love and will have to chose where she wants to stay in the present to pursue her career or follow her heart and stay in past.

This was a beautiful and funny read.

My friend recommended and bought me a copy of one of her favorite books, and I was not disappointed. This may be a new favorite of mine. It's based both in the past in England, 1816 & in America present time. It's a Historical Time-Traveling Romnce. I loved the characters and the settings. The author did a fabulous job with this story, and I can't wait to read the next book in this series.

Forever, Lately by Linore Rose Burkard takes us back to 1816 in London where Julian St. John is looking for a bride. He promised his former guardian he would settle down this year, but Julian is determined his bride will not Clarissa Andrews. Clarissa set her sights on him at the beginning of the season and has pulled several dangerous stunts, or larks as she calls them, to capture his attention.

In present day Maine, Claire Channing has moved into her Dove Cottage, which belongs to her missing grandmother, to write a bestseller. Her last two Regency novels have been flops and Claire is determined this one will be a success. Claire pulls the tallit (prayer shawl) of grandmothers about her shoulders as she begins to write, and she suddenly finds herself in the Regency ballroom of her novel. Claire looks across the room to see Julian St. John. She believes it is her vivid imagination until she finds herself transported again. Claire is captivated by Julian and Julian is equally intrigued much to Clarissa Andrew’s consternation. Claire soon learns that she has less than two weeks to prevent a deadly tragedy while trying to keep bulldozers from demolishing Dove Cottage.

Forever, Lately is an intriguing time travel romance. Julian St. John is a dashing heroine, Clarissa Andrews is a wicked, wily woman, and Claire Channing is our damsel in the past with a determination to succeed in the present. One of my favorite characters is Clarissa’s younger sister, Margaret. She is a clever young woman and she provided some humorous moments. The story switches back and forth from present day to the past with the POV switching between characters. The chapters are short and quick to read. I thought the author captured the speech of Regency era people, and I loved the descriptions of the rooms from that time period along with the beautiful clothes. There is intrigue and suspense with some tense moments. I would have liked, though, more backstory on Claire and there were several loose threads at the end of the book (which left me frustrated). Forever, Lately is a charming time travel story with engaging characters and a unique method of time travel. Forever, Lately is a captivating time travel romance with a reformed rake, a tricky temptress, a detestable developer, and a resolute writer.

That was the plan, the outline she’d labored over for this new book which she called Forever, Lately. Later, when it all fell apart, Claire would wonder how she’d stumbled upon real people to inhabit her story. If she’d known they were real, she might have known, too, that they wouldn’t ever do as she planned.

Note to self: If characters are going to change from what the writer envisioned, they must do so early on in the writing.

Right off the bat as soon as I read these lines, I KNEW this was going to be a fun read! How many times have I heard authors say this very thing, that their characters simply won’t cooperate? As if they completely took over the story & ripped it out of the writer’s hand, lol! I’ve never read time travel novels but I absolutely adore Regency fiction so I figured the combination of the two would be delightful. This was so much more than I expected, in a good way, and all the plot twists keep me wondering where Burkard would take me next. I fell hard for Julian St. John at first glance and was quite jealous that Claire stole his interest. But at the same time, I loved watching from the sidelines the interactions between author and characters. It was a very interesting perspective! There were quite a few places where I couldn’t help but laugh and quite a few that I wanted to tell Miss Clarissa Andrews off. She was no lady, at least not a respectable one the way she prowled around St John trying to manipulate his affections. The whole idea of time traveling to & living in the Regency era was intriguing; one I wished could happen for real because I’d be the first to sign up! This was a delightful adventure all around and would satisfy the heart of any Regency era fiction fan. Linore Burkard is one to keep my eye out for; she quickly became a favorite of mine! I have since added her to my list of must-read Regency authors.

Male lead is both a misogynistic and a racist (wow he can be both!), and our female heroine can never cease to remind what a natural beauty she is and how makeup and form fitting clothing are for sluts and attention-seeking women. But it’s fine that he calls a Hispanic couple slaves because he’s cute?? And he likes our heroine because she’s childlike and delusional, which is of course so endearing, so much so that he wants to marry her. And our “reformed” rake seems to ravish her at the earliest opportunity—with or without her consent. What a great message!

The word choice was decent and the writing could have been commendable, yet there were points in the plot or descriptions that were vague or unexplained. Needless to say, plot holes were rampant and scenes would jump around with no explanation as to why.

The plot idea had so much potential, and yet the worst features were exploited and made the focal point of the book. I really wanted to like this, but it’s a book that—if liked—puts one’s morals into question.

A wonderful romp through the world of the Regency England through the eyes of a modern-day woman. Truly fun time travel by supernatural means rather than a time machine. The romance is poignant and sweet with both the hero and the heroine having to make tough choices. Julian St. John and Claire Channing seem to be meant for each other. The only thing that separates them is time! Author Linore Rose Burchard adds clever plot twists and dialog. It’s the kind of book worth reading a second time. I truly enjoyed it. Highly recommend!

The Most Fascinatingly Lovely Book I've Ever Read!

Forever, Lately: A Regency Time Travel Romance, is book 1 in the Forever in Time series, written by Linked Rose Burkard. This is the first book I have read by this author, but it won't be the last one. In every time travel romance, there is a source from which makes time travel possible. In Laura Wells's time travel series, it is a group of enchanted Scottish wells. In Phyllis Wheeler's books for children, one of the sources is a grandfather clock. In C. S. Lewis's "The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe", it is the wardrobe closet that transports the children into another realm. In this book, the author uses a magical lacy Jewish prayer shawl, a tallit, to transport the main characters back and forth between 2016 and 1816. This story is about a Regency Romance writer who needs to get a third book published, but no one wants to buy it. She creates the perfect characters and has the perfect story to tell, but something is missing. She is staying in her maternal grandmother's home, a cottage in Maine, U.S.A. in the 21st Century, probably 2016. Her grandmother disappeared about 20 years earlier when Claire was a little girl. She only met her grandmother a few times before her mother put a stop to her visits. Mother said her grandmother was crazy, insane, claiming to have visions. No one has seen her grandmother for nearly 20 years, but she still has a cottage and a bank account. The cottage is on an extremely large piece of property owned by a wealthy man and his son, and they want to buy the cottage and tear it down to create a ski slope for their resort. This destruction is set for a few weeks in the future. It is about this time that Claire puts her grandmother's shawl about her shoulders while she's typing up her future Regency novel, when she is transported back to Regency England of 1816, and she's fully dressed in Regency English romance clothing, including the tallit. She meets the characters in her novel, from Julian St. John to Miss Clarissa Andrews and Clarissa 15 year old sister, Margaret Andrews. She meets the butler, valet, and maids. Then a few days later, she meets Lady Ashworth, who just so happens to be her long lost grandmother. The people are not novel characters, but real-life people. When she is swept back to 2016, she researches these characters online and finds out that a terrible accident is supposed to kill Julian a few weeks from when she left him. An innocent man is going to be accused and convicted for the accident, and the actual culprit will get away with it. Can Claire save both Julian and the other innocent man? She has fallen in love with Julian, and he's fallen for her. Other people have seen Claire vanish when she returns to the future and appear when she arrives in 1816. Will these people help or hinder her in her mission to save Julian? And what about her newly revised novel, filled with actual, realistic, relevant new Regency characters? Will is be a flop or a smash hit? And will Claire remain in 2016? Or will she return to 1816, forever? This book has more than one time traveler, blessings of the shawl. Who will stay in their own time, and who will stay in the alternate timeline? I gave this book 5 stars and will read book 2, the sequel, next.

Only for people looking for time travel novels with an unstable time element (meaning there is a flicker to and fro rather than a set time with somebody out of place). I read it in the mood for time travel, and it takes too much a centre stage in this book to enjoy it if that's not what you're interested in.

I enjoyed the story. Claire is enjoyable character though both the regency characters - St John and Clarissa could be slightly more developed. The redemption arc doesn't really come into play until the final scene which I find makes a lot of the book drag with unnecessary tension.

I enjoyed the flickering timeline element and how well developed both the present day and historical period was in this book. It was a nice balance. It is a clean romance but I enjoyed the process of the main leads succumbing to love at first sight.

Something about time travel draws me in every time. This one is extra fun with unique twists in the present and the past. Clever portals allow the characters to enter the worlds of 1816 England and present day Maine. Oh, about the ending! Well, I can't tell you that except I Loved it. Bravo, Linore Burkard.

Mrs Burkard has not written a Regency for years, and this was quite different from her other books. Yet I would argue it marks her return to the genre with a proverbial bang.

Forever Lately its a fun Regency read with time travel thrown in. One of the best aspects of this novel is that its not a typical Regency or a typical Time Travel story. Rather than one character traveling to the past and staying there for the duration of the story, characters from each time travel back and forth. Which makes for some awkward, but also rather amusing situations.

The characterization was great. Claire Channing is a reclusive and slightly cooky author who writes- Regency Romances. In fact, at first you can't tell if the Regency characters simply from her story, or their own people.
Claire is clever and strong, but vulnerable and not very confident, and doesn't really know how to handle men who might be interested in her.

Her struggles as a failing author are authentically described, and they sort of make her early time travel escapades more credible. Claire believes her experiences are very vivid dreams involving the , and just takes them in her stride because they're really detailed and might add to her work.

The device of time travel was quite convincing (well as much as it can be), and at time hilarious. Initially, Claire believes she is imagining scenes from her books, and can't understand why the Regency people won't act according to her chapter plan.
Elsewhere, believes the experience might be bought on by visiting water closets and starts seeking one out.

The author also managed to deliver, in Julian St. John, the trope of the reformed rake without being too cliched or predictable. The villain, Julian's unwanted suitor Clarissa is just so delightfully devious, wicked and catty. Thought things are made more complicated when it emerges she looks exactly like Claire.

The story switches between the perspective of Julian, Claire and Clare's grandmother, and switches between times quite a bit. Some chapters are only a page or two long, so the story moves along at quite a rapid pace but its quite easy to keep up with what is going on.

The parts set in Regency England are suitably detailed and convincing, and the capers of the characters sometimes quite comic with Julian gradually falling for Claire even when convinced she is has amnesia and is delusional. The idea of how a Regency man catapulted to modern America might react the world around him made also made for some amusing scenes.

Of course, there are some serious parts to the story as well, especially towards the end- including a car chase or two. Yet it all comes over as a thrilling and rollicking good read. I was quite impressed with the variety of writers from which the verses at the beginning of each chapter came as well. From a Norse Saga to G.K. Chesterton and Shakespeare.

Only a couple of things slightly niggled me. One was the reference to people in Regency England eating in the American manner with only forks, and the other was a character being referred to as Miss Margaret.
I can understand her being referred to as such, along with her surname as a first formal greeting, but not continually in conversation. Wouldn't she just be called 'Margaret', or Miss- followed by her surname?

All in all though, I would recommend this for people looking for a fun, quick read. Though I would suggest its not really suitable for younger teens due to some romantic content and sex references, though not actual sex scenes.

Borrowed from Kindle Unlimited and I might well buy it sometime to read again.

My review for Forever, Latley: A Regency Time Travel Romance.
I thoroughly enjoyed reading Forever, Lately: A Regency Time Travel Romance, by Linore Rose Burkard, a historical, “regency” romance where Clair Jennings, a writer, finds herself traveling back and forth between London in 1816 and present day. Burkard does an excellent job of keeping the reader on track of where and when the main character finds herself. Clair Jennings is faced with difficult decisions. The protagonist plays out well, keeping us on the edge of our seat. I found myself gasping midway through the book and speaking out loud by the shock of what I had just read.
Burkhard does an excellent job at pulling the reader into her story while tugging on their emotions. I love a good clean time travel book and surprisingly found myself reading historical fiction for the first time. I was intrigued at the language written in the story, making the time period believable. The quotes starting out each chapter are right on target. The cover could have been more appealing but did not stop from reading the book. I did feel the intensity on the second half did slow down just a bit. Overall, I highly recommend Forever, Lately: A Regency Time Travel Romance, by Linore Rose Burkard.

It gets better after a while, keep reading!

I almost didn't finish this book, but I'm glad I did! Usually, if I don't enjoy the first few chapters, I either don't finish or (if I've committed to reviewing it, like this one), I usually never recover from the bad first impression and dislike the book entirely. However, this one ended up pleasantly surprising me. After the first quarter of the book, I began to get more and more interested. I think you'll be happy if you keep reading.

The pacing was great after the first quarter and really kept me enthralled. I read it all in one afternoon. By chapter 42, just a little over halfway, I had to know what was going to happen and kept thinking about it even during interruptions.

I enjoyed the characters except for Adam and Clarissa. I felt they were too one-dimensional and therefore not believable. I liked and related to Claire and Julian St. John, even Miss Margaret and Lady Ashworth.

I enjoyed the faith thread but wished for much more. And I was really confused about how the “magical scarf” fit into the Christian theme. The mechanism for the time travel was really unbelievable—don't expect any science. In that respect, it was a little like the “Time Traveler's Wife” or the Christopher Reeve movie “Somewhere in Time,” neither of which I liked.

But overall, I think I will probably read it again, which means it's good enough to recommend.
(I received this book for free. The decision to write a review, as well as the opinions expressed in it, are all my own. I was not compensated for this review.)

Forever, Lately, by Linore Rose Burkard, is a Regency Time Travel romance novel. This is a fun book to read to just take you away for a while. Away to England in 1816 and back to present day Maine, all in one sitting.
After her grandmother disappeared, Claire decided to go to her grandmother's cottage to try to revive her writing career. When she put a shawl over her shoulders she s taken back to England in 1816. She met St. John, the main character in her book. Using the shawl, she was able to travel between England and Maine.
St. John, a reformed man, is being pursued by Clarissa. She will do anything to get him. When Claire is made aware of possible danger to him, she does everything she can to help keep him safe.
I have never read any other books by this author and was not expecting the story to develop the way it did. Once I got into the book, I found it very hard to put down. I enjoyed reading how the two struggled with being in different times, with the way they dressed and talked. I would not really consider this a Christian story, since there is very little Christian influence in the story other than St. John being reformed and Claire finding her grandmother's prayer shawl.
I received a copy of this book from the author and publisher through Book Crash blogging program. This is my honest review.

‘There are people who think that things that happen in fiction do not really happen.
They are wrong.’ - Neil Gaiman

Claire Channing is an aspiring author that loves to write about Regency England. So naturally the manuscript she is working on is set in 1816. This book is going to be the one that makes her famous! Living in her missing grandmother’s cottage, she has found the perfect place to research, dream and pen the novel that would reach the top of the charts. That is until something totally unexpected happens.

Imagine how easy research would be if you could just transport yourself into that time period. The author has given us incredible detail of the gowns, the setting and even the food. One has to wonder if time travel is part of her life... What a fun book to read! I found myself on the edge of my seat, cheering them on, believing in the perfect ending.

I received this ARC through CelebrateLit. The five star rating was in no way solicited and all impressions and opinions are my own.

Fun and lighthearted!
Forever, Lately tells the story of Claire a Regency Romance writer who gets involved in the lives of her characters or so she thinks. She goes back to 1816 in an unexpected way to only find more surprises that may change her life.
It's the first time I've read a time-traveling novel and let me tell you this was a fun, easy-to-read and lighthearted story. The main characters, Claire and Julian St. John, are amusing and sometimes even relatable. Their romance is sweet and honest but a bit too modern for a regency for me. Nonetheless, I enjoyed it.
I really liked the way Burkard cared for details, which are crucial in a time-traveling novel. She shows you the picture so clearly, that it feels like you're watching a movie!
The plot is interesting and even though sometimes it feels as predictable, it has some fun and unexpected twists that engage you to keep reading.
If you are into regency romances books, this has to be in your library. You're going to enjoy it!

Claire is an author with one good book published, and two missing some magic. She decides to travel to some place in Maine, her grandmothers cottage, Her grandmother had just up and vanished. Claire knew hat her mother had been embarrassed by the way she lived, and the fact she could not care less over people ,she would never see again. She finds a pretty shawl and wraps up to keep warm, and arrives at the theater in 1812. The play ends but she has no place to go, and that leads her to Julian St Johns house, when a woman walks in demanding she is her Grandaughter. There was also a clingy, spoiled young woman named Clarissa, who is a total brat. The story has more characters, and if you hang on to you finish this plus sized book ,it all makes sense .There are trips back in forth to the point of craziness, a evil man, and a few misguided ones. It dragged in places going over speech, dress, hair, and proper table service. I gave it a 4. Really a 3.5 rounded off. There were parts that I just loved, and some funny. Others ludicrous. .A good editor would have helped so much.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I have read a few time travel stories, but never one set during the Regency Era. I thought this was a very creative and original idea. I think I have a crush on the hero Julian St. John. He is a man of true character and integrity. “Despite her confusion, she notices St. John’s waistcoat wasn’t scarlet and silver threaded as she’d written it, but black with gold thread, visible beneath a lovely white cravat and the lapels of a twin-tailed topcoat. He wore beautifully fitted trousers, and-. Suddenly he squinted toward her. Their eyes locked, sending an electric current through her whole body. She was caught in his gaze like an embrace, captured by eyes that were curious, yet almost forbidding. He was seeing her!” This is a sweet romance with just a little kissing in it. I hope Burkard writes more time travel romances.
