THE ALASKA STRAIN is a full-length horror novel that can be read as a standalone.
The Kielder Strain is the first book in the series and it was a great book, this one is even better.
This time “The Institute” has brought their experiments with wolves and humans to Volkalok Island. The island is known for having no wolves, but it has other wildlife.
Bears, deers, feral dogs are some of the animals known to exist there, but visitors to the island keep hearing wolves. Sometimes they are very near.
Rachel Bonds is an investigative journalist. She is visiting the island to search for a friend, Chris Miller, a D-list celebrity.
He sent her a video mail of him being attacked by a woman who looks like a wolf. Rachel is filled with curiosity about the video and has decided to plunge into her search.
She is dissuaded by everyone she meets in every direction she goes that she is imagining things including the calling of wolves.
But the werewolves don’t stay hidden. They do as they will. One by one, their presence is known, for The Institute can’t keep them hidden away any longer.
Now that the cat is out of the bag, or the wolf is out of the woods, will the people on the island be willing to live with the wolves?
After having read the first book in the series, I had been looking forward to reading this one too. Heads up though: read it in daylight hours, this is one seriously scary book!
Rachel is on a mission to track down her friend Chris, who goes missing whilst on a wildnerness trip in Alaska. Along the way, Rachel meets Peter, who is going to the same Alaskan island for a whole other reason. As Rachel is an investigative journalist, Peter is reluctant to say too much but she figures out a whole lot of things on her own (although what she ended up doing, blew my mind!).
This is a bit of a convoluted story and it helps if you have read the first book, but you can also easily read it as a standalone. It started off strong, wandered a bit in the middle and had a moderately strong finish (although it is clear that there is another story to come - looking forward to reading that one too!).
The author of this book has an excellent imagination, clearly, and a good storytelling way about her which I like. Bit of storyline tightening up in the middle would have helped but it was still enjoyable - in a macabre kind of way.
