Upon returning from the alien planet, the remaining crew of the USCS Tempest never could have anticipated this: their ship is in impeccable condition, almost like it never left spacedock. All signs of their former trials are gone.
Due to a unique distortion in the planet’s atmosphere, Cas, Evie and the rest of the crew who visited the planet missed the last eighteen years of history. But just because those who stayed aboard had time to repair the ship doesn’t mean all is good. Commander Sesster has fallen into a coma, and without him, they still can’t leave. Not to mention the fallout from Evie’s actions on the planet’s surface. Cas and Box are the only ones who witnessed the carnage, or so they think.
But their main concern is what might have happened to the Coalition in the past two decades. There’s been no comm traffic coming from Coalition space in all that time, leading Cas to fear the worst. To find out, they’ll need to find a way to travel without Sesster, at least until they can figure out what’s wrong with him. But the truth of what happened in those eighteen years may be more than any of them are ready to handle.
Bestselling author Eric Warren has loved stories all his life. And despite writing from a young age, it took him a few years to realize being an author was what he wanted to do for a living. Today, he is the author of over twenty novels, including the highly successful INFINITY'S END series. Never one to shy away from what he loves, he plans to continue writing for another century, depending on the viability of life-extending technology.
“What matters most is how well you walk through the fire.”-Charles Bukowski “What was so special about the human race?” A question that seems to prevail above all. And to top it off, nerve wrecking situations, unsettling moments, nothing is what it seems on the reformed Tempest within the crew. I had this stomach tension the whole time! The moral and ethical of past and present actions are put into debate. Torn between what’s right or wrong for the best interests of the ship, the crew and humanity, it was a hard decision to make. The mistrust provoked by an uncertain future among the crew, the uncertainty, the secrets, the lies.. the dooming reality makes all the events come crashing down into an anticlimactic and vertiginous showdown. I think this has been the most conflicting and controversial installment in the series, how the future of a few surviving humans can manifest into a turmoil of different points of view, driven by despair, a sense of hopelessness, of loss, unrest..Tensión filled, fast paced, full of action and intrigue, thought provoking and exciting, gripping, immersive and engrossing, this premise has it all and more. I already want to read Memory’s Blade #8! I received a complimentary copy from the publisher and my review is entirely voluntary.
Received as an ARC, this is an honest review. The story opens back in the Coalition with a conversation between Fleet Admiral Arden Dix and a gossip reporter Zyrr Phax. It concerns the ever evolving story of the Tempest and its legendary crew and the exact 'truth' people should be informed of, regardless of any consequences of the secrets kept in the dark. Jumping back to the Tempest, with a reunited crew and a brand new ship augmented with new technology; yet as Caspian discovers something just doesn't add up. How is it possible for the ship to be new when they were suppose to be dead in the water? Sesster has fallen into a coma with no understanding as to why or how to help him. Despite that, the ingeniousness of the crew allows them to leap frog back to the Coalition. Eighteen years and the dark cruelty of the Athru having slaughtered the human part of the Coalition has left it shattered; with shards of hope coming from survivors they discover. One intriguing individual has a distinct and consequental connection to Caspian's past and why he was dragged back into the Coalition in the first place. They share dark stories of just how the Coalition and its alliances have been ripped apart; making it potentially impossible to find any real refuge. For Evie, the stakes are even more stark than before because of a controversial action Caspian took to protect her secret from the crew that unfortunately threatens her sanity and life once more. Even worse, a dark plan by some of crew could have cascading ramifications if it’s carried out. How do you have hope, when all but darkness surrounds you? A haunting story, profound and brilliantly written with motivations of the characters that are not only relatable but will leave you shocked as to reasons behind them. Highly recommended.
Number seven in the series and I continue to be hanging on each and every word.
Caspian, Evie, and what's left of the crew who weren't killed on the planet, return to the USCS Tempest. As a result of a time distortion, they are returning after eighteen years to find the ship in immaculate condition, but all is not as it should be.
Commander Sesster is now in a coma. Well, that put the hackles up on the back of my neck, I can tell you. Nothing has been said, but I feel some foul play in my bones. Cas and Box deal with Evie in the only way they can, by doing something hideous. There is an undercurrent running through the crew, and it doesn't feel at all healthy. This book drags the reader through every emotion they have in their body, and causes you such turmoil and worry that you'll likely come away from this with a stomach ulcer.
This is seriously dark stuff, folks. Even Box has lost a bit of his usual boxy-ness. Your heart will be broken if you've followed these larger-than-life characters this far. Wonderfully written, and I can't wait to read the next one.
I chose this book from a selection, then voluntarily read and honestly reviewed it. All opinions are my own.
I'm not one who is good with words to write a review but I have to say this - I Am So Mind Blown!
In Planetfall and Broken Links I must admit there were few instances where I didn't want to continue, didn't want to know what was going to happen. These 2 books were so intense in emotions and thrillers. I'm glad I pushed forward and the last few chapters of Broken Links were like a big burden lifted off my shoulders! I'm now looking forward to the final 2 books to arrive.
Wow book 7! This is a series I have completely and utterly devoured, however the fact that we are on bk 7 and there still seems to be no end in sight for these particular characters is well pushing my attention span a tad. I am all for investing in a series but this for me, is just starting to drag on a little. Leaves me undecided about continuing with the series.
This story is very interesting. The characters are easy to follow. I can't wait for book 8 to be released. I like the different races that are used in the story.
Broken Links is an apt name for this book, with so many personal links having been shattered in the previous book. Evie having lost control to Daingne and going on a rampage, killing 7 crew, including Laura is enough to destroy the crew, and a crew without a Captain, will never survive. Worse still is the devastating news that they have been lost on the planet for 18yrs. What has happened in that time? Did the Athru make it to Coalition space and do what they intended? Cas makes a decision to block out part of Evie’s memories, so that she will not remember what has happened on the planet, using Box to help him, thinking that no one knows what has happened, those that did, are dead. But he is wrong. The start of this book is one that shows just how brilliant Warren is at Character writing, as he draws on all his skills to provide such an incredible range and variety of characters. There is the obviously broken, and now confused Evie after having her memories altered, Zenfor, having been on the ship for so long, has grown extensively, and repaired the ship, making amazing upgrades and modifications to the ship, so that it is not only brand new, but better than anything the Coalition ever thought of. But she has changed so much, having lived amongst the humans and with Sester for so long. Her personality, whilst still a Sil, has so many subtle differences. Sester is in a coma, and no one knows why, but Cas does not believe anyone, thinking that there is something going on here that they are not telling him. Very quickly, there is a mystery that starts to unfold Lt Tyler has aged, grown, and matured, he is so much more professional, having had to run engineering all that time. Ryant, the pilot however, has spent more than 10yrs in stasis, and does not really know why, another mystery, but even he has changed, although he still has his good humour. One of those though, that has changed the most, is Volf, who is a ghost of her former self, seeming haunted, lost, and whilst she is in command of things, she is happy to be relieved, and yet not. She is also fearful. Cas is immediately suspicious, but is too lost in all that has happened on the planet, with Evie, with Laura and Box, with having to try and get the ship back to Coalition space, and find out what is happening. I do not want to give any spoilers away, there is just so many incredible, absolutely mind-blowing things that happen in this book, that if you have made it this far in the series, then you are going to have a hard time not putting this book down when you start reading it (and you will start reading it once you finish Planetfall, and you read those unbelievable words – 18yrs have passed. Just when you think these books cannot get any better, Warren does something truly remarkable, and creates another story that is even more extraordinary than the last. As previously stated, the Character work in this book is masterful, Warren is just a true genius at creating these Character Driven thrillers, that you get so absorbed in, you lose all concept of time and space. The story is outstanding, totally riveting in every aspect, there are so many twists and turns, and so many different plots running parallel to each other, that at times, you actually forget that there is this other major thing happening, you have gotten so lost, so stunned in what is happening in the current chapter. Then he moves to another part of the story, and you are like ‘OMG – I forgot about that!’ and get lost in the next chapter. And suddenly you realise you have to get up for work in like 3hrs!! Sleep? Who need Sleep?? I have compared previous volumes to things like Trek and the Orville, but as this series progresses, there are no storylines, or no quality of writing in those shows that equal this series, we could only wish for something like this as a series. As he progresses this story, Warren has continued to generate his stunning galaxy, and in this book, we learn so much more about things as he expands upon the world/galaxy building, that he could release a separate book on it (and it would be a fascinating volume indeed). If you love a great Mil Sci-Fi, thriller, character driven story, or have even ever thought about this series, then I implore you to get this, you will not be disappointed, it is easily one of the best series I have ever read.
So, that's it. I'm done with the series, though the series isn't done.
Easy reading, and I enjoyed these, but they're not groundbreaking. It's not intended as an insult to say these books are mostly just an extended version of a long-running conflict between human(oid) personalities & apparently dangerous aliens. But seven books in, and there's no resolution in sight? C'mon.
The author needs to take some cues from other amazing space opera writers like Iain Banks: Create a universe in which you can tell many stories, but make each one self-contained yet with some elements of prior books to create an overall arc for the universe.
I'm now quite soured on reading what appears to be an endless series of books with each one ending with a cliffhanger, and (now) the need to wait months to read ... wait for it: another cliffhanger.
I liked this one better than a few in this series, as it started to move again; that there was less of the obnoxious robot certainly helped also. Caspian makes some questionable choices and a bunch of shit goes wrong, but it ends on a better note setting things up for the next bound.
We're at book 7, and this approaches the limit of my attention span for a single series. I'm not sure where this is going, but I still care enough to read the next book as long as some sort of end is in sight...
With what's going on in the world, it's taken me longer to read this than I normally would but Mr Warren continues to impress. Yet again the story takes a new turn, each book seems to have a life of its own at the moment. The crew are reunited and remain so apart at the same time. Friendships fail and friends are reacquainted. People lie to each other, bonds deepen and though the story focuses on Cas and Evie, Box, Xax, Zenfor, Tileah and my personal favourites Jann and Ryant continue to grow and develop.
Just bought Number 8, let's see where this takes us now!
The story just keeps getting better. Eric Warren is such a good writer. He writes in a way that is very easy to follow along and paints mental pictures that easy to see.
