Dannah Gresh, a mother/daughter communication coach, has sold well over three quarters of a million copies of her books—including And the Bride Wore White and 2008's best-selling CBA youth book, Lies Young Women Believe (coauthored with Nancy Leigh DeMoss)—making her one of the most successful Christian authors targeting teens and preteens. With the belief that today's culture has been seeking to rob little girls of their innocence, Dannah has been fighting on the front lines to protect them. Her fun line of Secret Keeper Girl mom/preteen daughter connecting resources and live events that tour the country provide moms with just the right tools to fight back. She has long been at the forefront of the movement to encourage both tweens and teens to pursue purity and is often called upon to defend the conservative position of abstinence in national news media like USA Today, Time, Chicago Tribune, and Women's Wear Daily. She is also a frequent contributor to FamilyLife Today, Midday Connection, and Focus on the Family. Dannah lives in State College, Pennsylvania, with her husband, Bob, and their children, Robby, Lexi, and Autumn, whom the family adopted from China in 2007. She and her husband founded Grace Prep, a new model in Christian high school education, which Bob administrates. She is shamelessly in love with her labradoodle, Stormie. (DannahGresh.com)

Okay Mrs. Gresh. Okay. You know, if it weren't for the fact that I know some of your "information" in your book is either false or wildly misconstrued, you may have swayed me. But that whole thing about Christian teens in Europe group dating to keep off each other...you do realize that there is way more teen sex in Europe than here, right? The difference is they don't have people like you mucking up their education and stopping them from learning about safe sex. Also, you're whole "no meditation" thing is also wrong. Meditation is nothing but reaching into a deeper part of yourself and if you have a problem with that then you shouldn't be giving anyone advice. Also, your story about admitting to your husband you weren't a virgin when you married him and he got all pissy- screw that. I thought one of abstinence's selling points was "you know it's real love" and his storming off just because he was 2nd IS NOT love. Finally ,all your talk of guilt and chemicals attaching you to someone because of even a touch: spare me. I know too many people who can prove otherwise. The guilt those girls felt was sourced in what they'd been taught from young and how their actions contradicted their morals, not the sex itself. That crushing guilt is what I feel when I don't speak out because being quiet is contrary to my beliefs. Having sex before marriage, isn't and if all you got is biased anecdotes and skewed facts then guess what- I ain't buyin'.

This one word is the premise for “What are You Waiting For? The One Thing No one Ever Tells You About Sex,” written by Dannah Gresh. Yada is a Hebrew word that means “to be known, to be deeply respected,” and is the word used when talking about a husband and wife “laying” with each other. It is found more than 900 times in the Bible, and aside from marital relations, it is most commonly found in verses that talk about being known by God. Gresh strives to show us that sex isn’t just an exchange of fluids, but it is “an exquisite revelation of a much greater love,” e.i a picture of our relationship with God.

While reading the first chapters of this book, I was turned off by the sort of “shock jock” literary hooks and emotional chick flick-esque definitions of romance. And so I put my super critical glasses on and prepared to deal with whatever horrible theology was about to be thrown my way. After reading the book in its entirety, I came to the conclusion that the first two chapters should be cut from the book, leaving an age appropriate (written for young adults), challenging, redeeming, truthful in a nutshell exposition on sex.

I loved Gresh’s treatment on counterfit love via “friends with benefits,” as she includes interesting and easily digestable scientific research on hormones and brain functions. I love how she discusses the quest we all have for love, “to be known and respected,” and how the enemy often turns this search into an unsatiable desire for unhealthy love.

“Every man who knocks at the door of a brothel is looking for God.” –G.K Chesterton.

I was encouraged by Gresh’s stance on same sex attraction, as she challenges the reader to replace lies with truth, drag struggles into the light, and get help from fellow Christians. Isn’t that what we are called to do as Christians- admit we are sinners? James 5:16 “Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous man is powerful and effective.” She also talks about pornography and other “unmentionable” sexual sin. I liked that she talks about it in regards to both men AND women, and how “sex is not a solo sport,” (the title of chapter nine). She offers the idea of forgiveness, and being made whole in Christ as the ultimate solution.

In Chapter 14, Gresh pulls out Ephesians 5 as a biblical model for finding a mate, and I whole heartedly agree with this whole chapter. I was actually surprised by this chapter, as it seems to contradict what she says in chapter two about the kind of love to be looking for. But I’ll take it.

Anyways, this book does struggle slightly (in my opinion) with romanticism, the idea that you want some epic five year long pursuit with flowers everyday ending with a carriage ride and then a marriage proposal kind of romance. Would I give it to my daughter to read? I think I might, as long as a discussion followed it up. Would this be my first pick for a book on the theology of sex? Probably not.

When I first received this book, my first reaction was one of excitement. (I LOVE NEW BOOKS!) My second reaction was “Oh snap! Now everyone is going to know I read this!” But I am reviewing it nonetheless and I hope you stick around to hear what I have to say about this book.
Back in 2008 I went to one of Dannah Gresh’s Pure Freedom events and ever since then, when I would hear the word “yada” my mind would instantly take me back to that event where I learned the true meaning of the word. It’s not the equivalent of “blah, blah, blah” as I had initially thought, but it’s real meaning is “to know, to be known, to be deeply respected.” This is something that I have held onto ever since the Pure Freedom conference all those years ago.
In What Are You Waiting For? Dannah takes this word, “yada” and traces it from Genesis to Revelation shedding light on God’s view and purpose of sex.
This world has turned sex into something that is no big deal and something that “everyone is doing” and has completely disregarded the sacredness of it that God had intended.
What Are You Waiting For? also brings in several other topics including:
“Friends with Benefits”
Masturbation
Pornography
And other topics as well. In short:
“Friends with Benefits” – Not only is this a sin, but it’s also impossible for both parties NOT to be hurt in the process. With the way God made us and because this is not in His plan for us, it leaves you broken, confused, and having “benefits” in there is a complete lie! There are no benefits.
Masturbation – This is addressed directly with scripture.
Pornography – To quote a friend of mine, ”Pornography cheapens sexuality, objectifies the human body, reducing it to an object of gratification. ” Dannah expands on this topic more in her book.
Other topics include homosexuality and other difficult sexual issues.
What Are You Waiting For? Is written in a blunt manner and could be an uncomfortable book to read. That much Dannah writes to you on the first page. As this is written to an older audience (mainly senior high and college girls) I would recommend it for the audience to which it is written and no younger than that. The direct style in which it is written is much-needed in the world today. The main message in this book is abstinence.
Before you might have been thinking “yada, yada, yada” as in ”blah, blah, blah” but after reading this book, I know that when you hear “yada, yada, yada” it will have a whole new meaning to you!

This book blew me away! Dannah Gresh answered every question I had about being a Christian young lady seeking purity. I will be recommending this book to ALL of my friends. Truly a wonderful, Christ-centered book that will JURISTICALLY change your view of sex and God's true intent! If the Lord blesses me with a daughter in my future, this will be a must read for her!

I am currently reading, What are you waiting for by Dannah Gresh.. I read one of her other books, prior to this and I loved it. I chose the book because it focuses on celibacy, purity, and God's design for sex. I bought the book from Amazon last week (paperback). The paperback was on sale and cheaper than the Kindle (way cheaper 4.99). The price is back to 8.98 now. Kindle is 7.99.

The book is not for the meek, the shy, the closed minded. Gresh talks openly about sex and sex-related issues. Gresh discusses porn, masturbation, homosexuality, friends with benefits, and finding love. All of this was written from a Christian perspective. I am trying to read more books about sexuality from a Christian perspective. So much information is out there, but I want to know what God says.

The author starts out discussing her marriage--from dating to the proposal. Dannah also discussed how her old boss encouraged her to have sex and even wanted to buy condoms. She discusses how she felt conflicted between sexual freedom and sexual purity. One side says to indulge in sex and the other side says indulge in God. The battle between the spirit and flesh is a tough one. Sure, I think about sex, but I am not trying to rush back into having sex. Celibacy is hard, but it's where I need to be right now.

Dannah also discusses sex in the bible. Yada is the Hebrew word for sex. Not just any sex, "to know, to be known, to be deeply respected" (p. 17). Yada is intimate sex with someone, who truly knows you (like a husband). Yada adds a level of emotional intimacy to sex. No secrets, and nothing is held back (p. 24). Mind-body-soul connection. Yada is used more than 900 times in the Hebrew Bible. Yada does not only apply to sex, but it applies to a relationship with God. God wants to be known and respected. He wants us to seek him and follow after him with a pure heart. He does not want us to fall for counterfeit love (p. 27)

On the other hand, Shakab means sexual intercourse. Shakab is frequently used with Sikba, which means emission (p. 30). Shakab also means exchange of fluids. This is a form of counterfeit love. Having sex with someone to simply exchange fluids. This is the dirty, disgusting, yucky, awkward, shameful types of sex (p. 31). I had a lot of this type of sex and very little (or none) Yada sex.

Finally, I started reading the chapter on Masturbation first. This was the main reason I bought the book. The bible does not offer direct teaching on masturbation (p. 72). The bible tells us not to commit adultery, which is a sin. If you look after another with lust in your heart, you are committing adultery. This may involve pornography or staring at half-naked people online (I have left groups on Facebook because of the half-naked, tempting men photos). Masturbation can also hinder our relationship with God and people. It can become addictive (which was true for me). It also may cause shame. It also can affect future relationships, such as it can rob your future husbands (or husbands) ability to please you (p. 78). The book also discusses getting an accountability partner to help you with purity, celibacy , masturbation ,and other sexual issues.

Have not finished the book yet, but will post more on things, which can help others, was well as myself on both blogs (Perfect Chaos and Celibacy Diaries).

Interesting take on the topic of sex and the importance of waiting until marriage to have sex. Though sometimes presented like an infomercial (especially in the beginning), I believe there’s a lot of truth in this book and I would love for my future teenage daughter (whenever the Lord blesses me with her) to read this. I believe this book can be motivational and encouraging for women who wish to live a life of purity and honor God with their bodies. While it’s targeted to younger believers, I believe it can benefit women of all ages.

Growing up in church, our "Christian Sex Education" was more like "Sex Mis-Information". While I appreciate what the adults were attempting to do, I don't condone their methods of "keeping us pure" by frightening us with stories of those infected with HIV, abortions, and teen pregnancy. Fear only works for so long. I stayed in the teen group a little longer than most, and in the early 1990s I can remember all of the youth group being herded into the basement of the church. The church's TV and VCR was down there. We were not separated by gender, and we constantly giggled when the man on the Christian videos mispronounced "puberty".

Any questions?

Of course, any normal teenager wants to know EVERYTHING about sex even if they are not sexually active. However, no normal teenager is going to ask questions in front of the youth leaders, their husbands, and 15 members of the opposite sex. The adults may have even planned it this way so they wouldn't be caught off guard with any questions they didn't want to answer!

Twenty years later. . .

Dannah Gresh publishes the book What Are You Waiting For?: The One Thing No One Ever Tells You About Sex . I've been seeing links to CNN's religion blog with her article My Take: There's Nothing Brief About a Hookup . In fact, this link was shared quite often by my Facebook friends, so when I had the opportunity to review her book, I jumped at the chance.

What you will NOT find in What Are You Waiting For?:

You will NOT find exaggerated facts to scare teens into not having sex. You will NOT find mis-information.

What you WILL find in What Are You Waiting For?:

You WILL find honest facts. You WILL find reasons (mainly spiritual and emotional) she believes teenagers and other singles should wait until marriage. You WILL find honest talk about subjects my youth leaders shied away from 20 years ago.

Obviously, with the content of the book, I would recommend it for high schoolers and above. It is not for the faint of heart (and my youth leaders likely would have fainted with this book in the 1980s.) But it's real! I have a number of friends who are young adults, and this is common knowledge to them even if it wasn't so much talked about when I was their age?

This is a book I wish we would have had available to us in the 1980s. Maybe we could have had our questions answered better with less giggling! I'm glad to see there are books like this for this generation of young people!

FTC disclaimer: I received a copy of this book to review from the publisher. In no way did that influence my opinion of the book.

Another book I picked up for my youth girls that, when reading, I just kept thinking “Man I wish I had somebody tell me the stuff when I was a teenager!” It may have saved me from so many mistakes and misunderstandings. Growing up I knew what the rules said about having sex. And I was a rule follower, so I didn’t. But no one ever really talked to me about the WHY God wants us to wait...the beauty of doing things his way. This book does a great job of Hoping girls understand why God’s plan is so much better and why It is so worth the wait. I would recommend this for high school girls. I don’t think I would go much younger than that.

This is a must read book for young women who want to know the truth about sex. It is such a precious gift, and our culture tells us to treat it like something common, something to be tossed around and used without any thought. Dannah explains why sex is so valuable and does so in a way that is encouraging to those who are patient and struggling against the culture as well as encouraging and healing to those who have already bought into the lie, giving them hope.

Dana gives real, practical and honest talk about God's word and sex. She helps girls understand the value of the Truth of God's word on their Spirit. She explains how God designed our brains and the implications on our sexuality. Must read for high school and college age women and great tool for mentors and mothers.

Great book for teens to read and for parents to read. With the way things are now with influence on sex, this books give biblical standards in a way that teens can relate. We did this with our middle and high school girls in our youth and did it along with the live videos. This was a great time to share.

I wasn't sure if I'd recommend this book until I got past the halfway point. As a mom of boys, I was overwhelmed and heartbroken over the porn issue and the damage it causes, but then I remembered that God is a God of redemption and NOTHING is outside His power! The author is honest with her struggles and how to face issues with a heart of love.

One evening a few months ago, I asked the Lord a very specific question that had been gnawing at my soul for a quite a while. The next day, a Facebook friend posted a link to
What Are You Waiting For?

While not exactly question I was seeking, it was close enough that this seemed like a divine book recommendation.

Author Dannah Gresh opens with the warning that this book is “gritty” and if you’re the kind of girl who likes church more than the real world, you shouldn’t read it. She then proceeds to share a sugary rendition of how her husband proposed to her at Christian college. That was so far removed from reality as far as I was concerned, I almost stopped reading.
What Are You Waiting For: The One Thing No One Ever Tells You About Sex explores the Hebrew word yada and makes some interesting connections between knowing God and physical intimacy.

This book is refreshing in that it speaks directly to virgins in particular. Given the sex-saturated nature of our society, it fills a need that has been largely ignored by the church and Christian teachers. Gresh does address masturbation, pornography and homosexuality. In one chapter, she interviewed women who were virgins when they got married. The last half of the book, however, read like a meandering journal entry and used an overabundance of exclamation points. I was disappointed that Gresh suggested that every good Christian girl who “waits” will find love, get married and have a fabulous sex life, probably by the time she’s 25.
The warning in this case wasn’t really necessary; I would recommend this book for women in college and older teens.

I really liked this book. It was practical and down to earth and gave real answers from Scripture, from research (but not in a dry, research-y way), and from lots of interviews and personal experiences. I appreciated that it gave real answers to difficult questions. Much as I am a fan of Lauren Winner and her book Real Sex, I think this one is better.

The only reason I didn't give it five stars is that Gresh, like other authors I've read, feels the need to validate marriage and family over feminism and choosing a profession. I'm fine with that - I applaud her choices - though I am not (nor are any other 27+ singles I know) intentionally choosing a professional career and singleness over marriage and family. I felt a little chastised for not being married.

Gresh's style is very down-to-earth and real. This is definitely a book I will recommend.

Oh. My. Word. Such an incredible book. So far I’m about three fourths of the way through it and let me just say, it’s such an excellent tool for sexual purity. It’s written towards a female audience, but I think it would be extremely beneficial for guys to read as well. She goes back to the greek root words used in the Bible to show the true meaning and intention of sex, and how God views it. She also talks about the science of sex and how it affects your brain. It’s probably the best book on the subject I’ve ever read.

If you’re reading this, I encouraging you to go out and buy this book. Even if you don’t think you need it, you haven’t been struggling with sexual purity, you find the topic awkward and prefer not to approach it at all, etc. Whatever your excuse is, get over it and go get this book. It’s well worth your time.

Book Review: What Are You Waiting For?

Author: Dannah Gresh

What does God think about sex and all related topics? We don’t have to search far to find the answer to that question. Ms. Gresh has done all the work for us in her inciteful, spiritual filled book. She doesn’t shy away from any of the controversial questions of our time, that turn out to be questions for all time.

This book is recommended for single women and the information definately applies to them, but even as a long married woman I found the information helpful. Her scripture references are right on the money and left me wondering why it took me so long to see God’s truth. Definately a must read for single, married and anyone in between.

This is a great book for all women and young ladies. In the introduction the author states that the book is more straight forward than anything that she has written in the past. As always this author's heart for young girls is evident in her pursuit to rightly divide the word of God. I believe this book would be good for any woman: married, single, dating. In reading it the student is immersed in the truth of what God intended sex to be all about. It systematically shatters the worlds theories of and misconceptions and replaces these with the solid truth of God's Word. Excellent book.

Dannah Gresh has done it again. Unafraid to answer all the tough questions, she has answered some of the toughest that young girls will ask in the pages of this book. Her writing style was warm and non-judgemental. She told the truth in a way that will change young girl's lives, no matter their struggle. Dannah is brave, honest and her approach to this topic, I felt, was perfect. She didn't water down the truth, nor did she go too far with it. She is an amazing Christian author whom I hope will write more and more.

Amazing! Dannah Gresh writes about how having a godly view of sex is more about having a right relationship with God than just waiting. She emphasizes the fact that God created sex to glorify Himself, draw people closer to Him, and provide a picture of His love for us. An amazing book that I recommend to everyone--married, single, divorced . . . everyone.

a very candid, straight-to-the-point and realistic read. indeed its the one thing no one ever tells us about sex and its the most important thing one has to know about this subject. it is biblical but not in an ancient way but its message is very practical and timely. thank you Dannah for following through and finishing this book for us. highly recommended for all, teenage girls and boys alike.
