Rich Evans is desperate to say goodbye to his past in New York and embrace a future in Waterton with fiancee Louise Newman, a small-town mechanic with an uncanny gift of foresight. But even Lou's warnings are not enough to avoid the new troubles threatening the isolated border town. Rich returns to Waterton to discover the body of his estranged ex-girlfriend has been found in a remote mountain lake.
Constable Sadie Black Plume uncovers grisly details linking Gabrielle's murder to a web of organized crime with connections to all layers of Waterton's close-knit community. With Rich as the main suspect, Rich and Lou are forced to prove his innocence in a small town where the term 'outsider' can be applied to anyone who wasn't born there.
Disclaimer: I received this E-ARC via the author for partaking in the street team and in exchange for an honest review.
Trigger Warning(s): Animal cruelty.
Rep: Audrika and Vasur are Indian-Canadian. Louise is half Canadian half Japanese.
My Thoughts Before Reading: Having read and thoroughly enjoyed the previous instalments, I was very excited to read this conclusion!
I enjoyed Fall of Night!
What I Liked: Just like the previous instalments, the mystery was exciting! It kept me on the edge of my seat, whilst I continued to guess who did it. I guessed some parts correctly, but did not see that big reveal coming!
I enjoyed learning more about Rich and his life before Waterton. I also thoroughly enjoyed that Fall of Night has such a large focus on Sadie. It was fun being in her head, while she worked on the murder cases. And of course to read about her relationship with her new partner as well as Lou (towards the end).
Lou and Rich’s relationship is tested in this instalment. With Rich lying to her in the beginning, and Lou trying to choose how to react to all the new information about Rich.
The two of them managed to work through all of the obstacles, and come out stronger. I loved reading about their wedding and that last page!
My Criticism(s): It took a long time before the mystery hooked me. I didn’t care for Gabby so I think that’s why I wasn’t invested in the beginning.
I didn’t see the point reading in Bryce and his girlfriend’s point of view. It added nothing to the plot.
I was really disappointed when Audrika was murdered. She is my favourite character after Lou.
Conclusion: Overall I enjoyed Fall of Night. I highly recommend this series for mystery lovers.
I was thrilled to receive an ARC of Fall of Night.
With a new deadly event shattering the quiet aftermath of Dark Divide, this final installment brings with it many threads from the Edge of Night and Dark Divide to the culmination of decades of secrets and cover-ups that have shaken the small mountain town of Waterton.
Where people can be more dangerous than nature, and not everything can be explained.
This is a satisfying ending to a three course meal of artfully painted locales, thoughtful insights into small town Canada, and a meaty layered mystery.
An excellent finale to the Waterton Seres. With lots of twists and turns, FALL OF NIGHT had me hooked from the beginning--great pacing. Returning to familiar characters and settings was like visiting old friends.
Still finding his way within the tight knit community of Waterton, Richard Evans must prove his innocence when his former girlfriend's body is found in a mountain lake. While Rich and his fiancé, Louise Newman, carry the bulk of the mystery, Constable Black Plume's investigations keeps the tension ramped up. Minor characters are quirky but believable and D.K. Stone has done a wonderful job of world building.
I highly recommend the first two books in the series as well: EDGE OF WILD and THE DARK DIVIDE.
I guess that this is the third book in the series, but I didn’t realize that until I was well into it. The good thing is that it stands pretty well on its own. I just hope that it hadn’t spiked the first two books for me, because this one was so good I want the read the others. The book is set in southwestern Alberta, primarily the Waterton region. Thus is a part of the province I love, but only get to visit on occasion. I appreciated the description of the landscape and weather. It is a solid mystery with a bit of a Canadian flair. I could have done without the supernatural aspects of the film, but they come with the story, so I just accepted them. A great book. Very entertaining.
I think Fall of Night was the perfect ending to Danika's Waterton series. It might actually be my favorite of the series. It did a spectacular job of wrapping up the decades of secrets and cover-ups in the town. It has a great pace and is full of intrigue. I also love the quirky characters and Danika's ability to put the reader in the action and world of Waterton.
I highly recommend reading Fall of Night, but also the other books in the series, Edge of Wild and The Dark Divide.
This was a great ending to this thrilling series. The twists and turns made it and edge of your seat story that I just couldn't put down. The stakes are even higher in this one and once you start you won't be able to stop until the very last page.
