Anyone But Me: 10 Ways to Overcome Your Fear and Be Prepared to Share the Gospel

Rate this book
Fear is the primary reason we fail to share the gospel with our friends, family, and coworkers. We're afraid of looking weird or out of touch. We're afraid we won't have the right answers to their questions. We're afraid that if they reject the gospel, they're really rejecting us. We don't want to make things awkward or strain our relationships. So we say nothing because our discomfort feels bigger than our loved ones' ultimate destination if they remain outside of the body of Christ. We know it's not, but it's just so hard to get over our fear.

Apologist Ray Comfort can help. In Anyone but Me, he shows you how to overcome your fears by developing ten critical, biblical characteristics so that you can confidently share the message of salvation with those you care about most. If you've been longing to see a dear friend, family member, or coworker come to Christ, now is the time to begin becoming the faithful witness they need. Because we never know how much more time we will have to proclaim God's good news.

Review of “Anyone But Me” by Ray Comfort
Picture a majestic sailing ship in the harbor, beautiful to see, and a heart-thrill to any sailor. But it’s sitting still, barely drifting with the tide. It should be driving swiftly through the waves, covering miles at maximum knots. What’s wrong? Simple. The captain failed to give the command to unfurl and hoist the sails!
If that’s the status of your witnessing efforts, “Anyone But Me,” by Ray Comfort is for you. Comfort draws from the love of his heart for God and for lost, hell-bound people to write a rapid-fire, Spirit-led call to share the Law and the Gospel with the lost around us. And he calls us to unfurl and hoist what I picture as ten sails, that the Holy Spirit will fill to move us out of our lazy harbors of complacency into the oceans of darkness of our world.
These ten sails are the ten chapters of his book. This book is challenging to read, but each chapter clearly shows that this, this witnessing, is doable by any believer of Jesus!
I urge you to pre-order before, or order on, May 5th this new addition to Ray’s over 90 books, all designed to equip Christians and the church to obey the Great Commission!
Disclaimer: I received a digital copy of this book to review and give my opinion before its May 5th scheduled publication. No compensation was involved.

GK Chesterton said a quote I like, “The Christian ideal has not been tried and found wanting. It has been found difficult; and left untried.” In Ray Comfort's new book, Anyone but Me, Ray goes after one aspect of the Christian ideal that is left untried in many Christian's life, that of evangelizing. There are many examples of Ray's witnessing encounters through the highways and byways of California. Through these, he introduces the Gospel in a very non-threatening way, that causes the interviewee to open up and talk of eternal things. Ray's patented, (if not, it should be) use of "The Good Person test", causes the person he is talking to, to think about their sin. This is something that is not talked about in the majority of churches today. I love the idea of the $5 Subway card used in the book, and plan on utilizing that myself. I heartily recommend this book for any youth group that needs to get excited about witnessing and to the congregant in the church, who is complacent to merely sit on the pew.

I have watched a lot of Ray Comforts youtube videos. They were awesome. This book is also awesome thank you Ray Comfort for letting me read and commentate first. I really liked reading this book. It helps to know that people who are Christians have some issues with evangalizing. I need lots of prayer to overcome the fear and for Jesus to give me the knowledge and strength to be able to witness for him. I believe this world needs more evangalist like Ray Comfort and Kirk Cameron to start an uprising to bring the world to Jesus. I have read the whole book and i believe if you read it. It will touch your heart. Like it did mine.

This was an amazing book. If you are wanting to either start or improve how you share the Gospel, this book is for you. If you are unfamiliar with Ray Comfort and Living Waters, take a look at Ray’s YouTube interviews, but everyone should read this book. While reading, I found myself evaluating my motives and my focus, which you actually should want. It also really motivated me to come up with a plan and practice. Pretty much all my questions that I had from watching the interviews were answered. God bless!

While I have watched a few of Ray Comfort’s videos, this is the first time I’ve read one of his books. It is a book packed with a lot of Scripture (though he uses quite a few versions) and a lot of examples from his own ministry. It definitely gives a lot of ideas to help Christians know how to witness in different circumstances and is a convicting read.

I almost hate to point out things I find against a book like this, because his gospel message is Biblically sound and I believe his heart is in the right place. However, two little things: he didn’t really encourage team witnessing or church support. But if you read in Acts (or even the Gospels where Jesus sent His disciples out two-by-two), you’ll see that these are very important. There is not solo-Christian work encouraged in the Bible, but Ray Comfort didn’t clearly mention that (I could have missed it). So, if you just take what you read here and apply it to teams, it is a very good book for ideas and encouragement to get into more active witnessing.

*I received this book from the publisher and happily provided my honest review*

I’ve been listening and reading Ray Comfort for about three years now. There are two things that I can say with certainty about him: he loves people, and he’s extremely humble. In this book, Ray gives his audience tips and helpful advice that he’s acquired over his years of sharing his faith. If you are a Christian who is hesitant to share your faith, please read this book. You won’t be disappointed that you did.

I am up to page 1057 of 2351 in the Kindle app and it has greatly encouraged me (based on Scripture) to evangelize people who I don't know if saved or not. Ray's own experiences of failure have helped me, understanding with detail how even the greatest evangelist of our present time makes mistakes, and that I and any Christian is not immune to doing poorly at times for whatever reasons they may be. It has been a godly counsel of literature that has helped properly re-focus my evangelism efforts, praise the Lord!

Anyone But Me is a simple, but mighty, book. Ray makes the case as to why every believer has the responsibility to “be fishers of men” and boldly suggests that those who have no desire to do so, may not actually be saved at all. If you ever needed a kick in the pants to fulfill the great commission, along with a good ol’ dose of encouragement, this book delivers. Ray tackles love, obedience, fear, and always brings it back to a rather encouraging thought: we aren’t to stress about debating theology or convincing people of the identity of Jesus. We are sent simply to share the truth of the gospel sharing the law which is what convict’s the heart, thereby preparing the heart to receive the gospel of salvation by grace. Without having an understanding of sin, the message of the cross is foolishness.

Ray’s anecdotes are vivid and do an excellent job at grabbing our attention as to the role we have as believers to warn those around us that they are in danger of hell. Would you let anyone (friend or stranger) go for a drive in a car without brakes? NO! If you did, even in the human court of law, you would be considered a murderer. And yet we often let people careen out of control headed straight for hell, not even alerting them to the danger ahead. As Ray says, “If we don’t have love that weeps at the state and fate of sinners, all of our giving, all of our theology, all of our professed worship isn’t worth a hill of pharisaic beans.” And friend, in case you think it’s good enough just to “love on them” with your own peace/joy/happiness, I have to ask: is it truly loving someone if you never warn them of the cliff they are about to fall off? Wouldn’t you be upset if your friend never told you about the cliff?

I’ve been following Jesus for many decades and found this a difficult read (in the most delightful sense). Not because the book was hard to understand, but because Ray’s simple message rang loud and clear. I found myself both deeply introspective of the state of my own faith, as well as convicted and spurred to action. Being made aware of your shortcomings can be difficult, but I will forever be grateful. With that said, I do believe that this simple book will speak volumes to the unbeliever as well as the long time saint, and be a repeated source of encouragement for both.

Before I conclude, I have just one question for you: Are you a good person? Have you ever lied, stolen, used God’s name in vain, or lusted? If you have done these things, you’ve broken God’s law and God sees you as a lying, thieving, blasphemous adulterer at heart. The Bible warns us that one day God will punish you in a terrible place called hell. But He is not willing that any should perish. As a sinner, you have broken God’s law and the debt has to be paid. Jesus paid our debt in full with his death on the cross. This means that God can legally dismiss your case: “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.” The Bible then tells us that then Jesus rose from the dead, defeating death! Friend, you might be in a car without brakes, or you’re standing with your toes over a cliff never knowing when someone will send you tumbling to your death. You could die after you read this. So today, now, repent and trust Jesus and God will give you eternal life as a free gift. Then read the Bible daily and obey what it says. God will never fail you, but all else will.

This is the best book I've read on overcoming fear and being prepared to share the gospel with family, friends, strangers, anyone who needs to hear the truth and power of the gospel. I must admit that I am not as bold and as much of a go-getter as Ray is, but I found this book so practical and helpful in guiding me more in that direction.

This quote really spoke to my heart: "But in our ignorant zeal, we can sometimes cause damage to the gospel. We must remember that without God's help, we can do nothing. All of our pleadings are nothing but dead words if the Holy Spirit doesn't bring them to life. So we must do everything in prayer. We pray before we present the gospel, we are prayerful while we speak, and we pray after we conclude, because we know that salvation is of the Lord. Every time we open our mouths for the kingdom of God, we are exercising trust - faith that God will take our words and drive them home to the sinner's conscience."

At the end of the day, it's not about me, my words, my deeds, my fear, my shortcomings, my desire to be comfortable, etc. I must exercise my faith in the one true God and trust that He will guide me on the path of leading people to Him. I must do my part, and trust that God will do His part. My part is simply to take people through the moral law (Ten Commandments) so that they will understand why they need a Savior. Jesus is Good News! He is the way out of our sin and death. Ray's book makes it easy to understand the best way to explain the need for salvation and guides those of us who are too much in our heads, and not enough in our hearts, to share this amazing news with others. Great read!

This book was amazing! extremely encouraging and really did help me overcome my fear to share in sharing the Gospel. ❤️ whenever I read it it made me want to do nothing but that which would benefit in eternity. It taught me about the importance of prayer and how we need God’s help especially to untie our tied tongues. It helped equip me with the armor of God and showed me the importance of that armor and how we need it to fight the enemy (which is not flesh and blood but the devil) and how we are not to be fighting against the unbelievers but for them! And how we should not give our pearls (the gospel) to the unsaved with our first explaining the law and we broke it and that will reveal to them that they are sinners and it will make them realize the need a Savior and that’s when we give them the pearls because they are ready to accept it. But don’t give up on those who don’t accept Jesus right away don’t mark them off as unsavable for if Saul can be saved anyone can! Plant a seed and then pray for the Lord to make it grow, see sinners as saints imagine them being saved and how amazing their testimony will be! Don’t hide your light but let it shine!
People are dying from suicide more than ever right now but you can help prevent that by showing them their disease (their sin) but then giving them the cure of salvation and that will give them something to live for! We must be prepared to share the Gospel not just prepared but out there ready to serve listening and watching and praying for an opportunity to share the truth.

God bless you and may He fill you with His boldness and eyes to look ahead over the things of this world ❤️❤️❤️

I have heard many people criticize Ray for using the Law too often and I've even heard criticism that his apologetic skills aught to be sharper for a man calling people to faith in Christ on a daily basis, but what I absolutely love about Ray is that HE DOES IT. He actually goes out and fulfills the great commission.
Ray does the thing that every born-again Christian knows they aught to be doing-- making a point to share the gospel message with every creature. And in this book he shows how he doesn't overcomplicate things or make it about a battle of the intellect, he simply attempts to illuminate people's understanding of their own sin, and he honors God by trusting the power of the gospel message.
Ray also highlights the importance of having the right attitude before God and toward men. He highlights the need of humility and faith before God, and gracious and sincere concern for others.
Ray gives many practical examples of how to make fulfilling the Great Commission a natural part of your everyday lifestyle, and it has been incredibly encouraging for me because it comes from a man who I believe has already applied every word written in this book to his character through prayer and fasting.

I love you, Ray, and I may never meet you until eternity when we're together before the throne of our God and Savior, but I must say I am truly grateful for the influence you have had in my life and ministry simply through your taking seriously the extent of the Grace of God.

I have read several of Ray Comfort's books. This one stands out as especially relatable and candid. Ray details the traits or habits that a Christian must cultivate in order to be a good witness to a dying world. He doesn't suggest that his reader muster up these traits by sheer willpower, and he isn't twisting our arm. He emphasizes that we must ask God to instill these traits in us, trust Him to do so, and then go out and get busy!
He shares examples and stories from his own experience and plenty of Scripture to illustrate each point. Even more than his other books, this one felt like a close and fervent conversation. Our time here on earth is short and we don't have any guarantees of future witnessing opportunities. We have today. Today is the day of salvation!
I was personally very encouraged to grow in my reliance on the Lord to keep on proclaiming the gospel whenever I can. I was convicted that fear of failure or ridicule are not valid excuses when the souls of my fellow humans are at stake.

Being very transparent I will say up front that I have taught the Way of the Master evangelism courses, Basic and Intermediate, to a number of groups. That being said I have a great deal of respect for Ray Comfort and have read a number of his books and believe his teachings on evangelism to be both biblical and simple to put into practice. In "Anyone but Me" Ray addresses what the 10 most important factors that should motivate Christians, all Christians, to have an evangelistic mindset in our everyday walk in life. Ray drives home what I believe to be the most important factor and that is a Christ driven love for the lost and perishing. We MUST have the same desire for the lost as our Father in heaven and that is that we should desire that none should perish but that ALL should come to repentance and be saved through Christ. Another point in this book the Ray does very well is that he gives personal testimony about his encounters in sharing the gospel with people he meets on the streets. Ray also is very open when he tells about those encounters that did not come out like he had hoped. However the point the Ray drives home is that even when those we are giving the gospel to get angry we must 1) Keep our cool and 2) remember that we are seed planters and let the Holy Spirit do the convicting. The last point about the book that I believe can not be overstated is that ANYONE, who has a love for the lost, CAN do this through prayer and in the power of the Holy Spirit. I believe that this book can equip and encourage the Christian that is willing to step out their comfort zone and let God work through them and see the power of the Gospel accomplish what God does through you to the glory of the Lord Jesus Christ!

If you are searching for motivation, means, and the method for sharing your faith, you will want to read this book. In it, Ray Comfort gives Biblical resources for witnessing to others; he provides motivation--”let compassion for the lost swallow your fear of rejection”; and he illustrates how to talk to a person’s conscience, using the Law (10 Commandments) to bring awareness and conviction of sin, and then presents the Gospel (the Good News of how Jesus lived a perfect life in our place, took the punishment that we deserved, and paid the penalty in full for our sin). Ray uses personal accounts and stories to illustrate his points, doing so in a winsome way with humility and humor. This is a wonderful, beneficial book--I highly recommend it!

Ray Comfort is a prolific writer and at times you may wonder which one of his books to read. This book is where you should start. Full of useful information, scriptures and anecdotes for evangelizing or witnessing to people, sharing the gospel of Jesus Christ.

Ray has an endearing way of writing; you can really feel his love and enthusiasm for his subject spilling forth from the pages. It is warm, encouraging yet also serious and direct in ensuring the reader knows of the importance of sharing the gospel at every opportunity. I also really liked the use of Ephesians, chapter by chapter, using the scripture regarding the full Armour of God, giving a sense of purpose, a mission if you will, imploring all soldiers to get into the spiritual battle, overcoming the enemy and explaining with simplicity that we have sinned, separated ourselves from God and are deserving of punishment, specifically hell. Yet our great and merciful Creator God, sent Jesus, His only begotten son who lived a sinless life to suffer and die in our place, raised up from the grave and gave us the gift of eternal life.

This is a book I will return to often and recommend to many and keep extra copies to give away in my own witnessing encounters. This book is a must have for anyone who professes a Christian faith.

What a greatly encouraging and practical book on the how-to and the why-to of everyday evangelism. Free of guilt-trips but full of conviction, this short guide helps every Christian to put aside fear by putting on love and exhorts Christians to ground themselves in prayer and God's Word before going into battle. Very readable and Biblical.

Highly recommended for teens and adults; would be great for an adult Sunday School class or small-group Bible study.

This book is a good complement to his other books if you want to learn what Ray experiences when he shares the gospel and what he does to prepare. Consult other Ray Comfort books if you want to learn how to use the law to prepare the heart for the gospel. These are stories behind the conversations with people he finds as he goes around the city.

Anyone But Me: 10 Ways to Overcome Your Fear and Be Prepared to Share the Gospel

-Not the book you expected, but the book you need-
When thinking of Ray Comfort, many people instantly recognize him as the guy from YouTube, or have heard of him through people like Kirk Cameron. This is true, the YouTube channel has given Ray a lot of attention, and that in part is the motivation behind why he wrote Anyone But Me.
If as a Christian, the reader is honest with themselves, they can admit that they may not be the best soul winner. There can be a sundry list of reasons for this. "I don't know the right verses", "what if they reject me?" "I'm not a good speaker,"sound familiar? People always have reasons for being afraid to witness about Jesus Christ. The beautiful thing about Ray's book is that he candidly goes through the process of how he became so good at witnessing to people. He is not shy in recounting his experiences with times he failed to obey the Holy Spirit, and the disappointments that ensued. He does encourage the reader to use them as learning experiences as he had, and see where that situation could have gone differently. This helps the reader because he doesn't place himself on a pedestal above the reader but rather levels with them. This helps the reader because in each of his recounted experiences, you can easily place yourself in a similar situation.
Anyone But Me, takes you on a journey through Christian evangelistic efforts in a way that doesn't make it seem impossible to witness. The center focus that Ray continually expresses is Jesus Christ. The book gives the reader 10 principles to help overcome fear and anxiety in witnessing. Each chapter is full of stories from Ray's personal experiences and in each chapter he gives motivation behind his method, always giving a Scriptural basis behind why a method can be used and how. In chapter 8, Ray tells the readers "If I don't let love have it's way, I stop caring that people are going to hell." This depicts that love is the ultimate motivation for christian witness. Furthering the comfort level of the book, Ray reminds readers in chapter 5 that " The war we fight isn't intellectual; it is moral. It's not carnal, but spiritual, and therefore it has a spiritual solution."
Much like any love relationship, there is always conflict, and this is usually brought about by varying definitions of love. The love that Ray explains, shows the christian love and the spiritual opposition that will occur. In chapter 1 Ray makes this statement: "If you listen to his lies about you being unworthy, unequipped, unintelligent, unhinged, and unprepared, it will undermine your efforts to understand evangelism...the quality is in the seed, not the sower." This book will be an easy read in which you find yourself wanting to dig deeper into evangelism and be challenged into expanding your horizons. By the end of the book instead of saying "anyone but me!" you will be saying "why not me!?!"

Enjoy the book, and may it be a blessing and a challenge to you

Ray Comfort always makes it clear and comprehensive that we need to point people out to the Gospel through the Law, out of our obedience and love for God and love for our fellow human beings about where they will spend their eternity. The book explains these "10 ways to overcome our fear and to prepare ourselves to share the Gospel" thoroughly and practically that we can apply it in any of our Evangelism encounters. It helps me overcome my fear by seeing it from a Biblical perspective.

I always enjoy reading the works of Ray Comfort. He is a master at telling the stories of his witnessing encounters. He tells the story in such a way that you feel that you are standing right beside him during the encounter. I really appreciate the insight that Ray shares with his many years of sharing the gospel. I do believe that this is Ray’s best work yet.

Ray Comfort presents many biblical and practical means with which to start a conversation and steer it toward eternity. He does this while emphasizing genuine love and a burden for the unsaved.

No matter how long someone has been a Christian, this is a valuable and challenging resource to help us live out the great commission in Mark 16 (which all Christian’s are called to heed)

Positive - Loved this book. The biblical applications were spot on. I loved all the ideas to get started. I loved that I didn't feel condemned, only motivated.

Negative - Too many quotes from others (by the end I dreaded seeing Spurgeon's name come up over and over) - I like the Ray stories best.

I was given an advanced copy of “Anyone But Me: 10 Ways to Overcome Your Fear and Be Prepared to Share the Gospel” by Ray Comfort.
I hate this book and am giving it five stars! I need to clarify this statement. I hate this book because it is so good and so true; and that it also reveals that I so often fall short in sharing the Gospel with others. I also must say that I love this book. I love that it speaks truth to both the believer and the unbeliever. It gives helpful insight into how we as believers can overcome our fears and prepare ourselves to share the Gospel.
For those familiar with Ray Comfort, if you have watched one of his videos or read any of his evangelistic books, then you know he utilizes the “Good Person” model of questioning. He asks the individual if he or she is a good person. Almost everyone says they are. Using the 10 Commandments, he asks the familiar questions: “Have you lied, stolen, and lusted?” He uses this line of questioning to help people see themselves as not the good people they had assumed themselves to be. He later asks the person if God judges them by the 10 Commandments, would God send them to heaven or hell? Ray is pricking the conscience of the listener to see that he or she is in trouble with God, so that the Gospel message will be able to do its work. The point is you will hear some familiar points in this book, and that is a good thing.
Like the 10 Commandments, Ray has given 10 ways to overcome our fear of sharing the Gospel and helping us to prepare to share the Gospel. Ray’s 10 ways are to be loving, obedient, decisive, defiant, focused, prepared, truthful, practiced, faithful, and prayerful.
In chapter 1, Ray writes about his experiences of showing love to those who have ridiculed him. After quoting Luke 6:27, he rightly states: “Our unconditional love sets Christians apart from the world and stops the ignorant mouths of evil men.” Over the years, Ray has given gift cards and fruit baskets, and wrote kind notes to his detractors. Ray gives some thoughtful insight into how we as believers can change the way we think and love others, and this also helps us to move forward with sharing the Gospel. Love is foundational for us to be able to share this life-giving message with others.
Ray then goes into being obedient in sharing our faith in Chapter 2. He speaks about Samson’s secret strength, which is not his hair. Like Samson, every believer has the abiding power of almighty God just waiting to be loosed. This chapter helps us to see that we as believers are not alone, and we have the indwelling presence of the Holy Spirit, so we should not fear.
The third chapter is about being decisive in sharing our faith. Strangers almost never come up to us and ask us to share our faith with them. It is important for us to make the conscious decision to share the Gospel, and then go out and do it.
The fourth chapter is about being defiant against the real enemy, the devil. Ephesians 6:11, Put on the full armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. Ray speaks about how seemingly innocuous things such as sleep and well-meaning isolationism can be barriers to sharing our faith. Even well-meaning Christians can be a barrier to doing what Christ has commissioned us to do. We must be defiant, and push forward in telling others about Jesus.
Chapter 5 reminds the reader that we must be vigilant and focused when we speak with others. It is easy to get caught up in chasing rabbits down rabbit holes, or debating issues that divide believers and unbelievers. We must keep our eyes on the cross and exalt the risen Savior.
Chapter 6 is about the believer being prepared and putting on the full or complete armor of God in order to be prepared to stand, defend, and be victorious against the schemes of the devil.
Chapter 7 is about truth - the Gospel truth. The word gospel means good news. Gospel and truth have long been synonymous with one another. As believers, we are admonished by Ray to stand for truth because “the enemy stands for the opposite.” Our enemy is Satan, the father of lies. We will necessarily fight lies with the truth. The Gospel is truth. It is imperative that we preach the all sufficient sacrifice of Christ on the cross, and nothing we do can add to that work. We have been called to salvation in and through Jesus because of his unmerited favor (grace) toward us.
Chapter 8 is about being prepared to share the Gospel. We do that by practicing what we will be sharing with others. Understanding the Gospel message and how we will go about sharing it with others will go a long way in being able to share it. The more we do it, the better we will be in doing it. Sure, we will come across someone who will frustrate us as we try to give them the words of life. However, this is also an opportunity to learn. The truth is that even in situations that frustrate us, God can use the encounter to change the heart of the hearer of the Gospel. Still, these encounters should bring us back to the word of God, so we can seek the Lord’s guidance.
Chapter 9 is the shortest chapter of the book. It is by no means the least of the chapters. It is a call to be and remain faithful in sharing the Gospel with others. Ray reminds us that It is also important to be at peace with others, and to take every opportunity to stop any misunderstandings as soon as possible. We must be careful in our words and deeds.
Chapter 10 reminds us that we need to pray and be prayed for with all kinds of prayer. Study the Bible on a regular basis. Make the most of the time, and look for ways and opportunities within the areas of your influence to share the hope found in Christ alone.
As I come to a close, I must tell you that I actually loved reading this book. I read it over two nights. I saw areas in each chapter where I could improve. Ray has given me some new ideas about how I can go about sharing my faith with others. He has definitely done an excellent job getting his points across. I highly recommend everyone read this book.
