Reckless Envy by Joss Wood is a romance novel that, from the very first pages, draws on one of my favorite tropes: forbidden love. The story of Matt Velez and Emily Arnott shows how thin the line can be between desire, loyalty, and... jealousy.
Matt Velez is a character who, at first glance, has it all: money, influence, and success with women. However, his confidence begins to waver when Emily, a woman he shouldn't desire, crosses his path. The problem is that Emily is engaged to his biggest rival. This starting point creates tension that drives the whole story. The author builds the emotional conflict between the characters very well: Matt has to face not only jealousy and rivalry, but also the question of whether it is worth fighting for a woman who formally belongs to someone else.
Emily, in turn, is not just a “nice girl,” as it might seem at first. As the plot develops, we get to know her more complex side—her doubts, secrets, and reasons for finding herself in this situation. This makes the relationship between the characters more believable and engaging.
The greatest strength of the book is the chemistry between the main characters. The dialogues are full of tension and understatement, and the scenes between Matt and Emily can be both romantic and emotionally intense. The rivalry plot adds dynamism to the story and makes the reader want to find out how this dangerous game of emotions will end.
Reckless Envy is the perfect choice for fans of romances full of tension, jealousy, and forbidden feelings. If you like stories about love that comes at the least appropriate moment, you will definitely enjoy this book.
