KELLY THOMPSON has a degree in Sequential Art from The Savannah College of Art & Design. Her love of comics and superheroes have compelled her since she first discovered them as a teenager. Currently living in Portland, Oregon with her boyfriend and the two brilliant cats that run their lives, you can find Kelly all over the Internet where she is generally well liked, except where she's detested.
Kelly has published two novels - THE GIRL WHO WOULD BE KING (2012) and STORYKILLER (2014) and the graphic novel HEART IN A BOX from Dark Horse Comics (2015). She's currently writing ROGUE & GAMBIT, HAWKEYE, and PHASMA for Marvel Comics and GHOSTBUSTERS for IDW. Other major credits include: A-Force, Captain Marvel & The Carol Corps, Jem and The Holograms, Misfits, Power Rangers Pink, and the creator-owned mini-series Mega Princess.
Kelly's ambitions are eclipsed only by her desire to exist entirely in pajamas. Fortunately pajamas and writers go hand in hand (most of the time). Please buy all her stuff so that she can buy (and wear) more pajamas.
In this volume, it obviously looks like someone suggested Carol should fight the Avengers, and then got the creators to build this cliched story around that concept. The pluses are some of the battles and dialogue/quips; the minuses include the art and the motivation and characterisation of the primary villain. Even with that assessment this Captain Marvel volume is looking a lot better than... all the previous ones so far! 6 out of 12
Captain Marvel is picking off the Avengers one by one. But why? You'll have to read to find out. There are some great battles here. Ultimately, it's your typical comic book contrivance, but it was fun getting there. The last issue is a twist on the Marvel poker night issue. Ms. Marvel shows up with board games. She doesn't gamble so they all go to an Escape Room. It's fun.
Kelly Thompson’s run on Captain Marvel continues to bring solid superhero storytelling with a huge helping of fun and thrills.
The five part ‘Last Avenger’ story arc sees Carol forced to do a heel turn in an impossible situation and it was fun seeing her go up against her teammates. Her confrontation with Steve Rogers was the absolute highlight of this book for me and makes me want a Kelly Thompson penned Captain America book as she clearly gets the character completely. This might have been my favourite ever Cap moment.
The one-shot that closes the book sees Carol chilling out on poker night with her pals Hazmat, Sprectrum, Spider-Woman and Wolverine until Ms. Marvel shows up with armfuls or board games and throws them all a hilarious curve ball. It’s a lot of fun.
Very fun read indeed! I'm not the biggest fan of Captain Marvel and I have not read any of the previous volumes in this run, but I was interested in this one as it has Carol turn evil! There's something about heroes going evil that has always interested me, as I did the same thing with the New 52 Supergirl run, where she became a Red Lantern.
To start off the writing and plot are just really fun in general as I love the banter between the characters. Kelly Thompson writes Captain Marvel the best and adds layers to her character that no real previous comic I've read has. There is also tons of action as you see Carol battle the avengers one by one. This book has a plot that is ripe for an event comic with 50 tie-in books, but Thompson expertly keeps the story in the confines of just this series, which shows massive restraint on Marvel's editorial to not drag this out as a cash grab. The artwork as well is pretty nice!
Overall this is a solid Captain Marvel book and you don't really need to know much about her to read and enjoy this one!
Carol Danvers breaks bad as a familiar face gives her an ultimatum - kill the Avengers, or all Kree refugees on Earth will die!
This is a divisive storyline, as all stories that are essentially fight scenes between friends will be. It's clear from the outset that Carol has to win her battles against the Avengers here, or else the consequences will be dire, so you can cry 'jobbing' to your heart's content, but Kelly Thompson at least delivers some plausible situations that contribute to their downfall. The fights themselves aren't even the main draw - it's the emotional battle that poor Carol has to contend with as she fights her friends while trying to figure out how to save as many lives as possible.
The solution isn't perfect, but it's as comic-booky as you can get (plus it involves the return of Singularity, whom I love to pieces), so I'll let it slide. The main problem I had with this arc was the ending, because it never really resolves who and what the villain actually is. I was expecting a big reveal, but instead it's kind of all washed away. Whether Thompson plans to revisit the character or not in the future might dictate how my feelings towards this arc change.
Lee Garbett steps up to the plate for this arc; his style is a little faster and looser than series artist Carmen Carnero, but it plays well with the frenetic fight scenes for certain. Garbett's usual suspect Nolan Woodard on colours helps matters as well.
Not a bad arc, by any means, but it definitely feels like it's lacking some substance. The battles are fun to watch, but I wish the framing sequence had a bit more punch and resolution to it.
This one was so much fun to read, great artwork, amazing covers, and a real interesting plot. I liked that it wasn't dragging the story as to not reveal what's happening. Carol is suddenly hunting down Avengers to kill. You'll get the explanation as to why real soon so don't worry. A real page-turner the whole story and with progression that doesn't seem slow or whatever.
You like Captain Marvel? You'll like it for sure. You don't like Captain Marvel like myself? Then, you'll like it for sure. I was expecting to hate this volume too like the last two, which I've found a chore to read but I was surprised that I really liked it from beginning to end.
To sum up, you'll see Carol hunting down the Avengers to kill them, one by one, also, the scene with Captain America was great! Loved the action scenes, great great artwork and coloring!
This was pretty cool to see Captain Marvel wreck shit. She pretty much takes on every Avenger. The ending is pretty decent but overall super predictable.
Taking a page out of Aaron’s best “heavy metal” comics, Carol has to go toe-to-toe (and strategy alongside power) with some heavy-hitter Avengers.
Loved it. Read it in one sitting, and got misty there in the middle with Cap (always awesome when a writer gets Steve).
No idea who this Vox is, maybe I’ll catch up on Death if Inhumans (but only if I’m sure it isn’t rife with Inhuman politics *yawn*).
Can I tell you again how much I love how intimate Thompson is with her main characters? It’s approaching Mark Waid level of “getting” them, but instead of knowing every minute detail of their history, Kelly seems to get every minute detail of their soul.
I was really worried about this volume Since I love Captain Marvel. I was concerned about her being turned into a villian in this comic or if they where going to save her charater with a overly done and weak mind control story.
I was presently surprized. I liked what they did did with the story in this volume. I was unformilar with the main villian Vox supreme since I don't read inhumans comics really. Which was good since Carol did not know much about him either, so it added to the effect of the story. I do really like when marvel has heros fight other hero's villian. It gives the marvel world more depth, and allows for more combinations and interactions between charaters.
The 12# Keeps you in the dark about why Captain marvel is fighting with the other avengers. The fight with Thor with has alot of action since both thor and captain Marvel can fly so thier fight takes place over multiple contanets.
The 13# Starts with Captain Marvel and Ironman's fight. After the fight's conclusion what's really going on is explained by use of flashbacks. Singularity also apears in this issues, which I was glad to see, since she was one of my favorite parts of A-force. She also is a key part of the story.
The 14# Starts with further explanation of whats happening. As well as the plan to deal with Vox supreme. Captain Marvel also begins her next fight with another set of avengers Black panther and She-hulk.
The 15# Continues with Captain Marvel's and She-hulk's fight. Then Carol must go after the last avanger, Captain america. It is at this point the next part of the plan begins where Captain Marvel must confront Vox seperem alone. On the last page of the issues Vox's plan is also revealed.
The 16# Captain Marvel must destract Vox sepreme while, the other avenger's carry out thier part of the plan, To help even the odds Carol gets a power boost from three different avengers. A sound disrupter from tony. Steve loans carol his shield. Midway throught the fight carol even is able to use Mjölnir, dou to unforseen gene modification. Carol is able to defeat vox sepreme just before the other avengers arrive.
The 17# Is a bonus story seperate from the rest of the volume. Carol and a few of the other marvel heros are playing poker. Carol invites Ms. Marvel to the game, but she can't play. So they deside to play something else, and end up running into a powered pychopath. For a one issue story it was decent.
I was hightly temepted to include the reason why Carol complied with Vox sepreme in this review, but since it was nice twist, that I did not see coming. So I did not mention it. To suffice it was the reason Captain Marvel had to fight Vox sempreme alone and what the other avengers where doing during that time.
P.s. Thier was also a memetion of star in issue 16. I wonder if that means she will be returning again in volume 4. So far I really liked the continuity that this run of captain marvel has had.

A trama é bastante dispensável e insípida.
Y encima Kamala apareciendo?!? Llenó mi corazón 🫶🏻.
The best thing about this was the cool, new "Dark Captain Marvel" costume. Everything else...just felt like generic reasons for her to fight fellow heroes. Gratuitous. And not very convincing.
I didn't expect to like this because hero turning evil and fighting the Avengers is shit but this actually worked out well. Especially when I compare to when Moon Knight went bad and went after them oh lord that comic haunts me in how bad it was.
My favorite part is her dark Captain Marvel outfit like?? It had no right to look that good and I for one support her in everything she does. The way the story plays out felt like good enough reason to do all this and I loved seeing the Avengers. Also Singularity is baby.
Gotta say though the cover of #16 is my favorite and I want that as a poster. It makes sense to not do this because it would have taken away from Cap's moment (in Endgame) but Carol using his shield and also Thor's hammer is a beautiful sight. Imagine how mad the antis would be lol.
The last issue was so much fun too. Carol and friends are having a game night but then Ms Marvel takes them to an escape room. It turns out the escape room is run by a guy wanting to show off his powers and suddenly they are all in danger.
This volume, very entertaining and very fast paced. Big fan.
I truly love this arc by Kelly Thompson. I’m drawn to the way Carol not only shows off her might in the face of her entire team, but the way she runs a problem over in her head until she can determine a solution.
Doesn’t hurt that she’s given a whole badass design either! 🌟
If you like cameos/crossovers with witty banter, you'll like this. If you want pure character progression for Carol, skip this one. But don't skip this one, it was fun.
I'm not sure issue 17 really fit with the overall storyline but it was a fun addition. Also Wolverine is really just popping up in everything nowadays. Carol's suit in this was beautiful, I hope we see it in the mcu someday.
I feared it would that weird trend again of turning super heroine evil and was gladly surprised of how it turned out. Carol is a fearless hero who can do what must be done at all cost.
So this volume did not pick up with what happened in volume 2 but I really liked that the villain allowed Captain Marvel to show strategy and leadership, which she excels at. I also liked the lighthearted and fun final issue in the volume, it’s always nice when Marvel doesn’t feel the need to focus on fighting and suffering.
Another action-packed volume, where Carol is once more pushed to her limits. This title has been consistent, even it hasn't felt particularly...inspired, yet. I've yet to feel a real meaningful connection to Captain Marvel, but I'm craving it. Sometimes I feel like she may suffer the same narrative problems often attributed to Superman, that she is so powerful that it can be hard to put her in actual peril, or spin a story that doesn't have her simply smash and beam things at the end of the day. Don't get me wrong, Thompson is doing a relatively good job so far. Her dialogue is whimsical, and the heart in the book comes from her relationships, which is nice. I just feel like there's story potential in the character and her history that hasn't been tapped yet, and someone at some point will come along and hit a home run, and I'm still hoping it can be Kelly Thompson.
The art is still fun, with the benefit of some of the best coloring in the game. Carol is abruptly shown fighting her friends/colleagues, and over the course of a several issues jumping back and forth within the last 24 hours, we find out why. While at first it feels like a random jump from the first 2 volumes, it adds a mysterious layer to this phase in the character's life, and I am interested to see where it takes us. The last issue, while cute, was a throwaway. Still waiting for this series to shine like I feel it can, I am enjoying it thus far.
Just another day being Avengers... till Captain Marvel shows up, demands that you die, and seemingly kills Thor, taking his head to a new villain called Vox Supreme! A merger of a powerful Inhuman and the Supreme Intelligence of the Kree, this enemy has left bombs at Kree refugee camps and demands that Captain Marvel kill all of the Avengers in order to save her people. Now... not that I want to ruin the surprise, but obviously this is a ruse and Carol is using her friend Singularity (A-Force call back!) to hide each Avenger after defeating them, and instead giving Vox Supreme a cloned body of an Avenger, which she discovered in a old SHIELD project known as Gemini. Through their teamwork, and Carol absorbing the clones to be able to use their powers (think Hulk sized Captain Marvel with her own powers, Cap's shield, and Mjolnir... completely bad ass scene!) they are able to stop Vox and save the Kree refugees. Add in a one-shot of a game night where Spectrum, Hazmat, Spider Woman, Wolverine, Carol and Ms. Marvel go to an escape room, which is run by a two-bit villain... and you have another amazing Volume of this title. Kelly Thompson is doing an amazing job here. Hope it continues for a long time. Strong recommend on this self-contained Volume.
This was quite fun, like the way it opens with this epic fight, less to no words and just a smack down face-off between Thor and Cap M and then Iron man next issue is like one of the best action openings and immediately gets you invested in the story and then the big plot and twist comes as she has to do the bidding for this new enemy "Vox Supreme" and I love the way the explanation and backstory happening and her plans and what she has to do still and then Captain America and BP and She-hulk cameoing and what it results in, the epic fight in the end and the whole story of why is Carol doing it, her reasons and what she will do to save the world and her friends and defeat this enemy.
It has so many awesome elements like epic action scenes from right out of a movie, a good new villain but it could have used more fleshing-out like if we got some more back-story for them it could have made the story that much more awesome but oh well its quite fun and results in a great showing of Carol's other side of being the loyal one and saving her friends and loved ones and the way the Avengers play into this story is amazing and truly makes her stand out as a team-player showing that they are her family and what lengths she will go to protect them!
The book starts with a rather jarring opening, but starting after the beginning isn't a new narrative device. But it rather worked for this venture as it fit the whole concept of the story with Captain Marvel trying to take down her fellow Avengers for reasons unknown. The way things unfolds is pretty cool but not necessarily on the level of Batman taking down the rest of the Justice League or anything like that. Captain Marvel is ultimately a brawler as far as heroes go, so even her efforts to outthink her opponents don't go too far. The antagonist in this story was pretty interesting, although there's still a lot left unsaid in this book, so I expect to see more of Vox Supreme in the future.
Things did end rather...quickly? Or maybe the big challenge ended up not being as complicated as initially imagined given the involvement of the other Avengers. Plus the whole finale of sorts also ended a bit too conveniently for my tastes, which just stresses how overpowered Captain Marvel can be at times.
Carol is defeating the Avengers one by one - and we learn why waaaaayy too early. We all know Carol isn't actually going through with this, and killing the Avengers isn't going to be real, or at the very least, permanent (if you want to read comics where literally anything can happen, go the creator-owned route). But even so, the story would have still been compelling if we a) ever had room to doubt Carol was faking being a villain, by delaying the truth as long as possible, or b) she risked something by hunting down her closest friends.
I get specific here with some spoilers, which you can probably guess but I'll hide anyway:
Even though Thompson was limited by who she could kill off (nobody), there was still a lot of room to make this story a home run, and she had a great artist team to help accomplish that too. I'm still confident enough in Thompson's voice and direction for Captain Marvel to keep going, and I have to say, she also wrote a great Thor.
PS - Issue 17 is definitely page filler...it's cute, but the terrible art made it feel like a waste of pages.
Pretty solid arc. Good action art. I’m a sucker for a good “hero takes everyone else down” story, and this does it in a way that is both believable and understandable (eventually).
I wonder why it is we want this kind of story? Perhaps we are skeptical of the feasibility of actual heroism. We want our heroes to be as paranoid and selfish as we are, which would explain the Batman of it all. It’s probably good to note here that Captain Marvel is an American soldier in 2020. I know she has a lot of sympathy as a tough, cool, female role model, but I think we should note that it’s a blonde blue eyed soldier engaging in these conspiratorial “must plan for everything” behavior, and is stopping children from blowing up instead of causing it. Like I think subtextual this story is saying soldiers are key to protecting the migrants in detention camps? Worrying to say the least.
You know a series is running low on ideas when the hero takes a heel turn. "What if Captain Marvel fought all the Avengers?" It's a fun enough idea, and nearly every superhero comic tackles it at some point, so I suppose it's simply Captain Marvel's turn.
Why is Captain Marvel fighting the Avengers? Unimportant. There's a villain on the Moon from a long-past Marvel event you and I and everyone else has since forgotten. Why couldn't Captain Marvel just go to the Avengers for help? Also unimportant. More important: fights! Which are well illustrated and suitably big.
The Last Avenger isn't a memorable entry in Captain Marvel's canon, but it's enjoyable and fast. The extra issue, where Marvel and Co. get caught in a super-powered escape room, is light fun. Perhaps too light.
