Eva Eland is a Dutch author and illustrator who lives in England. She earned an MA with distinction in children’s book illustration from the Cambridge School of Art, and has also studied at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy and the School of Visual Arts in New York.

These titles (and When Sadness Is at Your Door) are wonderful introductions to emotions and the complexity that goes with them. The child is navigating and handling their own emotions of sadness and happiness. The emotions are portrayed as imaginary friends, so the child character interacts with them. I really enjoy the color palette in these books, the repeating colors make sadness/happiness a part of everything, even in something beautiful like the flowers outside. These are excellent books to help kids understand their feelings, especially a sensitive emotion like sadness, that can come and go in different lengths of time. These books are whimsical and thoughtful. I am so impressed by how the illustrations and color palette are simple, but so intentionally placed; it helps make these books so impactful and connects the reader to the message of the book. These books will truly resonate with any age reader.
Books that explain emotions to children are difficult to come by. This one is really quite well done. The illustrations are sparse and show emotions really well.
Are you looking for happiness 😌😌?
It goes by different names.it seems to be hiding while others it's right there, you can try to understand it , collect itor protect it, you can try to catch it. But most of the time happiness appears to have a will of its own

"In that quiet moment you will realize you don't have to keep looking for Happiness. It was always there. Recognize it and treasure it because, in the end, Happiness begins with you"
Love the illustration (it's very cute) and the message as well <3
Happiness is a huge emotion when you're small and not so small. Eland takes younger readers through a journey to see and experience all that happiness can be. She also includes the important message that we can't be happy all the time. Valuable exploration for younger readers to affirm their emotions. Simple illustrations keep readers focused on the message.
I absolutely loved this book and the potential to use it to explain emotions. This could help children understand that happiness will mean various things to different people but also could be brought in to help those with SEN to better understand their own emotions and feelings and that of others.
I especially liked that it draws attention to the fact that it is okay not to feel happy all the time, a concept that children may struggle with. This book could easily be used in PSHE and English lessons.
The illustrations are particularly fascinating to me, the idea that happiness is what you perceive it to be/look like could prove a great discussion point for children.
Absolutely loved this book. Stunning gentle, hopeful illuatrations. I think every classroom should have a copy of this book. The children in my class often read it again and again throughout the year. They love it. I teach 7-8 year olds.
I love all these books about learning to recognize our feelings--the Sadness book by the same author was lovely, and this one was great too (all about pursuing happiness and what things we find happiness in). I love the bright coral color the illustrations use to personify happiness. Very cute!
Oh my goodness, so cute. I didn’t think this could top Sadness, but I think it did. Beautiful, bright illustrations really combines well with the poetic and relatable text. Such a sweet story for kids with anxiety or trouble identifying feelings.
I like how realistic this book is about happiness. We don't have to be happy all the time. We can be all right most of the time and then know how to maximize those bursts of happiness when they show up :).
By the same author of 'When Sadness Comes'. Lovely illustrations and cute messages about the journey to happiness. Can be used to help young children understand big emotions.
