Murder in Waiting is the 11th book in the Tourist Trap Mysteries written by the wonderful Lynn Cahoon. I've read three or four of the author's other series, but earlier this year I took on this one, which meant starting from the beginning in a 14-book collection. I can't believe I'm closing in on the final ones... at least the author continues to write more. In this latest caper, Jill hears back on the long-open decision concerning the authenticity of her inherited home's connection to the settlement of the town. Shocked to receive an answer that the society has denied her application, she later runs into the man who'd been helping her make it happen - right before he tells her the letter was a mistake, and then he's mowed down by a speeding truck. Coincidence? I think not... and as the story comes together, Jill is burdened with disaster after disaster. Cahoon makes you love the characters, and readers are invested in the lives and success of each one of them. I hope for happiness in the future, and we got a version of it at the end of this book. Kudos for a well-written installment, and I am eager to take on the next one.
I received an advanced copy of this book from Net Galley and the publisher in return for an honest review. The release date for this book is 30 June 2020
A cute cozy mystery but a little on the predictable side. The book had a great setting and the main character was compelling but the supporting cast felt a bit flat and two dimensional. The story just wasn’t my style. I think I would have enjoyed it more if I had started this series from the beginning. Of course my favorite character was Emma - I am a dog lover after all.
I always look forward to spending some time with Jill and gang Aunt Jackie, Harold, Toby, Greg, and Amy in South Cove. This book included Amy's bachelorette party in Vegas. I thought this somewhat an odd destination for this group, but still fun! The mystery was well written as usual, and yes had me guessing till the end.
I did not care for what felt like a VERY RANDOM new development to the series. Jill's "gift". As a person who is not into paranormal....I hope after 11 books we are not changing directions.
I received an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review. I would like to thank Netgalley, the author Lynn Cahoon, and the publisher for this opportunity.
The Tourist Trap series is one of my favorite series and I always enjoy a visit back to South Cove, California. Jill Gardner, owner of Coffee, Books, and More always has a lot on her plate with local events, her boyfriend and head police detective, Greg King, and usually a murder to solve. When we visit this time, she is acting as maid of honor for her best friend, Amy, planning a bachelorette party in Vegas. Jill's house has a potentially historical wall in her yard and the historical society has been researching it. Unfortunately, her contact at the society is talking to Jill about her case shortly before he is killed by a hit and run. He has an interesting background that leads to lots of possible suspects. On top of that, developers are trying to buy her house to build a water park and someone is trying to run her out of business. She has quite a few questions to solve while maintaining her business, home, and relationships. Is everything connected? This is a mystery that kept me guessing and found the culprit a bit of a surprise at the ending as well as another surprise in Vegas that I had somewhat guessed was going on. Another fun addition to the series. I received a complimentary ARC from Kensington Books and Lyrical Press through NetGalley. All thoughts and opinions are mine only.
Between 2 and 3 stars. I don’t know what it is exactly that I liked less about this one than earlier books in the series, but it just didn’t feel like it reached its full potential. Too much relationship-y stuff went on and while I like to see characters progress, Jill gets on my nerves. First she has a meltdown a few books ago about Greg moving in and now she’s having meltdowns about marrying him and they haven’t even discussed it that seriously? Get over it. Just not a fan of the ass-dragging and moaning about it, I guess. It’s not romantic and Jill frequently comes across as a wishy-washy co-dependent damsel in distress and no one around her calls her out on it, relying on passive-aggressive comments to get her more wishy-washy.
As for the plot, it could’ve been much more intriguing than it ended up being, buried in Jill's relationship crap. By the end of it, I was left wondering what happened to this series? Has it jumped the shark?
I enjoy this series, however, I’m confused with Jill’s new ability to “see”. The author alludes to her abilities, but never really goes anywhere with it. It was touched on in one of the novellas, but again not much happens with it later. I feel like this new ability doesn’t really add anything to the story especially because there is already a few characters with abilities.
Life is crazy for Jill at Coffee, Books & More, otherwise known as CBM, as well as at home, but things take a turn for the worse when someone is out to sabotage her business and try to run her out of her home! Mix in that her best friend is bridezilla on steroids while her Aunt Jackie is who knows where doing who knows what and you have the perfect storm for a perfect plot! These books just keep getting better and better! The characters are realistic and likeable making you feel at home as soon as you start reading the story. I absolutely can't wait to see what is coming in future books for these characters as I am sure that there will be more murder, mayhem, love and friendship to entertain along with laughter and love!
Murder in Waiting by Lynn Cahoon is the 11th novel in A Tourist Trap Mystery series. Jill Gardner has her hands full. Jill is Amy’s maid-of-honor and she had no idea that Amy would become consumed with the wedding. It seems that all Amy can talk about is the wedding (decorations, where to sit people at the reception, linen colors, table decorations). Jill is trying to plan a bachelorette party in Vegas while handling extra duties at work. Aunt Jackie is wrapped up in Harrold and plans for her own upcoming nuptials. Jill must deal with Sabotage, complaining emails, persistent realtors, a travel writer, and a developer. Just after Jill talks with Frank Gleason from the South Cove Heritage Society, a car hits the man and then takes off. Detective Greg King, Jill’s beau, is investigating, but the leads are sparse. I was surprised that Greg accepted Jill’s help (he normally tells her to stay out of the case). Jill digs into Frank’s background and speaks with his first wife. I found Murder in Waiting to be disjointed with so much going on. The mystery tied together in the end (mostly). I wanted it to be the focus not a side story (which is what it felt like to me). Eating seemed to be have a higher priority than the whodunit (there is a lot of food consumed in this book). I then felt the wrap up was rushed with an odd chase scene. The mystery can easily be solved before the solution is revealed. The trip to Vegas seemed so out of character for Amy and Justin who prefer outdoor activities. I am curious how they can afford a $40,000 wedding. A Tourist Trap Mystery series is a character driven. Jill, Aunt Jackie, Toby, Greg, Amy, and the gang are what make this an enjoyable series to read. I do like visiting them in each book to see what they are up to. It is nice to see Aunt Jackie happy with Harrold. Emma, of course, continues to be a highlight. It is wonderful that Jill loves books and reading. I like how it is featured in the series. Jill gets ARCs that she devours and she even comments how she loves the smell of books (I concur). Murder in Waiting can be read as a standalone for those new to A Tourist Trap Mystery series. Murder in Waiting is a blithe cozy mystery with a determined developer, an assertive realtor, a scheming saboteur, party planning problems, work worries, and a bridezilla bestie.
Really enjoyed everything about this book, the fun town, interesting characters, and a fast paced story. I look forward to reading more books in this fun series. I thank Netgalley for the opportunity to read and review this book.
Murder in Waiting by Lynn Cahoon is the 11th addition to her Tourist Trap series and was a delight from beginning to end.
Jill is dealing with a lot in this book, her relationship with Greg, business issues, some one has spread the word that she wants to sell her house and then the mission wall has now been taken off of consideration for preservation. Then there is a murder or is it a tragic accident? A smooth and swiftly paced plot with plenty of twists and more than a few suspects These characters have become like friends to me and I always look forward to my next visit to South Cove. I loved the hint that Deek is saving up to attend a writers retreat in Colorado I think that would be fabulous to see Deek arrive at Cat Latimer's B&B.
I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book from Lyrical Press via NetGalley. All of the above opinions are my own.
I loved everything about the 11th book, Murder in Waiting. I have fallen more in love with the Tourist Trap Mysteries with every book I have read. I do believe the stories have gotten even better but as I watch Jill's life at the book store and her relationship with Greg grow, I become more attached to them and the books. All of the regular characters are well rounded with hopes and problems and love for each other. I am more like Greg than Jill, but author, Lynn Cahoon guides me to understand and appreciate her and look forward to the time I get to spend with her and her team. As well as creating wonderful characters, Ms. Cahoon's mysteries are intriguing and usually offer at least a bit of a twist. This time Jill's world was a greater focus but the murder she witnessed gave her plenty to think about, especially when someone messes with her business and she is not sure if it is related to murder or to the land development project that wants to move into South Cove and needs her property to succeed. Amy's obsession with her wedding provides some distraction for Jill, but even napkin patterns and a bachelorette party can't block out the memory of seeing someone she knows murdered right before her eyes.
“Murder in Waiting” by Lynn Cahoon the 11th instalment in the " A Tourist Trap Mystery" series. I really enjoy this series and this authors other series too.
Visiting South Cove, California and Coffee, Books & More is always a pleasure. I love the main set of characters Jill, Amy, Aunt Jackie, Greg and Toby they feel almost like family now. There was a lot happening with the couples in this instalment but I was happy to see the natural progression in their relationships.
I loved the subtle hint that Deek is saving up to attend a writers retreat in Colorado. I think that would be an awesome crossover between the two series to have him arrive as a quest at Cat Latimer's B&B.
As for the mystery I found it to be well plotted and it moved along at an even pace. There were several suspects for the murder and you find yourself second guessing on who the murder can be. Overall I found this to be a great story.
I highly recommend this series to all my cozy friends.
I requested and received an Advance Reader Copy of this book from Kensington Books and NetGalley. All thoughts and opinions are my OWN.
I always look forward to reading the Tourist Trap Mysteries Series. However, I was disappointed with this one and will consider dropping this series as my “bubble gum for the mind” relaxation. The next one will allow me to decide.
This story is about a bachelorette party for Amy. I found it to delve too deeply into the various relationships. Jill got on my nerves. She was not independent and I found her whiny. It was not a cozy mystery, for me!
I found the story had a great plot but that it got lost in the relationship discussions. I have totally enjoyed this series to date. This one, I found lacking. The next? I anticipate with a little trepidation.
Jill's BFF is getting married, and she is turning into a handful. Not that Jill has done a lot, or even most of what Amy has asked her to help with, but with her bookshop cafe, and general lackadaisical attitude towards weddings, maybe she isn't cut out to be a maid of honor. Before the wedding planning can get too far, Jill finds herself involved in a good old fashioned murder investigation. The problem is, the victim was a man she was counting on to help her establish a historical landmark on her property.
Poor Frank is run down right in front of Jill's bookshop, and she is reasonably certain it was no accident. It doesn't take long for the police to agree. The suspects vary from the easy to understand motives to the more convoluted motives. Jill isn't sure which one to follow. The evidence is scarce; some don't even seem to make sense. Greg suddenly lets jill help with the investigation, which is a complete break from his usual advice to stay out of it. But between the two of them, they manage to find the killer and get justice for Frank.
Murder in Waiting is easy to read, with fleshed-out characters long established. Lynn Cahoon knows her characters inside and out, and she knows her writing her strengths and plays to them at all times. That being said, there are some oddities in this book compared to others in the series. The story is a bit slow and rambles slightly. Even though some of the characters aren't as useful as they have been in the past, and some are outright out of character, I enjoyed this book and happily recommend it to readers of all types.
This series was the first cozy series I had ever read. A few years later I am always excited to read the newest book and this series is still my favourite. Loved the plot and liked the touch of Vegas at the end. Pet Peeve: seems to always say, edition- Kindle. ya no. We're not all on kindle. KOBO.
This read actually has 2 settings: South Cove, California and Las Vegas, Nevada. It’s like having two books in one!
Jill’s mission wall… it has been pending for years now, but this time it appears as though she’ll need to reapply with the historical society because someone cancelled her request for its review.
And Jill has numerous people approaching her telling her they heard she has agreed to sell her house. Some of those people are realtors. Realtors strong arming her into selling. However, Jill isn’t selling and never planned to, so she is on a mission to find out what is going on and who is passing the rumors around.
Between the hounding she witnesses a hit and run of the very man assisting her with getting her mission wall funding approved.
Her best friend, Amy is getting married soon and the pre-wedding party is in Vegas. Jill actually makes it to Vegas, but do you think she’ll get to just party without thoughts of the unsolved murder? Um, no. Luckily Jill spots some of the very people she has questions for when she gets off the plane.
At the end, everything is wrapped up in a pretty bow! Go, Jill and Greg!
There’s also a low carb breakfast recipe at the end and this one looks yummy. 😋
Murder is Waiting is a nice return to the people and places of South Cove and that is where the appeal of this book ends. Unfortunately, the advice Jill Gardner gave to Deek, in regards to writing his book, seems to be true throughout this book. When Deek is struggling with his writing, Jill advises him to just tell the story as it flows, and don’t be worried about an outline, it will all come to you. Which is exactly how this book read. No clear-cut plan and an ending that is abrupt with little leading up to the culprits and how they fully tie together.
Jill is a reluctant maid-of-honor for Amy’s upcoming nuptials, but before the big day she must first turn into a party organizer, figure out why the Heritage Society rejected her bid, fight off a land developer and his army of cohorts, and figure out who killed Frank Gleason. All before leaving for Las Vegas and a bachelorette party that turns into a foot chase and the arrest of two people that the reader lost track of since they made no real impact.
Disjointed from beginning to end, not to mention the inability of the author in keeping track of what a person is eating or how two people who have hourly wage jobs can afford a forty-thousand-dollar wedding. The author needed a major clean up and refocus before this book could ideally hit the mark.
This is the 11th mystery in the Tourist Trap Mysteries series. I have read a few others in the series, but not sequentially and that doesn't really matter. The story is set around Jill, the owner of Coffee, Books, and More. Jill lives with the police chief in their small town of South Cove, CA. Jill has a part of the original town's mission wall on her property and she has been trying to get the wall protected by a historical society.
Jill talks with the man in charge of the certification, and he promises to get things going. Right after that, Jill witnesses him get hit by a car outside her shop. Jill has an unlucky habit of finding dead bodies, and this is no exception.
Jill should be planning her best friend Amy's bachelorette trip to Las Vegas, however she starts investigating the murder instead. I enjoyed this book because this book primarily focused on Jill and her shop, and the comings and goings of South Cove. I would highly recommend to anyone who enjoys a good cozy mystery.
My thanks to the publishers and #NetGalley for an advance copy in exchange for my honest opinion
One of my favorite series by this author. Set in a coastal California town, the main character is the owner of a coffee and books store and finds herself involved in trying to solve murders. This series is a fun read with relatable characters and a pleasant setting. The mysteries are interesting and the solutions satisfying. Perfect!
With Jill's duty as Amy's maid of honor, planning the hen party is a chore she doesn't enjoy. And when Jill witnesses a hit and run in front of Coffee Books and More it looks like the party will take a back seat to Jill's investigating pursuit.
This book is a good read and more than one surprise pops up.
Welcome to South Cove and Jill’s shop, Coffee, Books, & More. Leaving her legal job in the city, moving to South Cove, and opening her shop, was the best decision she ever made. Her new life includes family, friends and employees that have become like family. When a series of events take place, someone targeting her shop, the hit and run of a member of the historical society, and a developer in town pressuring her to sell her home and surrounding land, Jill knows it’s time to get involved. Add to that, planning her best friend’s wedding, a glitch in her relationship with Greg, and Aunt Jackie moving forward in her relationship, Jill’s stress level is high.
Visiting in South Cove is always enjoyable. The small beach town is one I would love to visit and soak up the sand and surf. I envy Jill’s run on the beach with her lab, Emma. The sense of family between the characters draws you in making you feel apart of their life. I am curious to see the direction the subplot may go with many of the characters. There are various suspects that continually kept me guessing. I found myself caught up in the story and anxiously awaiting the outcome. A definite highly recommended series and Murder in Waiting is sure to entertain. I received an advance reader copy from Kensington Books through Netgalley. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Murder in Waiting by Lynn Cahoon is the 11th addition to her Tourist Trap series and my very first read in the series. I really enjoyed the cast of characters in this one. I liked that the author gave a bit of back story to some of the events that had happened previously so that new readers like myself were not lost. I especially enjoyed the twists and turns in this mystery. All of the events certainly kept me on my toes. The only complaint I have is the ending felt pretty rushed and not as well developed as the rest of the story. I would have like to have seen a bit more finesse in the execution of the ending. However, the ending did not take away from my enjoyment of the entire novel and I look forward to reading more books in this series.
Thank You to NetGalley and the Publisher for a free copy in exchange for an honest review.
Things are quite busy for Jill, Amy's wedding is coming up and as maid of honor or only is she helping out with wedding related tasks she also has to plan a fun bachelorette party. Then there is an influx of developers looking to buy her land which she has no intentions of selling. When her application to the society is denied Jill wonders if she should continue on with the process of just throw up her hands and let it go. She decides to talk to Frank a part of the society but before she gets the chance he is involved in a bit and run and ends up dying at the scene. Jill saw the whole thing and it has her shaken to the core. Jill has so many worries going on right now but she can't let that stop her from finding Frank's killer. Murder In Waiting Tourist Trap Mysteries, Book # 11 Lynn Cahoon 5 Stars

Review:
The characters are well rounded and well developed. Jill has a lot going on, with running Coffee, Books & More, trying to get a historic landmark recognized and being Amy’s maid-of-honor and all that that entails. When someone is killed in a hit-and-run accident, she adds finding the killer to her list of must-do things. And Aunt Jackie has been acting very strange, so Jill needs to figure out what she is up to.
The writing style flows smoothly and the book is an easy read. The author is very talented in her descriptive writing and these descriptions pulled me into the story right from the very beginning. I felt like I was right there in South Cove, watching all of the action taking place. The mystery was well plotted and there were plenty of clues to sift through and suspects to consider. And if that is not enough for you, there is Amy’s wedding and Aunt Jackie’s secret to figure out.
I would highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a well crafted cozy mystery. Whenever you read a book by this author, you are in for a real treat.
I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book provided by the publisher, Kensington Books, and NetGalley, which I greatly appreciate.
Murder in Waiting earns 5/5 Escaped Sea Lions...Entertaining Fun!
“No matter what they teach you in high-school, it turns out not everyone can do everything” —Jill Gardner, Murder in Waiting.
Lynn Cahoon has penned another compelling drama with an entertaining look into small towns, land developers, city councils, walls, coffee, books, and murder. Jill has been trying to get the Historical Society to approve her home as a historical spot, yet the official letter sites budget constraints and suggests she reapply next year. The last remaining wall of the South Cove Mission in her backyard and their siting budget! Later Jill is seen by Frank Gleason from the Society, frantic, he questioned whether Jill had seen the letter. After letting him have a big piece of her mind, he says, “Just ignore the letter,” along with “Just don’t do anything stupid.” Jill apologizes for her outburst and thanks Frank. Then from the window of her bookshop, Jill sees Frank standing by his car, animated on his phone, then sideswiped by a black truck...Frank is dead!
The fate of the “Mission Wall” is one key to this story, and sides are drawn between preservation and progress. At first, motive seems obvious, but I’ve read enough Cahoon books to know, my first thoughts always need revising. The murder mystery had plenty of twists, misdirections, and a “Watch out!” ending. Threats. Greed. Abductions. Secrets. Lies. All in the life of a cozy “Tourist Trap” Mystery. Lynn uses a first-person narrative from Jill’s perspective sharing her memories, worries, and inner thoughts to paint a picture of a strong, caring female character who has more intuition (Esmeralda thinks psychic abilities) if she’d just let it flow. Lynn’s writing style incorporates descriptive language to set scenes, appearances, and tone and realistic dialogue to illustrate emotions and personalities. It’s definitely a can’t miss page-turner...all the way to the end! Recipe included...Enjoy Easy, Low-Carb Egg Muffins; prepared ahead of time, then microwaved, and served with fresh fruit.
Disclosure: I received an ARC from the Kensington/Lyrical thru NetGalley. My review is voluntary with honest insights and comments.
It is always a pleasure to read Lynn Cahoon’s Tourist Trap series. And Murder in Waiting, the eleventh installment, is no exception. Like its predecessors, Murder in Waiting is the perfect blend of a hometown story and a compelling mystery.
Jill Gardner, proprietress of Coffee, Books, & More is feeling stressed on two fronts. Not only does she find out that her application to designate her wall as a historical landmark has been abruptly rejected, but planning her best friend’s bachelorette party raises concerns about her own relationship with Greg. Things quickly spiral from bad to worse when Frank Gleason, a member of the Heritage Society, is run down moments after revealing that Jill’s rejection was a mistake and her petition will be considered after all. Determined to find Frank’s killer and get to the bottom of the mystery surrounding her application, Jill races against the clock juggling both investigations with Amy’s Vegas bachelorette party preparations.
If Murder in Waiting is any indication, the Tourist Trap series will just keep getting better and better. Jill, Greg, Aunt Jackie, and company feel like old friends, and South Cove seems the perfect destination (minus the murders, of course). The mystery surrounding Frank’s murder and the related Heritage Society snafu is sophisticated and complex, full of unexpected twists and turns, intriguing subplots, and colorful characters. And It’s nice to see Jill taking her relationship with Greg more seriously.
Murder in Waiting is a sure-fire winner. And with its June release, it will make an excellent summer beach read. The only downside is that I have to wait (impatiently) for the next installment to be published.
Note: I received an ARC of Murder in Waiting from NetGalley and Kensington Books. The above is my honest review.
