An authentic approach to Cretan food and culture with contemporary flavor combinations. This book is all about eating natural, fresh food and taking the time to enjoy it. Marianna Leivaditaki was brought up in Chania on the Greek island of Crete. Her father is a fisherman and she spent most of her childhood evenings in her family's seafood restaurant, standing on a chair peeling sacks of potatoes and gutting and de-scaling the day's catch. By day she would carry her blue notebook, writing down the recipes she would like to prepare for her family and the kitchen wisdom of the Greek grannies she knew.
In Crete, the water gives fish and seafood that is cooked simply, the land bears fruit and vegetables that are served as main meals and the mountains offer game and herbs that are an irresistible delicacy. Aegean will feature sunny dishes that marry the sea and the land with the region's wild foods - but will also reflect the fact that Marianna lives and works in London, and embrace ingredients and influences that come from the wider Mediterranean. Like eating at Morito - where the emphasis is on making people feel welcome - the recipes will be approachable and homely, for sharing with friends and family.
Including Seared Squid with Rocket, Sheep's Cheese & Lemon, Cretan Pie with Greens, Courgette Fritters, .and Red Wine Ice Cream with Raisins and Almonds, this is contemporary cooking that celebrates the simplicity and integrity of Cretan cooking.
Shot on location in Crete, this book is a feast for the senses.
This is one of the few books I read about Greek recipes, from Crete to be precise. It's the story of a woman going back to her roots trough the kitchen, so to say, finding her true self in the place where she didn't expect, the place the wanted to left. Well explained, not so crazy ingredients and a picture for almost every recipe, which I really appreciate.
Absolutely nothing wrong with this cookbook if you have access to good seafood (I don't) and some other specialty ingredients. I read it mostly for armchair food travel to learn more about Greek flavor combinations. A bit of culinary wanderlust, so to speak. But since I will never cook from it and didn't really learn that much new from it, I'm going with the two star "It's OK" rating. Harsh on cookbooks, that's me. :)
Nice cookbook written by a chef who grew up in her parents restaurant in Crete who now works in London.
Each recipe comes with a personal story and look yummy! But a lot have ingredients I think would be hard to find and are very ambitious for the average cook. I can't wait to try the salmon baked potato though.
I received a copy of this book from Edelweiss+ all opinions are my own.
This gorgeous cookbook will transport you to Crete. Since switching to the Mediterranean Diet a few months ago, I’ve been on the hunt for food diversity within the diet. This cookbook delivers. I will definitely be purchasing a hardcover copy!
“Aegean “will be my companion this season by my beloved friend and talented chef @mleivaditaki . As reading again the recipes from Mountains to the Sea , my heart and taste is traveling and landing in her kingdom . I am sitting in a chair , drinking a shot of cold raki that she just brought !
There are about a dozen recipes that don't have any meat or fish involved so I'm not rating this title. The author's writing paired with the plentiful photographs work well together to explore a microcuisine such as Cretan food.
can't believe how seren it sounds over in island of Crete ! I have always had fascinations about how the people over in Mediterranean lived and what they eat. Its nothing but embrace what's available in its freshest form and savor the moments. This book highlights that !
A lot of recipes that I cannot wait to cook. But the best part were the stories preceding every recipe. It really reminded me of our trip to Crete, and made me want to visit again. If you don't live near the water, some recipes might be hard to reproduce.
