The Fae Wars #1

Bound to the Dark Prince

Rate this book
Two ancient courts at war. One Unseelie prince that yearns for peace.

The first time I see him the world tilts off its axis. His eyes flash like quicksilver as they travel up my body. His lips, sensuous and wicked, tick up into a small smile that says I see you looking at me. I should have listened to my instincts: no one that attractive could be human.

When I wake up in another realm, I very quickly learn three things about Cassiel: he's stupid hot, he's a Dark fae prince, and he's terrifying.

So, like any sensible girl, I run away, looking for a way back home. But the surprises keep on coming as I try to stay alive in a world that's as beautiful as it is lethal.

It turns out I’m not as mortal as I thought I was. There are secrets about my past I can't escape.
And the Dark prince?
He's my blood enemy.

Aria Lovely’s debut novel is a sweeping, sumptuous fantasy romp with a dash of sizzling romance. If you enjoy a slow-burn enemies-to-lovers saga, the Fae Wars trilogy is for you!

DNF at 25%

In this world, Seelie fae and Unseelie fae are mortal enemies, and just associating with a fae from the opposing realm is enough to be condemned to death. Cassiel is the heir of the Unseelie court and can’t wait for the day he is finally powerful enough to kill his father. He learns from someone part of the Seelie court that the Seelie princess is alive, and hidden in the human realm.

He then forms a simple plan, he will find the Seelie princess of the summer court (who is also named Summer, because why not?), force her to mate with him so he can access her powers and be strong enough to finally kill his father. But of course, he is repulsed by the mere idea of having to be physically close to a Light fae because they are mortal enemies.

I step into the room a few more feet, entranced by her. She is beautiful, but unremarkably so—she does not even approach the beauty of the fae. And yet, I could look at her like this for a hundred years and never tire of it. I realize, startled, that my cock is rock hard. Well, perhaps I desire for more than just looking. She is not truly mortal, I remind myself. She is Light fae. She should repulse me.

Well hello weird insta-lust… but I guess it’s okay since she also feels so aroused by him, when she wakes up shackled to a bed in a mysterious and dark place and sees him come into the room half-naked (girl, you need to get a grip 😖).

Wicked and dangerous. It’s in every line of his body; in the cool confidence he wears like a second skin. Somehow, unbelievably, I find myself getting aroused, my face flushing as my breathing shallows.
(…)
I’m suddenly hyper-aware of my vulnerability. I’m literally at his mercy. He can do whatever he wants to me, and I can’t stop him. Even worse, I’m not even sure I would want to stop him. I helplessly imagine his hard, muscled body driving into mine, and I flush, my breathing deepening at the image.

Cassiel is just a big jerk with no redeeming qualities. He is arrogant and manipulative, and I can’t stand him. Summer is naïve and insta-lusts about the guy who just kidnapped her, that’s just weird. I love hate-to-love relationships, but in this case, it’s just weird and icky because there is no depth, no connection between the characters, and no building at all.

The plot is not that engaging either, the first 25% is mostly about Cassiel wondering why he feels attracted to a light fae and Summer thinking about how good it would feel to have Cassiel touch her everywhere.

This book is not for me. The hero is a gross specimen of a guy and I hate everything about him. He arrogant, manipulative, and an overall jerk. How the author is going to redeem all that I don't know nor do I care to find out.

The heroine insta-lusts after the guy even after he kidnaps her. It just feels icky to me. The story also paints her as this powerful being but she's really naive. This probably will change as the story progresses but I do not plan on being around to witness it.

The story wasn't all that engaging. It was rather slow-paced and pretty much bored me into DNFing. The writing style wasn't bad but it didn't pull me in either, so do with that as you will.

Bound to the Dark Prince (The Fae Wars Book 1)

ARC provided by HiddenGems and Aria Lovely. All opinions are mine and freely given.

Blog | Instagram | Twitter | Facebook

03-31: Since this is the dullest title I've read all year, I'm not going to waste a lot of time on it. Not yours and not mine.

I mean, there's nothing technically wrong with this book, I don't hate it. It's just so boring I didn't want to read it. It took me 3 days to force myself through the first 20%.

Everything is instant.. she gets kidnapped.. but she's hot for him. That can work.. if there's a connection.. but there's nothing. There's no depth to any of the characters, their backstories, or the main plot. It's like someone sat down and wrong a long synopsis.

If you don't care about any of those things, then maybe this book is for you. It wasn't for me.

Honestly, the best thing about this book is the cover. So, just enjoy that.. and avoid the text inside. It's really for the best.

This really sucked me in! Cass is a dark, broody, bad boy who falls for sweet, innocent Summer and their chemistry was great. I wish they had spent more time together, but I like the back and forth points of view and seeing Summer find the truth about herself. There were a couple good romance scenes and I'm hoping for more in the next book. That ending about killed me, I need the next book now!!

Hi Guys! I am really really excited to announce a new addition to the nook this week- Bound to the Dark Prince (The Fae Wars Book One) by Aria Lovely. WHAT A GEM THIS DEBUT IS!

We need to talk about this cover art, YUM. The cover snagged my attention right away. I have seen SO many covers, sometimes they blur together to be honest but this one was professional-grade and very characteristic of our main male lead.

This book alternates point of views between our two main leads- Cassiel and Summer. They have believable chemistry from the start and their developing relationship is easy to follow. Just when I thought I was sure how the plot was going to go down predictable lane, Aria takes a harsh left and leaves the reader guessing who is good and who is evil!

There’s so many themes at play in this novel, especially the teetering scales between what is truly light vs. darkness. The author really invested in rounding out her characters, their wants, their “tells”, and what that says about them between the lines.

This isn’t a flat one-dimensional book by any means, I was so impressed by the interconnections and duality between the characters and the side of the war they represent. This bring me to why Cassiel is such a strong lead. I mean you know he’s physically strong from the cover *fanning myself* but through his POV we get to see his conflict between who he is supposed to be and the person he really is.

Summer is his equal in every way, not in that “we are fated mates” schtick but in how she grows into her own power throughout the plot. You won’t find a swooning gal who just blindly accepts what she is told, you see her really challenge Cassiel, what the unseelie fae represent, and the seelie fae as well (no spoilers).

The world they are set in is the perfect storm that sets us up for future books. A delicate balance is struck between what events have happened to bring us to the plot of the story and also what is still untold for where the war will go next. The let-down was sharp, leaving me still ruminating about what the future holds for Cassiel and Summer and the fae wars. I am still coming to grips with waiting for book two.

description

Aria Lovely is an up and coming author to watch for! Her debut novel, Bound to the Dark Prince, reads like a tried and true novelist in her element. I can’t wait to see what she does next with book two! Spoiler Alert: I am already hooked onto her mailing list and stalking her Amazon page for the latest on when my next fix of Cassiel and Summer is coming – I suggest you do the same! To sum it up, here’s the skinny…

Artistic Appeal – 10/10, this cover captured my eye on the kindle store and is a great teaser for all the delicious events in the book. Whoever made that gorgeous cover, lock them DOWN!!

Character Development – So much to say here not just about Cassiel and Summer but about secondary character development as well. Most of the time, secondary characters get the shaft in a debut, turning out slightly flat or psychotic without understanding what their motives are. But not in this debut, these characters are all interconnected in unique ways to the main leads and also to the unseelie or seelie court, creating beautiful layers that test their loyalties and expected behavior. There is so much promise and opportunity for book two with Cassiel and Summer while hinting at the role Jasper, Winter, and many other supporting characters.

The Ride – If this book were a ride it would Verbolten, Verbolten, Verbolten all the way baby! Just when you think you know what this book is all about, they pull the rug out and launch you at breakneck speed in a whole new direction. This debut drops you into a whole new world, a curve ball on the unseelie and seelie fae dynamic while weaving in a tempting forbidden romance you can’t help but get hooked on! I know I couldn’t!

Drop me a line if you want to chat about Cassiel's straight up delicious body! Help a gal out and promote new indie authors like Aria Lovely, she deserves all the love! If you all have new indie authors you are obsessed with, please also send them my way! But in the meantime...Happy Reading!

Bound to the Dark Prince follows Summer, a young woman studying biology struggling to get by in NYC. On her sisters birthday, she is approached by an intriguing male in the bar who turns out to be not who he seems. Summer taken from the mortal realm, finds that she is not only human, and the lines defining light and dark are deeply blurred. Fighting to get back home, she finds herself realizing she wants to bring peace, and not be a pawn of war on either side.

This was a super fun read! I read it in a day, and enjoyed every part! I can’t say it was perfect, the book jumps into the plot very quickly, but skips over a bunch of world building which would have been beneficial. I would have loved if this book was about 100 pages longer, allowing for a stronger character development, and world building. Overall, it was a great read and I would recommend this to fans of the From Blood and Ash series!

I'll read book 2...

I was so hoping this was a stand alone. Not sure how I missed it but cliffhanger warning. Definitely more books ahead. I like the storyline. The plot has some interesting features involving the fae. Prince Cass and princess summer seemed a little weak though. Summer is weak because she's clueless to the fae realm and it was annoying that she doesn't get a true explanation up front. She's told "you're a princess" but given no back story. Odd considering her status. Even after she's been living in the summer court and knowing it's danger she makes stupid choices. I know it's plot building but couldn't she at least have some common sense? Prince Cass is well written in the beginning but as the story continues he seems to lose power in his character not his magic. Jasper gets away with things he shouldn't be able to if Cass was truly a dark prince. I'd prefer that he was tougher. Lastly, there are times the writing depicts a strong level of angst, darkness and revulsion. Especially in the unseelie court. As much as I didn't like that dark element it did elevate the whole writing and my readers expectation. Then we are back to our two main characters and we descend from where the writing was taking us. It just felt like two people penned this. That's why it has a 3. The idea of the story though is a solid 4.

I love fae stories and this one was captivating. The build-up of tension throughout the book and the mystery surrounding the characters kept me glued to the pages. The writing is engaging, the storyline is absorbing and the worldbuilding is complex. I didn't expect the cliffhanger at the end but I'm really curious to know how things will turn out for Summer and Cassiel. Will they be able to bring peace to their people? How will the Summer Queen retaliate? Is war going to destroy their kingdoms? So many things left to discover, can't wait for the next book.

DNF 48% The heroine is incredibly unintelligent. She has been kidnapped to the fae realm, held captive, and then rescued. On the journey back with her rescuer she nearly dies twice because she falls for all the tricks of the fae land and is unaware of the dangers. Her rescuer is the ONLY reason why she doesn't die each of those times. But do you know what our heroine decides is a good thing to do, Dear reader? She decides she should sneak away from her rescuer before they get to where they are going to hopefully find her way back to the human world. The girl who has almost died twice in less than 12 hours WITH A GUIDE. Of course she sneaks off (her reasoning for sneaking off doesn't even make sense), gets bitten and almost eaten by a giant snake, complete with constriction and blacking out. Of course her rescuer saves her from death a THIRD time. She wakes up back at the Summer Palace about to meet the queen and guess what she's already thinking about? You guessed it the simple minded heroine who almost died, not 1, not 2, but THREE times WITH A GUIDE is already planning her next escape. She is truly UNINTELLIGENT, lacks COMMON SENSE, and quite frankly shouldn't be alive and for damn sure shouldn't be ruling over anybody. She lacks even the most BASIC survival instincts, yet this is a princess who should get to rule over others someday. I just...............

This novel was well written and edited, with few typos that I caught in the ARC version of the manuscript. The world building of Fearie was excellent, with both the overwhelming beauty and deadliness of Fearie really coming alive in this novel. The characterization of the hero, heroine, and some of the minor characters was also top-notch in this novel. Where this novel really fails is in the development of the romantic relationship between the hero and heroine of this novel. The heroine and hero were only on page together at the beginning of this novel and the end, which really detracted from my enjoyment of this novel. In order to have a satisfying romance novel, most of the time the hero and heroine need to be together and interacting with each other for the majority of the novel. The heroine acknowledges to herself that she is in love with the hero near the very end of the novel, but I the reader never really got to see them fall in love naturally and organically. That made me not really buy the fact that the heroine loved the hero. The plot and pacing were quite good and exciting, though I was impatient that the hero and heroine were separate for most of this novel, which negatively impacted my enjoyment of the plot and pacing. The angst in this novel was fairly low, and the stakes were very high, which tends to be one of my preferred narrative structures for romance novels. I did not notice any common romance novel tropes in this novel. The world building and characterization of this novel rated five stars, the plot and pacing rated three stars, and the development of the romantic relationship and cliffhanger ending rated one star, for a combined score of three stars. This novel ends on a cliffhanger, which is a big con for this series. I recommend this novel to readers who are looking for a fantasy novel with romantic elements, because if you are expecting a fantasy romance novel, you will be disappointed. I will not be buying myself a keeper copy of this novel.

Seems to be a great start to a new series

This book grabbed my attention from the first chapter and still doesn’t want to let go. Hopefully, this is a romance and not urban fantasy. Some reviews have stated that the 2 main characters spend the majority of the book apart. That is correct and, in my opinion, necessary because Summer wouldn’t have been able to access her power otherwise. And then there would be no plot, lol. We meet some pretty interesting characters that I hope we learn more about in the next book!

Grammar/Editing - Noticed a few boo-boos...”feel asleep” instead of “fell asleep” and “would chose” instead of “would have chosen.” These did not halt the story’s flow at all.

Plot - I’ve read a few fantasy storylines before, and it amazes me that the authors are able to make the story unique. Just like most songs only have 4 chords and rely on rhythm and lyrics to change things up, Bound to the Dark Prince is similar to others in its genre but definitely stands on its own.

Length - Ended at location 3388 on my Kindle.

Romance - The possibility of romance between the 2 main characters (and even one of the main characters and a side character) was introduced. Mainly just a bit of kissing.

Violence - Quite a bit of violence. Both sides of the Fae realm are a bit blood-thirsty. Summer and Cass find themselves in a bit of a pickle at some spots in this story.

Cheating - Alluded to, but not between the main characters.

Cliffhanger - YES! 😂

Final rating - 4 stars. I will definitely read the next in this series, but I hope it has more romance.

The Fae are divided, the Unseelie and the Seelie. The Prince of the Unseelie, Cassiel is trying to find a way to end the war between the separate groups so he goes in search of the missing Seelie princess. Summer is just a normal mortal girl, until she stumbles upon Cassiel one night and it changes everything. Waking up far from home in another realm, Summer does the only thing she can do, try to escape. Along the way the story takes you on an adventure from the lands of the Winter King, who wants to wipe out the Seelie, to the Summer Queen, who wants to rid the world of the Unseelie. And with Summer trying to fit in with her new mother, while learning to control her newfound magic, everything is not as it seems.
The book ends on a cliffhanger, so will need to wait for book two to see what happens next.

It was good.

So this is the first book by this author and i thought that it was good. The reason I gave it 3 stars instead if 5 was 2 reasons. 1- I wish that Summer had more of a back bone and stood up for herself more. You start to see that at the end of the book and hopefully it will continue on as the series progress. 2- I wish Cassiel and Summer had more romance and intimacy between them. I'm not talking about sex I'm saying I wish they had more time together to learn about each other and about how they feel towards one another. But other than that I think I definitely will continue on with this series because it seems like it will be great as the series progresses.

Wow!! bravo to this author , you did a fantastic job bringing this world to life. I loved the storyline and the characters as well.

I’m not sure how I stumbled onto this book but boy am I glad I did. I cannot wait for the next book (fingers crossed it’s not long)

On a side note, I did read some of the other peoples reviews and wanted to add my 2 cents. For the ppl who winged saying they wished the MC had more backbone bla bla. This is your story and your characters so write them how you like, the readers (us) are just along for the ride ;) look forward to reading any future books :)

Can the Dark and the Light come together?

I love it when a book sucks you in and everything else around you fades. This book was a page turner for me. It has fantasy, betrayal, love, romance, and passion. I truly enjoyed this book. He's the Prince of Dark, she's the Princess of Light. Sworn enemies forbidden to love one another. Can an ancient love truly get in the way of this developing love? It is book one but the ending doesn't leave you disappointed like other cliffhangers. Dear Ms. Lovely, can you please finish book two, pretty please.

bummed

I read this book after reading so many fae/fantasy romance novels that I DNF most of them because they were poorly written.. or boring. This one was soo good .. I saw the year it was written and thought it’d be a complete series. And it wasn’t…
What happens to Summer and Cassiel?
Ugh. 😑 I know some writers pop out nonsense and we’re (the readers) sitting there wondering “what trash did I just read?” quality over quantity. I’m here for it if she ever finishes the series!! Bring it on. Take Finverra down. Stop the Unseelie/seelie war. Tell us that Winter is the changeling baby traded out with Alvina…
Why were the old gods interested??
Finish please!!

At first I thought that this was going to be just another cookie cutter erotic faerie novel. But right when I was about to give up on the book it became more. You have action, betrayal, and very little sex. It was actually quite refreshing.

When an Unseelie prince kidnaps a seelie princess in order to stop a war mayhem appear as she is then in turn re-kidnapped by her own people. It is what happens after this that makes the book worth reading.

So I found this by accident when looking at reviews for a different book and can I just say I was ecstatically surprised!!!! I say 5 stars. From someone who practically worships Sarah j Maas and holly black I now have someone new to follow like a feened fan! This had a relatable girl lead who slowly becomes the BA female we all love to read about, and the dark handsome prince cass steals your heart from the get go. There was strategy and planning and a ending you loved because you know the story is about to get even better with the next book which I’ll be diving into now!!

Give it a go!

Not bad! It was intertainering to read. Only 4 stars because I was hoping for more display of power among the Fae. I love reading battles scenes! The beginning of the book when she was naked most of the time.. ehh.. don't think she needed to be exposed so much.. let the Prince wonder whats beneath her clothes.. seems like he cheated that he got to see her lady bits so soon. But good read. Hoping there's a 2nd book!

Lacking

This was an intriguing story, but in the end, it came up lacking. The feelings between the Prince and our h were instant then gone, then instant again, leaving me with my head spinning and unimpressed. We definitely would benefit from a little more backstory, both for our H and h and more development of the real feelings between them, instead of one day the character declaring she can't deny said feelings anymore.

This book was very enjoyable. It was a little bit slow at first but once you a couple chapters in, you wont be able to put it down!

The characters and storyline were both very well written and the character development along the way was so amazing!

A great cliffhanger leaves you wanting more. I cannot wait for more from this fantasy world.

Interesting

It was an interesting take on a story told a couple of times already. Dark prince loves summer girl and they are enemies. The action scenes kept you engaged but sometimes not enough happening. It definitely has potential. Missing was an intense world and character building. So all in all a short read that’s interesting

2.5 Stars.

I didn't hate this book. 2.5 stars sounds so low, but since that's the cross between "it was okay" and "I liked it", that is what I'm giving it.

The book was entertaining, and I read it till the end, but I won't be picking up the second book. I just don't care enough about the characters, especially the FMC.

More than a page Turner.

Yes I'm an AVID reader usually one or two full length books a day. There have been literally 3 books that I've made myself stretch out the read time. Now it's 4. Just like most people hate the end of TWD or GOT seasons I didn't want to come to the last page. When's the next one?

Wow, just wow

Really liked where the story is going. This book is not typical in anyway, and the situation the H and h find themselves in is almost impossible to find their happy ending. Can’t wait to read book 2 to find out how either of them deal with extreme odds and if they can find peace for their people’s. Lots of unpredictables in this story and I really like it!
