… and the fate of humanity hinges on a vampire’s vow.
For millennia, vampires have lived and warred in the belly of the earth, surfacing in secret to feed on humans.
Rune’s family has ruled the vampires for thousands of years, and one day, Rune will ascend to the throne. But now that he is eighteen, he must take a vow of obedience to his father, the king, at a ritual ceremony. It’s a vow that plagues him with doubt, because once it’s made, he’ll be forever bound to his father’s bloodthirsty destiny.
As the ceremony—and an unthinkable upheaval—draws near, Rune struggles with his decision. He wants to do what’s best for his people, but some instinct is holding him back, a voice in his head and heart calling him to the surface…
Kayleigh’s stories are tales of struggle and pain, loss and despair. Love is won in the battle to rise out of the depths of darkness. Victory is in the sweet bliss of happily ever after.
Once upon a time Kayleigh hid out in a cold dark garage reading a book her parents forbid her to read. She was nine years old. The book? Giovanni’s Room by James Baldwin, a story of love between two men–well, actually the story was a little more complicated than that, but hey, she was nine.
In the dark of the garage, a light, a passion, a sheer joy for love in all its manifestations awoke. And love between two men–Hot!
Kayleigh’s men are often broken, always brave, and always memorable.
Terminei a leitura desesperada por respostas! Somos apresentados a um mundo mágico, novo, instigante! Uma mistura viciante de magia antiga, o mundo moderno é um universo dominado por vampiros que se escondem na noite!
I read this book. But I will be honest. I did not understand it. I get Rune’s family is royalty in the vampire world. But what happens to the surface to cause the destruction? This is very incomplete for me.
What happened to cause the collapse? What happened topside to the humans? Did the king seek vengeance? What did Rune do since he didn't make his vow? What about his Fated Mate? What's the repercussions of losing the bracelet? What of Dawn's unborn child since it was foretold she would have only one (which is Jessa)?
So many unanswered questions. The blurb for the next book in the series appears to be set many years after the exodus in this book and focuses on a different character entirely. This cliffhanger apparently isn't resolved.
Very confusing and disappointing. I'm disinclined to read this series any further.
YMMV, of course.

I actually read book 1 A Vampire's Heart before this one so I knew how things were going to play out. But I did enjoy watching the events to unfold. We get to see some of the world below ground before access was completely cut off. I recommend reading them in order. I loved seeing Jessa as a youngling. The book end with them just coming to the surface and I would have liked to see the events leading up to the first book
Great start to the series. I read this one after the first one but I do think you'll enjoy it more if you read it in order. You get a front row seat into the Underground world of Vampires. How it all began, and what can come next. Rune is amazing and I wanted to know more about it instantly. So many great relationships and connections between characters that you can't choose just one to love. Can't wait for the next and I would definitely want to see more prequels like this about how Vampires lived before (Qudim for example would be a amazing prequel).
