For three years, paranormal courier Frank Corrigan has been working for incubus demon Cael Berith. Cael knows Frank is his mate, but Frank is pretty sure Cael doesn’t even like him, never mind want to spend the rest of his life with him, so their personal relationship is at an impasse. When Frank’s sister, Lindsey, gets bitten by a werewolf she's sleeping with—and possibly witnesses a murder—Frank rides to her rescue. If he’s lucky, he might just save his love life too.
Mary Calmes believes in romance, happily ever afters, and the faith it takes for her characters to get there. She bleeds coffee, thinks chocolate should be its own food group, and currently lives in Kentucky with a six-pound furry ninja that protects her from baby birds, spiders and the neighbor’s dogs. To stay up to date on her ponderings and pandemonium (as well as the adventures of the ninja) follow her on Twitter @MaryCalmes, connect with her on Facebook, and subscribe to her Mary’s Mob newsletter.
I was off the Mary Calmes hype train for a while but now I am firmly back on it. Why? Because for once, Calmes didn't resubscribe to her tired and tested method of having a cardboard cutout Jin/Jory/Milo who is beloved by all and unearthly beautiful. For once the MC is FAT and RELATABLE. And yes, I know how ridiculous that sounds considering he falls in love with a demon- but still Frank was written for readers like me.
Frank is a mihr- a human who is impervious to magical manipulation like Bella's shield but clever. This makes him a subject of interest to the mafioso like lives of supernatural creatures. He becomes a messenger for them. Keeps his head down and does his job.
Meanwhile, demon supremo Cael, who seemed to have been manufactured from my anime dreams is madly in love with Frank. They're meant to be. They're snorts mates. I hate that word. But I ignored it for the story because Frank is just so goddamn lovable.
I didn't want to faint and have people struggle to lift me. It was like Mary reached into the banished recesses of my mind and saw what I thought unconsciously. For once, the MC's inability to accept his attractiveness didn't come off as grating, it was believable. When the Jins and Jorys playacted their false modesty of their appearances I always wanted to reach into their books and shake them. Bitch, you're hot stuff and you know it, own that shit.
Cael was also a breath of fresh air. He reminded me a lot of Raphael from Sinnerman. The ending of this book was pretty surprising. I didn't like the ficlets as they ended up making me want more. This book deserves to be a full length novel or at the very least a sequel. It's also a freebie, so get to claiming it.
Well, more like a no. The story is interesting, the characters are great. The storytelling is rather poor. I don't understand what happened here and why this book has such high ratings. To be honest, I love the author, even though I've only read one other book by her, but I loved that one so much that I absolutely have to read more of her books. But this one is rather awkward. It reads as if an editor went through it with a pair of scissors and randomly cut out entire passages. I love a poetic approach in my romantic books; I'm a fan of it when not everything is perfectly written out and super linear. But with this story, I got something more like whiplash. There are strange jumps from one sentence to the next that don't make sense to me. Just when I had settled in and was enjoying the story, there would be a twist or a leap in time and suddenly everything was different. On top of that, there's a lot of info dumping, which I'm not a fan of. The plot was good but much too rushed. And in the version I read, there were numerous additional stories, like a kind of multiple epilogue. Which was nice, but got on my nerves after a while. Three stars for a super cute demon who does everything for Frank. And for the beautiful passages on body positivity.
“I want to feed you and watch you enjoy it. I want to see you drink wine and eat cake and taste you when you’re done. You’re the most sensual creature I’ve ever met in all my time, and you’re going to deny yourself the bounty of life?” 🤩
I hadn't read a Mary Calmes book in a long while so I forgot how good her writing was. This was a pleasant re-introduction.
The main book was novella length and I absolutely enjoyed it. It was so well set up for such a short book I was impressed. Frank gave Cael a run for his money and I enjoyed every moment of it till they got their HEA.
The additional stories after they got together further solidified their HEA and made me love them even more.
This was such a great read and went a long way in helping me to get my reading mojo back!
Edit!! It looks like I did read this when it was originally released. I did not remember it at all! So, still brand new, ha!
Sort of Jason and Varic but with patience.
I don't know how this one got missed but I'm glad it did. I feel getting to read the updated version with the extras was definately the way to go. *** New Edition with some extras.
Still an enjoyable read. The ficlets at the end were great as we got to see what happened with guys after the HEA, especially how Cael developed
4 stars Enjoyable story with the fic bits that give us a little extra at the end. I enjoyed Frank and the fact that he was perfect, he was overweight and also struggled with the fact that Cael actually wanted him. His friendship with Charming was entertaining to read
A wonderful short novel. I liked that though this was a fated mate story, we still saw (retroactively) the ML's fall for each other. And that Frank was Plus size.
Rating: 4 stars I received this short story for free and as I was reading, I realized that I had read it before. So while enjoyable, it wasn’t the most memorable story by Ms. Calmes.
The original version of this book that was in Creature Features was great, but I love it even more with all the extra stories attached (you can get everything together for free on Prolific Works). It’s so fun to see the possessive ancient demon living in domestic bliss.
This was free (re-edited and new cover) on Prolific recently (posted in her reader group). It's kind of random and follows the typical OTT formula Mary is so well known for. Entertaining for sure, realistic not so much lol.
Ok so I listened to the audiobook of Creature Feature that has the main story in and not the ficlets.
I loved this story when I first read it, but now I think I'm going to drop my rating to 3 stars. I won't even comment on Jeff Gelder's narration, I'm not a fan!
I was really excited when I first read this because of Frank not being a perfect specimen of man but oh so blind that his milkshake was bringing all the boys to his yard. But no Frank is big with love handles and he works out so that some of it will be muscles. Cael is a demon, an incubus, so yeah he is perfect.
Half of the story is about them getting together and that is semi-good. I say semi because Cael knows and has told Frank that he is his mate, the one made for him, but Frank, like every person with body image issues, can't believe it 'cos how can a beautiful person like a fat one? And that is believable and relatable, what I found frustrating was the fact that Frank not only wasn't listening to Cael but rarely let him talk to explain.
The other half was Frank introducing us to his story and about 5-6 whatever characters and the effing annoying lil sister of Frank's that because she didn't write off Frank after coming out, like the rest of his family did, he let her walk all over him and use him and talk to him with a way I'd have huge row with my siblings if they ever talked to me like that.
So yeah 3 stars, which are more like 2.5 stars rounding up.
This is entertaining, funny, fast paced and very Mary Calmes. It's also messy, unpolished and rushed. I loved the beginning, but in the end I felt like this is more like a sketch or a first draft - of a great story, no doubt, but not fully formed yet.
As usual we're thrown right into the middle of it from the start and then get background information as we go. This tends to work great, but in this case there is a whole new world with demons and shifters, vampires and weres and the works, all with cultural rules and such. That's all great and I lapped up all the information we get, but I would have needed more time to really get a feel for all that. As it is, it felt chaotic to me.
Also this story is rather short, so obviously things happen fast. And this is amplified by the addition of several short ficlets at the end - each starting in the middle of things, then explaining the same background again, all only very loosely connected in plot. I think I would love this as a full book, but the chopped style of these bits and pieces annoyed me a lot.
I really enjoyed this story about Frank and Cael. I especially liked that Frank was thick and soft and not an adonis. However, there were a few things that dragged this down for me. While I really appreciated Frank being a big boy, I grew tired of the constant references to it and Frank commenting he is trying to lose weight. That implied that he didn’t meet that false standard of perfection and that he had to change himself to reach it. I also didn’t like the way the story ended kind of abruptly; then followed by a series of shorter stories, each jumping forward in time. To me, it broke the flow of the story and pulled me out of it. And I found it rather annoying that in each of the mini stories, we had to suffer another repeat of explanations such as James being called Charming, Cael’s Earthly names, and the whole bit about Frank’s weight nd how Cael saw him. I also can’t help wonder about the cover. It very nice but how does it relate to the contents of the story? Cael was described, many many times, as having long flowing blonde hair. Not apparent in the cover art.
I loved both Frankie and Cael, a human and a demon! The depth of Cael's love for Frankie and the lengths and power he would use to protect him was swoon-worthy. I loved the short stories after the main one, and I would definitely want to see more stories with these guys!
This was a bit of a hot mess. The usual Calmes data dump was tedious. I hated Frank's sister. She was just using him and he was a total sucker about it. Had to skim as I was pretty bored overall. Calmes really needs a solid editor or two.
This isn’t exactly the version I read, but close enough 😂 Love this novella and the ficlets were a great addition. I read the original release of ‘Landslide’ in ‘Creature Feature’ but I think this new edition has a little more oomph!
