3 of 5 stars to Leta Blake's Wake Up Married serial, Episodes 1 - 3: Wake Up Married, Meet the Family, Do the Holidays, the first half of a six-part serial book about a couple who wake up in bed in Las Vegas, learning they've just gotten married. I wanted to read something new and different, and the concept of a couple waking up married in Las Vegas, and unable to divorce for a number of reasons, seemed intriguing. The story was cute. At times, it was a bit cheesy. Concept good. Characters good. Writing OK. Funny. A good welcome change of pace!

Interesting set of characters. Loved the grandmother who's husband and son were in the mob. Ha! She's a pip. The mother's OK... but the friends give way to lots of laughs. The ex-bf needs to go. He's got issues.

Audiobook - 4.5 stars

Story - 3.5 stars

-OMG This story is funny! John Solo's narration fit this kind of story perfectly.

-The writing is amazing and easy to follow.

-Patrick! Patrick! Patrick! Dr. Patrick! gets the MVC (C- Character) award. This no filter, obnoxious, sarcastic, self proclaimed genius Neurosurgeon, funny man, sweet man, made this story tolerable. I love his parts.

-Will - Huh! the jury is still out. I wanted to hug and slap him so hard. Ugh!

-The mafia thing is just ridiculous but i love it.

- Will's mother and Ryan should just burn.

-Overall, this was a pleasant surprise, i went in with zero expectations and ended up liking it alot and laughing so hard.

Will & Patrick Wake Up Married is a favorite series of mine, and I couldn't wait to get my grabby hands on it in audio-format. Leta Blake is a go-to author of mine, and I was curious how I would feel about the series on re-read. It 100% didn't let me down, and I'm already clamoring for the rest in the series in audio. *happy sigh*

I'm wishy-washy on John Solo's narrations usually, but he did a great job with this serial, even if he had a few mispronunciations that irked me (pediatrics is pronounced peeeeeeds when abbreviated to "peds," god!). I liked his distinct voices and the way he narrated Will and Patrick, especially. My favorite narration by him to date.

The audio of episodes 1-3 stopped right before my favorite in the series, which is episode 4, and I wish both parts were released at once so I could binge! The wait for the rest will be torture.

Totally recommended for fans of this series. I listened to the whole thing with a huge smile on my face.

In Will & Patrick Wake Up Married Serial, Episodes 1-3, Leta Blake and Alice Griffiths have compiled the first three episodes of this wonderful series into one volume. I’m glad to say they did a great job ensuring that the three books flow together seamlessly. Beautifully narrated by John Solo, for everyone who hasn’t read this classic, now’s your chance to listen!

It’s no surprise this story makes a wonderful audiobook, and John Solo turns in a flawless performance. Mr. Solo capitalizes on the funny moments and makes the most of the chemistry between these two young men. His warm and sensual voice is perfect for these characters.

John Solo, clearly put - works - capturing the essence of both characters’ unique personalities. I love the gruffness he infuses into Patrick’s lines when he gets emotional. That little bit of vulnerability peeking through is so sexy. And he completely nails Will’s sweet and tentative nature. Total opposites, Solo keeps them as unique and different as they were written.

In this mixture of friends to lovers, opposites attract, and a slow-burn, Leta Blake and Alice Griffiths lay the groundwork for a spectacular story, and they deliver! There’s never a dull moment - between the drama of Will’s mafia family, the comedy of the eclectic residents of their small South Dakota town, and (best of all) the scorching sexual chemistry between Will and Patrick!

The spark between these two really comes across in audio and John Solo has a blast amping it up. From the opening scene to the fireworks when these two finally figure it out, the anticipation is wonderful. Knowing what’s in store for us, and with the promise of John Solo’s entertaining performance, I can’t wait for the release of the final half of this Will & Patrick Wake Up Married Serial.

Loved it again :) Maybe the best feel-good romance I've ever read.
------------
Loved it to pieces! The premise was far fetched but the writing was engaging and very very witty. I especially liked Patrick's character, he was who he was and wasn't pretending to be anything else. He was also the man to push Will out of his self-loathing and learn how to stand up for himself. This is the kind of humour that gets to me and I'm happily starting the next part of the series asap, looking forward to see the two of them together for good.

Loved all three episodes of this serial series. Patrick is my favorite and he is why I love this series. Will is a sweetheart, but I relate to and care more about Patrick because he is not your regular type of MC in an M/M romance. He can be an asshole, but he's a lovable one. I'm moving on to the next three episodes and I can't wait to see what happens with these two guys.

Full review to follow soonish...well as soon as I get my rage about Will's ex under control...because rage!!! I has it!...

I've been wanting to read this one for quite a while now...

and happily I finally got the opportunity to check out the first 3 Will & Patrick stories on audio.

I have to admit I was expecting something that had more of a comedic bent to it...please don't misunderstand me, there are some humorous moments to be enjoyed in these stories, but there's also some serious stuff going down as well.

This one presents a bit of a challenge for me when it comes to how to do my review so I'm going to start with things that are common to all 3 stories in this collection, so let's start with the narrator...John Solo.

This is by no means my first John Solo audio book. Nope, this is somewhere around #10 for this narrator and I and while I enjoyed the narration there was as always for me one little niggle...children's voices...I know, I know I sound like a stuck record but it is what it is and while there wasn't a lot there were children's voices involved and sorry to say...the kids voices just weren't working for me which is why at the end of it it's only 4 stars for the narration...sorry, but it is what it is and as for the adult voices I think Will and Patrick's voices were two of Mr. Solo's better characterizations.

Now as for the story let's talk about Will's ex...Ryan. Ok, I can't lie I'm not going to talk about Ryan...I'm going to rant!!! Seriously RANT!!! Because for the life of me, I cannot understand why anyone much less everyone one, except Patrick, thought Ryan was the second coming of you know who!!! The guy was such a freakin' useless PoS!!! I couldn't stand him and the fact that Will's mother and his Uncle both thought he was just so perfect and amazing made me want to wretch and then smack them both upside the head. If my son brought someone like him home to meet me, I would flip my sh*t!!! Ok, so in case you missed it I disliked Ryan with a passion! #teamPatrickonthisone!

Now let's talk about Patrick. I liked him yes at times he was a bit to abrupt and seemed to be missing some of his basic good social skills filters...still, I'm rather someone who speaks their mind honestly than someone...like...well, someone like Ryan.

Last but not least a little bit about Will...overall I liked Will. He was sweet and trying so hard to do what was right for everyone except maybe himself. When it came to Will's family the only thing I can say is..."I'm sorry....like seriously sorry!"

Will & Patrick Wake Up Married... is the first story in this series and honestly the title says it all. I know they say that what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas....well, that's only if you didn't marry what happened in Vegas, which is what happened to Will and Patrick. When Will falls of the wagon resulting in a night of drunken debauchery the two men wake up to find that somewhere in their escapades they got married and as is often the case it's going to take more than a few minutes to undo what it took mere minutes to do.

This one got 3 stars from me because the premise intrigued me and there were definitely parts of it that I liked but at the same time things occasionally started to feel a little more convoluted than I would have liked...things like the issue between Patrick and his employer (now former employer) but still there were some good moments...like pretty much any conversation that Will and Patrick had. These two had a true love/hate relationship going on the only thing in question was whether they loved to hate each other or hated to love each other but I'm guessing that at this stage of the game even they didn't know.

Will & Patrick Meet the Family... or at least we meet Will's family. Which apparently includes his ex, Ryan? Why I ask you why would anyone include their kid's ex in family gatherings? I'm sorry I don't care how much I may like my kid's ex...my kid is my kid and his ex is just that his ex. There is no freaking way that I would ever include them...unless of course I was so oblivious to things that I couldn't see that my kids ex had a toxic personality and I somehow thought they were good for my kid...yeah, Imma' gonna' get me some of those drugs...no thanks. So in spite of the presence of Will's less than stellar ex. I actually enjoyed this episode more than the first one and for me it comes in somewhere between 3.5 - 4 stars but definitely things are heading in the right direction when it comes to holding my interest.

and the last episode in this audio book is...
Will & Patrick Do the Holidays... so I'm a bit of a Christmas fiend and this one just did it for me. It's the holidays and we all know holidays + family = stress, anxiety, drama, angst and all things that make for insanity and needless to say in this department Will's family is no different than the next persons and...before I forget there's more Ryan. But it seems that maybe cracks are starting to show in Ryan's public facade and the court of public opinion is starting to reconsider his 'golden boy' status one can only hope but even more importantly it looks like Will and Patrick are beginning to realize that while their marriage may have resulted from a moment of #badlifechoices there may be more to it than either man is willing to admit or to let go of just yet...so I'm giving this one '4 sign me up for more Will & Patrick stars' because these two are definitely taking the long and winding road to happily ever after and they've got me wanting to take the trip with them.

Ryan is a little b***! I hope he's out of the picture for good. I don't really get how he "helped" Will. By controlling his "urges"? Do they mean the alcoholism or the sex? Or both? That part is hella confusing... To me it sounds like he made Will's life miserable. And Will's family... I believe they want to help, but the stuff that comes out of their mouth tells a different story. They're holding him back.

Patrick is awesome however. Yeah he's an asshole, but at least he's honest. I like him with Will.
Imma keep reading for their HEA.

“How does he have the misfortune to be so deeply involved with a man who has more crazy in his life than a spinster has cats?

This is the best freebie I’ve yet to receive. Will & Patrick Wake Up Married is lighthearted romcom with unexpected emotional depth. Will and Patrick are cute, funny, stubborn and contrary. They bicker, banter, push and pull, but their relationship is surprisingly chaste after that momentous one night stand for several weeks. They’re both determined to divorce, but face utterly ridiculous and unrealistic obstacles. You need to suspend disbelief to enjoy this, but it’s definitely worth it.

— one night stand and Vegas wedding
— enemies-to-lovers
— grumpy/sunshine
— do gooder with inherited mafia fortune/neurosurgeon
— alcoholic/child of alcoholic
— pining for ex/severe trust issues
— OTT mafia element
— snarky humor
— great relationship development
— strong UST
— sexy times resume in book 3

I read this series last year and picked up the audios when they were whispersynced. Once you get past the daft premise, this is an entertaining, often very funny and sometimes moving story with two strongly characterised, appealing leads. Patrick - with his complete lack of filter - is a hoot, but I liked that he was just "this is me - take it or leave it", while Will lacks confidence in just about everything apart from his ability to do his job, which is incredibly important to him. Both of them have emotional baggage to deal with - Patrick has become extremely successful despite an awful childhood; Will can't see that the relationship he was in for several years was emotionally abusive and only added to his already deep-seated insecurities about his personal attractiveness and self-worth. His blindness about Ryan is irritating, but it also works to show just how far he's been manipulated and how his self-doubt has been fostered.

John Solo's narration doesn't always work for me; he's good, but he has this weird way of suddenly going into what I term "movie-trailer-announcer-mode" when his speech loses natural rhythms and he emphasises words oddly - it usually happens in sex scenes or when the characters are thinking about sex, and other times of heightened tension or emotion. I don't know whether he didn't do that as much here, or if I just didn't notice it as much once I got used to it, but he delivers a really good performance in this and his interpretations of Will and Patrick are especially good and fit their characters perfectly. Will is softly spoken, Patrick is more abrasive and his dialogue has a harsher edge. The secondary characters are well-differentiated and if it weren't for that odd quirk I mentioned, he'd be on my list of all-time favourite narrators.

What this people are smoking wasn't prescribed by a doctor... and the worse part is that it seems I've been smoking the same. I can't believe I've enjoyed this one so much.
Well, you have to suspend belief with this, but, the premise already hinted that, so I knew what I was getting into. I think it's the first time I've enjoyed a fake boyfriend/marriage situation in a novel.

Catching up on bad reviews and bad rep. This series was recently on a Neurodivergent book promo thing, which, wow. Stop promoting offensive rep.

This review is for the entire series.

I cannot believe after this book/series has already been reviewed and called out for FUCKING ABYSMAL autism rep, people are still reccing it! Holy shit, way to announce to the world that you don't give a fuck.

Other reviewers are more eloquent, I'm just going to throw the obvious out there.

Also, there's a really bizarre take on alcoholism, AA, and how AA sponsors should act, no one mentions it, but it's awful and weird.

Let's start with this:

“You’re—” Will stares at him. “Wait, hold up. You’re autistic?” “No, I’m on the spectrum. There’s a difference.” Patrick counts out five beats of Will’s heart. “You don’t see me screaming and banging my head on tables because the spaghetti noodles aren’t done, do you?”

Nice. Not offensive at all. 🙄😵‍💫

Here's the rest, I'm not going to hand feed and explain why this shit is wrong:

• “I just mean, you don’t seem to have real feelings at all. You probably don’t even know what love is.”

• He’s never been good with the social skills at the best of times. If he’d been born five or six years later than he was, he’d probably have been diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder. As it is, he’s always been inappropriate and weird and he knows he does life wrong.

• He’s a thirty- five- year- old Aspie brain surgeon with a terror of emotional intimacy.

• “I work long hours. I have a stressful career. I’m on the autism spectrum and I’m crap at social skills.”

• What does happiness even look like to Patrick? He’s admitted to being on the autism scale, and Will has no idea what that means for his ability to have romantic feelings for another person, or for Will specifically. Patrick has made it clear: work, sex, and friendship is enough for him.

• “She doesn’t know you’re on the autism spectrum.” “Oh, no you don’t.” “What?” “You don’t get to file me away like that. That’s one reason I don’t tell people.”

• Patrick shrugs. “Yeah, well, I’m telling you to shut up.”“That’s pretty rude.”“It’s established that I’m rude.” Irritation flares. “You may have some autism thing happening, but you don’t get to be an asshole.”

• Patrick turns in his seat, the bomber jacket big on his wiry frame. “What do you think it means that I’m on the autism spectrum?”“That you’re rude and don’t have a filter? That you feel stuff differently? I don’t know.” Will looks over at him. “Why?”“I am rude and filters are boring. But I feel things. I’m capable of the same feelings you are.” Patrick stares at Will. “I’m not that different from you.” Will’s stomach tenses. “You’re pretty different, Patrick. It’s not an insult. It’s just facts.”

• “Hmmph.” Patrick clicks the glove compartment open again and then shuts it. “I didn’t tell you about being on the autism spectrum so you can use it to discount me. I told you because I trust you.”“You told me because it slipped out,” Will says, running a hand into his hair.

• “It only changes things because it helps me understand you. I can put your behavior in this box labeled ‘autism’ and it’s okay. But sometimes your behavior isn’t okay, even if it’s in the box. Telling me to shut up, for example.”“I’m not a box.”

• “You and me both.” Will’s fingers are cold, but the heat is coming on in the car. “I won’t mention the autism thing again.”“Spectrum. There’s a difference. Like the difference between Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes. Like the difference between dogs and cats.”

• Several hours later, Will’s trapped in his chair by Owen and a stack of briefs to review. Owen’s discussing one of their projects with a lymphoma charity out of Denver when Will interrupts him. “What do you know about people on the autism spectrum?”

• “I’ve met the man,” Owen says, smiling his particular AA sponsor smile, the one that means he’s ‘being there’ for Will now. “Pegging him as on the spectrum isn’t too hard.”“So you don’t think he’s just a jerk or socially awkward?”“No.”“He’s—” Will recalls the word he’s seen on the grant requests he’s fielded for learning disabilities. “Not neurotypical.” Owen nods, the light through the still-closed blinds glancing off his bald head. “And you’re struggling with his atypical neurology?”

• “I need to know more. Like, does he feel the same things I do?”“He’s a human being, but, as you say, he’s not a typical one.”“He says he feels the same things…” Will trails off, thinking about Patrick’s statements about love. “But I’m not sure he knows what neurotypical people feel. How does he know it’s the same?” Owen caps his pen and leans forward, resting his elbows on his knees. “You’re wondering if he can love you.”“I know he’s capable of love.”

• “I don’t know if he understands the difference between liking someone, enjoying sex with them, and being in love with them. Maybe to him, it’s the same thing.”

I am so happy my friend suggested this book, I liked Will and Patrick in the beginning but I didn’t really fall in love with the book until about 4 hours left. Then it clicked Patrick is blunt and it’s what I love about his character. He doesn’t want to like this man Will who they did the unthinkable... Marrying a man he doesn’t know. He wants to not care, but for some reason, Will has gotten under his skin.

I like the dynamic these two have, it is very entertaining.

The narration is perfect for these two. I want more.

Even when I owed the individual parts of the serial, I was excited to have this one for my NOOK. It's just more convenient, being able to read it on an e-reader and not on a phone or computer. Since I had it on my NOOK, it was a wonderful time to revisit Will and Patrick. And let me say, I think I enjoyed the first three books of the serial just as much or even more, reading it this time.

The two of them are just so perfect for each other. I love how Patrick watches out and cares for Will, giving him that support and unconditional acceptance he's never had in his life. And Will gives Patrick that love and friendship that has been lacking in his. Watching their love start and grow is such a warm and pleasant experience.

I do have to say something about Ryan. He is a bitter and vile man, and Will is better for getting rid of him. The black vines of hatred that he has disguised and woven through Will's life, getting his family to think badly of Will still pisses me off.

*take a calming breath* Okay, now I just have to wait patiently for Episodes 4-6 to be available on B&N. Oh, who am I kidding? There will be no patience on my part. I'll be checking regularly for them.

2020 Re-Read:

Man, it sure is hard to handle Will in the beginning, lol. I just have to keep reminding myself that he gets better. Eventually.

Original 2019 Review:

I think rated all 3 of these books as 3 stars the first time through the serial, mostly, I'm sure, due to the fact that I have very little patience for doormats. Yeah, yeah, there's going to be a whole character arc where he grows as a person and learns to stand up for himself, blah, blah, blah . . . I just really can't stand the guys who let everybody walk all over them. I may understand the literary purpose here, but that doesn't make it get on my nerves any less.

But! I'm increasing the rating for this bundle to 4 stars due to the excellent audio narration. This is only the second book I've listened to from John Solo, but I'm going to make it a point to find more.

2 and 1/2 Stars. I think I’m pretty much done with this series. I just found almost every character to be unlikeable. Will is so boring and needy that he got on my nerves. If they hadn’t made Ryan such an ass I wouldn’t have blamed him for dumping Will. Most of Will’s family were awful and not the least bit supportive. Finally there’s Patrick. He’s the one person in this story that I grew to like. At first he came across as a horrible person, but he’s just hiding all the hurt he feels inside.

I listened to this as an audiobook ( I don’t think I would have finished it if I was reading the kindle version.) John Solo did an incredible job. The only way I would consider going forward is if he records the rest of the book.

As I started reading this collection of the first three stories in the serial, I very nearly gave up and put it down to a bad purchase, even though it was an Amazon freebie. By the end of this collection, book 3 - I was straight back to the Kindle store to purchase part 2, episodes 4-6, I was so enjoying the tragedy that was Will and Patrick's marriage, the humour, the snark, the characters.
Ok, at times the story is a little corny, perhaps I was in the mood for something less taxing, but I actually enjoyed it for what it was, light and humorous.

Audiobook review provided through Scattered Thoughts and Rogue Words

OMG! I was hooked within the first ten minutes of this 11 1/2 hour audiobook. John Solo did a spectacular job interpreting the humor the authors infused throughout every page. His vocalizations and sound effects were spot-on. And the voice he gave each of the MCs was perfect for their characters.

I already hit one-click to purchase the second volume: books 4-6 in e-book format because I cannot wait one moment to pick up where this one left off. Will I listen to the audio when it comes out? If John Solo narrates it, you bet I will. And I very highly recommend everyone hurry to pick up this audiobook. This will most definitely make your day.

Quick summary – Will Patterson is a sweetheart—a young man who suffers from type I diabetes and is attempting to recover from alcoholism. He slips spectacularly at a medical conference in Las Vegas and finds himself married to neurosurgeon Dr Patrick McCloud. For financial reasons, they can’t divorce or have the marriage annulled. Will’s connected to organized crime and the funds he inherited through the mob side of the family, with which he’s doing altruistic work to help the people in his town, will disappear if he doesn’t marry for love and/or if he ever divorces or annuls his marriage.

Patrick can’t believe his luck. Bad luck, that is. Well, maybe not. Will is hot and as time goes by Patrick finds more to love than not love about Will. Patrick is full of snark and vinegar though, and God forbid anyone find out he’s really a nice guy. No way.

One major problem, other than the fact they got drunk married, is that Will is not over his ex. Ryan is annoying and very passive-aggressive and quite full of himself. I am hoping he gets his comeuppance by the end of the series. In the meantime, this volume ends on a high note. The guys have decided to stay together for now, enjoying a friends-with-benefits sort of relationship, with all the sex Will wants, and that’s something the never had with Ryan. Patrick’s heart seems to be getting engaged, so I have no doubt the next volume is going to be a treat. And I’m starting that the minute I finish this review.

Most highly recommended! In audio, for sure.

At first, I didn't think I would care for this series. Patrick was seriously a dick (but he does have a bigger heart than he lets on) and Will acts kind of like a a spineless doormat to everyone else in his life (especially his ex and family.)

The secondary characters were a mixed bag, some were endearing and others were just assholes. I don't think I would like to live in that town to be honest. And as I started liking Patrick more, even though he could be acerbic, I didn't appreciate how Will's family was treating him like dirt. He didn't deserve it IMO.

I will keep reading because I liked the ending of episode 3 and I LOVE Leta Blake's writing.

Though it took me a while to warm to Patrick's abrasive nature, once I did he quickly became my favourite.
They do things a bit backward and you have to wait for anything else to happen between them physically, the first part happens off page.
Immediately moving to parts 4-6

I'm sorry but:

- I knew I was going to hate this a whole twelve pages into chapter one when this happens: "Don't tell me, let me guess: you're married to a woman. Does she even know you're gay? Are you that deep in the closet?" WAY TO WRITE OFF BISEXUALS AGAIN, PEOPLE. Let's just be clear here: I am bisexual, more or less. And it pisses me off something chronic when people act like they're open-minded (as you'd imagine women writing M/M literature would be) and then ignore anyone who doesn't fit into some binary concept of sexuality.

- Present tense narration can work, sometimes. Most of those "sometimes" are in the first person, adding a sense of immediacy to the narrative. It almost never works in the third person.

- A Catholic grandfather wanting a man to stay married to another man seems utter bullshit. I don't think Catholics would consider that a marriage at all. Ergo, stupid premise.

- M/M is not for me. I don't care if two men want to fuck. I really don't. But it leaves me cold and I just don't want to read about how anyone is bowlegged from being fucked up the arse, regardless of gender.

This is the first 3 episodes of a 6 episode series. The two wake up married in Vegas after a drunken yet epic sexual escapade. And the panic begins. They are complete strangers. And Will's inheritance codicil prevents getting a divorce, or he looses the ability to save lives.

I am in love with Patrick and Will. They are so perfect for each other, even if they don't act on it, for oh so long. This is a slow burn romance. You can just see the the electricity crackle off the two the entire time, yet they refuse to acknowlege it.

Patrick starts off as such an asshat. He has such a thick hard shell built around himself, no people skills, a sarcastic mouth that offends everyone. Yet, as time goes on, you see he has purposefully built this ass hole personality as a type of self protection to hide behind. But he's honest and never abuses. I think he actually falls in love with very near the beginning of the series, but Will is still pining after his ex. Overall, Patrick makes me laugh. My kind of humor. (Yeah, sick, I know)

Will has major issues, yet he's still so lovable. I can't believe how his family and ex have done such a mental job on him. But he is driven to make good with the mafia inherited money. He just doesn't know good or healthy love, even healthy honest sex, after evil ex, Ryan. Will's character has some major growth to go through in this series.

I looking forward to the next volume of episodes 4-6. I want to see how they grow together and have that happy ending they so deserve!

Read the first three books in one gobble so gonna review all three. Patrick is the highlight of these books for me. I want to read more about this adorable man who hides under all the snark and rudeness.
Will had me going back and forth between wanting to protect him and wanting to shake him silly. I needed to see him pull himself out from under all these people who were making him miserable. I begun to see a little of that in the third book. Hopefully the rest of the series will see him standing up for himself more.
Which brings me to Ryan. How it takes so long for Will to finally see him for who he is, is beyond me. I think sometimes when we only see ourselves through other peoples eyes, we forget who we really are. And Will's view of himself was often through the mirror that belonged to Ryan, or his mother Kimberly.
Looking forward to what the rest of the series has to hold.

What happens in Vegas doesn’t always stay in Vegas……

So what does happen when you’re drunk in Las Vegas? Let’s see…. either you found yourself in a casino gambling away all of your money. Or you made use of one of the many chapels and got married and have some very enthusiastic sex to celebrate the union. Then you woke up in the morning only to realise that the person next to you isn’t only a stranger but also your husband. At least that happened to Will Patterson and Patrick McCloud. Due to the previously mentioned enthusiastic and all night celebration, an annulment is not viable and a divorce is tricky to say the least – especially since a very catholic mafia boss who don’t’ believe in divorce for his family is holding the purse strings. (And yes, that part is exactly as ridiculous as it sounds). Then you add in alcohol addiction and an on and off again boyfriend and this tale is full of drama and it’s messier than a two-year old eating spaghetti.

We follow Will and Patrick from that moment when they wake up in a hotel in Vegas and realise they were married and then tried to rectify that. Then there is meeting with Will’s family and the town’s people, convincing everyone that theirs is a love match. All at the same time as recruiting a select few of Will’s family to see how they can dissolve the marriage. Add in an alcohol addiction and a truly beyond awful (and mentally abusive) ex-boyfriend and things are never dull in this town. Oh, and I forgot to mafia mention the henchmen sent to spy on the newlyweds to make sure things were in order.

Will Patterson is troubled I guess you might say. He probably won’t agree with you but still. His ex-boyfriend Ryan mentally abused and gaslighted him for years. Making him believe that he wasn’t worth anything and everything was his fault etc etc. Let me give you an example of how “thoughtful” he was: when breaking up with Will this time around he did it over the phone, knowing that Will (a recovering alcoholic) was in a bar in Vegas. Very nice of him wouldn’t you say? And as far as his alcohol addiction goes, I don’t know if I believe in it beyond a convenient plot device. I’m far from an expert in addiction and knows everyone reacts differently, but beyond a call or text to his sponsor his addiction was very superficial, no cravings or need for it what so ever – despite falling off the proverbial wagon in Vegas.

I was not and probably am still not all that fond of Patrick, forgive me doctor McCloud. He was an ass of ginormous proportions. Always putting everyone down for not being smart enough, rich enough and everything his prejudice mind could think of. He had two saving graces though; mostly he never did that out of spite or malice, he’s just so unfamiliar with others feelings and never really took the time to learn basic social skills. Secondly underneath (way, way down) he hides a big and generous heart that only a very select few gets to see. I like seeing how slowly (very slowly) Patrick changes, opens up and becomes more caring of others and not only about himself or his work. He still has a long way to go, but I celebrate each step forward.

As strangely as it sounds I did enjoy listening to this book – or books if you will. It’s flawed sure, but I do like and enjoy the potential. It also contains much more drama than I normally would like, and don’t get me started on the whole mafia plot line. But I must have been in the right mood for this story as I did have a good time listening to it.

This wasn’t my favourite narration by John Solo. Mainly because it felt like he was trying to oversell it. You know like those commercial voices trying to convince you to buy stuff you don’t really need. Solo felt like that – especially with his interpretation of Patrick and his douchedness. But guess what – I really disliked him to begin with and his narration didn’t exactly make things better, it just became too much. As far as the rest goes I really enjoyed it with good pacing and enunciation. His interpretation of Will was really good and meshed better with his personality.

Will and Patrick’s story isn’t over yet, in truth it’s only just begun and I’m looking forward to see what else will happen to these guys.
