Olivia Hayes is a social media lifestyle guru with many followers. She is very successful, lives in gorgeous Annersley House in Cheshire and she seems to have it all. However, all is not what it seems as Olivia has a past tragedy which hangs over her and her Instagram perfect marriage to Josh in reality is strained. Nicky Wilson is a ghost writer, financially strapped, a bit of a fashion mess and in much need of a haircut and is hired to write Olivia’s autobiography. Nicky wants it to be a tell all while Olivia wants to control it and only publish something which matches the social media lifestyle she presents. The two engage in a polite(ish) tug of war of wills. The story is told from both perspectives.

Although I like the book I cannot say that I love it. The first part narrated by Nicky is the part I engage with the least because it’s not clear why she’s pushing Olivia to tell a story she so clearly doesn’t want to and so my emotion is irritation. She’s the employee and should write what the client wishes. However, I think the pace picks up when Olivia tells the story and your understanding grows. Although it’s hard to warm to Olivia as she’s very controlled and closed off my sympathy grows for her. The characters are not especially likeable for example, Olivia’s husband Josh seems a nice guy at the start and then you begin to see his flaws. Olivia’s friend or not friend Sabrina is not in the least likeable.

As Nicky probes Olivia and pokes around the house looking for evidence of Olivia’s past there are occasions where fear and tension should be felt but these are fleeting rather than consistent. The pacing and plot are uneven too. As the truth emerges it seems predictable and unsurprising.

Overall, there are some good sections that I really enjoy and some that are less engaging. It’s not a bad read by any means but I do not think it’s especially memorable.

Many thanks to NetGalley and Orion Books for the ARC.

The reviews for this book are all over the place, which made me a bit weary. I’m glad I went with it!

Olivia is a wife and mother. She is also an influencer, someone whose made tons of money for sharing pictures of her life to her many adoring fans via Instagram. Nicky is a ghostwriter who is tasked with writing Olivia’s autobiography. She stays at Olivia’s house for a week so that she can interview her and get all she needs to shape the book. However, it seems that Olivia doesn’t want to talk about herself or her past, and would prefer to keep the book light...a “how-to” on living your best life. When Nicky stumbles on something in the expansive garden, she realizes it may be a clue to Olivia’s past, and decides to find out what Olivia doesn’t want anyone to know.

The first half is told from Nicky’s POV. It’s a slow burn. I found it interesting, but felt that I would be disappointed if things don’t ramp up at some point. And ramp up they sure did! The second half is told from Olivia’s POV, and it’s where the story and twists really start gelling. The pacing is a bit off since this section flies by and really holds your attention. The inconsistency might bother some readers, but I was fine with it. What I thought worked really well was how author Emma Rowley made me recall little moments in the first half while reading the the second half. I’m glad I paid attention and didn’t just skim.

I don’t think this story will work for everyone, but I really enjoyed how everything came together. The last section of the book has a lot of information to take in, and can be a bit confusing at first as things jump around, but ultimately works itself into a satisfying conclusion. Mystery solved! 3.5 stars rounded up.

Thank you to Pinnacle/Kensington Books, Emma Rowley, and NetGalley for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Meh.

You Can Trust Me never really came together for me in a way which anchored me to the story. I didn't find the premise particularly well plotted, and the layout felt clunky.

Told from two points of view, the first half the book encompassed Nicky's story, while the second half belonged to Olivia. Nicky's section was frustrating. Why was this girl, this ghostwriter, pushing so hard to get a story from an influencer who obviously wasn't willing to go there? Things became more clear during Olivia's section, but she was so cold and shut-off, her voice was constipated.

I was also incredibly disappointed by the anti-climatic ending. Years of secrets for that?

::sigh:: Meh.

EXCERPT: So that was the official word on the incident: a tragic accident.

And that's it. Almost. There is just one more mention, easy to miss, had I not, out of habit, set the dates as wide as possible for my search, from before the fire to the present day. You never want to overlook any detail.

And that's how I found it, the final link chaining the dead past to this house's living present. It is not a news story but a marriage announcement, dated eight years ago.

Mr J.C. Hayes and Miss O.E. Vane
The engagement is announced between Joshua, eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Hayes of Richmond, London, and Olivia, daughter of the late Mr. Alexander Vane and Mrs. Vane of Annersley, Cheshire.

And that's why I am sitting here, flicking through the cuttings before the session ahead, my stomach twisting in anticipation of what I must address.

She is Olivia Hayes. But once she was Olivia Vane.

This is her house. Her family. Her story.

ABOUT YOU CAN TRUST ME BY EMMA ROWLEY: YOU KNOW NOTHING ABOUT HER.
BUT SHE KNOWS EVERYTHING ABOUT YOU.
Olivia is the domestic goddess-turned-internet sensation who has won millions of followers by sharing her picture-perfect life online. And now she's releasing her tell-all autobiography.

MY THOUGHTS: There are two sides to every story, everyone knows that. But what matters in the end, is who gets to tell it.

The story is told from two perspectives: Nicky, the ghostwriter charged with telling Olivia's story, and from that of Olivia herself. Of the two, I greatly preferred Olivia's narrative. But, in reality, You Can Trust Me by Emma Rowley largely fell flat for me. In the places that should have been suspenseful, I felt nothing. Come on! A hidden cellar in the cellar, that ought to be supremely creepy; I should have been holding my breath in anticipation, but it wasn't, and I wasn't.

The story dragged in parts and, although there were places where the pace would pick up, they were brief and insubstantial. It felt disjointed and incomplete, even at the end. There are two major twists in the story, one of which I guessed when one particular facet of Olivia's background was being studiously ignored, and once that was exposed, the second was a given.

Overall, I was disappointed. I felt that the plot had far more potential than was explored.

⭐⭐.7

After reading Where the Missing Go by this author last year I was keen to read more. I had read such mixed reviews of You Can Trust Me but I really enjoyed it in the end. It is a twisty and frustrating read at times, with not just one but 2 unreliable narrators to figure out. Nothing is as it seems and it wasn't until towards the end when it started coming together that I appreciated the story for what it was. I do recommend this book, but can see why people have not liked it. I read it in an afternoon, sick in bed but not sleepy.

Nicky is a ghostwriter who is struggling to pay her bills. Olivia is an Instagram influencer with thousands of followers and a seemingly perfect life. Nicky arrives to the family estate to write Olivia's story to find that she is very closed off about her past. But why? The writer in Nicky cannot help but be intrigued and begins to investigate it herself. What she discovers is shocking and doesn't add up? What is Olivia hiding and why?

I won't say anymore as to do so will spoil the twists and ending. Just go into this with an open mind an you should enjoy it.

There are two sides to every story. But who is telling the truth?

Nicky is a ghostwriter hired to write Olivia Hayes book. But the more Nicky pushes to learn the truth of who she is the more Olivia withdraws. Why is Olivia so secretive about her past? And why does Nicky seem to care so much? Who really are these women?

Overall a decent enough mystery although a bit disjointed. I honestly didnt care for the characters. None really possessed any amiable traits. I appreciated the many twists the book attempted to take, however they weren't believable and left me feeling unsatisfied.

As a former ghostwriter, I was predisposed to liking this book. There’s a lot to like here. I particularly liked the difference in the writing styles of the two narrators, the premise, and the good insider ghostwriter gossip. The book also has a good ending and things really pick up by the last third or so.

The first half of the book, told by the ghostwriter Nicky in her own voice, was interesting but moved a little slowly. We aren’t told a lot about the mystery and there are some jump scares but no real scares or clues to the ultimate twist. In this sense, the mystery moves at about the same pace as a real-life ghostwriter’s work does when the writer slowly unravels details from the subject’s background. While realistic and interesting it’s not as suspenseful or fast moving as you’d expect from the first half of mystery/thriller.

The second half, told in Olivia’s voice, picks up the pace. Though the story is really well written, I think the character of Olivia (who I think is deliberately written to be cold and unbelievably perfect, as many influencers try to appear) had not really engaged me yet. Olivia started to interest me much more when she talked in her own voice. For that reason this book might have engaged me more if the points of view alternated, rather than saving Olivia for the last half.

I liked this author’s writing style a lot and I’d definitely read another one of her books, I also liked where the story went in the last third or so and think some hints dropped about that might have helped make this more suspenseful for me. Ultimately I think in the end, like the rest of the people in her life, I just didn’t “know” Olivia well enough. But I’d definitely be interested to see what this writer does on another subject, because she definitely has skills.

Thanks to NetGalley, the author and Kensington for the advance copy in exchange for my honest review!

This was a really fun and well written book with some shocking albeit far fetched twists

Right from the start I was really engaged in this book. It was super easy to read and I was hooked from the very start.

I really liked the concept of this book. I really love books about books or writing in one way or another

There were quite a few twists in this book which I definitely didn't see coming.

They were a bit far fetched and unrealistic. There was one particular scene which I definitely rolled my eyes at.

However, they were fun and enjoyable to read.

This was a super quick book to read. If you like mystery thrillers I highly recommend this book.

I'll definitely be checking out more books from this author in the future

"No one is trying to stop it, though, and no one is coming to help. Someone is watching, though. And now it is time to go."

This book is in three parts. Part one is from the perspective of Nicky, a ghostwriter who works with celebrities, helping them get their past memories into their books. Which is where Olivia comes in.
Olivia is an influencer on Instagram, she shares just enough of her life to keep people interested but never shares anything personal.
While trying to write Olivia's story Nicky starts to discover that this perfect woman isn't all she seems and has some pretty dark secrets.
Then Nicky goes missing.
Part two us from Olivia's perspective. When Nicky goes missing, Olivia is on a mission to find out more about this mysterious ghostwriter who has been living in her home. She soon discovers that Nicky was not very truthful about who she was.
But time is against Olivia now, because some secrets have a way of resurfacing.

I really enjoyed this one. I'll admit that the first half of part one was a little slow. But it did pick up. And it soon became a pretty fast paced enjoyable read.

Thank you NetGalley for the chance to review this.

Nicky, a ghostwriter, tells the first half of this tale of secrets. Then Olivia, the woman whose life story she's been hired to write, tells the second half and that when things amp up. Nicky doesn't understand Olivia, a life style guru who wants everyone to see only perfection- they are very different in personality. She does realize, early on at her stay at Olivia's home, that there's something Olivia doesn't want her or anyone else to know. No spoilers from me but know that it's more than a faltering marriage to Josh and money issues. I thought the change in narrators worked well, as it rounded out Olivia, who could have been a hologram without it. Thanks to Netgalley for the ARC. Good characters and pacing along with a slightly tricky plot made this an entertaining read.

I received this book as an ARC from #NetGalley

I struggled a lot. with this one. I wanted to like it, but found it to be very disjointed.

Part One, told from Nicky's perspective, was a very slow burn with what seemed to be a lot of clues but many of them ultimately went no where and only one (kind of sort of) hinted at the big twist.

Part Two, told from Olivia's perspective, was the complete opposite. It included a flurry of information all at once. With tons of exclamation points! All over the place! As if the author underestimated the readers ability to understand--- this was a plot twist! It was overkill! In addition to more relevant information , Olivia's part also included some pieces that seemed to go no where.

The final parts, where the perspectives alternate almost page by page where better, but pretty convoluted and went on directions that you couldn't really see coming but we're ultimately not very satisfying. The final pages just tried to do too much too quicly.

I enjoyed Emma Rowley's first book - "Where the missing go" and was excited to read "You can trust me". Both kept me fully entertained and earned 4 stars.

You can trust me is about Nicky, a struggling ghost writer working on a writing a new book about social influencer Olivia. Nicky has been pretty successful as a writer because she digs deep and builds each story around some type of conflict. . Olivia is cold, poised and not giving up any old secrets. Nicky starts doing more research, a late night party happens and BAM- a twist. We then get a story from Olivia's POV, which ends with a twist And then in the final chapter when you feel good about knowing how everything ends, a final twist.

Loved it! Pure escapism fun. Thank you to #netgalley and #pinnacle for the complimentary copy for an honest review.

Nicky Wilson is a ghostwriter that is tasked with writing the autobiography of lifestyle influencer, Olivia Hayes. Tensions rise when Nicky brings up Olivia’s tragic past in hopes of adding a more intimate element to Olivia’s story. Who is the real Olivia and what is she hiding? Secrets are revealed in this twisted tale of perception versus reality. Through multiple POVs, the battle between fact and fiction captivated me until the surprising conclusion. Who can be trusted in this duplicitous story of deception? This will definitely keep you guessing. “Still. There are two sides to every story, everyone knows that. Who can you trust when you don’t trust the truth? This is an interesting domestic thriller which starts with a best friends suicide and then her guilt over not realizing her friends despair. So much grief leads Livy to suspect murder and not suicide and is driven to discover the truth which closely resembles the recent death of her sister - are they related?

This is the story of Nicky and Olivia, Nicky is a ghostwriter and Olivia is her next job, but she is too cold and doesn’t want to talk about her past and without any juicy details no one will be interested in her biography. So Nicky will start investigating her past, the house she is living and her parents; that’s when she will discover why Olivia is so strict and cold, there’s a big hole in her childhood… and Nicky can’t wait to start asking questions! Ready to trust her with all her deepest secrets?
I am really struggling writing this review, I don’t want to make any spoilers but it’s not easy! The story has so many layers and twists that it’s difficult to keep all the secrets quiet! You just have to know that this is a slow paced story, told between the two perspectives of Nicky and Olivia, their relationship seen between both of them, because as Olivia says, there are two sides of each story and one without the other will not be complete.
Neither Olivia or Nicky are very likable characters, I can understand that Nicky needs to keep her thoughts hidden but she is too noisy sometimes searching in a house she is not welcomed. On the other side I really hated Olivia, she is like an ice queen, nothing bothers her and keeps all her feelings hidden all the time, she has to be perfect. It was interesting that the story has three parts, the perspective of each one and the ending, it shows you the real story, with a couple of unexpected twists that I am sure that any reader will love.
There are some parts that are slower than others, but I was really intrigued with this book, the story and characters work perfectly, the tension between the characters will rise up till it has to explode, damaging everything. If you want to know who will survive, you’ll have to read the book!
You Can Trust Me is a read you’ll not forget. Ready?

A new author to me and a book with a good, solid storyline..
Olivia Hayes is an influencer; her online presence shows her perfect life, her perfect home, her perfect family and her perfect choices. Nicky Wilson is none of these things, but she is a ghostwriter and desperately wants to clinch the deal to write Olivia's biography. But squeaky clean doesn't sell books the same way a few skeletons in the closet will - so can Nicky find out the nitty gritty details? And more to the point, will Olivia let her?
This is just that little bit different and lulled me into a false sense of security where I was thinking it was a nice easy read. Hah! There are hidden depths to this one and it all unfolds very slowly giving the reader plenty of time to absorb it all. I was a bit puzzled when the identity of the narrator suddenly changed- began to think I'd lost it somewhere but a bit of back-tracking soon put me right. This is a well written but confusing novel, and I didn't find it as suspenseful as it could have been. However, it's a decent enough read and may well appeal more to other readers. I'm happy to give it 4*.

The narrative is told from two different perspectives, that of Nicky Wilson and Olivia Hayes.

’Olivia is the domestic goddess-turned-internet sensation who has won millions of followers by sharing her picture-perfect life online. And now she's releasing her tell-all autobiography.’

’Nicky is the ghostwriter tasked with coaxing out the full story - including details of the tragic accident that blighted Olivia's golden childhood.’

When Nicky discovers cracks in the foundation of Olivia’s real-life compared to her picture-perfect-online-persona, Nicky determines to learn the truth at any cost.

My thoughts:

Olivia doesn’t come across as a very likable character, cold and heartless at times, Nicky a bit too nosy. However, it's the changing point-of-views that gives the reader varying perspectives, allowing them to decipher which part of the narrative is fact or fiction…

After all, there are two sides to every story.

That Ending-My Heart! Love it!

After reading such mixed reviews with this book I'll admit I was slightly apprehensive of what it would deliver BUT I am so pleased I read it, I really enjoyed it!

Written from the POV's of 2 characters with the odd flip of timelines, it flawlessly flows between the two characters Olivia and Alex.

The twists and turns are fantastically written, just when I thought I had figured it out another bump in the road appeared to swerve me off in another direction.

The first half of the book, like alot of them on the market could be quite slow going for some BUT STAY WITH IT because the second half will have you wishing it would slow down, there is a whole load of information thrown at you in a short space of time your mind will be wanting to catch up.

This is not a book you can skim over! Emma Rowley expertly brings the second half altogether by reciting very small sections of the first half that you'll have needed to pay attention to!

Fantastic twisty read!

Clever, unpredictable, pacey and brilliantly written. I read this in ONE day which I have only ever done once (Big Little Lies) and never since I had the kids. It was THAT good. The writing and characters drew me in immediately and the author's cliffhanger chapters kept me asking questions and kept me addictive for the answers, well, all day until I finished it! Loved it.

2 unreliable narrators, a lifestyle influencer and the novel ghostwriter, a past and the new present, a facade and the real truth. Those were the core of this book by author Emma Rowley. The author made me doubt everyone while saying – You Can Trust Me. Could I?

Olivia hired a ghostwriter to write her memoir of sorts. Entered Nicky who was soon given a room at her house. As expected, strange things began to happen. Then Nicky disappeared, and I got to hear Olivia’s POV subtly saying one thing – You Can Trust Me. Could I?

The story had some suspenseful moments, where I was delighted in a perverse way about the things that happened to Nicky. The author made the characters unlikable all the while telling me – You Can Trust Me. Could I?

Then came my niggles. The plotlines were rough and staccato. What could have been unexpected became predictable. Twists could be seen a distance away.

Overall I did have fun reading it.

You Can Trust Me by Emma Rowley is an intriguing mystery.

Ghostwriter Nicky Wilson's latest project is writing Instagram influencer Olivia Hayes' autobiography.  Olivia, her husband Josh and their three year old daughter Bea live in a picture perfect home in countryside. In spite of the tiny glimpses she provides of her life and family to her followers,  Olivia is a very private person so Nicky finds it difficult to connect with her. Frustrated by her lack of progress, Nicky turns her attention to the history of Olivia's home after making a puzzling discovery. What she unearths captures her journalist instincts and Nicky continues her attempts to uncover more information.  With her week with Olivia drawing to a close, will Nicky have enough details to write Olivia's story? And what will she do about the unexpected secret she has unearthed about Olivia's past?

Nicky is planning her next project when Olivia has time in her schedule to work on the book project. Their time together gets off to a rocky beginning but Josh smooths over things over for her. Nicky is a bit irritated by the lack of time Olivia allows for their interviews. She is also exasperated by how little her subject is willing to divulge about herself.  Although she is only with the Hayes' family a short time,  Nicky is observant and she soon realizes their lives are not as perfect as Olivia would like her followers to believe.

Olivia is quite reserved and while she is happy to discuss her brand, she does not want to reveal any details about herself or her family. She is sometimes short and rather abrupt with Nicky. She is also prone to changing their plans at the last minute. Olivia's relationship with Josh is not as rosy as she presents but they try to remain civil with one another in front of others. During an extremely stressful situation, it is quite obvious that Olivia is desperate to prevent a long held secret from being revealed. But how far will she go to keep it under wraps?

You Can Trust Me is an engrossing  mystery that is multi-layered and suspenseful. The story is a bit of a slow burn since the first part of the novel provides the build up to the shocking events of the last half of the novel.  With some very unexpected plot twists, Emma Rowley brings this clever mystery to a surprising conclusion. I greatly enjoyed and highly recommend this unique mystery to fans of the genre.

. Nicky is a ghost writer who helps celebrities bring their lives to paper. Olivia is a social media influencer who shares just enough to keep her followers interested in her current projects and affairs but never reveals anything in her personal life. Olivia calls on Nicky to help write a book about how to be a successful influencer. and Nicky is determined to see if the woman behind the social media pages is who she seems to be,

As Nicky starts to research and question Olivia she finds that Olivia is the one who is driving the interview. Olivia chooses not to answer any questions related to her childhood, past or family leaving Nicky stuck for a good story, She begins to research Olivia to see what she could be hiding from her stumbling across a wedding announcement with Olivia's maiden name Vane. Nicky finds that she is connected to the family whose mansion burned to the ground with a body inside that body was identified as her father, Alex Vane. Olivia refuses to answer any questions regarding the fire and begins to find Nicky's presence in her home irritating. Nicky goes missing and the search is on to find her.

Olivia is hiding her secrets from her childhood deep inside. She wants no one to know what happened that night when the fire started. She begins to see Nicky change in front of her the night before she went missing. Her eyes connected with Olivia's when she was able to put together the events that lead to her father being found burned in the house. Oliva finds out quickly that she is being charged with Nicky's murder and is desperate to clear her name.. As she is trying to piece together the night Nicky went missing, she begins to find clues that points to secrets Nicky herself was hiding in plain site.

I found this book to drag a little in the beginning but quickly picked up towards the middle. Told from two points of view in each narrator can be unreliable in their thoughts and actions. Emma Rowley does a good job in writing a slow but steady suspense builder.

Thank you to NetGalley, Emma Rowley and Kingston Books-Pinnacle for allowing me to read this ARC.

Nicky is a professional ghostwriter. What sets her apart from the competition is her ability to do research; to dig deeper and to provide the extra edge; probably as a result of her previous experience as reporter. She is battling financially; having just ended a relationship, she is stuck with the rent of a flat in London that she cannot really afford, and desperately needs a big break.

Olivia is a domestic goddess; a so-called influencer with thousands of fans following her life on Instagram. Marred to a handsome and successful man; mother to a cute 3 year old and living in a luxurious mansion on a huge countryside estate, she is the picture of perfection.

When Nicky is offered the opportunity to (ghost) write Olivia’s biography, she grasps it with both hands, packs and leaves to become part of Olivia’s perfect world for a week, doing interviews in preparation for the writing of the perfect book about Olivia’s perfect life. But all is not as it seems - and soon Nicky is fearing for her life; unsure of who she can trust.

Part 1 of the novel has Nicky as narrator. It soons become clear to the reader that Olivia is hiding events from her past and Nicky is determined to find out what it is. I found it a bit puzzling that a ghostwriter would be so determined to destroy her subject, but part 2 switches to Olivia as narrator and I then realized the brilliance of the plot. Do not make the mistake of underestimating the novel; up to the end of part 1 it is deceptively simple; almost predictable, but, by successfully utilizing the unreliable narrator technique, part 2 jerks the reader right back to attention, and from thereon the novel becomes a rollercoaster ride; fast-paced and with previously cleverly disguised hints suddenly making clear sense.

I found the background regarding the profession of ghostwriting particularly interesting; especially since the author has been a ghostwriter herself before turning to novels (this is her second). Lovers of whodunnits with several twists and turns will devour this novel in a single sitting and it is worthy of 4 stars.

“ People will tell you anything. All you have to do is listen.

Nicky Wilson tells other people’s stories. A successful ghostwriter, she’s penned tell-alls by actors, athletes, television chefs—weaving interviews and anecdotes into memoirs of love, loss, and overcoming adversity. The celebrities get bestseller status, while Nicky pockets her paycheck and moves on.

Olivia Hayes, Nicky’s new client, is the Martha Stewart of influencers, a domestic goddess with a perfectly accessorized home in the English countryside, a handsome husband, and impeccable taste. Through thousands of artfully hash-tagged posts, Olivia shares endlessly, while somehow retaining an air of mystery that enthralls her followers.

Olivia agrees to let Nicky into her house for a week, though she’s frustratingly aloof at first, and seems resentful of Nicky’s presence. Yet little by little, Nicky breaks through the cracks in the glamorous façade. She notices Olivia’s strained relationship with her husband . . . her overcautious parenting of their toddler . . . the money worries the family can’t hide. And then there are deeper secrets—including a tragedy that may shine light not just on Olivia’s past, but on how far she’ll go to preserve the life she’s made.

Soon, Nicky will learn the truth about Olivia. But it may be much more than she wanted to know . . .”

I’m not sure what I was expecting here, and this is my first book by Emma Rowley. The story is told well, but for some reason, I struggled to finish this.

Hopefully, Rowley’s fan base feels differently about it.

Many thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the advanced copy in exchange for an honest review. My opinions are my own.

Told by 2 POVs, Nicky and Olivia. Nicky is a ghostwriter and Olivia is an internet influencer who has won millions of followers by sharing her picture perfect life online. She's releasing her tell-all autobiography. As Nicky looks into Olivia's past, Nicky sees that it's not what it appears. This is a slow build up, but picks up with twists! Thank you to Kensington Publishing and NetGalley for an ebook ARC. This is my honest review.

”There are two sides to every story, everyone knows that. But what matters, in the end, is who gets to tell it.”

Nicky Wilson is a ghost. Not actually, though. She’s a ghost writer, a writer tasked with writing other people’s stories for little to no credit. Those famous celebrities who publish a memoir or advice book? It probably wasn’t written by them because they’re too darn busy. It was most likely written by a ghost writer (what, you don’t actually think Miley Cyrus wrote Miles to Go all by herself at the height of her Disney Channel fame, do you?) That’s where Nicky comes in. She interviews her subjects and then oh so carefully rewrites their story into something readable.

Her new assignment takes her to Olivia Hayes, the newest internet influencer. Her life is picture perfect, and she wants to share how she does it with the world. As Nicky spends more time with Olivia, however, she starts to wonder if her life is anything but perfect. And when she finds some skeletons in Olivia’s closet, the mystery only deepens.

So much potential, so much meh. That is the essence of this book. In the beginning, I was instantly drawn in because of an amazing start and characters that were extremely interesting. As the story got on, it became more meh. And even worse, as it became more meh, it actually started to become more bizarre and incoherent. I couldn’t figure out what the author was trying to go for in this situation.

Not to toot my own horn or anything, but I actually liked my theory of what was going on better than what the author wrote. It seems so obvious, especially with the change in view point, and I hate to say it, but it actually worked better.

Three star reviews are the worst ones to write and that is a hill I am 100 percent willing to die on. I feel decidedly unenthused to write a review for this book because it started out good, but then jumped on the “meh” train to “meh-ville.” The pace was somewhat middling towards the end, the twists were uninspired, and I was left with more questions than answers.
