All Mixed Up #3

Mixed Emotions

Rate this book
Two truths. One lie. Only their hearts are off limits.

Truth: Zora Monroe could rule the world from her phone, while cooking up a five-star meal.

Truth: Between landing an agent for her cookbook and construction on her new house nearing completion, barely into her thirties, she’s winning at the game of life.

Lie: She is NOT in love with her brother’s best friend and lawyer, Michael Kennedy.

At least that’s the story she’s been sticking with since she was nine.

When her brother’s house where she’s been crashing needs fumigation and repairs, she suddenly finds herself forced into the one place she can’t sweep the lie under the rug: Mike’s house. In such close proximity, their attraction is deliberate, forbidden, and indisputable. Torn between dreams and the reality of what’s been lost and found over time, she must decide whether the only man she’s ever loved—the one she should protect her heart from—is actually the man for her.

I liked the romance in this one better because they were already friends and had previous romantic experience with each other.

And I also really liked their game of 2 truths 1 lie!

I voluntarily reviewed a free advanced reading copy of this book provided by the author. The opinions expressed are all my own.

It was an okay story for me. We have two people who have known each other for many years and have really liked each other for all of them.
It’s not until their friends intervened that they finally got together. What their friends did took a lot of ingenuity.
I really liked Mike. He was a very like able character, Zora not that much in my eyes. She was a little too insecure about herself and her feelings towards Mike. He was very sweet with her and she seemed to constantly question herself about his true feelings towards her. *sigh*

This is part of a series but can be read as a stand-alone.

I was excited to be given the opportunity to read an ARC of this book. I was unfamiliar with the authors previous work but after reading this book, I’ll make sure to read her other works. I didn’t know that this was part of a series so I will definitely go back and read the beginning of the series. With all that being said, I enjoyed this book. There was a love triangle element and friends to lover troupe which I always enjoy when reading romance or chick-lit. I felt like this book had tastefully done love scenes, just enough tension between “friends”, humor, drama and all the things that we love when reading romance. I enjoyed reading about Zora and Mike.

I received this book from bookfunnel in return of an honest review.

Zora has everything going for her, a cookbook about to be published, construction on her new house almost complete and she's barely thirty. While her house is under construction, she's crashing at her brother's house. She's also denying the feelings she's had for years for her brother's best friend. What happens when she and her brother end up having to stay at his best friend's house and their friends realize they each have feelings for each other and try to set them up? Will they admit to each other their true feelings? Will they get a HEA?

A good story line and well developed characters.

I just wrapped up Mixed Emotions and Heintzelman officially has a new fan! This was the perfect mix of spicy, sweet, and a little bit of heat! Zora and Mike both are such likable characters and I love the friendship embedded deep into their relationship. I was drawn in from the beginning, with this being the easy-going, jovial read I needed this week. I’m a sucker for a friends-to-lovers romance and this hit the spot!

Mixed Emotions is the latest from author Mia Heintzelman in her All Mixed Up series. Because Heinzelman is a new-to-me author, I was unaware that was part of the series, but the book was written in such a way that it could work as a standalone and I was particularly grateful for that. Mixed Emotions follows Zora and her struggle to embrace her feeling for her brother's best friend, Mike, while trying to get her cookbook published.

Plot line: I liked the overall story. I thought it was pretty realistic: childhood friends falling in love years down the road. There was a decent and steady build up as we watch Zora and Mike (mostly Zora though) get their shit together and become an official couple. Personally, I didn't particularly care for the meddling friends thing. Nothing against the author, but something about that trope irks me. I read another book by a different author that did the same thing and I didn't care for it there either.

Zora: Oh, Zora. I could take or leave her, to be honest. She was way too dramatic for my liking. She had a tendency to go out of her way to try to destroy the budding relationship she had with Mike. She was really insecure when it came to Mike's ex even though, he gave absolutely no reason to be so. Then there were unnecessary breakdowns over rather trivial matters that could've easily been solved had she just opened her mouth and asked. Zora is not even my real friend (or a real person for that matter) and I was exhausted by her.

Mike: I thought he was a decent leads. He's not one of my favorite lead males, but I liked him well enough. I may have to chalk it up to them knowing each other for so long, but I honestly don't see what he loves about Zora or why he loves her so much. But then again, considering some of the romantic things he did for her, I guess they bonded over their mutual flair for the dramatic.

Overall: A fun read with a solid plot and romance. Cute couple with a rather annoying leading lady who needs some Prozac. 3.5 stars.

This was definitely more of a 3 1/2, but I didn't love it enough to round up.

Overall I liked it. This book was cute, it moved quickly, but it wasn't necessarily my favorite. It had a solid plot, some great side characters, and I loved the dog, 100%.

Mike was okay and a pretty decent lead, but I just couldn't connect with Zora. I'm not sure if it was her personality, or the fact that her inner monologue was a little too insecure, but she just wasn't my favorite. I also struggled with identifying what Mike loved about Zora. Maybe it was because they knew each other for so long that it was almost ingrained in him, but I honestly thought he could do better (oops).

I also really appreciate that this book, while part of a series, was written in a way that I didn't feel like I missed anything with this being my first Mia Heintzelman.

Long story short, I chuckled, it was a quick read, and I did enjoy some of it, as well as some of the supporting characters, but I just don't see this one being memorable for me.

Received an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

The book was okay. It’s about two friend who hid their feelings for each other until eventually their friends do something about. The lead Zora wasn’t that likable to me. I found her to be a little annoying. Mike was sweet and I enjoyed reading his parts.

Overall it was a quick and decent read.

Full of emotions

This book made me laugh, tear up get mad etc. Mike an Zo we’re definitely all over the place. It has the right amount of heat as well. All the entanglements from beginning to end make this a wonderfully written book

I would suggest reading the book as I was listening to it on audio while working and I think for me it had a lot to do with the narrator. She mispronounced words quite often unfortunately which made me focus on her more than the story

Something about Zora doesn’t sit right with me. She doesn’t feel like a very fleshed out and is annoying. Michael is hot but he looks like my crush according to the description so I’m biased. Overall, the story is boring and all the characters are basic. I’m also not convinced that Zora is an actual chef. Again, the characters need to be more rounded flushed out and given a full development. Everybody’s too basic in this story.

This story was just meh to me. It took Zoe and Mike was to long to final became a couple. They circled and denied their feeling for almost have the book.
The book should have ended there for me. Once they were together done. Happy ending.

Wasn't favorite.. I'm not a fan of friends to lovers where they deny each other for so long..
