This book collects The Immortal Hulk, Vol. 3: Hulk in Hell, which sees Hulk, due to the machinations of his primary adversaries (Shadow Base), end up in a Hulk Hell; this then followed by The Immortal Hulk, Vol. 4: Abomination in which Shadow Base send an Abomination after the Hulk, but not the Abomination you would expect!

The introduction of some of the Hulk's long standing supporting cast does nothing to water down this wonderful homage to EC comics / 70s' Hulk TV show horror series. This is top Marvel game! Al Ewing giving free reign has most definitely turned it up, and asides for some of the 'gore scenes' Bennett's art is also killing it. A mist-read for fans of horror and worldie Marvel reads!

Back at it with Ewing's horror-themed Hulk run! I thought the Hulk in Hell storyline was a bit weak, but it sets up what looks like a recurring touchstone of Hulk's immortality. The rest of the collection gets along with the goods: body horror, creepy "devil" Hulk, and literary allusion. I enjoy the examination of Banner's multiple personas (Joe Fixit!) and am excited to see where this goes next.

Aside from the shaky first three issues, this is a good second instalment. What's more, I really like catching up with this "size" of collection. It's nice to get almost a year's worth of stories instead of three-four issue trades. What's more, the wraparound art under the dust jackets that Marvel has been doing with these collections are spectacular and really make for cool collection pieces. See you in a few months big scary gamma family!

This is not the green monster I know from the television serie or the movies. This is something completely different... Al Ewing takes elements from the entire Hulk comics mythology and boils a thought-provoking epic from it. I’m not well acquainted with the Hulk’s history so I needed a bit of help from docter Google. It could be a little more accessible to new readers. Despite that, it’s a real pageturner. The comic benefits heavily from Joe Bennett’s art skills. That man continues to impress in the body horror department ! Whoaw !

Not for the faint of heart; the artwork is gnarly, gory, and (g)nightmarish. 🙃 It does an excellent job furthering part 1, and doesn't leave uninformed readers (like myself) in the dark for too long. Hulk is awesome.

Maybe not the best thing to have in your head right before bed. Or if you are under 12 years old.

This run would reward multiple readings. Great art as well.

“I know you locked me away for years. I know I scare you. What I do. What I am.

But before any of the OTHERS…I was there. PROTECTING you. I’ll ALWAYS protect you.

…’Cause I love you, you stupid kid.

SOMEBODY had to.”

////

“I’ve seen the bad guys win.

I’ve watched the good guys die.

And if there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s this:

The real monster in your life doesn’t do loud rants in loud costumes.

He doesn’t gloat or give speeches.

The real monster stays quiet.

Keeps his head down.

He’s got a reputation to think about.

He’s got a name.

Maybe you know it.”

It was only a matter of time until…JOE.

And holy crap does that reveal still hit like a goddamn hammer.

But I think besides the continued striking use of a bunch of errant and still hanging Hulk plots (the aforementioned Joe Fixit, the War Wagons, Fortean, Rick Jones, Abomination), I think this is the stretch where the real scope and range of what Ewing is doing started to come into focus.

For one thing, we finally understand that Banner and his emerging system has a goal now. And that goal is…nothing short of the end of the world. Which is…a mighty big shot to be calling in the first 20 issues of your ongoing series.

Further, the omnipresent narrator also reveals themselves. But you are really too arrested by what’s happening with the Betty of it all (probably my favorite “new” element of the series, following very close behind Jackie, Dr. McGowen, and Gamma Flight) to really give it any mind aside from “where the fuck is this going?”

And even if you aren’t into THAT, Jesus Christ on a bike, does the horror of this arc really jump to the forefront. The new Abomination design, the whole showdown with Bushwhacker, the new BETTY design (and her EATING THE BIG GUYS FUCKIN HEART ON PAGE), it’s just…I truly cannot think of another Big Two thing that looks/looked like this. I barely have anything to compare it to even years after its conclusion. Maybe Moore Swamp Thing? Certainly in the ideas department but like…woof.

Still really good stuff. I keep expecting to find some sort of ceiling on this but it’s just still paying out like a horribly compelling slot machine. I’m so excited to get further into it.

This omnibus started off weaker than the first, but quickly caught up to an interesting and strong story. Unlike the firs collection, this one felt significantly less "complete". Most stories led into other stories instead of being self contained stories of their own.

Still a great and unique take on the Hulk, but felt a lot like a "middle book" which I wasn't expecting after the fantastic episodic nature of the previous collection.

Ewing continues to re examine Hulk Mythology! First story continues from last volume with Hulk and Banner in Hell. According to Ewing in one interview, because he's last series sadly got shafted because of the low sales, he originally pitched Immortal Hulk as 15 issue run. And I kinda see it, how he could top that! Thankfully he could, and we all should be thankful for that! :D Second story is also a build up, but more for the rest of his run. Joe Bennett art is great as always, and there is only one guest penciler with Kyle Hotz (Technically 2 with Eric Nguyen, but he's only for few pages) Only problem is lack of extras, only a gallery of variant covers. Butt still, BUY THIS BOOK!

To pierwszy segment, bowiem czytałem dzieło zbiorcze, zawierające dwa tomy. The Immortal Hulk, Vol. 3: Hulk in Hell oraz Vol. 4: Abomination.

I ponownie.

The Immortal Hulk – Book 2 (#11-20): A Solid but Less Gripping Continuation
The second volume of The Immortal Hulk continues in the same vein as its predecessor, maintaining the eerie tone, psychological depth, and body-horror elements that set this series apart. Al Ewing’s writing remains strong, delving further into Hulk’s mythology and pushing Bruce Banner to his limits. However, compared to the first book, this volume didn’t hold my attention as much.

While the narrative expands in interesting ways, some parts feel less impactful, lacking the relentless tension of the initial arc. That said, Joe Bennett’s art is as stunning as ever, enhancing the grotesque yet mesmerizing aesthetic of the series.

Overall, a solid continuation, just not as gripping as the first volume.

I loved the artwork, but I found this one confusing. It seemed to jump around the timeline a lot. In one place Bruce was dating or Betty's lover and in the next she was his wife who didn't know if he was alive? There were a lot of other things like that, which could have been explained better.

I also not a big fan of the schizophrenia story line or all the hell and father issues.

The first GN seemed like the beginning on the story and this one didn't really continue as much as it seemed to jump way forward.

3.5 stars rounded up. This collection is fine. The art's good but the story is moving away from the greatness of the first collection. It's stepping away from the unique horror storyline and moving towards the nonsense plaguing both Marvel and DC today. It also gets a bit repetitious with the General hunting down Banner. I was excited when I finished vol 1 as it was fresh and original(ish), but I started to feel the dread I get when I pick up any comic written over the last 5 years or so by the end of this one.

Weak start, but picks right back up after they exit hell. It’s fun seeing all the touchstone characters from Hulk’s past. And not knowing everyone’s exact histories is not a hinderance. They fill you in with what is important.

I’ve already read Ewing’s Defenders, so it was fun to actually see Red Harpy’s origins here. (I prefer her in Defender’s art style. OPE.)

The art continues to be very body horror forward. So if you are here for that, you’ll find it in spades. I am sure it is a large part of what made this run so popular, but I am not really a big fan.

Things definitely start getting a lot wackier in this volume. I still don’t know if I love how out there this is compared to traditional Hulk stories, but I’m honestly in love with Joe Bennett’s art style, so it’s still an easy page turner. One thing I will say that I hope gets toned down is just how much of Banner’s supporting cast is also getting turned into body horror Hulk monsters. The amount of samey feeling fights this volume had started to get a little boring.

Body horror and SF hell

Another strong installment with more gruesome art and world building. This feels different from anything else being made at Marvel and feels much more like an independent publisher. I'm glad they took the risk.

The green door is a great addition to the order of marvel cosmic/magic worlds. The gross out body horror - ripping limbs, squishing heads and blood everywhere makes the deeeper metaphysical stuff hit a little harder.

Sheeshhhhhhhh mannnnnn !!!! So dark and twisted. Love how Ewing references alot of Hulk mythology to gain some familiarity with the story. Him being in hell was something of creepy. Especially the devil hulk stuff. What a ride this has been. Love it.
