Let the Bird Fly: Life in a World Given Back to Us

Rate this book
Let the Bird Fly reminds readers that we are a free people, bought with the price of Christ’s own blood. We are free to weigh the issues of the day, to engage our neighbor, to live out our callings, and know who we are no matter what: redeemed children of God.

At the heart of the Christian life is a spoken word, God’s absolution, the declaration that Christ’s righteousness is our own through faith. From this our Christian life flows and in this we find our confidence to live, love, and labor for our neighbor. We are graced to live beyond ourselves in the here and now. We are gifted to consider and look forward to more than those who live without the optimism and freedom of sins forgiven. We are turned outside of ourselves and grounded, even as we are made new and set loose to dare to live as though there is more to life than this life. In short, precisely when fear seems most tempting, Christ calls us to let the bird fly.

An excellent synopsis of what it means to have a world given back to us through Christ and what it means to live in that world given back to us. Johnston wrote this to help his ethics students to understand the Scriptural view of life in this world as God intended it. With Johnston's uniquely engaging style, this is an easy read and well worth your time.

Christians are many times viewed by those outside of the faith as naive, hypocrites, or do-gooders. Christians often find themselves fearful of what others will think of them and their faith.

Let the Bird Fly calls Christians to live, not in fear, but in the free and full forgiveness that Christ won for all people. Knowing that the victory has already been won for us, we can live for our neighbors, loving and serving them. We don't have to be better than or good enough, since Christ is already that for us.

The subtitle is Life in a World Given Back to Us. Christians don't need insular communities (think monasteries) where we hide ourselves away from the rest of the world. They need the good news that the Christian faith offers; our joy can be theirs too.

I recommend you read this short and insightful book.

Short, simple and to the point. The author does a great job of hitting the highlights of solid Bible teaching. Then he progresses to ways we can apply those truths to our Christian lives.

This would be a great book to recommend or gift to someone who is exploring the Christian faith or searching for a good theological home. The basics are presented in a winsome manner and the author gives plenty of quotes that could be explored for deeper investigation.
