Ugh. Big fat DNF.

The heroine is such a complete and utter witch to the self-made hero. She's too high and mighty to lower herself to marry such a rough lowlife as the one who bought all her father's vowels. Same wonderful father who sold married her off to save the family. She's not only snotty to the H but about his sisters as well. In fairness, she's not rude to them, but tells him off for wanting to marry her to help his sisters in society.

I am sure they had incredible sexual tension, but I never got that far.

A far better romance with a highborn Lady who falls for a rough, self-made man is Lisa Kleypas' Where Dreams Begin. She's disturbed by their social class clash, but never lowers herself into being a bitch.

His raven hair fell in unruly waves, brushing his shoulders. He wore a plain black coat, buff trousers, and a matching waistcoat. His cravat was tied in a simple knot. Everything about him bespoke his background.
He was someone she ought not to know, her inferior in every way.

4.5 stars!

This novella was equal parts a great enemies-to-lovers story and an interesting setup for future books concerning Dev's FIVE sisters. The push-and-pull of Dev and Emilia's relationship was filled with such angsty, hate-to-love-you passion that definitely warmed my cheeks at times (Dev is a dirty talker!). Dev is a working man who has worked hard for his fortune and is therefore everything that Emilia, a duke's daughter, should despise. However when Dev acquires the duke's debts, he exchanges the money owed for Emilia's hand in marriage in order to better himself and give his sisters a chance to make an advantageous match. I loved getting to see little snippets of who each sister is and possibly get a glimpse of who they will end up with. Overall, this was a great, steamy novella complete with OW drama and a "misunderstanding". Definitely recommend from one of my go-to HR authors!

Too much past behavior ruined it for me

I am sick of the hero having a depraved past and thinking about it and then to have proof of his bad behavior intruding on his current life in the form of a crazy ex-mistress is just bad ton. I just wish they had said he was a rake and leave it at that. I didn't want to know anymore than that. Very disappointing.

And the whole story was just okay. I love this author but I did not like the heroine for 30 to 40% of the book. She was such a snob. And the hero was okay and he would have been great if we didn't have to hear of his past. I read this out of order so the Dev in the 4th book bears little resemblance to this man. I am kind of glad I read this first as I may not have gone on with the series. And I definitely liked the second story. Loved it actually. But the 4th book was a little less appealing and there is also a novella in between that was okay too. I will read the others as I have pre ordered them already so I hope they will be wonderful.

You can appreciate why Scarlet advises her mum not to read these . Mr Winter is decidedly hot, why doesn’t he live next door to me .

Excellent new series, starts with a bang with these two .

Mr Dev Winter ,
A man who knows what he wants and normally gets it .
A business man , successful , rolling in money , 5 beautiful sisters .
What he doesn’t have is respectability.

Enter

Lady Emilia King
Daughter of a Duke
Neighbour to Mr Winter
Sassy , opinionated, love of her life and former betrothed died in an accident, 27 and on the shelf by design.

What Dev wants is her , what she doesn’t want under any circumstances is him .
Now starts the battle ,and it’s SO GOOD !

A great book and what looks to be a very amusing series to come , these sisters are going to be fun .

I received an Arc copy of this book and chose to post this review

Devereaux (Dev) Winter is one of the wealthiest men in England, but blue blood he does not have, and his family have become quite notorious within the Ton – the Wicked Winters are as reviled as they are renowned. Determined to gain a wife of good breeding so he can see his sisters accepted and settled, he’s set his gaze on Lady Emilia King, the daughter of the Duke who lives next door.

Having lost the man she loves, Lady Emilia King has no desire to ever marry, and is more than happy to remain unwed, but when Dev wins her ailing father’s unentailed assets in a game of chance, she finds herself between a rock and a hard place, having no choice but to concede to his demand – marriage.

I wasn’t too sure about this at the start, the scathing haughtiness of Emilia and coldness from Dev, had me thinking I would hate the read and characters. I certainly didn’t like either of them at the start in anyway, especially Emilia, thankfully around the 16% mark my feelings started to slowly shift.

The notorious reputation of the Winters seems to be the consequences of the snobbish nature of the ton and their ability to blow things out of proportion – the former of which Emilia potently embodies for the first 20% or so.

Good things really do come in small packages. This short, yet sinfully-sweet and amazingly sensual tale left me satisfied and eager for the rest of the series. Like a delicious, rich dessert often one only needs a small portion to feel satisfied...and this was this passionate and intelligent tale for me. This story was well-crafted, lush, and intriguing. The pace was perfect, and despite it being a shorter read, it did not feel rushed. Upon finishing the story I felt absorbed into the alluring world of the Winters and eager to explore more of the series. This is a must read. No wonder this author was recommended so highly in my HR fb group; her writing is exquisite.

What a great introduction to a new series! Devereaux Winter may have an abundance of money but he doesn’t have an aristocratic background. He needs someone to introduce his five sisters into society. Dev is pinning his hopes on his next door neighbour, Lady Emilia King. Theirs is not an easy relationship and sparks fly when they get together. Emilia was attracted to Dev but didn’t want to be and fought against it. Dev was not as ruthless with those he loved as in business and only wanted the best for them. I enjoyed seeing Dev’s and Emilia’s relationship develop. The sisters are quite a mixture of lively characters and I look forward to reading their stories. This was a very entertaining read.

I was so happy to finally stumble across a well written regency series, with relatable characters, without a boatload of manufactured angst.

This book contain a favorite plot of mine, a self-made man who has worked hard but still rebuffed by society and marries a titled yet cash poor woman who comes to see her husband as honorable as any titled lord. My favorite fiction hero is Ethan Brundy from A Weaver Takes a Wife, but Devereaux Winter has certainly earned a place as an awesome self-made hero.

Emilia, the heroine, was much harder to like in the beginning though I could understand her initial resistance. She had lost her betrothed to an accident, her father was suffering from dementia, and now some jumped up mushroom tell her that she has been bought and sold into marriage and expected to introduce Dev’s five wild sisters into society. However, as Emilia spent more time with the Winter family, she starts to see her “loutish” husband in a softer light.

I was so excited to discover this author, so far, I love her writing and plan to read the entire Winter series. Well done and highly recommended.

3.5 stars. This one's not bad. I liked Dev, but Emilia...not so much. I have never been fond of a stuck-up, bitchy heroine. She looked down on Dev for far too long. Due to a misunderstanding right up until the end, it was Dev who did the most grovelling. Lovely writing, though. I'll probably read the rest of the series due to the writing.

*****Wicked in Winter is another 5 Star Romance*****

First, I love Scarlett Scott's books!! This new series is starting with the handsomely virile Mr. Devereaux "Dev" Winter is in desperate need of a noble wife. He has 5 sisters who are in need of female guidance. He has a beautiful Lady in mind, his next door neighbor!
Lady Emilia King, daughter of a Duke has declared herself a spinster since the untimely death of her suitor. She is stubborn and very prideful of her blue blood! When she finds out that Mr. Winter is interested in marrying her, she is outraged!
I fell in love with Mr. Dev Winter in chapter 1!!! He comes from a hardworking family, that made their extreme wealth by working. Working is something the "ton" frowns upon. I loved their first meeting, she is rude to him, which bothered me, but he gives as good as he gets!! Lady Emilia is devastated to learn what her father did to their finances.

I love Ms. Scott's attention to details, this story line is deliciously captivating!! He is so attractive and she is beautiful and begins to soften towards him. Dev is attracted to her, and I loved how their
chemistry, sex appeal flourishes throughout the 1st and 2nd chapters!!
This book has everything I love about Ms. Scott's books. Gorgeous alpha males, beautiful heroine, captivating story line, hot love scenes and lots of new characters for her next book!

I was gifted this ARC by the lovely Scarlett Scott for an honest review!

As much as I adore Scarlett Scott, this was not my piece of cake. I love to feel all the fruity pieces between my bites but here I felt like a had a bland mousse that did not satisfy my palette.

However, the cover is a bomb which made me change my rating from 2 to 3 stars :)

This was a good read. With a very frustrating heroine, BUT: Dev Winters saves this entire first part of the book IMO, he’s the star of the show.

I have a weakness for “made men” in my historicals. I find them to be a delicious change in what I usually read so I’m always up to read them, plus I love hustlers. The golden age is a particularly favorite genre of mine, and I felt a kinship to Dev winters work ethic, rising above his status, more so for his sisters than him, he reminded me a bit of one of my favorite characters in an older historical Trevor Sheridan. Lions and Lace.

So you know I REALLY loved his character.

Emilia, nope, no & nonsense. I almost gave up on her. Then....we’ll heck, I have to admit I like accuracy in my historicals and it’s true, a haughty Dukes daughter would NOT be very happy marrying what she thought was beneath her. Okay....so I went with her ice princess thing...

But, she also was an avowed spinster and in love with a dead ex fiancé. Too much!

I thought....

But somehow, in this quick book in the second half Ms Scott wrote the character, pretty well I might say, out of all the reasons I really didn’t like her. So there’s that. Rarely happens, so kudos!

I will say, this is the kind of hero I like sometimes and she writes the broody, driven hero well. Whether he be Duke, Earl, or common man, I ended up really enjoying the book enough to definitely recommend.

We’re introduced to the sisters, a lot of Beatrix, who will be the next book, and she’s definitely going to blow ole Devs plans. Ha!

Here’s to a brand new series! I’m looking forward to the sisters wreaking havoc on their men, lol.

As always I loved the enemies to lovers aspect but the Emilia's continued snotty attitude did detract from my over all enjoyment of story. It was a short book and she was able to redeem herself but I did her character was developed more. I liked Dev as the H and his loyalty to his sisters was touching. Its was an quick & steamy read, the second book was better and I think I will finish out the series.

The Heroine of the story Lady Emilia King Spinster daughter if a mentally ailing Duke. The Hero Devereaux Winter was a very Wealthy man considered to belong to the working lower class of society. But he own at least half of all England. Dev acquires all of the Duke gaming debts in return for him marrying his daughter Emilia. Dev wants to enable his five sisters to enter the Upper Class of society and marry titled men.

Emilia is condescending, mean and down right nasty to Dev and at first to his sisters. The love of her life her fiancée was killed when he was thrown from his horse.

I just could not get over how nasty Emilia was. She finally does except her husband and his sisters but it is much to late in the story for my liking.

Deveraux Winter may be the wealthiest man in England but he longs for the one thing all his money can't buy: respectability. Now he needs a highborn wife to help him see his five younger sisters into good marriages. Luckily for him, his next door neighbor is a duke with pockets to let and an unmarried spinster daughter.

Since the death of her beloved fiance, Lady Emilia King has believed her heart incapable of further love and especially incapable of marriage. When she learns that the brutish merchant Mr. Winter now owns all her father's assets, she is left in a state of shocked denial. She has no intention of giving in and yet if she doesn't marry Dev, she and her parents will be utterly impoverished. Dev always gets what he wants and eventually he and Lady Emilia may come to want the same things.

I really didn't like Emilia. She was over the top with her snobbishness and hatefulness to Dev and his sisters simply because of their lower birth. When her snobby facade finally subsided and she allowed herself to feel again and try to know Dev, I did like her a bit more, although she still was awfully quick to judge Dev without trying to communicate with him. Dev wasn't perfect either, but he was a gruff bad boy hero with a good heart and I do love those. I found him charming and he exhibited lovely growth, especially for a novella. I loved how steamy this read was and how much chemistry these characters had. This is a promising start to a new series and I'm looking forward to the rest.

I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Wow! Dev and Amelia, oh my these two had a love/hate attraction and sizzling chemistry from the beginning. They are neighbors but from two very different worlds. She was born into it and he has had to work hard to get to where he is today.
He attains her father’s vowels and forces her to marry him. Everything he does is ruthless except when it comes to his five sisters that he needs to establish in society. Amelia eventually gives in to the marriage because there is no other choice, her father’s ailing mind has put them in this situation and now she has to fix it. She soon finds out that Dev is not at all what she thinks and we get to go on a spicy journey from hate to sizzling attraction to love.
This a wonderful book and a reasonably quick read if you are strapped for time. I cannot wait to read about the Wicked Winter sisters and their escapades! I was given an ARC of this book and chose to post a review.

Wicked in Winter by Scarlett Scott is book One in The Wicked Winters Series. This is the story of Emilia King and Devereaux 'Dev' Winter.
Dev is a part of the Wicked Winters family that have a somewhat dark cloud on them. In addition, he is a very rich businessman and has 5 sisters he needs to see settled and married. But without a title nor the reputation he won't be getting his sister settled. But he does have one thing going for him...his next door neighbor is a Duke with a spinster daughter named Emilia. Dev has set a plan in motions since the daughter doesn't want to enter into marriage to force her hand. Emilia has not plans to marry and tries to resist Dev but the sparks keep flying along with their words. But Dev wants more than he originally thought and won't settle for no.
Loved their story and Ms. Scott's writing!

Wicked in Winter
The Wicked Winters series, Book 1
Scarlett Scott, author

This is such a warm, sweet story and I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Bent on finding a wife to chaperone his sisters with their coming out, Devereaux Winter means to have who he wants, and he wants Lady Emilia King, daughter of the Duke of Abingdon. However, Lady Emilia is having none of it. After all, he and his roguish behaviors are scandalous, not to mention, he does not have a genteel bone in his body. Crass, hulking and very outspoken, Mr. Winter is used to having his way. Alas, Emilia's father, the ailing Duke has lost everything to Mr. Winter due to his gambling habits. She included.

Read this enchanted story and I promise, you'll be pleasantly pleased. I know, I sure was. I'm looking forward to reading the next story in the saga of the Winter's clan.

This is my first romance novel by this author. I thought I would give it a try after reading several comments on Facebook. I really enjoyed Wicked in Winter. The story centers on a man, who is fierce, powerful and very wealthy, but born to lower class merchants, who loves his sisters so much he will do anything necessary to give them every advantage to make a successful match. He buys up the debit of his neighbor next door, a duke, with the intentions of marrying the dukes daughter. Of course our heroine , the daughter in question, is having not part of this. She still loves her fiancée who died 3 years ago in an accident. This is a very good romance and I loved the characters. I will say this is a hot, and passionate romance, which I love. And the balance this author has with a great story, realistic likable characters along with incredible sex, well it will be in my top re read list. I will definitely be buying more romance novels by this author. sensual rating on a scale of 1 being clean to 10 being burn your fingers holding the book, I would rate it a strong 8. Highly recommend Wicked in Winter by Scarlet Scott.

It's a novella, so although the premise is simple you don't get much out of character development.

It's a forced marriage. Dev, needs an aristocratic bride to help his 5 sisters get good marriages. Even though he is the wealthiest man in England, he lacks respectability,
He decided to buy the sick duke's debts so he can trade them for his daughter's hand.

This is an enemy to lovers trope. They say awful things to each other at the beginning, but their chemistry in undeniable.
It's a difficult trope for a novella, since it lacked their growth. It's a shame we get hints as to how awful Dev's father was, but we never get the explanation.

Emilia starts as a very spoiled, very snob, "lower herself" kind of mentality and even though this changes, you don't get to see it. Her relationship with his sisters improves, but it's off page. Which makes it less believable

I did appreciate Scarlett's writing and it was my first one, bur I think I felt something was missing. No doubt because it was a novella. I would have loved more details on Dev, as he seemed hot.

I will read more books to form a better opinion

This was my first read by Scarlett Scott. Plenty of my goodreads friends have read her books and recommended them. I did enjoy the book, although it took some time for the heroine to grow on me. She was quite uppity and arrogant with the hero.

Well, looks like I'm in the minority of reviewers here, because this one annoyed me more than anything!

True, Dev is the yum, but Emilia made me wish for a ten ton weight to fall on her about 2 chapters in. Thing is, she really needed her a$$ spanked -- though perhaps I've been reading too many Renee Rose titles lately (I grant you that!). But talk about a spoiled little aristocrat! Unlike a lot of romance heroines, whose fathers or mothers are overbearing autocrats, this one has been allowed to basically do whatever she likes -- whether that's maunder around for several years over a guy who we are told was just THE.GREATEST.EVER., or prance around with her nose in the air, like she's the bloody Queen of May. In reality, her family is skint, and frankly, I wish the hero had gone a good long way towards showing her just how bad life could've been for her.

Frankly, that would've turned up the heat for me, and made the whole hate/love thing work better. Nope, he just insists on how much worse it would've been if he hadn't taken up her father's debt. It makes Emilia look petty AND stupid, as she blinkerdly insists that he's a ruffian and soooooo below her. I never felt that she developed into a better, more interesting person, and that was disappointing. Yeah, she loves her family, and oh, it's just too hard for her that she has to marry someone to help them out, instead of moping over her emotional shrine to James, or whatever his name was. But seriously, I needed her to become more, in order to deserve Dev's intense level of devotion.

The way that things turned on a dime suddenly for them was just not meaningful for me. Great, he showed her that she's still alive, because hey, sex! Sigh.

If he really was supposed to be rough and devious or wicked, I wish he would've taken possession of her family's estate, shown her a hovel where they could go eke out a living, let her see what Bedlam would be like for her father to live in -- and then ask her if she thinks she's too good to marry him. Ooooohhhh! Talk about a more heated hate-to-love story! Or have her try to salvage her pride by working at menial labor to take care of her parents, so she becomes a stronger woman and can understand his ruthlessness and what he'd do for his sisters.

As it was, I found this weak sauce at best. Don't know if I'll bother with the others at this point, but if I get really bored, I'll give them a try...meh.

Wow, what a great beginning to a new series & the first book gets you emotionally involved in crux of the matter in the first few pages.

Mr. Deveraux "Dev" Winter is a merchant & the head of the most notorious family in London, The Wicked Winters. He is castigated by polite society for his dissolute behavior but he also is rich as Croesus & owns 1/2 of London. Dev loves his five sisters & they are all of marrying age, so he must repair his reputation in order to earn acceptance in to the Ton. He needs to marry a highly respected lady from a titled family that can assist his sisters, in their first season, to find titled husbands.

Lady Emilia King, is the spinster daughter of the Duke of Abingdon, has declared to stay away from love & remain unwed after losing her love & finance in a riding accident. Alas, things would be changing rapidly for her - her father had been ill with memory & lack of judgement behavior & her mother has informed her that her father has lost all of their assets & Mr. Winter, who lives in the next door townhouse, has bought up all of her father's vowels. Mr. Winter's price for this is to call the vowels paid & she would in turn marry him & take his sisters under her wing to prepare them for the season & finding husbands from good families.

Emilia & Dev have a definite "hate/love" relationship & their journey is a tumultuous one. I loved Dev from the beginning - he was handsome, rich, manly, in control but also, soft, kind, loved his sisters & wanted to be accepted by society. I found Emilia arrogant, unfeeling & I hated the way she looked down on Dev's lower class but as the book moved on I really ended up loving her.

I highly recommend this book - Scarlett Scott writes the most entrancing stories to go with her delicious heroes & lovely heroines!

I was gifted the Advanced Reader Copy of this book & all opinions are my own & have been voluntarily given.
