The Happy Buddha explores why compassion is the very essence of mindfulness and how we can connect with this loving quality through the transformational practice of meditation. Through personal and philosophical reflections, practical teachings, and enlightening insights into loving-kindness, joy, happiness, and contentment, he draws upon Buddhism, psychotherapy, and focusing (a way of listening to our intuitive wisdom) to reveal compassion as the key to true wellbeing for ourselves and each other.
A book that everyone could benefit from reading. Highly recommend! Such a grounded and authentic guide on mindfulness and it's power to transform us internally and externally.
I started reading this during a difficult time in my life. It allowed me to face my problems head on instead of avoiding them. It was very calming, and I would go to it in times of anxiety. I hope our friendship is not over.
Really enjoyed the book. It’s an easy read, just 120 something pages. Gave me great nuggets of wisdom on meditations and the use of analogy make it easy to grasp the concept the author is talking about. Will definitely be a book I’ll pick back up from my shelves to read again here and there.
Its a lovely book, even the pages feel delicate. There are exercises and quotes highlighted throughout and its easy to skim through, its not a big 'tome' or bogged down with complicated terminology.
Easy read, I need to buy myself a copy of this book to work through the exercises. I like the approach of not judging or rejecting negative emotion, curiousity and acceptance of feelings is a more compassionate approach.
i always thought of meditation as a way of self improvement for the future rather than a way to connect with the present (what this book discusses), so this was an interesting reframing of that. had to read this for my job but not mad about it
Read this for work but loved it :) Never really read much about mindfulness, but it was easy to follow how applicable it is to our lives. the way we see the world is how we experience it.
“We lean towards what we want, whether it’s wanting things or wanting to be different. When we are caught up in wanting, we are not centred and we lose our balance”
Reaching inner peace require balance. In fact, everything in life is created in balance. Therefore we are responsible for our own happiness and contentment because most of the time we are unhappy as a result of our attitude towards problems and life. I love how this book includes practical tips for meditation though I’m not focusing on that. I find it interesting and helpful especially when paired with the compassion topic. Self love is definitely important and there are things we do to ourselves that’s hurtful and should stop. Love my read on mindfulness with this book. Just that its too brief.
I’ve recently started to incorporate mindfulness into my daily life but had not previously done much reading on the subject and wondered where to start but this book was the perfect introduction into many aspects of mindfulness.
The short chapters mean that it’s easy to dip in and out of and I also found the quick ‘exercises’ and highlighted quotes extremely useful to takeaway and incorporate into my practise.
I really loved how this book is written: easy to understand, with examples to help you visualize more complex topics, and full of exercises and tips on mediation.
There are definitely many things to take from this book but for me the greatest lesson was how important it is to treat yourself with kindness and compassion at all times.
