Socialist feminist, journalist and activist in the United States.

Waters became involved in Trotskyist politics at a young age, and joined the Socialist Workers Party (SWP) in the 1960s. She became the editor of their youth paper, Young Socialist, and the national secretary of the Young Socialist Alliance.

In the early 1980s, Waters, along with Jack Barnes and others in the SWP leadership, began to reject the label of "Trotskyism" and the theory of Permanent Revolution, in favour of building links with the Cuban Communist Party and Sandinista National Liberation Front.

Today, Waters is the President of the Pathfinder Press and the editor of New International magazine. She has written a number of books on political topics.

Waters is a life-long Socialist activist and president of Pathfinder Press, a
Socialist publishing company. This book is made up of two lectures that she gave
in 2007 and 2009 in Caracas, Venezuela, at its international book fair. There is
additional text by Norton Sandler, an activist and colleague of Waters, and
Olympia Newton, who covered both speeches for the Militant, a Socialist
newspaper based in New York. Inspired by Cuba’s revolutionary past and
persistence, Waters argues that not only can the United States experience a
Socialist revolution but that it may simply be inevitable, given what she views as
the country’s unsustainable growth and the mounting level of discontent among
the working class. Her 2007 speech is occasionally eerily prescient, given the
current economic climate. In addition to addressing economics, she also speaks
at length about the growing U.S. immigrant population and its relevance to the
Socialist movement. Recommended for public libraries and for academic libraries
as primary source material on U.S. Socialist movements.—Laura Torres,

Two words. Overly optimistic. This book is from her lectures during Venezuela Book Fair 2007 and 2008. A lot has changed since then. It may be not impossible but not that probable either. Her judgment based on the strength of immigrants from Latin America. As usual with socialism they emphasized on working class. How their productive labor squeezed by their bourgeoise employers. But hey reality check. US no longer have manufacturing jobs or at least not much. They exported the jobs to China or any cheap labor elsewhere. So your working class are contracting. Not too mentioned the social mobility of them to middle class. Even if the revolution might be possible (one can't be too pessimistic with Occupy Wall Street and else) I don't think the vanguard will be from working class. In fact from the lowest one. Unemployed class(if that class exist). Poverty level increasing in the US and wealth disparity heightening but sadly no one can do anything. Proletariat don't really have the strength and knowledge to force a revolution. With the arming of military police it will harden the situation. Mary is right when she said to prevent revolution capitalism need to find a way to profiteering without damaging the wealth of society be it labor, nature or else. Frankly they found it. The rise of global capitalism solved it. They inflicted their pain elsewhere with Free Trade Agreement. I liked socialism once. Their comrades have a lot of intelligentsia that are rare breeds. But they need to stop waiting for "the big revolution". Karm Marx and Engels waited long enough. It won't come. Even when it comes it will be hijacked by middle class. Sure Cuba did it. But u need a strongman to guard it. Or it will be Stalin all over again.
