Born to wield the four elements, I'm destined to marry one of Drakenon's four princes. I'll be the next dragon queen, locked safely away in the castle. I'll give the royal family more dragon shifter children with elemental magic to keep our kingdom strong. And I'll keep my mouth shut about the injustice of it all. At least, that's what I've been told time and again.
But I want to fly––to do something meaningful with my magic––like defeat our warlock enemies. I want to choose my own fate, my own love, my own LIFE.
And I'll defy anyone who says I can't.
Ashes Fall is a standalone/optional prequel novella to the wildly popular Dragon Blessed Trilogy by USA Today Bestselling author Nina Walker. Taking place a few years before Crown of Dragons, jump into Khali Elliot's fantasy world of powerful dragon shifters, deadly warlocks, and forbidden romance.
I received a copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.
I’m a big fan of this series, and I was excited to read this little novella giving us a glimpse into the world of Khali and the four princes.
Even in this book, I still think I love all the princes equally, except Silas. I still have some bad blood for Silas, and that most definitely won’t change any time soon.
This was a short and easy read, with some fun moments, and an intriguing storyline. It matches the rest of the series well.
The only thing that I was disappointed about was that it wasn’t longer. I felt like it was just a bit rushed, and I would have loved to see a little bit more of this time, getting to know Khali before she became the character I know now after reading book 2.
Nina Walker has done it again and that friends is a good thing . She is one hell of an author that if you haven't read her books I'm sorry but you are missing out . Ashes Fall is simply fantastic . From the first page till the last one you hate to put this book down and you probably will not until you turn the last page and you are like WoW I loved this book . The main character is easy to root for Nina did an excellent job as a writer to get the reader vested in her early in the story and you have to know what's going to happen good or bad by decisions she makes . The world building is excellent and makes you feel like you are there . So all in all as I said this story is simply fantastic . So do yourself a favor and pick this up then sit back enjoy a fantastic story , go buy book 1&2 of the series you know you want to lol the come back here and leave a review only takes a few minutes and you might be the reason someone else buys this and loves it .
Love it!!! 🤩 Love to get to know the real Khali as, to be honest, I didn't like her at all when I read book 1 & 2 of this series, she seems so full of herself, looking down to others, but now that I read about her upbringing, her dreams, her feelings, it all makes sense, and now I want her to suceed, to make her dreams come true 🤗💕... Of course they are not the same anymore, so much has happened and she has grown up but, one thing remains, her people wellbeing, she will always fight to protect her people!!!... Can't wait for the final book!!! 😍❤️
First of all, the cover for this book is gorgeous. This is what immediately captured my interest, and for once, I'm glad I have a habit of picking books based on their covers. This was a very quick read, even quicker because I couldn't stop reading it. From the very first page, it held my attention; there wasn't a single part that I found boring. The characters were wonderfully written, and the world-building was phenomenal. The entire idea behind the characters and the history was extremely interesting, and the way it was explained was clear. I'll definitely be looking into more of Nina Walker's works soon.
I was provided with a complimentary copy of this book so I could give an honest review.
Update: 1/16/22: I felt weird about me leaving it stopped at the halfway point so I skimmed through the last few chapters and got the gist of them and the story😂 My review below still stands. There's a chance I might come back to it and finish it for real but for now, this is where the journey ends. The original trilogy, which I highly recommend you read, had two POV's and I must not be a fan of Khali's😅
Stopped at 47%
It's not bad, I'm just not in the mood for it right now😅. Also, it doesn't really seem to add much to the series besides fill in the events Pre-Crown of Dragons. However, it does let you get to know Kahli better since that wasn't really seen in the main trilogy.
It's also been two or three years since I finished the trilogy so that could be why I'm struggling a little.
Why? It was a fresh breath I hadn’t expected. Based on the blurb I got from the author I thought I’d know what and when will something happen and where in the book. I couldn’t be more wrong. But let’s start the review.
The book is about a girl named Khali, she’s a gifted dragon with 4 main elements flowing through her, which is super rare. She’s supposed to marry one of the dragon princes and bring as many kids into their kingdom as possible. Of course our Khali doesn’t like that. She wants to show the king, queens, princes and the whole kingdom that she’s worth so much more! Will she be able to prove them or will they stop her?
The most interesting thing I found was not being able to know what was going to happen before it happened. Since I read a lot of books (as probably all of us have) I find it easier and easier to pinpoint when something will go south. For this book I didn’t expect it or the other just did the writing so excellently that I just wasn’t watching out for it. At the beginning of the book I didn’t know what I was getting myself into, so I kind of had to push myself to read it, but I’m so glad I did! Through the middle of it I noticed myself being more and more pulled towards the book in an amazing and I couldn’t wait as to what would happen.
The most I liked the story (of course), but also the way Khali was “built” as well as the characters around her and the whole kingdom. Each character was different and awesome.

I didn't read the other books in the series, so I only knew about this book's story. It was a very pleasant surprise!
I really loved the theme of this book - magic, dragons, love, kingdom - these are my keywords for a good book for me. Also, I love the cover, that was the first reason I'd like to read it.
The story follows a girl, Khali. She is a perfect character (I think), she makes mistakes, but she is loyal and kind and also determined, she knows what she wants for her life. I like the princes too, I knew he is mysterious, brave, handsome. But I also like Owen (I'm so curious about the first book in the series! :D). Bram is an interesting character too (one red point for the reading boy! ♥)
The story was unique and new for me (I haven't read any books with dragons and I really loved the magic system too), it was so exciting! There were some places, where I didn't put it down, because I had to know what will happen! :D It was a shorter story, but I think it was long enough to fall in love with the world, the characters and the story and you'd love to continue the series!
So much thank for the author! I definitely check the other books in the series out! *.*
I actually really liked getting to see Khali in a different light. It was nice seeing her wanting more for herself--the freedom to shift and use her elements, to feel useful, to be herself. It was also enlightening to see how the guys acted around her before we're introduced to them in book 1. And how the events that take place in this prequel are what lead up to Dean being banished, and Owen's relationship with Khali being more...real. It's nice to know that King Titus is actually an even bigger jerk than what I had originally thought. Overall, I liked getting this insight into Khali and the princes and the events that lead us into book 1. There was so much more going on behind the scenes, and my heart completely broke for Khali. Especially, towards the end. In all honesty, this prequel made me love Owen a bit more and gave me more respect for Khali and all she's achieved and fought for in the last two books!
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
Khali is a elemental dragon, everyone has her life mapped out for her. She doesn't just want to be the next queen. She wants to be able to fight, use her gift. The King doesn't see it that way, she is to stop her behavior. She will have to spend time with the king's children until she is of age, then he will choose. Khali devises a plan to will have her get into a tournament that will allow the winner to join the army. She will win in her mind, as they can't take it back. Everything was going well until a horrible moment, that is when everything went crashing down.
This was a nice introduction to the characters, I am looking forward to the rest of the series. To see what happens next to the characters. It is an unique story that will get better with each book as it expands this world.
I received an ARC copy of this book and this my honest review
After reading this book, I wanted to write and post this review to share my honest experiences toward the story. Ashes Fall is a novella that takes place prior to the events that took place in Crown of Dragons, and focuses on Khali’s experience growing up as a princess. It was an amazing backstory and also set some events that are taking place in the main series to light. With such a quick read, it was remarkably well written and so engaging, it was difficult to pull away from it and return to reality. With this being said, overall, this series is completely amazing and I cannot wait to see how it continues!
Awesome book, I really enjoyed getting to know more about Khali and why she chose to do some of the things she does in future books. It was a wonderful experience to get to know learn more about each of the four brothers. I was glad to get some insight into Dean and his choice to kiss her when it is forbidden. The description of their land helps build in the story we get in future books. I really enjoyed the characters and the adventures they experienced along the way. You should definitely read this book!
Really enjoyed this novella, Nina Walker is a new author to me I was impressed by this book and will definitely pick up the first in the series.
So if you like dragon shifters, princes and a feisty heroine with some intrigue thrown in this could be the series for you. I hope it keeps up the great story telling and character building.
I received an ARC. This is my honest opinion. Khali is dragon blessed, but has zero control over her life. Destined to be the next queen to breed the future generation of dragon blessed, she rebels at every turn. She has amazing powers, but she’s stifled at every turn. This series has plenty of action & a wicked cliff hanger that will have you craving more.
This was such a good story. Normally I'm not very big on novellas because they're too short for my taste and they also have a character that I don't particularly care for.
In this case I was glad to be able to get a little bit more of Khali's backstory and now that I know, everything makes more sense to me now.
Love, love, love these characters. Although you don’t need this novella to read the series, it just gives you more time with these characters and a bit more back story. And the writing and story are always good.
What a great look into the past and how Khali was brought up, how the kiss between Dean and her happened and a bit more information about the how things came to be! Great series!
This book is the first one I've read by this Nina Walker, and I am impressed with the introduction I got to this author. Ashes Fall features a main female character who's not a damsel in distress and takes her life into her own hands, and that is amazing. And don't get me started on the gorgeous cover. I just wish it was longer. I'm looking forward to reading more books by this author.
