Not a novel, in the strictest sense of the word, but an utterly fascinating cross sectioning of a bayou community in the Gulf section of Louisiana. The whole passing show takes place between morning and night of the wedding of the energetic Madame Toussaint, who tries her best to play up to the sensibilities of her female neighbors by staying at home on her wedding day, rather than going out with the fishing fleet as usual. Humorous, original, and a wholly untouched bit of Americana.
