Stay: Discovering Grace, Freedom, and Wholeness Where You Never Imagined Looking

Rate this book
As women, we are exhausted. Our hearts are being wrung out to dry--squeezed and yanked in every direction. We take care of everyone but ourselves. We've gotten lost in bedtime routines and our Costco lists. We have lost our voices in the storm of everyday life. We need to be reminded to reach inward and heed the quiet voice whispering, Stay.

This book is for anyone who longs for a connection with God and his people but can't seem to escape the haunting feelings of guilt, shame, loneliness, and fear. Through raw, authentic stories, (in)courage writer Anjuli Paschall invites you to stop running from your pain and to recognize that the deep end of your story is the way to intimacy with Christ. Alongside Anjuli, you will encounter a loving God who invites you to stay with him at the table of your soul, where you are free to spill the milk, to fumble through your words, to embrace the awkwardness and the joy, and to taste and see that he is good.

This was such an interesting read. I love reading non fiction books that I can connect with the topic and the person sharing stories. Paschall was like sitting with a friend listening to her stories. I just drank in everything she had to say. It was a little bit much on the preachy said. But then again it is a Christian book. So you are going to read about God on every page.
I gave this book 4 stars.

This book is much more a memoir than one containing a good deal of teaching. It's a book for younger women who like insights drawn from experiences rather than from the Bible. Paschall shares stories such as meeting the Dalai Lama in San Francisco, her experiences with a therapist, having difficult discussions, etc. She is very introspective of her experiences and draws spiritual insights from them.

This book is a good example of journaling and the lessons one can learn from the practice. At times I felt like I was reading Paschall's journal as she experienced life or thought about past events. Readers who face internal struggles will appreciate her accounts of her own battles with insecurity, regret, shame, failure, acceptance, guilt, and more.

Paschall invites her readers to be real and vulnerable. To not cover up the questions, the discontent. And most of all, to stay and not run away. She writes, “I can't reconcile a good God with the evil in the world. I can't. I can't make sense of God's sovereignty in a world of suffering. I can only do one thing. I can be in the waiting.” (150)

Many Christians have understood their purpose in life is to glorify God, based on 1 Cor. 10:31. Paschall has a different take. “My one and only purpose in life is to be loved by God.” (202)

This book is good for young people and those who like spiritual insights derived from personal experience. It is also a good example of potential writers who would like to have their “pain have a voice...” (201) Older Christians who grew mature on teaching directly from the Bible like I did, may not be as excited about this book.

Discussion questions are included for reflection and discussion.

I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher. My comments are an independent and honest review.

Update: I just received my copy in the mail last week!!! So excited that I now have my own copy to keep!! I am rereading it- soooo good!

Stay by Anjuli Paschall, is not just an invitation to stay in the presence of God and enjoy a connection that fills up all the aching parts of your body and soul. Chapter by chapter, Paschali shares stories of her own miseries and embarrassments....times where she was so lonely and wanted to fit in more than anything. She also shares encounters and experiences where she was able to just let the world go, embrace the presence of God and take that into her daily life.

What I loved: A quick read, Stay reads more like a journal at times than a self help Christian book. I like the tone and pace that Paschali uses. I can so relate to the addiction to being needed. Ooooh months and months of therapy, and I still walk the line with this one.

Table of Contents includes invitations. I like the way this author words her subtexts for each chapter. There is an invitation to stay, to be an outsider, to make mistakes, to neediness, to vulnerability, to your loneliness, to feel pain,to listen, to break and surrender, to sit in the weeds, to hurt for home, to see, to fear, to embarrassment, to scarcity,to wait, to come out of hiding, to hold on, to grow old, to trauma, to bleed, and to be loved. There are also insightful discussion questions that would be great for a Bible Study class., (Also really great for journaling!!!) I have already pre-ordered my own copy of this book to keep... I am also hoping they come out with an Audiobook version!!

Thank you to NetGalley, Anjuli Paschali, and Bethany House Publishers for this temporary, digital advance review copy for me to read and enjoy. As always, my opinions are my own. #Stay #NetGalley

Anjuli’s book was made for such a time as this. “Yes, stay. Stay where you most resist being. This staying is a slow and painful sanctification, and it’s the place where God is growing us.” I read through this book as I entered motherhood in postpartum during a hospital stay. My heart ached to be home. What was worse is my heart ached to be with community, and giving birth during a pandemic doesn’t allow for that. It forced everyone to stay where they were. And for me that meant staying in the discomfort of a hospital to heal. It’s meant staying in my home to shelter. It’s meant finding new ways to forge community and rely on Jesus Christ for support, patience, and healing in this time. And Anjuli’s book has been a guiding light through the messy start to motherhood. A light shining grace and encouraging us to stay... Stay awake to love right where you are.

I received an advanced copy of this book from NetGalley to review.

This is a memoir. It was not marketed as that, so it was a big disappointment to me.

I wanted to give it 1 star because of the following paragraph, but I picked 2 because it did have some redeeming qualities. Her last chapter sums up the whole book. That her whole purpose in life is to be loved by God.

"I have one purpose in life. One. It isn't to glorify God or make disciples. It isn't to be a good mom or wife or friend. My purpose isn't to be enough, to be needed, to be safe, unique, or significant. I'm not required to have all of the knowledge and understanding or enthusiastically engage the world. No, the goal of my life isn't even to find peace or be perfect. My one and only purpose in life is to be loved by God. That's it. It's the foundation, the starting line, first and foremost. My purpose begins with God pursuing me, staying with me, loving me. It's why and how we were created."

That part made me cringe. It made me realize why the rest of the book left me with an uncomfortable feeling. I beg to differ with her interpretation of God and what he wants from us. This revelation to her is the thread the book is built around. It's a book to tell you to stop beating yourself up because you are loved just as you are and have nothing to prove. Which is good, but it leaves out the process of sanctification and self forgetfulness. Eventually God wants us to stop focusing on ourselves so much and focus on him, his love and his purpose. He loves us enough to stop beating ourselves up, BUT he loves us so much that he wants more for us. To stop the cycle, focus on him and become more like him through the process of sanctification. There is freedom from shame in that. It's the difference between conviction and condemning. When we are convicted, it's not that we are bad, but what we are doing isn't good and we need to change. The Holy Spirit uses that to tell us it's time to change and that's a good thing. Condemning says you are a bad person and that is not from God. Too many times in our culture I see the two mixed up. Sadly, this is one of those times.

There were good things. I started to journal and I learned that I need to do that regularly. I was convicted that I need to stop being busy to avoid my issues. On a whole I don't recommend it unless you want to read a memoir on what she realized about herself.

I found this book because of my support for The Moms We Love Club. I appreciate the author’s intent, she clearly desires to draw her readers into a deep, vulnerable and rich relationship with God. I found a few beautifully written nuggets.

Sadly, much of her writing comes across as a humble brag. Although the author struggled with self-acceptance and some unnamed family dysfunction, it is difficult to appreciate her struggles when her family is a close personal friend of the Dali Lama, the author runs a successful photography business and has traveled extensively. Additionally, she was able to take the time and pay for extended therapy.

If you are a young mom, maybe of a younger generation, this book would be much more accessible and you wouldn’t be as I was. To me, a mom from the GenX generation, who did the hard things, applied elbow grease as needed, gritted my teeth and dug in. And this grit was in no way denying God’s Work, it was a joining Him in the work, a falling in step with the Spirit.

I found this book quaint and I want to pat the author on the head and say “bless your heart.” Which is exactly not what she was going for I suppose.

Stay was the deep exhale I didn’t know how much I needed. Anjuli so tenderly, yet boldly reminds us all that we can find just what we need right where we are — if we will just lean into our present a little more openly. What a gift for such a time as this!

It would be unbelievable that this book launched during a worldwide pandemic, except it makes perfect sense that the message Anjuli Paschall was given to share was also given for this exact time in history. Many of my favorite authors and heroines are larger than life, with stories that inspire with their greatness but I’m left only wondering how to apply bits and pieces to my ordinary life. This is someone that seems to know me, has seen into all my darkest corners and shines a light there. She is a friend sitting right there on your living room couch with a cup of coffee, sharing deep truth with courageous vulnerability and wisdom. Her life is extremely relatable to me and so when she speaks the invitations to come out of hiding, stop pretending, and be set free from shame I don’t have to wonder- I know exactly what she means. I’ve heard these same invitations from Jesus but she paves the way to follow her into the light and freedom, and I couldn’t be more grateful for this book at this precise moment in my life.

Anjuli's book STAY is simply beautiful. It breathes life into the weariest of souls. The writing is beautiful, frank and her heart is left transparent on the page. Her vulnerability is an unexpected blessing that allows the reader to consider and feel their own hurts and hardships... after all, we all have things go wrong in our lives and we often carry the baggage around. The invitation to stay in our awkward, hard places is extended and to recognise that it is often just a feeling. Once we have stayed, we can offer our presence and light to others. Anjuli coaches readers, reminding us that staying doesn't have to be a lonely process. In fact she likens it to a place at the table with our loving saviour Jesus. We can stay as long as we like. We are seen. One of the quotes which resounded most with me was "Anxiety is the lighthouse in the storm leading me back to my tender need for God." I had never thought of anxiety as anything positive until reading her words. I'm so grateful for the heart work STAY has done in me. I highly recommend to all christian women.

Another timely book I’ve read during this season. Stay is a new release and couldn’t have come at a more perfect time. If you’ve been following @lovealways.anjuli for any period of time, you know she is passionate about helping women recognize the hard, ugly, and imperfect spots in our lives and stay with them, allowing grace to cleanse us rather than pushing them deeper under the rug. This is what this book is about, walking through several periods of Anjuli’s life when this was especially important and especially difficult to do. She shares the lessons she’s learned and how she allowed herself to be loved by God, and in so doing, learned to love God back. 1 John 4:19 is a verse that feels relevant to the cause of this book: “We love because He first loved us.” And during a time when we are maybe a little more prone to numb the pain, loneliness, and sin away, the practice of staying in those things will help us leave this season of life truly rested and ready for the world.

Thank you to Netgalley and Anjuli Paschall’s Launch Team for giving me easy access to this wonderful book in exchange for an honest review.

I don't know about you, but like many people today, I have my share of disappointment and problems. Sometimes, I want to run far away from it all. Anuli Paschall shares pain and disappointment in her new book, Stay. From the back of the book, "What if Jesus is pulling out a chair and whispering, Stay?" Paschall encourages readers to "sit with God in the table of your soul." In sitting with God, she hopes that we will continue to invite Him in to our mess and to be transformed through it.

Stay is 21 chapters of Paschall sharing both the good things and the hard challenges she has faced in life. She then takes all of those parts of her story and shares how God redeems it all as we live for Him each day sifting all of the parts of the day through Him. She also invites the reader to turn to their own stories to see how God is working in their own lives. As Katherine Wolf shares in the forward, we are invited to be stay in our stories and work through the hard stuff instead of being like the older brother in the Prodigal son story who stayed physically but not spiritually.

I admire Paschall as she shares so openly and beautifully both her heart and her spirit as that is a hard thing for me. She has been hurt by many things in life, from what she has shared, yet she still opened herself up to those around her and to God each and every day--one day at a time. Her stories touched my heart and soul and I want to do similarly as I seek to live each day with Jesus. Yet, this doesn't feel like a self-help book, instead it just feels more like a sharing of stories with a sister in Christ as we sit on the sofa drinking tea together. At the end of the book, there are 3-4 questions for each chapter to consider and discuss. I think Stay would make a good book for small groups or Book clubs to discuss besides reading it on your own.

I received a copy of this book from Bethany House Publishers. All opinions in this review are my own.

I appreciate the message of staying in the hard but I struggled reading this book. There was very little Scripture used with I think was a missed opportunity in the invitation to stay with God. It was very surface level and missed the chance to go deep. Very much a memoir.

There are some questionable theological statements in this book as well.

I received a copy of this book through Netgalley as part of the launch team. Thank you to Netgalley and Anjuli Paschall for giving me early access to this amazing book in exchange for an honest review.

Where do I even begin. This book is truly amazing and it definitely came at the most perfect time where we have needed it most, especially with all of us facing this Coronovirus and being quarantined. I have been reading a couple chapters every night and I have highlighted so many great quotes. Anjuli invites us to stay present, slow down, and grow closer to God. She shares personal experiences and how she overcame them through the presence of God. We all struggle at times with so many things and this book shows that we are not alone and that if we just stand still and allow God to be present in our lives, everything will be okay. Anjuli makes you feel as if you are right there with her having a cup of coffee. She is very real and honest. I cannot wait to finish reading this book and for it to be released into the world.

Stay: Discovering Grace, Freedom, and Wholeness, Where You Never Imagined Looking by Anjuli Paschall.
The Author invites us into her own personal struggles and loneliness.
She invites us to stay, to make mistakes, to be vulnerable, to surrender.
To stay and allow God to be present in our lives.
One of my favorite quotes:
“No amount of getting, accomplishing, or achieving will ever satisfy the soul. The soul focused on gaining power, influence, and admiration will only grow hungrier. The soul satisfied will be still. It will be free. The real question wasn’t am I successful or failing, but am I walking in faith? Faith to move forward and faith to accept my gifts as offerings to the world around me. Do I trust that I can be me and let God do the rest?”
This is a short read with discussion questions that would make this a great Bible Study. I received advanced copy of this book through NetGallery and the Publisher for my open and honest review.

Stay is a Christian book by (in)courage author Anjuli Paschall. I believe the author’s purpose of writing this book is to inform. The central idea is finding God right where you are.

The thoughts I came away with are: We don’t have to be people-pleasers, God our Creator made all of us different, we each worship uniquely, and we spread the gospel uniquely.

I recommend this book to any woman who feels the need to people-please or they feel they aren’t enough. Above all, God wants a relationship with all of us even with our messy lives. He’s calling us to stay. So, grab your cuppa and stay awhile. Be encouraged. I read an ARC of this book.

“Stay”.... how appropriate In a time like this. The COVID19 virus has essentially forced many of us to stay home during the launch of this book which I expect to be absolutely beautiful! Following this author on Instagram has truly helped me get through many days, especially days recently forced to stay home with my two boys. It is so comforting to know that I am not the only mom in this world who has struggles and doubts. I frequently turn to God, praying and finding peace knowing He is always with me. This author has the most beautiful Instagram posts. So true, so deep, and so relatable. Looking forward to getting back into stores after this virus has passed... Target especially to buy this book!

Have you ever felt alone in the mess of motherhood? Have you ever felt like you were the only one struggling with something? Have you ever felt like you were too far gone to be redeemed? This is your book, sister. This is my book. This book is for all who yearn to not feel the burdens of disappointment or what we are lacking. With a newfound perspective, Anjuli invites us alongside her to “Stay.” To stay in the mess, the pain, the shame, the frustrations, the joy, the hurt. “We must let the truth of our hearts rise to the surface and accept those wobbly places within us. Christ brings wholeness when the inside of us and the outside of us merge and become one.” Thank you Anjuli for sharing your heart, your life, and bringing the truth of who God is to the surface as we learn to “Stay.”

What a gorgeous, soul-soothing book. For me, this story held the sort of message that reaffirms that I’m right where I need to be…so stay. Reading Anjuli’s words felt like making a new, wise friend who just gets it, gets me, gets the inner workings of a woman’s heart. Her words were vulnerable, soul-bearing, deep, and encouraging. She has this sort of big sister type tone that makes you feel like you can share openheartedly and talk poetically about the intricacies of life and love, but also just hang out, be yourself, trade a few recipes, and swap suggestions for the best mascara. It’s like you can learn from her without being taught by her. I loved my time spent reading this book and found it refreshing and settling. It’s funny how one little word, one little message, can be so powerful and transformative. Stay was that for me. Such a timely read to sink a little deeper into gratitude, contentment, grace, wholeness, and presence 😌

I am only partially through Anjuli's book and I can't wait to read more.

When life gets hard I have a tendency to just make myself busier so that I don't have to deal with it. Now I'm a mother to 3 little ones under 5 and it's tough, especially in today's world. Anjuli's writing puts to words feelings that I couldn't even name myself. Stay invites us to not run away when things are hard, but to feel what is being brought up and allow for the growth that could come from it. I'm so grateful for her bravery and willingness to be honest about her struggles and how she found her way through them.

If you struggle with a connection between knowing that God loves you but really feeling that love, this book is for you. If prayer has been dry, lacking or even if you just feel overwhelmed by life and don’t even know where to start when talking to God, this book will gently guide you back to Him. Anjuli has a beautiful way of holding your hand, sitting beside you as a friend, and pointing you back to Jesus. Back to the one who truly loves you more than you could ever know, loves you despite all the flaws, mistakes, snd insecurities that you cling to. Read this and find your way back to sharing your deepest areas of your heart with the father who wants all of you.

To be honest, I have about 10 books piled on my nightstand that I’ve wanted to read. I’ve felt guilty for buying them in hopes to help me along this journey of motherhood. When I started reading Stay it felt different. I was swept away in the emotion and feeling of every written word. You can tell this is a real, open honest conversation. It moved my heart and also lifted the pressures I had begun to put on myself. Anjuli has a very special gift God has given her and I’m honored that she is sharing it with all of us. Must read!

Anjuli is a master storyteller. The way she weaves her words into stories that make you feel connected to her and the purpose God has for your life is inspiring and life giving. Her invitation to stay in the moment, and in what you are feeling and what God is doing is so needed right now and in our world. So blessed to have the opportunity to read such a gift of a book.

Stay is one of those books you could read over again every single year! It is one of the most raw, honest, heart on paper kind of books. It’s a place where your heart is opened to meet God in the midst of your beautiful and messy story. I am already eager to read it again with people I love, then by myself, and then again. The message is something we need to preach to ourselves over and over in every season. This is a must read!!

Anjuli has perfectly captured God’s desire for us as women to STAY in our emotions. To allow them to become part of us and part of our journeys. We no longer need to wrestle or fight or push down the emotions that we’ll up inside us. But rather let them pulse through us. In that there is freedom. STAY is a book I will read and re-read and re-read for years and years to come simply to allow God’s truth to breathe life into me over and over as many times as I need. Thank you, Anjuli, for allowing God to use you in such a tangible and needed way.

I'm currently reading Stay, and it is so timely with everything happening in the world right now. My personality is one of action that tends to avoid all the feelings. Anjuli's gentle yet persistent encouragement to stay with the messy and ugly feelings, and inviting Jesus to speak into them, is exactly what I need. Stay is the message everyone's heart needs to hear, not only in the daily mundane, but especially in the uncertainty and chaos surrounding us.

This book speaks to women is all walks of life who are sisters in Christ! It especially speaks to my momma-heart of three young boys. Anjuli has a way of writing that makes you feel seen. Seen in the loneliness and so very relatable. She constantly points us back to the cross, back to the goodness of the Lord, to rely on Him and stay in his goodness even when it feels so far. Love love love! Thank you for authoring this book!

This was such an encouraging and uplifting read! I instantly felt like I was friends with Anjuli and was sitting over coffee with her as she shared all the ways God has made Himself present in her life. I loved it from beginning to end.

And funny story: I came across this book randomly at an airport and, to be honest, chose it because I loved the cover 😂 this was definitely one of those times where judging a book by its cover paid off.

An invitation to remember that you’re not alone. A challenge to stay when things get hard. An encouragement to see all the ways God is working in the midst of your hardest moments. Anjuli beautifully and vulnerably shares her heart through this book in a way that makes you want to keep flipping through the pages until you’ve read it all.

Stay is such an encouraging book that offers readers a truly personal glimpse into one believers hurts and struggles and how she “stays” in the hard and meets the beautiful everlasting love of the Lord. She bravely shares personal things that we all face but as Christian believers we rarely dare to talk about.
