It is 1988 in Hong Kong. Unjustly kicked out of the Hong Kong police Danny Tyler is making a living in any way he can: a little private detecting, a little opium smuggling, a little blackmail. Soon, he hopes to marry Miranda, wealthy daughter of Hong Kong tycoon Walter Wong. Walter Wong has two plans. One is to make a fortune by manipulating the Hong Kong Stock Exchange: the second is to ensure that his daughter never marries Danny Tyler. A woman dressed as a ninja warrior breaks into Danny’s apartment and threatens him with death. But who is Mr Nakamura and why must Danny stay away from the Marishiko case? A Russian agent looking to make a killing; a dead man in a Hong Kong hotel; a Japanese yakuza gang bent on revenge; an old ship carrying two illicit cargoes slowly crossing the South China Sea; a hitman brought in from China by the 14K triad.. In Moscow an ageing spy reveals a twenty-year-old secret. And as Typhoon Olivia forms in the seas east of the Philippines, blissfully unaware of the forces converging on him, Danny Tyler continues to enjoy Hong Kong’s bars, girlie joints and opium dens unaware that he is bound for a fate that really is worse than death.
I left England at the age of twenty-five for a three-year contract in Bangladesh. Since then I have lived and worked in India, Thailand, Singapore and now Hong Kong. I have travelled very extensively in China and throughout the Far East, Australasia and Africa. In particular a passion for diving has taken me to some of the most remote and beautiful places on our planet: places such as the islands of Micronesia and the Marianas; Tahiti and Bora Bora; Malaysia and Indonesia: the Great Barrier Reef. I have dived many times with sharks. I have written many short stories and won various prizes – you can read some of them on my web site: https://trevorhughes-writer.com. My first full-length novel was entitled The Mean Streets of Chicago the first in a series starring Manchester Private Eye, Tom Collins. The fourth in the series: A Betrayal in Munich will be out in the summer. I am also shareholder and content provider to Happy Ali, an on-line newspaper and magazine carrying good news only. See: https//happy-ali.com I have a long-suffering Singaporean wife, Glenda; two children: Harry, now living and working in Hong Kong and Tessa, in the final year of a Doctorate at Cambridge. The family is completed by two dogs, half a dozen goldfish and a large, homicidal turtle named Psycho. I also have two children, James and Rachael from a previous marriage.
Follow Danny Tyler as he wreaks havoc in Hong Kong and I bet you cry for him eventually. This book is a fascinating glimpse into an area of Hong Kong long disappeared - the Old Walled City - a warren of murky streets, home to all kinds of dubious pursuits but exuding a sense of energy, creativity and excitement all its own. Murder, mayhem, love and lies, fuelled by a daily diet of alcohol in this detective story with a poetic heart. Lovely stuff.
