A graphic novel about discovering your own power. Extraordinary things just don't happen to fourteen-year-old Sydelle Mirabil, a talented weaver who dreams about life outside of her tiny village. But that all changes when a mysterious young wizard named Wayland North appears and asks for Sydelle's help. He's got a shocking secret that could stop a war between kingdoms-if he can reach the capital with the news in time. North needs a navigator who can mend his magical cloaks, and Sydelle is perfect for the job. As Sydelle and North race against the clock to deliver their message, they must contend with unusually wild weather and a dark wizard who will do anything to stop them. But the sudden earthquakes and freak snowstorms may not be a coincidence. As Sydelle discovers more about North's past and her own strange abilities, she realizes that the fate of the kingdom may rest in her fingertips.

** Thank you to Disney-Hyperion and the author for sending me an ARC of this graphic novel. This was sent to me in exchange for an honest review.
Character - 5.5/10 I wanted to like Sydelle and North so bad...but I know nothing about them. Sydelle is your typical strong-headed sassy female and North is mysterious with a sad past. There is nothing really original about them. I also felt like they didn't change by the end of the graphic novel; and while there is hint of the second book, I still wish we got more character build. Also the bad guy...he was in the graphic novel for maybe 5-6 pages...I still don't understand why he became evil and what really is going on there.
Atmosphere- 6/10 There was definitely a lot of traveling involved in this small graphic novel and you get to see the outside world and some world build. I just felt like more could have been played up. You got to see many cities but I would have liked more time and explanation in each of them. Also, I really don't understand the magic system. There are those called "magically inclined" and then those that are "wizards" but there is no explanation into the magic system. Yes, you can't use large dialogue in graphic novels, but with a magic system it still needs to be explained some-how. Whether through art or through a little dialogue here and there. If they can do it in the large Marvel universe they can do it here.
Writing/Art Style- 7/10 The art style was gorgeous, everything was so vibrant with colour and colour played a huge role in this graphic novel. I loved the artists style and found it very whimsical. It was stunning. However, there were many times where the words didn't match up with the scene...or more the art didn't convey the words very well. As in the action and words didn't match up at times. I also felt like the flow was very choppy and parts of dialogue that should have been in were missing. It camedown to poor adaption from book to graphic novel.
Plot- 6/10 The issue with adapting a novel into a graphic novel is that you have to leave out a lot of pieces - plot, dialogue, character build, etc. I think it's a very big challenge to make sure everything is captured so there are no plot holes or confusion. Unfortunately, that is what happened with this adaptation. There were many times that I felt like things were left out when they shouldn't have been, or random parts of the plot that did not fit at all. There were moments when I really didn't know what was the climax or what was the push in the story and was very disappointed. I always struggle with novel to graphic novel adaptions for this reason. If you are going to adapt a book into a graphic novel you need to make sure that the key points to the story are there and if not you need to make sure it's conveyed in the art, which it wasn't.
Also there was this entire back story about a potential war, assassinations, goddesses, etc. and we really get no explanation in any way shape or form in this g.n. Which made this entire novel all that more confusing. I mean there were a few flash backs but none that connected to the big issue which was preventing a war.
Intrigue- 6/10 Do the fact that I felt like there were things missing, I found myself very bored with the graphic novel. Nothing held my attention for very long. Yes the art was beautiful but the story needs to be beautiful as well.
Logic - 5.5/10 This falls the same as the plot, because there was a poor transition from book to graphic novel and that pieces were missing...things just felt wrong. There was once instance in the graphic novel where the parents send Sydelle a letter....but they should have no idea where she is....she NEVER TOLD THEM. Or the beginning, there was NO LOGIC for Sydelle to leave her family and go on this adventure with a strange boy. None what so ever. There was nothing building up to her leaving and yet she just decides to leave, without telling her family. The logic is just not there. So many times I was flipping back saying "what...what is going on?" and I don't like getting that feeling.
Enjoyment- 6/10 I loved the art work and I loved what they were trying to do with the plot, other than that I was just not impressed. I think the adaptation was done poorly and that there was a lot of important plot information that was left out. I really wanted to love this graphic novel but it just fell flat for me.

I‘ve never read the original book but I really liked this graphic novel adaptation. The art was so pretty and vibrant and I enjoyed the story. It was a fun middle grade fantasy with a lot of adventure and magic.
This graphic novel is such a charming adaptation of Alex Bracken’s original work (which I also quite enjoyed)! I really loved seeing these characters and their story brought to life on the page, and it still delighted me with the twists and turns (though I certainly am still pining for a sequel…)
I really liked Syd and her relationship with Wayland. I love a good enemies to lovers. I wish there was more! But I know that the novel ended about here too so there is no more. It has great potential for a book 2!
I really loved the plot and characters and the art was very nicely done. I liked the magic system but it wasn't explained super well (but it's a fairly short graphic novel so that's to be expected). I would read more of this in a heartbeat!
"Magic is a responsibility, a burden, and a duty. You don't choose to have it."
"Indeed. Very few of us would, given the choice."
What is it with graphic novels that leave me wanting more?
This is a sweet and magical read with likeable lead characters, an engaging plot and interesting world-building. I love that Sydelle is a strong badass female protagonist and found her blossoming friendship with Wayland to be well-paced. The book's greatest asset is definitely its rich, vibrant and colourful artwork. A fun ride overall!
I loved the art-style and the colouring and I think the story is all the better for it. Unfortunately I wasn't super invested in the story and I know that if I was to read this in novel form, it would be less exciting but I'm happy this story was illustrated and that I gave it a shot. I would recommend for anyone who wants a concise fantasy story, I would have loved for this to be expanded upon.
This graphic novel adaption of Bracken’s YA novel of 2010, revolves around a young magician and a weaver. Fourteen-year-old Sydelle is a talented weaver who is enlisted by Wayland North to mend his magical cloaks. The two set off on a journey to warn the king of an assassination plot by a dark wizard. Along the way, the two teens come face to face with dark magic along with unusual and dangerous weather. Could Sydelle be causing the earthquakes and blizzards and might she have magic herself? The bright and colorful illustrations are filled with action and expression that complements the tale of an epic journey. The relationship between the two teens grows throughout their journey from resentment to friendship with perhaps a hint of romance. This is a fun action filled adventure.
A really lovely graphic novel adaptation of a book I’ve been meaning to read for YEARS. (One day.) It was fun and interesting and the magic system was quite unique too!
The premise for this was really interesting, and I’ll admit, it was the cover that drew me in. I love high fantasy magic stories, and had high hopes for this one…
And then I learned that the main character is only 14. A baby. A child. And her wizard companion is also a 15 y/o baby child. Sadly, the characters do not look their age. It’s got some real Pokémon vibes. But the idea of great adventure at age 14 that works so well for Pokémon, just doesn’t work here.
The story itself is cute, but the pacing is definitely off. I realized part way through that it’s an adaptation from a novel, so I’m sure the pacing is better in the original, but it was kinda messy here. Story beats either came at an odd pace, or just didn’t make sense. I often felt like I wasn’t working with all the information, but not in the good way that creates suspense. I can understand how it’s hard to fit everything in from a written novel into a thin little graphic novel, but I would have preferred a thicker read with more context.
The concept of a magic weaver and the idea behind Syd’s abilities (even with the plot twist that felt way too rushed at the end) is a really interesting one. I just wish the execution had been a little better. Still, I did enjoy myself though most of the story, so I suppose I’m being harsher than needed. It was an alright read, what more can I say.
This is a easy and fast read for graphic novel lovers. I think it is important to remember this is really for the younger readers. Even though I enjoyed it as an adult, it is quick and it doesn't go into a ton of details. The illustrations are fun. I am hoping for a second book to learn more. Perfect for middle grade readers.
Sydelle lives a quiet life in her small town of Cliffton, and despite the many-years drought, she finds fulfillment in her weaving and making beautiful clothing and tapestries. One day her world is twisted inside out when a wizard, Wayland North, appears needing her help to repair his magic cloaks. Without them working properly, he won’t be able to get a very important message to the capitol in time. And if he doesn’t, the war that looms over them since the assassination of their king against their anti-magic neighbor won’t be able to be stopped. But it won’t be easy – there is a dark wizard trying to stop them at all costs. And Sydelle doesn’t much like how North just roped her into this, nor the fact that he’s hiding secrets from her. I didn’t realize this was based on a novel, which I might now have to check out. I enjoyed this book, even though at parts inter-personal character relationships seemed to make sudden jumps, and I’m really not sure how Sydelle found so much time to weave in the few days they had traveling together. I like how she’s a strong teenager, and doesn’t let others run all over her. The brightness of the illustrations was also a lot of fun, with fun “aside” images – like the cat with Owain, it definitely brought a smile to me. I do think the plot ran a little fast, probably due to the format, and I would think (hope) some aspects get a little more fleshed out in the novel. The piecemeal fashion by which we learned about the kingdom’s troubles was spotty at best, and because it was so spotty, I didn’t quite feel the urgency North imposed on Sydelle for his mission. Then there was the element about Sydelle, which felt rather suddenly introduced towards the end and had its own explanation/“rules” subsequently hand-waved to better serve the plot by the end. As for what she wove, I’d definitely argue that the colors were nowhere near equal in the finished product, so there’s another hand-wave for Plot. Of course, for any graphic novel adaptation, a few words simply must be spared for the visual element of the story! I enjoyed the color palettes and scenery, as they made for smooth and enjoyable reading. The occasional visual jokes/gags were fun as well. I do think Sydelle and North looked a bit older than their ages (14 and 15, respectfully), though at least for North, there’s an understandable reason for it. Or maybe I’m just out of touch with what 14/15 year olds in a medieval, magical fantasy world would actually look like, and how much responsibility they would have. After all, most people were probably married by 18 at the latest, anyways, and taking on adult responsibilities far before then. Or it could just come down to making them look the part of active agents with very real responsibilities on their shoulders. 3.5 stars rounded up.
I don’t remember the last time I enjoyed a graphic novel like this. This story is about a talented weaving teenager who goes on an adventure to stop war with a mysterious wizard boy. They both travel across kingdoms and secrets and their relationship blossoms into something beautiful, all the while they explore their own identities too!!
The book overall was soooo good!! The art, the plot, the setting, the colours, the dialogue and most importantly THE CHARACTERS!! Sydelle Mirabil and Wayland North are so adorable and perfect together. I loved going on this little adventure with them, and the comic was unputdownable!!
Also that end omg!! They’re in the North somewhere, practicing their powers and finding cures and loving each other. I figure a novel after they grew up, like 18 and 19 will be fantasy and smutty about their lives in the North in hidden libraries and small towns and them coming back and being a cool powerful wizardy couple. Lol I’m obsessed.
Anyway, 100% recommend.
Also I made an edit and listened to a nostalgic fantasy playlist while reading this, which made the experience 10x times better.
I'm so glad I picked this up, because I really, really loved it. Not going to lie I picked it up completely because of the cover and I'm so glad it was just as good inside. One of my favorite things about it was the gorgeous artwork. It was so beautiful and immersive. The illustrator did a fantastic job with showing the character's emotions on their faces.
The story, although obviously heavily condensed was also so fun. It give me major Howl's Moving Castle vibes and I know I'll be rereading it a lot. It just has such a comforting feeling to it.
I am really excited to pick up the actual book, hopefully I can find a copy, because it is out of print.
