*If you like powerful Dukes, loving Duchesses and a marvelous depiction of the majestic Regency and Victorian era, then The Haunted Knight of Lady Canterley is the novel for you.
This is Patricia Haverton's debut novel, a historical Regency romance novel of 80,000 words (around 400 pages). No cheating, no cliffhangers, and a sweet happily ever after.
Born the oldest of three children, Patricia Haverton grew up believing that she'd follow in her father's footsteps and pursue a career in science. However, her worldview changed when she decided to explore her British mother's roots. The trip to her ancestral lands solidified her conviction that she had found her true calling in the romanticism of the Era of Kings and Queens.
A hopeless romantic and a firm believer in the idea of soulmates, Patricia changed the course of her life and decided to get her degree in Creative Writing and Psychology. As she jokingly says ever so often, "she lives in the past now, where love shows the way and Dukes save the day!"
When she's not weaving tales of love that prevails, Patricia enjoys spending time with her husband, roaming the British countryside, where they have been living in for the past decade.
Now would be the time to let yourself go and experience the true magic of the Regency Era! Let your imagination run wild, live amazing adventures through the eyes of brave heroes! Like the legendary wise wizard, Patricia will be your guide!

ARC Received from Bookfunnel 🌀 I also got this ebook for $.99 on Amazon.
Amelia💃💋 is a stupid woman, as a character, because she runs off after the kidnappers alone at every chance she gets, which is several times in this novel. I saw nothing noble in her behavior. She puts herself in grave danger, several times throughout the book, and causes havoc between her older brother, Jonathan, Tristan🐺🍆⛲🔫🔪, and Henry, the Duke that Grace👰 is supposed to marry.
The author invents dangerous scenarios for Amelia💃💋 to become embroiled in, to prolong this story. It makes the book too long and it starts to become ridiculous. Quantity is not Quality!
I felt sorry for Tristan🐺🍆⛲🔫🔪, because his lady love 💘 is such an idiot!
I received an advance copy of this book in return for an honest review.
And honestly, I found it a bit iffy. This is a really frantic book with a bull-headed heroine charging around in pursuit of her abducted little sister. She puts herself in danger again and again, accomplishing well...nothing. Honestly she could have gotten more done by poking around at home but she needs to chase around so she can bump heads with the hero generating antagonism that will of course evolve into...you know.
Two specific quibbles. The title has no obvious relevance to the subject matter.
And I was annoyed at a bit near the start where the fiance who has just learned that his love is being held for ransom is described simply as "He was beside himself," a far less than vivid descriptor. Sure he's an unimportant character but he deserved a little more than that.
This story is emotionally draining as we experience the madness of grief, pain and anger as it overtakes Amelia. Her sister is kidnapped and held for ransom. The ransom is so steep, both Grace's fiance and her father must come up with the money. This story is heartbreaking, and there is no real happily ever after with the knowledge that this family must carry forward. It seems the only one who can keep Amelia grounded is her brother's best friend, Tristan. Tristan is faultless in his love for Amelia, but Amelia is blinded by a promise made to her mother, that she cannot see what is plainly in front of her. Amelia goes on an adventure of finding her sister that takes her and Tristan to the northern shores of Scotland. Where Tristan does his best to keep Amelia from harm and madness. It's where Tristan recognizes what Amelia really needs: freedom.
Be prepared to not being able to put down this book once you start it! It is packed full of adventures, while the characters confront some very dangerous situations. If you are more inclined to read about the balls and the ambiance of the era, this may not be your book. If you enjoy a beautiful romance packed full of action, this book is for you. The main characters will steal your heart, but so will the side characters, Fergus, Malcolm, Miss O'Brien, Jacob. This is truly a team effort, lead by a strong female lead, and a male lead completely in love with her. If you enjoy this book, you just need to read The lost Countess that counted Stars by the same author
A roller coaster ride of a story. Filled with wonderful, well written characters, whom you feel you come to know. And also filled with love, unreturned loved, villains, chases, adventure, hope, finally peace. A great story. I couldn't put it down.
This is an action packed story that takes twists and turns that are unexpected. The beautiful depth of love of a dying mother to her surviving children, and the fierce protective love of siblings for each other. And to add to this emotional story the romantic unrequited love of a man for a woman.
This was an exciting tale with several layers that added mystery and intrigue. Tristan and Amelia don’t have time to explore their feelings for one another with all the other outrageous events taking place around them. The biggest culprit is the one you least suspect of all the treachery! A rollercoaster ride full of all sorts of emotions!
Great book very well written. Patricia is a wonderful writer. Loved the story line and couldn't put the book down until I finished the story. A lot of twists and turns and romance. I'm planning on reading more of her books.
From the moment I began reading I knew I would not be able to put the book down. I read straight through the night and do not regret it. This book put me through the wringer of emotions. Never have I felt as emotionally jostled by a book. This started with tears, then excitement and happiness, then appalling shock and worry. I cannot say the focus of the book is romance but romance does figure into it. Two romances, one for Grace, the younger Dowding daughter and Amelia her older sister. Fast forward nineteen years after Grace's birth and we find Grace preparing to wed. Amelia was still unwed to her father's disgust. But Amelia did not care. I can see that Amelia is the heroine of this story and boy did she have a tough life. She raised her sister to be the perfect young lady and yet maintained her own fierce independence that infuriated their father. They never go along. Jonathan the eldest was always the peacemaker trying to keep Amelia away from their father's wrath. Moving forward, Grace gets kidnapped and put up for ransom asking for an obscene amount of money. Half to be paid by Grace’s fiancé, Henry Booth, Duke of Slatonshire and the other half by her father William Dowding, Viscount of Canterley. Amelia, Henry and Jonathan realize they have a spy in their mist because the villains seem to know what they are doing and when they are doing it. The story took me on a journey from England and all across Scotland. Tristan Knight, Earl of Aylesbury has loved Amelia since he first met her as a child. He knew then that she was his soulmate. As they grew Amelia never treated him above the polite regard of a friend of the family. Now that Grace has been kidnapped the story revolves around Amelia's desperate attempts at rescuing Grace. As irritated as the men were with her actions, they could not fault her. Between Amelia, Jonathan, Henry, Tristan, Fergus Amelia's stable master, Malcolm a Scot who rescued Amelia when she was found unconscious in Scotland and Jacob a Jewish man that Tristan knew from the underbelly of London who did excellent undercover work. They all worked together to rescue Grace, solve the mystery of the kidnapping and hold those accountable for their dirty deeds. The adventure begins. These characters are unforgettable and leave a lasting impression. Those they meet on the road and join the Dowdings are unexpected for their inherent goodness, kindness, compassion and natural skills and fit right in with the group. There are plenty of twists and turns in the story to keep you glued to each page holding you in suspense as to what is to occur next. There is a poisoning, illness, shooting injuries, betrayal of the worst kind and the budding of a complicated, exasperating, frustrating, bull-stubborn romance between Amelia and Tristan. The ending is a shocker and I never saw coming. The extended epilogue was icing on the cake and I was glad the author added it. This is a must read. You will not be disappointed and I highly recommend this. If I could give it more than five stars I would. The writing is suburb, I did not get waylaid by any spelling errors or editing problems. A clean read through and through. Don't pass this up. This being author Patricia Haverton's debut novel I deem it an award-winning success and I eagerly look forward to her next book.
The Haunted Knight of Lady Canterley by Patricia Haverton It’s dangerous, it’s terrifying, it could all fall apart. But what if it all falls together? When their trail leads them to the wilderness of Scotland, an unexpected ally points them in the right direction: the key to Grace's abduction hides in the vaults of Canterley Manor. This is Lady Amelia Dowding and Tristan Knight's story. This is Grace's story. “Yes, I can believe it,” Amelia answered with a sad smile. She bent down and kissed the top of her sister’s head to hide her true feelings. A tear slipped down her cheek and she turned away under the guise of grabbing another handful of hairpins. “You will make a lovely bride.” “Let us hope that Henry thinks so as well,” Grace replied, studying her reflection in the mirror critically. Amelia stood behind her sister, brushing Grace’s hair. “Can you imagine it, Amelia? Soon I will be the Duchess of Slantonshire! Me, a Duchess!” Her smile beamed so brightly it was stunning to behold. Duchess!” Her smile beamed so brightly it was stunning to behold. Grace looked so much like their mother that it hurt. The Haunted Knight of Lady Canterley by Patricia Haverton is a 4 star book. I am looking forward to reading more books by Patricia Haverton. "I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book."
First of all, I couldn't continue to read this story. I was 1/3 of the way through the book and the 'heroine' (and I use the term loosely) recklessly endangered her life and was antagonizing the hero so badly, if I was him, I would have told her to sod off. Amelia , who the is the story's main character is so upset at being told what to do, she shows her ass every time she could. She is just trying to get killed. But there is another main character I think, named Grace. You really couldn't tell who was the main character and even though Amelia is 27 and raised Grace who is 19, they are both idiots. The author depicted the men as intelligent human beings, but the females were pictured as being a pair of bimbos. I just couldn't read any more. It was too infuriating that Amelia lacked common sense and self preservation. She should be listening to the men in her life who seemed very practical and even headed. In the first third of this book, Amelia ran off 4 times, was almost raped, was poisoned and at the time I stopped reading had tied herself to the saddle, but passed out and awoke in the forest so she didnt know where she was. And the sad thing is, the rest of the story was awesome. It had a good plot, was well written, no grammar or spelling errors and if Amelia wasn't such a stupid head, would have been a 5 star read....
A promise to her dying mother on her lips, Amelia Dowding takes her infant sister, Grace, in her arms as her mother slips away. Her final words to her and her brother, “You must take care of each other now. You only have each other.” (My paraphrase)
Traveling to her betrothed years later, Grace is kidnapped and a ransom demanded. Amelia, her brother Jonathan, along with their father and Grace’s fiancé scramble to procure the money. Amelia, however, takes matters into her own hands and leaves on her own to look for her sister. One frustrating turn after another, Amelia is continually getting into dangerous situations. She refuses to listen to reason. Her foolhardy actions drove me crazy.
It’s a chase to the finish to find Grace while she’s still alive, and also find the identity of the kidnapping plan.
The best one-word summary for The Haunted Knight of Lady Canterley is WOW! I cannot recall having read a debut novel of this caliber before. I will forego the temptation to comment on the story itself so as not to spoil the delightful experience of discovering the many unexpected revelations as the story unfolds. Although some may disagree, I found the heroine, Lady Amelia Dowding, a lovely yet powerful leading lady who would be a role model for an independent, strong woman of our day. She made a deathbed vow to her mother that she would look after her younger sister. The whole story revolves around the steps she takes in keeping that vow. The cast of characters is composed of strong, capable, and devoted cast members, each of whom contributes significantly to this masterpiece of storytelling.

Although it took me a few days to finish this one as I am on a few review teams, I got a free copy of this one for an honest review. The Haunted Knight of Lady Canterly was an excellent debut novel and a definite page tuner. It had many twists and turns and I figured I knew who was behind Grace's kidnapping but not for the reason. I was looking for something more sinister, which shows how my mind works. LOL. I loved both stories of Henry and Grace and Amelia and Tristan, but much more went into Amelia and Tristan's story for obvious reasons. It was a beautiful story of a woman who highly underrated herself based on her father's opinion of her. Listen up ladies, never let a man's opinion define you.
Wow! What a great book! I absolutely loved it and couldn't put it down. It's really action packed and full of adventure and romance. It had me on the edge of my seat from the very beginning till the end of the story waiting to find out how things would turn out for Tristan and Lady Amelia. There's lots of twists and turns and suspense, never a dull moment. The characters are wonderful, very well developed and engaging. I love the epilogue and extended epilogue, I especially love that the epilogues are at the end of the story and you can read them right away, instead of having to go online and enter your email address again to be directed to the page with the epilogues. This book was a pleasurable and exciting read, and I would definitely recommend it!
Amelia's mother is dying in childbirth and asks Amelia to raise her sister and take care of her. Now nineteen years later Grace is getting married to a Duke. She leaves to go to his estate to finish the wedding plans. Amelia has to stay behind and wait for the wedding dress to be brought from London. On the way Grace is kidnapped. This story is filled with intensity, action, drama, betrayal, adventure, romance. An excellent debut novel. It will pull you in at the start and not let go until the end. Characters are fleshed out, well thought out plot and well written. Patricia is very talented.
“The Haunted Knight of Lady Canterley” by Patricia Haverton This was/is a good story. An intriguing story with lots of twists and turns and long. At least, it seemed long to me. I persevered and read through to the very end of the story and for the most part enjoyed the story. I am torn between a 4 and a 5 star rating… I liked the story (5-stars) but the middle was long enough that I prayed to get through the middle (3-stars) to revel in the concluding chapters. Thus the 4-star rating. I was gifted an ARC of the story by the author for an honest review. I never did quite figure out how the title fit the story. Happy Reading ! !
If this is an indication of things to come sign me up. I love how Tristan stayed true to his self even when things go tough. Now Amelia turned out to be a different story for me. For someone who showed great strength in character in the beginning made a move in chapter seven that although fueled by the helplessness was very selfish and immature. It took a long time before I became sympathetic towards her again. This is definitely a read again book for me and who knows next read I be a little bit more charitable towards Amelia. Can’t wait to see what Patricia has lined up next.
This is a well written book with an intriguing story line. The author does a great job building the story and pulls you in with all the drama, action and romance. Her detailed scenes help to bring the story to life, taking you back in time and making you feel you're there. The characters are strong and well developed and the story flows fluidly. It's a true page turner right to the end. I loved and highly recommend reading.
I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book. All opinions in this review are my own and freely given.
Love this book. Fantastic story line. Characters are complex and engaging. Real page turner. Very hard to put down. Captivating story from the first page. Very well written. Fast-paced. Lots of suspense, mysteries, thrilling adventures, suspicions, kidnapping, intrigue, loyalties, and romance. Never suspected the villain until it was revealed. Totally awesome story. Highly recommend this book and author.
The plot of this book was well thought out with a surprising twist at the end. Lots of angst and intrigue. I must say that the poor horses 🐎 must be absolutely exhausted traveling from one end of England to the northern most point of Scotland and back over and over. 😂🤣
This was the best historical regency book I've read! With an excellent plot & great characters, this story kept me spellbound! There are so many puzzle pieces to the story! Surprising twists & turns kept my rapt attention all the way through!
Recommend this book to all who enjoy HEA. This is the first novel I have read by Ms Haverton but certainly won't be the last. The action, danger, mystery and twists keep one turning the pages, and the two "couples " remain in your memory after the last page. Well written and thoroughly enjoyed.
Great story I could not put it down. A bit of everything. Adventure mystery romance. Some scary stuff as well. I loved this book and would recommend it to everyone. There is no lurid scenes and no foul language!. While the lady is too independent for her own good she will win you over quickly.
This was a very readable book. I finished in one day. I do have a problem with a woman who is so headstrong that she puts her and others lives at risk and justifies it to herself.
Oh lord!! What a storyline! This book had everything, from betrayal to never ending love. Everyone will fall in love with the characters and storyline!
