Cursed by witches centuries ago, Remy Roax was content with living his long life as a half-man/half-fox. But when he learned he had had undiscovered powers, he had no choice but to learn how to use them.
After relocating to North Dakota in order to practise his new found abilities, he soon finds himself in the targets of Louis Bonne, a man who wants to understand how the curse placed on Remy worked, so that he can use the souls of innocent people to make himself immortal.
Since Remy has no interest in helping, Louis sends a group of murderers intent on convincing him. But Remy isn’t some helpless bystander, and these people will soon discover that Remy isn’t the kind of fox who runs from a hunt.
Hunted is a novella set in the universe of the bestselling Hellequin Chronicles and Avalon Chronicles series.
Hunted: An Avalon Novella (The Avalon Chronicles #3.5) by Steve McHugh This story is about Remy in the Avalon series. Remy is my favorite character in the both series so I was excited when I saw this! Remy is half fox and half man but was in human form most of this book. A witch is trying to use a spell to be immortal. He comes looking for Remy's blood. Great characters, love the witty dialogue, and learning more about Remy's past.
For fans of the series, Hunted as suggested in the title of the review is a perfect way to whet your appetite before Rebellion Chronicles on November 21st
The story had me laugh out loud a couple of times, much to the amusement and weird looks from a number of people on the bus, and for long time fans, first time review readers, I couldn't recommend enough.
For those who have never experienced the sheer skull f****ry in Steve's books, get yourself crimes against magic the first in the series, buckle up and prepare for a crazy ride.
I’m really glad that Steve wrote this. It filled in some gaps between Scorched Shadows and Avalon for Remys character development. It also gave us the fun, angry, foul mouthed character we love. Great story and ready for Remy to get his buddy back in Nov.
Remy is a fantastic character, one of the best in any book and definitely deserves a whole series of his own. Although this is a Novella it feels much longer somehow and the story line is fantastic...
As much as I love many of the characters in Steve McHugh's Hellequin and Avalon series, Remy Roax, the fox/man hybrid is my favourite and I know I'm not alone in that. I was really looking forward to this three-foot furry hero taking centre-stage so was surprised to discover him living as a human in the opening scenes of the book but soon understood why he is hiding away in North Dakota and being trained by Wei. It's here that I feel I should point out that although Hunted can easily be enjoyed as a standalone and there is enough back story included for newcomers to understand the important points about Remy's past, there will undoubtedly be parts of the book which will resonate more with readers already familiar with the character and the world he lives in. Remy as a human has been living a debauched lifestyle but it's clear that his excesses are a way of trying to forget - much to Wei's concern. Wei is a huli jing - a nine-failed fox - and like Remy can turn herself from human to fox. However, she doesn't have the same ability to heal herself while in her human state. Remy is almost impervious to harm in his human form and Wei is keen to learn the limits of his power. Being pushed off a four-hundred foot cliff would be fatal to most people but although it's incredibly painful for Remy, he is able to recover quickly - which is just as well because it turns out that there are worse things than being thrown off a cliff and very soon he finds himself in terrible danger. The humans who confront him in a bar are easily dealt with in a scene which really captures the essence of who he is. He may be foul-mouthed, promiscuous and rude but he is not amoral and his strong principles are part of what make him so endearing. The arrival of two witches is far more concerning, however. Remy doesn't have much time for them at first, which is understandable given that it was a coven of witches who turned him into a fox/man hybrid. Not all witches are evil though and as he hears the reason why Monique and Jamal have come to him, he agrees to help them deal with the sinister Louis Bonne. Although the first part of the story could hardly be accused of lacking in action, it's from here that things really heat up as Remy must face a power-hungry enemy who has very similar healing abilities to his own. How is he going to deal with a foe who has a hundred lives and a coven of witches to do his bidding? Back in his fox form he is hunted by powerful forces and would appear to be alone and vulnerable as Louis is sure that Remy holds the key to his own immortality. The violent action scenes which always feature in Steve McHugh's books are present here too, as Remy is eventually reunited with some old friends who join forces against Louis and his witches. The damage inflicted is truly gruesome but despite the extreme violence, the wisecracking humour and warmth between friends ensures that Hunted never becomes too dark. It's also fascinating to discover more about Remy's origins and to see him begin to come to terms with the past and who he is. Hunted is a fantastic addition to the Hellequin/Avalon canon and has left me even more eager for the upcoming Rebellion Chronicles. Although shorter in length, it is still packed with the fast-paced gripping action, superb character development and clever plotting I've come to expect from Steve McHugh's books. Highly recommend.
When I visited Amazon and saw this one recommended to me - based on my purchasing McHugh's books before -- I couldn't click buy fast enough. It's a NOVELLA featuring REMY! Remy, the fox-man, friend of Nate Garrett from the The Hellequin Chronicles! Of course I need to read this.
The timeline is set after everyone died. Remy Roax has been learning about his new found superpower (after he found out he could become human) with Chao Wei a huli jiing (or a nine-tailed fox) -- and then got involved when evil witch was trying to learn about Remy's powers.
It's Remy... so it has ALL THE FUN that I miss from reading him in the other series. He still has his mouth running his life *lol* although Remy also probably enjoy spreading his seeds after being able to become human again. Anyway, a lot of victims too but in the end Remy prevailed. A very good novella before we return to in Sorcery Reborn
Finally a story about one of the most interesting and complex characters in the Avalon universe. This story not only added depth to our favorite dirty mouthed fox, but it tied together, for me at least, strings that had been dangling. I throughly enjoyed the interaction between Wei and Remy and can't help but to think that their story in incomplete. Maybe someday. It also helped tie together A Flicker of Steel. Another McHugh masterpiece
Remy is by far one of Steve's best characters. It was great to view the world from his perspective. Steve im waiting for the full length Remy story now.
I was grateful to see three new novellas available on Audible this week and I got all three. They were perfect bite size stories that gave us a look into the Avalon world that we have come to know and love.
This one was focused on Remy - and honestly, right there was reason enough to listen to this. I mean, who doesn't love a pint sized foul mouthed half-fox half-man who is constantly throwing out snark filled diatribes? Seriously?
This novella was set in the time frame before the latest Avalon book. Nate is still MIA and it is heart breaking to see how much he is missed by Remy. I have to admit, I'm not sure WHY Remy is a human in the beginning of this book (I listened to this on Audible and rewound to see if I missed the explanation) but apparently Remy is human for a month and using that time to drink and screw his way through North Dakota. Then, as usual, trouble seems to come calling and then we get to see Remy in action. There are cameos from some of our other favorite friends so all in all, just a great treat. I wish there were more of these novellas because I enjoyed every one of them.
I made the mistake of reading this AFTER the last novel....and as such, my review is biased by the fact that in reading this book, I am haunted by the feeling that I've READ it before in other books in this series (spoilers for this and the newest NOVEL)
Entire community where the hero is hiding out attacked and all but destroyed - check Villain who is looking for something that the hero or someone close to him is hiding - check
I wanted to like this because Remy is a great character... in the main novels... in this novella, he's just another version of Nate.
Mordred is back... so there is that....
Sadly, I can't recommend this novella.

I really enjoyed this novella that focused on one of my favorite characters in the Hellequin Chronicles series, Remy the fox/human hybrid with multiple lives. This story explained more about how he came to be a fox, what some of his powers are, and the secrets that have followed him since he somehow escaped death and took the souls of a dozen witches by accident. Overall it was kind of a sad novella, so much fighting and the death of innocents, with a few lighthearted moments, lots of swearing, and humor sprinkled in.
An afternoon's read. If you're a fan of Steve McHugh's Avalon/Nate Garrett/Hellequin series (and a particular fan of Remy the fox man), then you'll find the afternoon it takes to read this novella a worthwhile commitment.
It is, at times, a bit neat, a bit convenient. But if you need a dose of McHugh between novels, this will tide you over.
Hunted is a short side-story that centers on Remy, the fox-man. I happen to like this character quite a bit, so I felt that this was well worth reading. This isn't an introduction to the Avalon Chronicles, so don't start this novella without reading some or all of the main books previously published.
Readers of this series who like Mordred will be delighted that he shows up during the second half of the story.
Cute story about Remy battling witches, and the whole crew came to help Mordred, Diana, Sky this happened when the crew was all morning Nate. It ended that the sister lost her brother but she went back to France and Mordred got her a Passport and money for her journey. The story provided background on how Remy became cursed.
This book has a lot of good reviews, but regrettably I never really got into it. Plot-based, fast-paced, with shapeshifters, sorcerers, and modern weapons. And an interesting premise. Unfortunately the character development felt thin (probably the result of this being a novella), and I never really felt invested in the main character.
Good, in that it was a quick read, but not a story I loved.
One of the more interesting characters of the Hellequin series and its spinoffs, Remy Roax gets his own novella here, and it was a read worthy of the rest of the books in the McHugh-verse. Recommended for fans.
Another great read in this series of stories. Once you start you have to finish, not a lot else is done. Loving this character as well as all the rest in the helliquin and resurrection books. Thank you.
What the world needs is more Remi. i don't care what we have to do to get it, even if steve has to license Remi out to other fantasy franchises (HAH! So Remi the Foxman and Oberon the Irish Wolfhound walk into a Sausage Bar and the rest of the joke writes itself)
Remy must be the best character of this series. Steve gives us Remy for a entire novella and I can't get enough. Remy don't give a crap attitude in this novella is refreshing and funny.
The Hellequin Chronicles series has many fantastic characters, and I would love to read stories featuring each one, but besides the MC, Nate, Remy is the most interesting and the most fun to read. This one was excellent! I would like to get more Remy stories.
Remy is one of the best and memorable characters from the Hellequin/Avalon series. This was a quick, fun read with Remy at the ready to tick everyone of with his dark humor even in the midst of horrendous loss and as he learns of his new powers.
I think I'm just disappointed that only one of the bad guys got what he deserved after that town. And the story didn't delve as much into Remy's background as I'd hoped.
Usually stories with/about magic aren't ones I enjoy. This one was pretty darn good...funny too. All the characters blended in adding action and enough blood (some gore) to keep the reader engaged. Definitely recommend 👌
