Seeing yourself as God sees you is essential to overcoming your deepest struggles, having healthy relationships, living in freedom, and fulfilling your life purpose. Yet most of us look at ourselves with warped mirrors, believing lies that lead to shame, guilt, fear, insecurity, and spiritual stagnation. The lies of our past keep us stuck, struggling with the same issues and habits for years. But according to the first three chapters of Ephesians, that's not how God sees us at all.
Pastor and author Chip Ingram wants to open your eyes to your true self, the "new you" that God sees, the person who is immeasurably valuable and beautiful. In this Scripture-soaked book, he shows you how getting God's perspective
- satisfies your search for significance - undoes your shame - makes you secure - frees you from comparing yourself with others - helps you discover your calling - and more
Are you ready to see yourself as God sees you? Then let Chip Ingram show you how to silence the lies of your past and experience your true identity.

This book was published not a moment too soon. It is one if the most affecting, memorable, and helpful writings I have read regarding the access we humble followers have to the personal, intimate power of Christ. In my opinion, it is a great companion to Mark Driscoll's book, "Who Do You Think You Are?", which I also happened to finish recently. As in Mark's book, the testimonies woven throughout are beautiful and inspiring; and the insights are incredibly valuable, as are you, the one reading this.
I do enjoy Chip Ingram’s work. But with this one I felt very unmotivated to finish it. I DNF’d it once last year and thought I would give it one more chance again this year. I got a little farther this time but I couldn’t bring myself to finish it. I do agree with many of the points that Chip brings up in this book (the 75% of it that I did read). While reading this book I did find the explanations of each point to be very basic. I understand the need for books like this because a new Christian may need a simpler explanation of the new person that they have become and are becoming from believing in God. It’s also good to read books like this so that you can better explain your beliefs in a way that most people can understand. I found that with this book in particular, I wasn’t retaining the information I was reading. For me, reading Discover Your True Self re-affirmed that I better retain information pertaining to Christianity when I read books that go into specific details. This book does not go into specific details and I don’t think this book was intended to do that. I am giving this book 2 ⭐️ not because of the information that it provides but simply because I tried reading it twice and couldn’t finish it either time.
This book was received as an ARC from Baker Books in exchange for an honest review. Opinions and thoughts expressed in this review are completely my own.
I was waiting for a book like this. Our self-help collection is very popular at our library and our community asks all the time if there are any books like Discover Your True Self and now I can say that there will be some released. I loved how intricate the details were on defining your purpose and how it is important to say to yourself that you are worth it and God has a plan for you. We get so caught up in all of the conflict and drama that we disconnect with the fact that God has a plan for us and to trust in Him. I know a lot of our community will benefit from this book and I can't wait to share it with them.
We will consider adding this title to our Self-Help collection at our library. That is why we give this book 5 stars.
In one word, I’d describe this book as beautiful. The book is easy to read, filled with scriptural truths, and follows a progression that led me on a journey into my heart. All of us struggle. If you’re human, you will mess up and you will likely doubt God, yourself, life, others, everything, at some point. This book is foundational to learning, knowing, feeling, and living out the truth of how God sees His children. Using Ephesians chapters 1-3, Chip helped me know who I truly am in God’s eyes. Loved, wanted, valuable, and purposeful. Isn’t that beautiful? I encourage anyone in any stage of life, struggling with big or small issues (or not!), to read and embrace these truths about the depth and richness of God’s love for us and His plan for our lives. Honestly, I can’t wait to read it again and slowly pour over the love of God that flows from the pages. Thanks, Chip and team.
Discover Your True Self is a book that will encourage, enlighten, and prompt self reflection while establishing a deep connection with scripture. I highly recommend this book for anyone who has gotten lost in believing false narratives about yourself or who have tried to find their identity in anything or anyone other than God. The truths that Chip Ingram shares remind you to see yourself through God’s eyes instead of through friends, family, media, or modern day culture. This book is easy to read and very engaging with a lot of relevant examples. Discover Your True Self is easily a book that you will want to read again and again.
Personally, I struggle to accept myself. As I was aware that my sins broke God’s heart and is still continuing until now, I have also a difficulty of asking God to still forgive me from those sins. But in this book, it reminds me that our God authored our identities as His sons and daughters and He’s absolutely committed to helping us find it. He wants us to journey with Him even we’re struggling in this life, because He alone can fill the void within our hearts. This book unpacks the meat of God’s Word. 🤍🥰🙏🏻
This book is a life changing book! It brought true meaning to my life. When I began reading the first chapter I could literally see my past flash before me and I sobbed during the first two hours of reading this book. l didn't want to stop reading it. Thank you Chip and I give praise and glory to God for giving you the gift of teaching others and giving them new hope in their lives.
I have never read a self help book before. I wanted to read something that would help me see myself in a different light & also reconnect with my faith. I found this very interesting & easy to read. It is a page turner. This book came to me at the perfect time. I love the real life examples & quotes of scripture. Definitely a great book.
I have never read a bible commentary that so thoroughly explained how to apply the truths of Scripture into a beliver's thoughts and actions. I don't mean to sound cliche' but this book is truly a " game changer ". And I would add that the video teaching series on Chip's Living on the Edge website has been extremely helpful. Give it a try!
