Kuninaka Aoba, a mercilessly bullied ninth grader, receives a magical contract that grants her greatest wish, but at what cost? Suddenly, Aoba is thrust down a rabbit hole into a strangely familiar world from children’s stories–only this version comes with a dark and gruesome twist. In this Wonderland, it's kill or be killed, in a dark fairy tale fight for survival!

I saw the title, Fairy Tale Battle Royale and that cover with a grime covered girl with swords and I knew I would love it (or I hoped rather and was totally proven right!) So its totally safe to say I love the cover even though its orange (not my favorite color)... I love single character centered covers and the hint in the background added a touch of interest. But then I got INSIDE the volume!! Fairy Tale Battle Royale vol 1 has splendid art... at first it seemed to remind me of Oh My Goddess's internal art but then I realized its only so in a passing sort of way. The character designs totally won me over and the world has this creepy vibe that totally intrigued me!

The art was only the beginning... We got right into the plot and its the classic bullying situation, except Aoba is a budding storyteller!! YES! A favorite sort of character to me... how can I resist a bookworm like myself, and I really related to her situation. This doesn't take long at all to set up and once we hit the fairy tale world I was totally captured... the ghoulish things we see with Aoba simply made me more curious to find out what is going on... I really enjoyed how Fairy Tale Battle Royale vol 1 ended too. It was a good place to transition and it was rather shocking what happened! I didn't really expect that at all, it makes me totally excited for what happens next...

If you think that words like ghoulish and creepy describe a world that you don't really want to learn more about I challenge you to try it anyway... Simply because it intrigues you BECAUSE it contrasts the fairy tale nature of the world so well. Sure its about battles and taking down some creepy characters but not in a horrorish way at all. I was won over by the boy that Aoba meets in this world and there is a neat connection that is made too... I love that its all about wishes in the real world. All of these details, come together in a really dynamic first volume.

I always tell readers to give a manga 4 volumes before they bail on a series but Fairy Tale Battle Royale vol 1 doesn't need that time to develop! I am really anxious to get back into the next volume as I totally want to see what Aoba, her new friend and the mystery girl do next... I hope this is a longer series because there is a lot of possible story to explore... plus the contrast between life in the fairy tale world and the read world is intriguing too... which world will Aoba and her friend choose?

Fairy Tale Battle Royale vol 1 is a fantastic first volume of a brand new manga series that I am sooooo grateful got translated into English... This is a series that you will want to pick up in paper form as the pacing is swift and the story is intriguing. What wish would you be willing to make a contract for? And what fairy tale story would you want to become the star character?

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Authenticity
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Tension
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Plot
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Art

Thanks to Seven Seas for providing me with a copy in exchange for an honest review. It has not influenced my opinions.

Fairy tales x horror x murder? Uhm, sign me up! When Aoba makes a wish on a contract (kids, never do that without knowing for sure it is safe) to have friends instead of people bullying her, her wish comes true... but then she gets sucked into a dark dark place.. Alice in Wonderland but now with dead roaming around. And that is not the only fairy tale, we also meet Noah who got sucked in a fable. It was quite interested to seem them traverse through the lands, getting in other fairy tales/fables and meeting Red Riding Hood (though this time with a black hood and a big gun). I did feel sorry for the kids. They get dumped into a scary place, have an empty book that apparently needs to be filled, and have no clue what is going on. I am guessing that they have to fix those stories, but that may mean killing the ghouls that look like the characters from the stories they got chosen for. I did like that there was a nice mix of scary world with normal world in which Aoba finally can be happy, though I hope it will last. *crosses fingers* I had a laugh at the extras because Aoba isn't used to people interacting with her so much. :P
Also loved who Noah was, oh my that is quite a nice twist. Wonder what his wish was...
The art was also great. And I so need to continue reading this manga. Dark and spooky but also sweet and with a protagonist who loves to read.

I will probably combine both Volume 1 and Volume 2 reviews on my blog as soon as I read Vol.2 and wrote a review.

I dislike when titles lie to me. This one references fairy tales, but I'm mostly given Aesop's fables and Alice in Wonderland, neither of which I'd classify as fairy tales. And as far as the battle royale goes, a few characters halfheartedly stab some zombies/mummies that rather than menacing anyone actually beg to be killed.

Other than that, we have a fairly generic story about a bullied high school girl being mysteriously transported to a mysterious fantasy world where mysteries abound.

I'd probably stop here if I didn't already have the next volume on hand from the library. Onward!

JFC, Japan, stop treating female characters who endure physical and emotional abuse from their peers as noble protagonists. "I'm gonna keep my chin up and endure and soon they'll love me" is the almost as gross as the teacher here, who has special one-on-one sessions with his socially isolated, underage student.

Reread 7/25/21: Still very good! I knew the creepy parts, so I knew what was coming. LOL!

Original Review 3/4/21: This is very different than what I read because I'm not ashamed to say that I love my light, fluffy shojo manga. LOL! Though a good friend of mine recommended this series and thought I would give it a try.

Because of my light shojo manga love, I felt I came in with quite a few expectations. I expected that I might get a little jumpy about the people Aoba meets in the twisted version of this Wonderland. I expected to not enjoy it because it would have some horror elements. I expected it to be somewhat gruesome despite how pretty Aoba is on the cover (not the knights behind her though LOL they are not pretty).

Surprisingly, all those expectations were way off the mark.

And I think even if they were, you start the story feeling extreme empathy for the bullying Aoba endures to intense anger towards her bullies. It was AWFUL! There is bullying in manga, yes, but how nasty these girls were hit hard, especially due to I think me being a writer and one scene involved something Aoba did with her writing.

The twisted Wonderland is NOT gruesome. Despite seeing swords protruding from characters on the front and back cover, there is no blood. The "creatures" (can't say what they are but it’s a GOOD twist) are not quite as scary as my mind conjured. I'm a huge chicken when it comes to anything horror, but I would say it's dark, not horror. They are slightly creepy, but I felt sort of bad for them due to spoilers I can’t share. There is a closing scene of sorts that makes you really wonder what's going on.

And NOAH!!! What a super sweet male hero! Gah, loved that character to pieces! He's so bright and cheerful and just the sweetest! I can’t wait to see more of him in the next volume!

I REALLY liked Aoba! She has such a caring heart and her wanting to dive into books (no pun intended) to escape her less than happy reality is relatable. Plus, her being optimistic in light of the situation she is in is something to be deeply admired.

With all of that said, I'm very intrigued to see what happens in volume two. The ending of volume one opened up a can of words so to speak and I'm really curious as to what exactly this means moving forward.

Recommended to those who like clean dark fantasy and twisted fairy tales, but with a caring MC!

This is a hard one to review. It has a potentially interesting setup--but it's only potentially interesting, because it's (so far) not adequately defined. It involved people being tricked/coerced into making wishes, in exchange for...well, that's the part that isn't clear. Once a person's wish is fulfilled, they get sucked into a sort of...nexus of all fairy tales, for lack of a better term, with them being cast as the protagonist from a particular fable...and that's kind of it. They're given no idea of what to do, but the world's filled with horrible, zombie-like inhabitants, but it isn't clear if they're supposed to fight the zombies, or each other, or what.

The waters are muddied further, by a huge and inexplicable leap in logic that happens about halfway through the volume, where one of the characters Yeah, they see a small demonstration of the effect this has on the world, it isn't clear at all that the person who gets killed is at all different from the other zombies. There's a bit where the character they meet asks "Did you kill them?" but "them" is entirely ambiguous. Unless there's some translation error in here, I don't see how they arrived at the idea in the spoiler tag.

Still, part of me wants to see where this goes. In a way, having the characters be just as much in the dark as the reader adds a nice air of mystery, but it also makes things feel somewhat directionless. Especially when it seems the wish-makers can leave the fairytale world at any time, more or less. Presumably, later chapters will introduce elements that force these folks to head back into danger, but right now it feels like there's something missing. 2.5 stars, rounded up to 3 for nice art, and a setup that I want to like.

CAWPILE Rating: 7.86

Characters:8/10 I thought the characters of Kuninaka and Noah were pretty well developed. I am also very intrigued by the Red Riding Hood character who was introduced while Kuniaka and Noah were exploring the Fairy Tale World.

Atmosphere: 8/10

Writing: 9/10

Plot: 9/10

Intrigue: 8/10

Logic: 5/10

Enjoyment: 8/10 Overall I really enjoyed this story and I am very excited to see where the plot goes. I think the author and artist did a very good job at setting up the Fairy tale world and creating an air of intrigue about why the characters were thrown into the Fairy Tale world. I'm also curious about the contract and where the Battle Royale is going to come into play.

SUMMER READING EXISTS!!!!

This beginning paragraph is gonna be the start of pretty much every review I write, so bear with me.

So yeah I’m trying to get back into reading a ton this summer so here begins my journey through the “TEEN SCENE ROOM” at the library down the street from me—and possibly the one near my grandma’s house since I have cards for both and that one has a larger manga selection.

Anyhow,
Library Book Haul of June 15th consisted of *drumroll pleaaaaaseeee* SEVENTEEN BOOKSRobbie still has one of his books from Monday checked out and so do I, but we don’t talk about that.

But here’s my current list (the one the review is about will be bolded and italicized because I’m feeling nice):

Oh yeah, disclaimer: I still have the light novel from Monday out, so that’s only one actual book out of the lot.

SO TO THE ACTUAL REVIEW

Fairy Tale Battle Royale (Volume 1) by Soraho Ina

I grabbed the first four volumes of this series because I liked the cover art and needed something to add to my to-be-read pile from the library that day. The characters are fun to read about, and the concept of them having to “fix” the story world is really cool, sorry I’m running out of good adjectives for these reviews.

------------------------

TL;DR

I really like graphic novels and manga, not actual books, and got a lot of them at the library.

It has a really cool concept and I really enjoyed the first volume of this series.

Kids, when offered a contract from unusual magical entities or mysterious objects such as wish granting contracts please be aware there is a growing number of cases where said contracts will lead you to a world of pain and sometimes lead to conditions requiring forced labor at the sake of preventing some greater evil then your contractor.

Rated Teen this book has moments of abuse and violence so use your best judgement if you let a younger reader have at this horror story through the looking glass. This story is a little horror and a little magical girl (and boy) set in a world of fairy tales, fables, and stories so I am hoping the story shows us some cool story scenes in the future as the children discover secrets of the world and learn who they can trust while they face the unknown.

Poor abused Aobi is picked on by bullies and finds socializing difficult but her love for stories has granted her an incredible ability to escape into her imaginary worlds where she can hide from the pains she suffers in the real world. As a matter of fact the bullying Aobi suffers from seems unusually terrible compared to normal bullies making me wonder how she became of victim of the trio of terror that picked on her while other students watched and teachers failed to help against. Mind you all bullying is wrong but it kind of makes me want to know what her home life is like or why she was being bullied before she is granted a wish that turned her life around. Also what is with Aobi's teacher? He seems pretty impotent when it comes to helping her against the bullies and ends up talking her one on one which would be a nono in today's society as far as I know. At least he is not as bad as the teacher from Azumanga Daioh.

Is about a girl named aoba who love reading alice in wonderland at school but in other hand she been faced by her bullies who rip the fmc storybook apart. All of a sudden there's was a contract about become the main character alice in exchange for her wish to come true, once she wrote her wish on the contract, she tossed it at the rubbish bin. In next day, the bullies in all sudden wanted tell aoba that they feel sorry for her for everything they done to her even the classmate stand against the bullies. After the school, she saw the book n was about to take it but she been sucked to the other world, there she meet noah - the boy who dressed like in other story. They were running away from unknown cast that looked like zombie n meet mystery girl who shoot the zombie in her path. Noah & aoba back to the reality world, it turns out that noah is a celebrity guy from other country. I give it 3.6 ⭐ but I still looking forward for the next volume :) hope there's action, fight n adventure to complete their story in their books.

This was...interesting. A new twist on classic fairy tales where Aoba relives messed up fairy tales while taking on the role of Alice. The goal? The put the fairy tales back to right by any means necessary.

How did she get into this mess? Well she signed a contract by writing down her one greatest wish/goal, to be friends with everyone, and got sucked into the story book as her favorite character, Alice. As in Alice in Wonderland/Through the Looking Glass. She meets up in this Storyland with a boy named Noah who is also playing the role of a book character(from some story called the Man, the Boy and the Donkey?) and has a brief bump in with a girl who looks like she is playing the part of Little Red Riding Hood.

Basically this book is a giant, brief, glossed over explanation of what is going on. You also get a brief look of who Aoba and Noah are in real life.

It's a bit soon to actually judge the series, but it looks interesting enough so far.

This was an alright introduction. The manga series is called Fairy Tale Battle Royale, though technically Alice Adventures in Wonderland isn't a fairy tale, but I'll let that slide. I have yet to see the Battle Royale aspect, but I'm hoping this will come in the second volume.

I got to say though, that teacher of Aoba

YIKES. Hella creepy and incredibly uncomfortable seeing his interactions with Aoba and him SPYING on the female students...

Really intriguing premise for a series I'm excited to read more of!

There's something so addicting about reworked fairytale plots, and the first volume in this series is no exception. A girl signs a mysterious contract to stop her classmates from bullying her, and in turn, she's transported into Alice in Wonderland as the "new" protagonist. After the old protagonist crumbles to dust in front of her, she finds other teens like her who have been transported as "protagonists" into stories taking place in dark versions of familiar fairytales.

A bit of violence and gore and creepy takes on beloved childhood characters, a mix of survival and world-hopping, and an intriguing growing relationship/friendship between Aoba and Noah in both the real world and messed-up-fairytale-land, all makes for great read with beautiful and dark artwork and spooky atmospheric vibes!

This is the first time I have ever read a Manga! And this first experience is already a good one! I love the plot and the setting where it took place. A darker version of a fairy tale. And the way of reading this manga was pretty alien to me. You must read it from right to left instead of left to right which i am just to all these years of reading. But it was a cool and fun experience! So if you like watching anime and you love to read, definitely give a manga a go! Go take a manga of your favourite anime or take this manga for a good learning perspective.

Well, it wasn’t as...fairy tale battle royale as I was hoping based on the title.😂 However, it was good! Definitely a li’l creepier than I thought it would be (if you’re fine with School-Live! you will be fine with this though:)) It was more tense and mysteriously fantastical than ‘fairy tale characters Hunger Games’ which is what I thought I was getting. Aoba is cute and I want to know more about Noah. The art kinda reminds me of The Promised Neverland.
4 solid stars.

Looking forward to picking up volume 2!

I’m giving this a 4 star mostly for the cliches. It’s a good story so far, a bit dark but the plots interesting enough that I’m wondering what happens next. Our main character fits the typical role of the bullied but nice girl who somehow finds herself in some twisted wonderland. There she meets 2 people who seem to be in the same situation as her but where one is just as clueless as she is the other is taking extreme measures, very extreme. The story so far hasn’t really given us much information about this dark fairytale world but what I’ve seen so far has me wanting to learn more.

I haven't read a proper manga book before, only style wise so this was a challenge to remember how to read it lol. But i loved the charater Aoba and I'm a huge Alice fan so seeing Aoba go into the story was exciting. There was some cool freaky illustrations of some of the storybook characters, almost zombie like, that sold me completely.

Sad the other 2 in this series come out next year! Too far away!

Fairy Tale Battle Royal Vol. 1 by Soraho Ina is a fun new series featuring another world and fairy tale characters who seem to want our protagonist dead. The story takes place in two worlds, contemporary Japan and a fantasy world where the location of one fairy tale blends into the next.

Aoba Kuninaka is a 9th grader who is constantly bullied by her classmates. Aoba is a character many of us can relate to on one level or another. She’s a typical student in many ways, one that is mercilessly bullied by her classmates. She’s a reader, escaping into fiction, primarily Alice in Wonderland, as well as writing and drawing stories of her own. The manga begins in a familiar way, introducing us to Aoba, her classmates, and her homeroom teacher. The man seems kind enough and is obviously worried for her welfare, but is unable to actually lessen or put an end to the bullying. Aoba is left navigating her days alone, trying to be unobtrusive and escaping into the Alice’s Wonderland.

This is more than a vague getting lost in literature you love sort of a thing. One day Aoba finds an odd contract, one that talks about Alice and Wonderland. Confused and suspicious, she throws it away. But it has a way of coming back until, finally, Alice signs. Soon, she finds herself in another world entirely.

The fantasy realm she finds herself in is one that is both immediately familiar and incredibly unsettling. It is Wonderland she’s fallen into, but not the one Aoba expected. This place is empty, void of the many fascinating inhabitants the books portray. Instead, there is a zombie-like creature who looks eerily similar to the Alice in all the stories Aoba’s read. This isn’t the carefree realm of fantasy and stories. This is a deadly place, a frightening one.

Aoba isn’t the only one who’s signed a contract, either. She meets two others. One is a largely unknown entity, a fighter and protagonist of a yet undisclosed story. The other is Noah, a young man from England who is the protagonist from one of Aesop’s Fables. I found this quite interesting. Despite its fame, Aesop’s Fables don’t seem to always work their way into narratives such as this one which lean heavily upon famous fairy tales and other stories. I’m very interested to see what other stories are going to work their way into this manga.

Ultimately, this is only the beginning of a story with an interesting concept. There is a quite a bit of set-up within this volume. We learn about both Aoba’s regular life, and see this other world. Yet, most questions aren’t answered. We don’t know who created the contract or what they want. What happened to these other protagonists? Why is everyone a zombie-like monster intent on killing these protagonists? How exactly do they go from one world to another? Nothing is very explained, and the reader is left in the same place as the protagonist. We haven’t quite gotten to the battle royal part of the manga’s title, though it isn’t so difficult to see how this aspect might be incorporated.

The art in this manga quite fun. The characters have distinguishable, cute, charming designs. This makes the horror aspect of the antagonist’s that much stronger, portraying them as truly gruesome figures in a lovely fantasy world. Backgrounds aren’t always highly detailed, something that is perhaps a bit more prominent when in the modern school setting than elsewhere.

I am quite interested to see where this series is going. I’m in intrigued. The setting, plot, and characters have peaked my interest. I will be picking up further volumes at some time in the future. If you like fantasy, fairy tales, and the slightest bit of horror I’d suggest picking up a copy of Fairy Tale Battle Royal Vol. 1 by Soraho Ina.

I received a copy of this manga from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.

This book is so much explanation that explains nothing. You get a bit of the two main characters and then nothing. Nothing like is seen on the cover, and I still don’t get where the title comes from. However, I am intrigued and do own volume 2 so I will continue on and see if I shall remain with this series or not.

I’ve never really read manga but so many people talk about it so I wanted to try some. I thought I would really like this one because it has influences of Alice in Wonderland. I’m still trying to get used to the artwork but the story was very interesting! I did enjoy reading this and can’t wait to get the next one of the series.

Aoba signs a contract to get out of being bullied that ends up with her in a fantasy world based partially on Alice in Wonderland.

The art in this is fair and there are a few hints of interesting things but mostly it's a confusing, slow-moving set up. Based on reviews I read of the rest of the volumes, I'm ok with not continuing in this series.
