The Misfits #1

Chasing Ginger

Rate this book
Chased by a group of angry men. Saved by quite a hunk. This is not the résumé Ginger Halloway ever imagined having. But thanks to a miracle pill, which makes her size 22 body instantly sexy, that’s what happened.Yet, now Lance Franklin is showing interest in her, and she can’t figure out if he really likes her for her, or if it’s just because of a bizarre drug. And her wild bunch of friends, The Misfits…well, they’re always getting her into some interesting situations. So, yep, business as usual. Except for the guy. What the hell should she do about him?As for Lance, he believes he’s lucky to have found Ginger. But can he convince her they should go for it?With some new attention from the hottest guy she’s ever met, Ginger can’t help but wonder…is this all too good to be true?(CONTENT Watch for foul language, steamy scenes, and a pesky yet messy ability to choke on your dinner while laughing. If you’ve come expecting just a lighthearted, slapstick romance, you may not get that here. The author approaches sensitive topics in the best way she knows how. Just be prepared for all the feels to be deeper than usual for this genre – an emotional romantic comedy. No unruly cliffhangers, HEA guaranteed.)

Chasing Ginger is a fun and entertaining romantic comedy about a woman who takes a pill that is supposed to make her instantly sexy to men. When a date night goes chaotically and dangerously wrong, Ginger is rescued by Lance, who is instantly smitten with the voluptuous beauty. However, does Lance really like Ginger, and how will he react when he learns about her miracle pill?

Ginger is such a relatable character. She is smart and independent. She looks good and feels good, but she doesn’t fit the societal mold. She isn’t thin, and she doesn’t have a perfect body. Ginger deals with self-esteem issues, self-doubt, and insecurities. As a plus-size woman, Ginger faces prejudice and judgment, and, because of the life-long shame that comes with being a big woman, she often questions her worth. She basically resigns herself to the fact that she will end up alone because she believes men don’t find her body attractive. She also gives up her dream of becoming a singer and has trouble believing that Lance finds her attractive. How terrible is that? Sadly, this is reality. There are some excellent social statements in this book about prejudice, body shame, the desire to be accepted, and loving the skin you’re in that I think will resonate with readers.

As a curvy woman myself, I totally relate to the conflicting emotions that Ginger often feels. Confidence is very easily stripped away when people constantly consider you less than because of your weight (or for any other reason). However, between Lance and The Misfits, Ginger slowly tries to see herself as others see her – as a beautiful, vivacious woman. This proves difficult, considering the years of shame and judgment she’s experienced even at the hands of her family.

The way Lance feels about Ginger and the way that he talks about her is positively swoon-worthy. He is sure of what he wants, and, intuitively, knows he must be patient. I love how much Lance admires Ginger and how attracted he is, not just to her body, but to her. He sees the whole woman, and he likes what he sees. In turn, Ginger sees more than just a handsome face and money, which is a change for Lance. As a wealthy man, he often attracts the wrong kind of woman, and he finds Ginger refreshing, honest, and sincere. What’s interesting is that Ginger and Lance both feel undeserving of each other and have to examine these feelings before they can truly give their hearts to each other. They make a wonderful pair, and I love their budding relationship.

Ginger also receives support from The Misfits, a fantastic group of loyal and supportive friends. I love this unique group of women. They are all unique and dynamic individuals, and they are a strong and supportive unit. I can’t wait to learn more about each woman in the future books in this series!

This is a fun contemporary rom-com with great characters and a sexy romance. Thanks so much to the author for a copy of the book in exchange for my honest and fair review.

What if all your problems could be solved by taking one pill? Sounds pretty amazing, doesn't it? But would not it be interesting to know what that would look like?
So much about that, we can find out in this story, how to solve our problems with one pill, far-fetched, unreal - maybe, but still interesting to read.

A smart, independent and so real person, but still not suitable according to social norms and standards of beauty. Without self-confidence and full of uncertainty, marked by the fact that her confection number is slightly higher than acceptable according to some preset norms. Yes, that's the reality of our Ginger, and of so many women in the world. Should a few pounds more limit our dreams? Does a few pounds more mean that we don't deserve to be loved and cherished? Do a few pounds more determine what we should be by profession? Reading about Ginger, we wonder if we should submit to society or accept our own skin. Outside of our own body we just can't, but can we accept it?

Torn emotions, insecurities, prejudices ... are part of the daily life of all of us. Although sometimes we try our best to do what we can, it is simply not always enough to meet certain norms. Ginger is fun, friendly in every sense of the word, professional, yet not good enough by some pre-set criteria.
The solution is simple, the magic pill and all its problems are solved. Pills and suddenly she becomes incredibly attractive, without any physical change. A magnet for men .... Who will now defend her from the crowd of men who are chasing her everywhere?

Yes, Lance, her prince on a white horse, appears. Lance is a successful business man, but he does not believe easily and somehow seems restrained. Time passes slowly, their interactions increase, the romance begins to bloom, to shine in full glory. Living in her skin becomes simply magical, but is it because of the pills or because of her?

Whether to indulge in the wings of love or to think once again about what kind of woman Lance needs according to socially acceptable norms, which are strictly defined in this regard
What type of woman suits him, according to his appearance and status. An interesting twist, once condemned, Ginger easily condemns Lance and places him in a certain category.

But what will happen when he finds out about the magic pill? Can a group of friends help?

An amazing story that you should definitely read. A great read through which, this gifted author in an effective and humorous way reflects something that is so constant in everyday life, something that each of us has faced at least once in our lives. Definitely worthwhile.

Chasing Ginger is a cute story with some darkness thrown in. The idea of a pill called InstaSin to help make romantic dreams come true seemed a little far-fetched since if you don’t have good self esteem to begin with then a pill isn’t going to help. The strange things that did occur that could have been caused by the pill were sometimes frightening.

When Ginger and Lance first meet it was interesting that he was her knight in shining armor and how what should have been a chance occurrence turned into so much more until it wasn’t. They definitely had chemistry and felt a zing but is it just being in the right place at the right time or due to the little red pill? I liked their interactions and how he tried to help her in social situations but she still had doubts that he liked her and could it the attraction be from the pill that he’s not even aware of?

There were twists and turns to the story. Her friends, the misfits as they call themselves, were always there for each other when needed. All the characters had a depth to them. What you see is not always what you get! It was fun to see Ginger start to rely on Lance and enjoy what they had together – especially the steamy moments – until doubts would once again surface. Ginger is a big girl who doesn’t see why someone like Lance – a CEO and billionaire – would even want to be with her. There are laughter and tears, friends and family, pasts to reveal as well as hopes and dreams along with romance, between the sheet moments and ultimately love. There is some closure and a happily ever after in the offing but much more story to tell.

Ms. Lavender writes books in multiple genres. I’ve read some of her historical fiction and paranormal books and now a romantic comedy. I look forward to reading more of her books.

A romantic comedy with a difference. It is fast-paced setting allows you to enjoy the quirky moments while you get lost in the easy flow.
Chasing Ginger is a unique plot that begins with a mysterious pill that promises the most unbelievable things to any woman that feels neglected by Cupido.
When Ginger Halloway applied to the experiment, she had no idea how her life would change. Due to her, not so popular size, she had almost given up on the right man. But an impromptu meeting led to a ride in the limo which led to... no spoiler alert here.
If you are looking for a quick chick-lit read, then this is your book. The characters are flawed in a beautiful emphatic way which made it believable while the fun never stops when the Misfits steps in.
And the hunk? Well... heavy sigh - dreamy look.
Do I need to say more... use your imagination and get on the ride of InstaSin.

Ginger Holloway is a big girl, and she feels very self-conscious about it. She is adequately content in her job, loves her friends, but wants to find love. She finds herself part of a medical study – to try and test InstaSin. It’s a pill that will make you suddenly more attractive, without actually changing anything about you physically. When Lance Franklin rescues her from a mob of men chasing her, and continues to show a lot of interest in her, she can’t help but wonder if it’s because of the pill’s influence or because of herself.

Ginger is fun, but very insecure. Lance is a successful business man, but he doesn’t trust easily and holds a lot of himself back in his interactions with Ginger. They started spending more time together when they partnered up for a dance event, and eventually became romantically involved.
Just as Ginger expects people to have some preconceived ideas about her weight, which they may or may not have, she has a lot of preconceived ideas about Lance as well. She had her mind firmly made up about what she believes is his type of woman, or what he thinks of her house, or her car. And she doesn’t even seem to realize that she is putting him in a specific box. This played out when, predictably, Lance finds out about the pill and breaks up with her, because he doesn’t trust her motives. She is convinced that it’s just impossible for a man like him to want to be with a woman like her.

I was happy to see that Ginger seemed to have gained a bit more self-confidence towards the end, and that ultimately she was able to believe Lance when he told her how he saw her.

This was really sweet, but moved very slowly. The idea of such a pill is an intriguing one, and begs the question – if you could, should you do it?

Thank you to the author for providing me with a copy for review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Ginger, a plus-sized beauty, after having a dating dry spell decides to do a medical trial for InstaSin, a drug that makes you more attractive to men. After taking her first pill she uploads a new video and picture to a dating site and is shocked by the overwhelmingly positive responses she gets. She decides to take her new attractiveness for a test drive by speed dating a few of them, but it doesn't go well at all! The men show up at the same time and start fighting over her, Ginger high tails it out of the bar and is chased down the road, where a handsome stranger hides her from the hoard of lusting men.

Lance is one hot businessman and a gentleman too! He's just the kind of guy who would never go Ginger so he must be nice and attentive because of InstaSin. Ginger can't help but take advantage of the "side effects" from the pill and continues to see Lance knowing that she'll get heartbroken in the end.

Being plus-sized, I could totally relate to this book, and Ginger and Lance's story. When the world seems to be full of "Instagram" perfection and the media full of photoshopped "perfection", it's hard to remember that we are perfectly and wonderfully made just being ourselves. There will always be a Lance for us, if we just open our eyes, believe me I found mine! This is my absolute favorite read of the year! A very sexy and fun read!

I was worried about starting this book. The blurb made me worry it would be a fatphobic book.

I ended up enjoying it.

My issues...
1. It was longer than necessary. Some of it was just tedious.
2. She's "not a full on feminist". Ugh.
3. Sleeping with someone for the first time and she says, "It's okay. I'm on the pill." I'm so tired of these dumb women who don't use condoms. It's not romantic. It's fucking stupid!

HOWEVER....It's the first plus size heroine I've read that was over a size 18! A size 22! I'm still waiting for bigger sizes but this was a huge step! For that reason, I gave it 4 stars instead of 3.

Oh, what a fun romance comedy this was! I love Ginger! As a larger woman, I can relate to her concerns but I, too, am a confident person about who I am. Taking a pill to fix all your problems. Hmmm, wouldn't that be nice! Fun and full of adventure! I really enjoyed reading this book! Look forward to more in the Misfits series!

Ginger doesn't fit in regular size clothing, and it's getting to her. When she sees an ad for a miracle pill that suppose to make her instantly attractive to the opposite sex, she jumps at the change.

And against all expectations, it works. She arranger a speed date, that ends up with her running from a group of men, that all want her, right into the arms of Lance.

Lance is a successful businessman, who seems to instantly like her. But isn't the pill, or does he just like her for herself.

Ginger is a very complex character. She has so much to offer but constantly puts herself down, because of her size. Lance seems to be like a perfect match for her but filled with self-doubt and bad self-image, it's extremely difficult for her to accept that.

The romance, it's slow to develop but incredibly sweet.

I really like the premise of the story and the storyline itself, but I wished the pace was a bit quicker. The story seems to move very slowly at times. While I liked Ginger and Lance, I wasn't the biggest fan of the dialog.

Reading the back cover, I thought of Eddie Murphy in “The nutty Professor”

Ginger is a “full figured” feisty female. Her outlook on life ? She’s come to finally accept she won’t ever be a “conventional” size, that doesn’t mean she’s happy, but happy enough. So when she gets the chance at a “miracle” pill to help with her weight, Ginger signs up.....

But what she gets isn’t a slimming pill, it’s a pill that makes her a magnet for men!!

I laughed through most of the book. It’s hilarious, the dance competition was great, but the downside of this book was the fear she had when men wouldn’t take the hint and leave her alone!!

But her guardian angel keeps stepping in to save her.....I liked this story, very descriptive, really well written, it’s a struggle most women have at least once in there life, the struggle to keep the weight off, will they be attractive? Will anyone ever see past the “fat suit”? Loved her college friends, they’d clubbed together and called themselves “The Misfits”, they were a great bunch of friends, always had Ginger’s back. She knew she could rely on them, and friends like that are hard to find.

So what happens with Lance and Ginger? Will she be able to tell him the pills are making him want her? Because he couldn’t want her, could he?

And if Lance ever finds out that she’s taking pills, would he ever forgive her? I’m hoping the misfits find their stories too.

Marie Lavender – Chasing Ginger – Reviewed 1/16/20 – Read 1/15/20
Does a dress Size make a person? I don’t think so, but let’s hear from Ginger’s Point of view!!

Ginger Holloway grew up being told that she was overweight and should do anything possible to lose it. She tried everything and it just would not go away. Men seem to shy away from her and finally, accepting the fact that she was going to be a size 22 forever, gave her some peace. While in college some of her friends named their group as “The Misfits” and it sure seemed appropriate. One day Ginger ran across an ad for a trail to take a miracle pill that would give her the opportunity for the type of relationship that she had only dreamed about. Taking the leap, and signing a nondisclosure statement. Meaning she could not tell anyone that she was taking the pill till after the trial was over. She set up a dating app and posted a profile, that night she had numerous offers for dates. Arranging to meet a few of them after work. She showed up and it turned into a madhouse. Leaving the establishment and running for home, she was chased by some angry men. As she was at the point of exhaustion and the men were not letting, she was pulled into a short stairway and shielded. The voice was so soothing and made her relax even though she was scared. After the angry men passed she turned to take in her savior. Wow, he was sure a looker!!! His offer to take her on to where she was going was accepted, but she was flabbergasted when he ordered his car to pull up in the garage so that they did not have to traverse the front walkway. After visiting her doctor to check out the pills from InstaSin she allowed him to take her home.

When she was out with the Misfits a few nights later she ran into the mysterious savior again. After her girlfriends decided that he would be perfect for her, they invited him to be her partner in the upcoming dance contest. A charity benefit supporting domestic violence survivors. Lance Franklin agreed to be her partner, and Ginger could not believe that he would have anything to do with her, given her size and how good looking he was. On top of that, he was a billionaire. How could a man like that be interested in someone like her????

What did I like? This storyline hit a mark with me. After I quit smoking (many years ago) I gained a ton of weight, and it has been a struggle ever since. I have recently lost (in a healthy way) quite a bit. At this point, I am almost back to my normal weight and size. Having gone through years of that myself, I can relate to how Ginger felt.

What will you like? Emotional struggle, romantic, funny, and enduring. The storyline is fantastic, addressing an age-old problem that many women have struggled through and shows that it can be different. Many of the issues that women have with weight are addressed and done in a forthright manner. It is a shame that the world, in general, is not taught from a young age, that weight should not be a factor. The heart is the most beautiful thing in a person and we should all judge from that and not the dress size. I loved the way the author addressed all those problems and showed the effects that they have on a person. Awesome read!!!

Discontent with her non-existing love life and lacking confidence in her body image, Ginger decides to take part in a drug trial that claims the drug will make her irresistible to the opposite sex. Giddy with the prospects of finding romance, Ginger signs up for an online dating service. Overnight she receives an influx of online requests for a date from prospective boyfriends. Ginger decides on back-to-back speed dating to vet a handful of the potential suitors. Little did she know she would be chased by a lustful mob, which drops her into the arms of hunky rich guy who smells so delicious. Unsure if it is the effect of the wonder drug, Ginger has misgivings regarding the attention this dream guy is giving her.

Marie Lavender writes a humourous meaningful story, in Chasing Ginger. I rarely laugh out loud when I read, I have a very selective humour, but I did find myself giggling at some of the scenes in Chasing Ginger. Marie’s writing made everyday situations sound interesting. Whilst this is a humorous read, it also delivers a meaningful message of accepting ourselves for who we are and to take a leap of faith in our own abilities, like we so often do in others. A truly delightful read.

I give this book 4 stars

This book does come with a content warning for foul language and steamy scenes. Ginger is a full figured gutsy woman who has come to the realisation that she is never going to be the right size so decides to take a chance on a diet pill, what she doesn't realise though that this pill makes men come at her like a magnet. It is a really funny story and I couldn't stop laughing, it is a well written story with a unique story line, the only thing I worried about was the fact that the men wouldn't leave Ginger alone. It is an issue I think that many women struggle with including myself. I think it has been written well. I look forward to book 2 in the misfits series.

Chasing Ginger is a fun and engaging romantic comedy, with a certainly original plot and some great messages - namely that we all need to accept ourselves the way we are ("accept what we're given", in Ginger's words) and that no matter how much of a "misfit" you think you are, there's always someone out there just perfect for you. It's also refreshing to read a book where the main character isn't runway-model shaped.
My only concern (and the reason why I'm not rating this book with five stars) is that some parts of the book do seem a bit silly and kind of detract from the important messages.

Perfect for Each Other

I am a plus size woman and wasn’t sure how I’d relate to Ginger. Every big girl’s experience is different. Ginger is awesome! Her issues with her weight stem from her childhood and her mother’s “helpful” comments that stung and hurt. However, she’s beautiful, smart, successful, and talented. She counters a deep seated belief that her size makes her undesirable with a fantastic sense of style and being loving and loyal to her college friends, the Misfits. Over the course of the story, she learns to better accept herself and resolves some issues.

This is an excellent HEA with steamy sex scenes. I especially liked how Ginger’s look was described. She has great hair, dresses well; and is active, graceful, and a great dancer. Lance even enjoys watching her run. San Francisco also shines in the tale.

Watch out for realistic descriptions of what it’s like to live with curves, especially big boobs and rubbing thighs. Ginger’s negative self-talk and bad memories are truthfully given. The book is funny, but can feel depressing at times when Ginger just can’t accept how attractive she really is.

Lance has his own foibles that make him more likable. It’s awesome to experience his point of view: “Pink” and “soft” are good things for a female to have in his bed. The POV changes are clearly marked and not too distracting. Their love story is believable and sweet. It’s also fraught with misconceptions because neither can raise their issues with the other. Without the dual POV, you’d wonder why they get together.

The downsides to this story are minimal. I felt that the attraction pill study was too lightly used. I’d have liked to see more guys attracted to Ginger in competition with Lance instead of attacking her. The misunderstandings and unspoken yearning between Lance and Ginger from their “attraction” phase until “sex” seemed to drag. However the ending was awesome. A fight between two hot guys at Ginger’s parents’ house before Thanksgiving dinner was a nice way to get to a satisfying resolution.

I hope we get to see more of the Misfits in Marie’s books!

Chasing Ginger by Marie Lavender

Ginger Halloway is desperate enough for a male companionship to sign up for an experimental drug testing program, for a new drug called Instasin. The doctors report the pill contains pheromones to attract the opposite sex. Her only obligation is to keep a journal while taking the pills. After three months the guinea pigs would report back with their findings.

Ginger is a smart, savvy, and mostly comfortable in her plus size body. She has beat down her insecurities about her weight, instilled from her parents while growing up. She tries to look at things through realistic eyes. When she meets Lance through happenstance she is immediately smitten. When Lance seems to be pursuing her, she writes it off as ‘the instasin’ effect. There is no way an intelligent, handsome, rich man could be interested in her.

“Chasing Ginger” is a unique, intelligent story that will capture your heart. Their journey together and apart shows character growth and acceptance. Ginger’s group of close friends, the Misfits, add levity and a sense of realism. Ms. Lavender takes a serious subject and has written an entertaining tale with smart dialogue and heart.

FYI: “Chasing Ginger” is book 1 in Ms. Lavender’s, Misfits Series. Several F-bombs are dropped, and graphic sex scenes. **Originally written for "Books and Pals" book blog. May have received a free review copy.** November 12, 2020

Fun Romance and more

Lavender pens a comedic romantic story in Chasing Ginger. I have read work from this author before, and I really enjoyed it. Ginger is a great character and is a little self-conscious but fun, as she fits in with her friends lovingly called the Misfits. This author brings the stories to life, and while most of the story is fun and lighthearted, emotions while reading and with the characters, can run very deep. Lance and Ginger had chemistry that wasn't forced, and they could get very steamy, but it was so much more than attraction, and a lot of self-doubts. It's a great story to follow and try to figure out what will happen next. I look forward to reading many more stories by this author. This book is a definite recommendation by Amy's Bookshelf Reviews.
