They can save the human race. To do it, they must take down their own government.
Sixteen-year-old Jema is on the run. Branded a traitor for trying to share a DNA-based cure for a lethal contagion, she and her friends are hunted by forces loyal to her sinister uncle. And unless they force him to release the formula, she fears a worldwide war to claim the antigen.
Forced to fight like soldiers in the desolate desert, Jema learns there could be sympathizers who will support a coup. But with only scavenged food and fading hope, she and her small group of grimly determined teens face a deadly trek across dangerous territory.
Can Jema get the cure in the public domain before the planet descends into bloodshed and chaos?

Torch is book two in the Lovelock Series by Tricia Copeland- it’s the intriguing sequel to Lovelock Ones (Book One). This is a very interesting and thought provoking sci-fi, post-apocalyptic/dystopian adventure story with plenty of action, dramatic developments, danger- and more. And I couldn’t help drawing parallels to what’s going on in our world right now. In Lovelock Ones, the story gave an intriguing look at the world after a flu epidemic wipes out three quarters of the population in less than two years- leaving the remaining population dealing with massive poverty, famine, global warming, government control, factions, DNA testing/typing, and the ever present treat of another epidemic. We met Jema and Troy back in book one and followed them on quite an adventure. Torch sees us joining back up with them to continue the next phase of their adventure. The virus has reared its ugly head once more. With the cure/vaccine being held back whilst the powers that be battle it out for control. It’s going to be up to Jema and Troy to step up and to save humanity. This is a tense race against time- with the fate of the world riding on the outcome. Again, the way the story ended left an opening for more stories in the future- I will definitely keep a lookout for one, as well as any future work by Ms. Copeland. So, if you love a tense, sci fi/dystopian story, with an intriguing storyline and fantastic characters- then this book/series is definitely for you!
In Torch, Tricia Copeland paints a picture of a future that eerily could happen if humankind continues on its destructive path. The base for this series – a killer virus and a battle to own the cure – gives a bleak nod to current events.
Jema and Troy are gritty and determined with a maturity beyond their teen years, but Tricia gives us glimpses into the people they might be, or could be, if they weren’t running for their lives, by finding quiet times to lighten the intensity of the story. Jema and Troy are loyal to their friends and scarred from the events that have led them to this point, but they don’t lose their optimism or the focus on their goal.
Torch is a fast-paced read with twists along the way. The ending leads me to believe another Lovelock ones book will be coming, but – no worries for readers who dislike cliff hangers – it also ties up this book’s events quite nicely.
I had not read the first book in the series before starting Torch, but I was able to follow the story line. Tricia provides just the right amount of backstory without slowing the action. However, for more background on these characters and the events at play, I would recommend starting from the beginning with Lovelock Ones.
If you like dystopian novels with strong characters and on-the-run action, you’ll want to add the Lovelock Ones series to your list.
In the is where this book takes place. I would recommend reading the first book in the series before leaping into the second as character have already been established there. Tory and Jema are on the run. The base of this arrow is about a killer virus and a battle with its cure this real hits home due to the current predicaments. I felt like I was right there with Tory and Jema and stepping with them.
This is a read with many twist and that are unexpected. It's up to Jema and Tory to save humanity.
This fierce plot-driven book is the sequel following the debut novel in the Lovelock Ones series. It continues the story of Jema Walker and her love interest and partner in crime, Troy Masterson. The flu virus has returned, Jema’s dictatorial uncle and imperial grandfather are in a war threatening, wrestling match over who should be in control of the vaccine and cure, which is being distributed to no one, and Jema and Troy find themselves in a continuing position to stand up and be the heroes. Unlike the first book, which delivers points of view from both Jema and Troy, Torch is Jema’s story completely.
Be aware that this is a plot-driven story. Readers who prefer character-driven stories may notice a general lack of character development. Jema and Troy are very likeable, but there is a disconnect that prevented me from fully getting to know and love them. The character development does gradually improve and dialogue becomes a strong catalyst in this area from about midpoint to the end of the book. I definitely enjoyed the interactions between characters in the final chapters.
Those who love a good fast-paced plot will be pleased with the pacing and no-nonsense story line. As an added bonus, and especially endearing in a plot-driven book, are a couple of rare scenes in the midst of the action when varying characters truly make an emotional connection through dialogue and physical actions that rattles the heartstrings of readers. I also really enjoyed the author's voice.
My main critique would be that the danger the virus imposes loses much of its fire because no one is dying in the story. The virus is portrayed as a distant plague that is not directly affecting anyone near Jema and Troy, which seems unrealistic and takes away from the urgency of their mission to save the world.
Aside from this one plot deficiency, the series is reminiscent of a mixture of two well-known works: Divergent and The Hunger Games. I felt a profound connection to these famous novels within the pages of this book.
Torch (Lovelock Book 2) By Tricia Copeland 5 out of 5 stars
The story Torch (Lovelock Book 2) by Tricia Copeland is a YA/Dystopian book that I loved reading. It is a story that had me hooked from the beginning and didn’t let me go until the final page. It is a story that includes danger, secrets, action, and wonderful characters that I couldn’t help but root for their success. I love the character of Jema. She is a young girl who is feisty, strong, and independent. She has been branded as a traitor. Who can she trust? Can she get the cure for a lethal contagion to be released? This is a fast-paced story that I was on the edge of my seat wondering what was going to happen next. Jema is a character that has a fierce determination. Many other characters interact with Jema and I enjoyed reading about. They are helpful to her. Then some only look after themselves and have their own agenda. The story is written in such a way that I felt like I was right there with Jema. I also found my emotions going up and down through the book. Don’t miss out on a story that I found entertaining and full of twists and turns that I didn’t see coming. I highly recommend reading it.
Let me start with saying I absolutely loved the first book in this series, and I seriously loved this one but, it's been so long since I read the first that it took me quite a while to put everything in order again in my mind. Some things I never did get worked out so really wish I had read the first one again before starting this one. I will make sure to reread both of these before the next one comes out.
It was Book 1 that started my now love for Dystopian novels..These are written so well and feel so real, especially with our world in the state it is in right now. I love Troy and Jema, and many of the secondary characters. I truly felt as though I was fighting this battle with them throughout.
This is an awesome story, one that I completely connected with and can not wait for more of this series as well as from this author. I love her writing style and how when I start I don't want to put the books down.
I would not try to read this by itself, there's quite a few moving parts that start in book 1 and they are both fabulous reads!
Torch is the 2nd book in the Lovelock series by Tricia Copeland. It picks up where LoveLock Ones left off, so it should be read in order. The downfall of reading a brand new book, is now I have to wait for the next book in the series. This series is a solid dystopian series, with a twist of science fiction. It is action packed and you won't want to put it down. I was hoping this book would end differently, but instead it leaves us with a lot of anxiety and frustration. It is a wonderfully written story, with strong characters and a solid plot. The book follows Jema, a teenager on the run, after being branded a traitor. Her uncle is about to cause WWIII and Jema and her friends are trying to prevent that. There is a deadly virus circulating, and Jema and her boyfriend Troy were the keys to making a cure. They are constantly on the run, fighting for survival. Jema has the weight of the world on her shoulders, along with the survival of their group. It's a lot for a 16 year old, but she is strong and one of the best female leads I've read about. Highly recommend this series. Copeland, hurry up with book 3 now, anxiously awaiting!
The more I read Tricia Copeland, the more she’s becoming my favorite author. She has a way of telling stories that capture your imagination or stir deeply within you. This science fiction read is no different. In this read, that’s completely different from any other books by the same author, we find 16-yr-old Jema, a teen fugitive marked runaway who exposed a DNA based deadly virus, she and her allies are being hunted by her menacing uncle. Until she can put pressure on him to release the antidote, the world will be at risk. Subjected to fighting like soldiers in a desert island, Jema seeks out those who’ll take pity on the group in an effort to help them but their supplies are being depleted at every turn for the teen and her allies, it’s a fatal trek to escape. Can Jema heal the public territory before the world sinks into the abyss? Great read again from Tricia Copeland as it’s full of action, bravery, and time-pacing to surely have your heart racing!
This young adult dystopian novel is a fast paced read, second in the lovelock series and is heavily action based. 16 year old Jema along with her friends is faced with an almost impossible task to save the world, against a deadly virus. Her sinister uncle, who rules the government is against releasing the cure for this lethal contagion. So, in the middle of the desert, with limited resources, she has to battle against time to get the cure out. She and her friends are branded as traitors and are on the chase. The most interesting part about this book is that we can relate it to what is happening around us now with the pandemic around us. The virus is up on the rise and if the cure is not found, the whole world is at risk. Rings a very familiar bell right? I enjoyed reading this page turner. The only thing I thought was that the plot is so heavily action packed and dialogue oriented, there is a very little description of the setting of the story itself. The reader doesn’t miss it in the midst of all the action, but it would have been more interesting to read when more attention is paid to the little details around the setting, which most authors do, to enhance the beauty of the story.
Torch (Lovelock Book 2) by Tricia Copeland. This author continues to impress me. This is a bit outside my wheel house of reading but I have come to really enjoy it. The characters draw you into their world and take you on an incredible journey you won’t soon forget. There’s twists and turns I wasn’t disappointed by and found myself on the edge of my seat more often than not. I like the action and pace of this story. It’s well written and has characters that bring this incredible storyline to life right before your eyes. Characters are complex and relatable. I’ve come to have a great appreciation for this Type of story I love a book the keeps me guessing and connected. I’m definitely looking forward and excited to see where this author takes readers next next four big stars and highly recommended!
Torch is the second book in the Lovelock series. I recommend reading the first book to get the background.
This is a fast-paced dystopian novel with a lot of twists and turns. It will keep you engaged as you follow Jema and Troy in the next phase of their journey. Torch is full of adventure as the kids do their best to figure out who they can trust as they try to save the world. This story is a great sequel to the first book and has left things with room for more stories to develop.
The one thing I will say is that if you are struggling with news overload about what is happening with COVID-19 right now, you may not be able to enjoy this as much as it deserves. I think I would have been able to appreciate this even more if I had waited to read it when I’m not inundated with IRL news.
This is the second novel in the Lovelock Books from Tricia Copeland. I would really recommend reading the first book before you dive into this one as it sets up a lot of the story and things may get a tad confusing trying to traverse this second novel. This one is also set in a dystopian type world and gives us a front row seat as Jema and Troy tackle each obstacle and adventure in the novel. The end goal is to save the world so things of course can be pretty epic. I loved the adventure and the sense of intrigue as you read and how I managed to keep myself literally on the edge of my seat to find out what would happen. These novels tend to keep me either interested and intrigued or overwhelm me and are hard to read, and this one definitely falls in the intrigue and interested category. I look forward to seeing what will happen next for the kids as they move forward with the next novel.
Torch (Lovelock Book 2) by Tricia Copeland was a great dystopian novel. It is the second book in a series. I have not read the first book and was worried about reading this book out of turn. I was pleased, however, with the explanation the author gave to help readers know what is occurring. The storyline revisited what occurred in book one which helped me tremendously. I do want to go back and read the first book based on how much I enjoyed this book. It took me some time to get into it though. I loved the characters and was amazed with everything they went through. I loved how prepared they were for the circumstances. This is an enjoyable novel and I look forward to reading more from this author.
I want to start by saying that if you haven't read book 1 first I think you should so you can get a better understanding because book 2 is a continuation from the first one, and of course it's a great book. This book is full of adventure, danger, action, and unexpected turns. We follow Jema and Troy as they are in a race against time to try to save humanity. We get introduced to new characters and experience their relationships with each other evolve. Even though Jema and Troy are young, they are strong survivors. The author wrote a great story with vivid detail so I felt like I was along for the adventure. I can't wait to see what comes out next. I recommend this book.
Torch by Tricia Copeland is the second book in the Lovelock series. I recommend reading the first book before this because this is truly a continuation of the story. If you like YA, dystopian, sci-fi, or adventure you will enjoy this story. It is fast paced and kept me reading until late into the night. I really enjoy the Jema because she is at the heart of trying to save everyone but has been named as a traitor. Those who she comes across are a varied lot. Who and why should she trust them? This story is really timely because it is dealing with a contagion which has been taking out the population and the cure for all. Greed is a big player in the motives of people at the top rungs. Can Jema get the cure before it is too late? I look forward to reading more from this author in the future.
Torch (Lovelock Book 2) by Tricia Copeland is an intriguing YA sci fi dystopian adventure story that is set in the future. It is set in post apocalyptic times after the loss of most of the population due to a flu pandemic. Having thought the virus gone it once again threatens all that is left and the powers to be fighting over the cure. As expected the world in which everyone knew has long gone and they have been living with famine and poverty, and a race against time as our main characters try to save the day but it is a race against time and the danger and action is running rife. Who can be trusted and who can not? Tricia gives us a run for our money as we journey along with these young adults who are trying to do what’s right whilst staying out of danger.
If you love a sci fi dystopian world story then you will love this series.
Torch is the second book in this series. Don't worry if you haven't read the first one, because Tricia gives just the right amount of information for you to know what is going on. Jemma and Troy are on a mission to save the human race. While on their misson they pick up some friends, that will help them fight her evil uncle and hopefully save her mom and sister. The way this book ends make me think that there will be a third book in this series. For those that don't like cliffhangers, Don't worry you not left hanging. I am so very honored to be able to read an ARC of this book. I can not wait for the next book in this series
I enjoyed this Young Adult action story. The author’s attention to details made me feel as if I was right there with the characters. They made the story and kept me turning pages fast. The twists and turns they took me on had me sitting on the edge of my seat just waiting to see what would happen next. This is a story about a battle for survival. Jema is sixteen and has been branded a traitor. Jema and her group of friends take you on an adventure that could lead into bloodshed and turn things upside down for the planet. I enjoyed watching Jema grow throughout the story and how supportive her friends were. I highly recommend this book and this author.
Torch (Lovelock Book 2) by Tricia Copeland 4 out of 5 stars Torch is the second book in the Lovelocked Series. This is a great series. I have a hard time with some young adult series, but this series is amazing. This book gives us the story of Jema and Troy. Jema’s government is after her, for something that is way over her head. There is a disease spreading through the community there is only one cure, and it runs in Jema’s veins. Branded a loyalist to her uncle and a traitor to her country, Jema, and her friends are on the run. Fighting for their lives in a desolate desert, Jema and her friends find a group of sympathizers who will help her. And help her get the cure to the people. This YA dystopian science fiction book has a little bit for all genre lovers. Copeland is an amazing storyteller and she never ceases to amaze me with each new book. Highly recommended for all genre lovers.
Torch by Tricia Copeland a four-star read that will shine a light for you. This is the second story in the Lovelock YA Dystopian science fiction series and it picks up after the first so its likely best you read them in order I have and I enjoyed them both that way. This was startling real at the moment as the first story revels a world after a flu wipes out most of the population and now its back, this story is about how the powerful few control how they cope with this second wave and how power controls. Jema is a great character and she will take you on a rollercoaster of a ride that will have you clinging to the story by you fingertips.
Torch by Tricia Copeland is the second book in the Lovelock series I would recommend reading this series in order as it continues on from book one, with the same characters and story line. This book is a fantastic follow up to book one. I was transported back into Jema’s world so quickly and easily. This book was as exciting and fast paced as the first one. I couldn’t wait to find out what was going to happen. If you are a fan of this genre then I would definitely recommend you try this series. It is well written, exciting and have characters that are so easy to get behind. I am enjoying this very much and can’t wait to see what else might be to come.
This is the second book in the Lovelock series. I was surprised at the difference in this story compared to the first one. I think it helps reading the first book before this one- but backstory is really important to me. The one thing that threw me was the name changes- though I understand the reason for it, it was slightly confusing. Jema and Troy are in this book as the main characters- but I feel like Troy was less of a main this time around and more background. I did enjoy the story- I’m interested to see if there’s another book in the making. I would be curious to see where they take the story from here.
This is a continuation from the last book. Troy and Jema are living off the grid, trying to survive. I loved that part of the book. Seeing what they did at their location to survive. The story surprised me at times and others it seemed in limbo. The characters are intriguing. I mean Troy and Jema are very smart and ingenious. They impress me with their maturity. When other people are added to the mix they take Troy and Jema at age value. They are always surprised when they realize what Troy and Jema can and will do to survive. I do enjoy all the coded messages, whistles and sign language among others that they use for communication. That was very cool!
Overall I didn’t love this (I really wanted to because book 1 impressed me so much). Among the action and drama there were too many lull times. I know some are expected but I was almost to the point of flipping pages during that time. The character building is good although I didn’t see much growth in the two main characters (secondary characters-yes). The world created was still great. Very different to think of the US that way. That ending??? It just blew me away! I was surprised and shocked!
I just love dystopian stories. Torch (Lovelock Book 2) by Tricia Copeland did not disappoint. It’s geared towards the young adult crowd but adults will enjoy this one too. I loved the story, the characters and the great world the author has set up for us. I got a little bogged down in the preparation details but hey I am old. Folks that are really into dystopian novels and survivor type details are really going to love this one. This one is book 2 and I for sure will be reading book 3. Cause you know, I gotta know.
Torch is the second book in the Lovelock series by Tricia Copeland. This YA/Dystopian is filled with action, adventure and deep provoking subjects. I would highly recommend you read book one, Lovelock Ones, first to get the full storyline. Jema and her friends are back and trying to save the world. Tricia Copeland is a great storyteller and this series is one of my favorites. I enjoyed the growth of the characters. I read this book in one sitting. I couldn’t put it down.
Having read the previous book in this series and enjoying I was looking forward to this one and I wasn’t disappointed. The dystopian genre isn’t really one that I read but I found I was really able to get in to this story quite quickly. It was an interesting and intriguing read and with the world currently going through the situation we are the book is actually quite apt – maybe that’s why I felt like I could get into more as I was able to draw some parallels to real life possibly?!? Just hopefully not the vaccine part of the book!! The authors writing is great, she really drags you into the world that she has created and her descriptive language is great – really helps me as a reader build a picture of what I am reading. It was also nice to read a more plot driven story – I felt like I was really into what I was reading rather than thinking about the characters and their development. Overall a good read, interesting storyline and I would definitely recommend it.
Torch by Tricia Copeland was a great novel! I had a little trouble with events in the beginning, as this is the second novel in the Lovelock series, and I have not read the first book in the series yet. However after getting into it, I found I immensely enjoyed it! A very apocalyptic/post-apocalyptic novel, this felt very preeminent to me, in the fact that with everything in the world going on right now the way it is, this could very well be out future in a couple of years. So I felt some melancholy while reading, but it was a great read! I highly recommend this novel.
I love a good YA dystopian adventure and man, Copeland continues to master this tale. I really enjoyed this series’ latest installment and found it to be absolutely riveting. I was glued to the pages and couldn’t digest the content fast enough. My only complaint - I don’t have the next book in the series in my hand now. Loved it!
Torch (Lovelock Book 2) by Tricia Copeland. This is the amazing continuing story from Book 1. Its the story of a group of teens trying to save their world. Jema is a 16 year old who has been deemed a traitor by her government for trying to share the DNA based cure for a lethal contagion in her world. Her own government is trying to hunt her and her friends down. Jema is a hard headed, strong, and lethal 16 year old girl and she will stop at nothing to save her people. Jema's sinister uncle is leading the people trying to stop her and they must find him and force him to release the DNA cure. Fighting in horrible conditions in the desert she is learning of some people who may help her and her friends. But are they too late? Will they be able to win the war waged or will the be too late?
Action-packed, intense read that I had trouble putting down! Full review to come . . . So, it's been a minute since I read the first book in this series, Lovelock Ones. It took me a couple chapters to get back into the story here but once I did, it didn't let me go! Jema and Troy were trying to save humanity. But they have a lot of obstacles. I felt like I was there with them, each step of the way. I could picture what they were seeing and feel the desperation and urgency in what they were doing. I was holding my breath, waiting to see what was next for this group and would they accomplish what they set out to do! If you haven't read Lovelock Ones, do that first then come back and get your hands on this book!
