I love bungo stray dogs with all my heart, but this novel version of the first two episodes of the anime simply isn't it. It's poorly written and doesn't add anything new to the story or the characters - there's even some typesetting mistakes in the English version... I would discourage anyone from spending money on this.
I have read around 150 pages of scientific articles in the past week and it has Not Been Fun, per se. So I thought as a small break I'd read this, since I could get it read in an hour.
Let me preface this by saying that Bungou Stray Dogs is, as it currently stands (and I don't see that changing), my all time favourite anime. Like, I am unhealthily obsessed. My friend makes memes about it; I want a tattoo inspired by BSD; I keep up with the monthly chapters (VERY unusual for me); I want FIGURINES. So, as I said – obsessed.
However, this was pretty terrible. It wasn't written very well (I have a feeling Asagiri wasn't responsible for this adaptation) and if you've seen the first few episodes of the first season even once, this reading experience will be fairly boring. While I'm not upset I bought this – as I am not the biggest manga reader, I usually like to just buy one volume onto my shelf to signify my love; I have no desire to collect all volumes –, I am also not happy. I could've bought an actual manga volume (the one with the Chuuya and Dazai fighting Lovecraft; the girls who get it, get it). So, I will likely part with my copy. Blehh.
It is worth noting that not all BSD light novels suck. The ones actually written by Asagiri are great, as much as I've familiarised myself with them. This short little thing, however, was an adaptation of the first 2-3 anime episodes without all the charm; I hesitate to actually call it a 'light novel'.
The main issue in this light novel is the translation. While I wouldn’t say it is horribly written, it is obvious that this light novel wasn’t translation properly and was rushed. Some parts are spaced & sized awkwardly, while some terms (like the term ability/skill user) are inconsistent. In the manga, the comedy bits from the first two episodes/chapters are really funny and work well, but, in book form, it feels flat. It is just apparent that this adaptation isn’t made well like the other light novels, a form of cash grab will you.
Though, I will say, the descriptions in this book help a bit. The descriptors of the scenery do help to give you understanding, and there are few lines that do bring out tiny bits of lore/implications.
Really, if you are a BSD fan and need a book for your reading challenge, then this’ll be fine.
This novel is set at the beginning of the story. It tells how the white tiger who was starving to death after being kicked out of an orphanage, meets the armed detective agency. It's a short story, with pictures. More a Novella, than novel. The characters are just like they are in the Anime. It was a short fun read.
