Silas has done many horrible things as a demon without apology or regret. He has his reasons for creating his granddaughter and putting her in harm’s way. But what are those reasons? Why did he become a demon? Why did he manipulate the Crane and Dubois bloodlines to create Mattie Hathaway to take on Deleriel, a Fallen Angel? Silas’s past has been kept closely guarded, his intentions his own. But now those secrets are threatened, his past about to be laid bare to the only two people he cares about. Will it cost him everything when they discover the real reason he created his granddaughter, or will they understand?
So who am I? Well, I'm the crazy girl with an imagination that never shuts up. I LOVE scary movies. My friends laugh at me when I scare myself watching them and tell me to stop watching them, but who doesn't love to get scared? I grew up in a small town nestled in the southern mountains of West Virginia where I spent days roaming around in the woods, climbing trees, and causing general mayhem. Nights I would stay up reading Nancy Drew by flashlight under the covers until my parents yelled at me to go to sleep.
Growing up in a small town, I learned a lot of values and morals, I also learned parents have spies everywhere and there's always someone to tell your mama on you. So when you get grounded, what is there left to do? Read! My Aunt Jo gave me my first real romance novel. It was a romance titled "Lord Margrave's Deception." I remember it fondly. But I also learned I had a deep and abiding love of mysteries and anything paranormal. As I grew up, I started to write just that and would entertain my friends with stories featuring them as main characters.
Now, I live Huntersville, NC where I entertain my family and watch the cats get teased by the birds and laugh myself silly when they swoop down and then dive back up just out of reach. The cats start yelling something fierce...lol.
I love books, I love writing books, and I love entertaining people with my silly stories.
Silas has officially wormed his way in. I thought I liked him before, aside of course from the time he filet Mattie's cheek at one time, (apologies I still have PTSD about that) and now I understand him and love him so much more. This book takes place I think a year after the end of book 5, both Benny and Mattie continue to visit Silas in Hell and he's also helping them train their hellhounds. I love that he's grown close to Benny and the little guy calls him Uncle Silas. Silas has a trapped soul, suffering in the worst kind of agony. Mattie senses the soul and while part of her wants to rescue and save the soul she asks Silas for the truth. I never saw what happened coming. Poor Silas is all I have to say. This book has me so ready for the next series.
**The author makes so many Supernatural (the show) references in this series, while there are none here in this book, it's hard to differentiate Silas from Crowley. And after this book I doubt I'll ever be able to separate them again. Fans of the show I think will really enjoy this series especially this insight into Silas.**
OMG Apryl did it again. For such a short book this was brilliant. A very fitting end to the series. The story of the man that started the cycle. Silas was just fantastic and I love how his turned in the end. Mattie is right. the past doesn't matter it's who you are now that does.
Disclaimer time - this is my first introduction to the Ghost Files universe and the character of Silas. Yes, I realize I may be a little late to the party, but it didn't matter. Silas is one of those characters carrying around a lot of hauntingly emotional baggage. This baggage begins to be unpacked in this novella by Ms. Baker as Silas reminisces on events of his past. The story is predominantly told through events of the past and these events are tied back to the present. Ms. Baker was able to provide sufficient detail in this short novella to portray Silas as a demon who has had to make some very difficult decisions when it comes to those closest to him. You can't help but want to read more about him after getting this glimpse into his past.
I couldn't wait to read this book, to be honest. I actually loved the Silas character through out the Ghost Files series. When I had read in one of the books that Silas never made deals with innocence, that he only made deals with those who were already evil... I almost wanted to stop reading the current Ghost Files book, and jump to this book about Silas, so I could find out why, and learn more about him, LOL. It was a little hard to keep reading and wait till I finished the series before reading about Silas. As for this book, it was heartbreaking at some points, and very well done. It explained why Silas became a demon, and as you learn who Silas was pre-demon you easily see where some of his personality quirks as a demon, and even his "goodness" come from if a demon can have goodness in them...Well maybe they don't but from the series we all know Silas did on some level, when it came to Mattie.
Silas has never apologized for the evil things he's done as a demon, nor will he stop doing them. When Mattie and a young boy he has taken a liking to find his secret room, he tells them of his dark past. When all is revealed, will Silas be redeemed or even more of a monster?
This was a great short paranormal tale to finish off the Ghost Files series. Silas has been one of my favorite characters. His mysterious origins have fascinated me, and I was eager to find out how he became a demon and why. I won't spoil anything, but it was very much worth the read!
This book made me love wipes even more. He gives a bad first impression to most, but there's a lot of depth and layers to him that make him very endearing for a demon. This book explains why he did what he did, his motivations and personal story, and definitely worth the read.
The last book in the Ghost files series. I am very pleased that Apryl Baker gave us the story of Silas and his whole intentions of defeating Deleriel. We now know his story and the events that started the chain to the present occasions. Because we don‘t get the explanation during the nobles, I think it is quite important to read this book after all of the others!

It was nice to have a different point of view and to see Silas's side of things and reasoning. Very good series and I can't wait to continue with Mattie's (Emma) story in the Crane Chronicles.
This story was so moving, exciting, entertaining and sad😭😢. After reading this story it helps you to understand Silas a little more. Apryl is a PHENOMENAL storyteller and is an Awesome writer!!.
SILASS 😭😭 I knew I liked you! And for good reason. I wanted to know more about Silas and his role in everything other than just being Mattie’s creator/grandfather and I’m so glad this came out and shed some light on how he became a demon. Sad. But I enjoyed the read
What a back story on Silas! I absolutely love everything about this series. This author weaves a story so complex & twisty you are literally glued to your seat.
I love learning Silas' story. I've always wondered and this answers so much! I knew he was capable of true love...just that he was terribly hurt. Now I know why.
I love Silas's story. Knowing what drove him to be a demon only endeared him to me more. There were glimpses of his soft side in earlier books, not much tho. I love love this series and for anyone who might be thinking about it. Trust me it will be worth it.
The origins of Silas Haversham are finally revealed. Throughout the series we've only known the Demon Silas - the one responsible for creating Mattie/Emma Rose and who has taken many souls over his hundreds of years as a demon.
Mattie wants to know why he has a certain soul bound on his shelf. Silas decides to tell her. We then are transported back to the 1800's when Simon was a kind, happy man married to the love of his life with a 5 year daughter and a son on the way. He didn't believe in the supernatural or that their was true evil out there and it had invaded his house. This was his first introduction to evil fallen angel Deleriel and it tore his family apart in more ways than one.
To avenge the wrong done to his family Silas makes a deal with Deleriel with plans on one day killing him. Which is where the creation of Mattie came in as we know from the previous books. It was nice to get to see Silas as a human before grief and revenge turned him into a demon and it helped you to understand why he was the way he was.
This is the conclusion of the Ghost Files. The loose end that needed tying and I’m glad it ended with Silas. We see him so much, but we’ve never really knew his origin until now. It’s filled with death and despair and why he avenges his family. He loses his family in one fail swoop and it’s life altering and he blames many of things on it including himself but he never realized the evil was under his roof. With the help of his dear friend Benjamin he is introduced to the world of demons and how to fight them sadly though this is one evil you can’t destroy.
I thought I was sad when the Ghost Files ended but we got more of Mattie AKA Emma in the spinoff series about her new life as a Crane. We see Silas in these books as well and he comes off as a mean man, but he still has a soul buried under the muck. I always thought he meant well even if he had a crappy way of showing it. Seriously no ones grandfather should treat them that way but it was all for a reason and if Mattie can forgive so can we. This books does go back to his time and is more of a historical book which I usually shy away from but I really enjoyed it. Now I’m even more ready for the continuation of the Crane Diaries.
Initially I wasn't so sure we needed a Silas origins novella, but Apryl proved me wrong! This was a great book! As always, Apryl's characters have depth and emotion and come alive on the page. This novella gave so much insight into Silas who is such a complicated character. Apryl is so skilled in creating this man we both love and hate at the same time, who is both evil and altruistic at the same time. You're left loving/liking Silas but not being quite comfortable that you do! There's a character in this novella that I'm not a fan of, mostly because I didn't get the reason why the character acted the way the character did. This person could have handled their angst/issue an easier way, but then the story wouldn't be as interesting so I can go with it. If you're a fan of the Ghost Files series and the follow up Craine Diaries series this book is a must read. You could even read this before Ghost Files if you're a stickler on timelines, but it will be a bit before Silas shows up in the series, and I'm not sure if it would add to or detract from the character that is Silas if you knew this info before reading the series? Whatever you decide, don't skip reading this book! If you haven't read The Ghost Files or The Craine Diaries, you need to!
There's been many times I've wondered about Silas's motivations and how he could seem so human while alsobeing a demon through and through.
This book brings the story of Silas as he tells about his life and past to little Benny Malone and Mattie. The very first plot twists are who's soul he keeps in that jar in his torture room and is shortly followed by the fact that at one point Silas was human and how the Malone family is connected to his original one.
Very intense read with multiple surprises and twists. A wonderful conclusion to the Ghost Files and feeds into the Crane Diaries. I can't wait for the next piece in the dual series to see what's next. I do think that though this is book six of ghost files it might chronologically fit after the fourth Crane Diaries but I am not certain.
You know what I love? When an author can write a short story that has deep world building and fantastic characters. Apryl Baker is clearly one of those authors because Silas is so richly full of details, I couldn’t believe it was so short!
What a fantastic plot that kept me engaged. I’ve read a few things by Apryl Baker, but I have not had the opportunity to read anything by her until now. I’m hooked. Her writing is fantastic, her characters are relatable and flawed, and her plot was really well developed.
I recommend checking out Silas! It’s a great, short story.
