High-profile escort, journalist, author, mum and sex-industry pioneer. A woman who prides herself on staying true and being empowered - even mentoring other women - yet who, when it comes to her own life, had become a dishevelled bloody mess.
We left Samantha X confused at the end of Hooked - should she stay escorting or hang up her high heels? In this fascinating, compelling sequel we see Samantha grow in to her new role as boss of her escort agency Samantha X Angels, how she deals with the girls, falling in love with Mr Big (while still managing to sneak in a few clients) ... and much, much more!
Back on Top is fast-paced and occasionally outrageous, told with the flair readers loved in Hooked. Samantha X does not hold back when it comes men, love, sex - and getting herself back on top.
I’m counting this as I read over halfway- but DNF Half of this is about a relationship she had so it’s like a romance and to be honest egh this is why I don’t read romance I just don’t care so I quit
I loved Samantha's new book, so I was really excited about this one. I yet again loved her stories about being an escort, and found her interesting, witty, and funny.
But I just could NOT understand Samantha's on-and-off thing with the clearly narcissistic, controlling, and emotionally abusive Mr Big. She speent about half the book explaining over and over and over why she kept going back to him, but I just couldn't get it. He literally gives her nothing that she actually wants in a relationship, apart from some nice weekend in Como (come on, seriously? This woman gets paid mega-bucks to have romantic weekends with all kinds of men. Some weekend in Como cannot be the highlight of her life?)
I kept holding on, swinging between elation everytime she kicked Mr Big to the curb, only to feel frustration and despair when she yet again when crawling back to him. (Yes, I saw crawling. Again, this woman is beautiful, intelligent, witty, and funny. Mr Big treats her terribly)
I kept hanging on for the ending of the book thinking surely the win at the end of this book will be that he's gone for good.
But no. He's back in her kitchen, and back in her life.
I found her attitude in her first book so fresh and inspiring- what a role model for young women. But this book deflated that completely for me, and I can no longer see in her a role model.
But the book was well written and the tales of her escort life interesting.
I wish I had stopped with the first one. As much as I appreciate how honest and open she is. I found myself less empowered by this book and more frustrated.
The second instalment into Samantha X's journey into escorting. It reads much easier and less preachy than her first book and we finally start to see a more human person where she's not always perfect with her clients, does actually care that her boyfriend is dismissive of her chosen job, that she will put up with bad treatment that she professed not to take and that not everything is glorious in her world. Her first book gave a view of her being a super independent strong woman who knew what she wanted and was ready for life on her terms. She earns crazy money but doesn't seem to have the ability to not work or rely on Big for money. Samantha starts to learn that other women in the industry can be her friends and allies as opposed to the first book where she seemed determined to be out for herself only. I feel this is a much more accurate representation of her life than the first book.
