Evocative, atmospheric, at times profound, this collection of fictions, poems, reminiscences, and critiques are at once nostalgic, wistful, and penetrating. Individual streets, suburbs, and communities are the backdrops of keen observations. The Hong Kong of distant and recent past are portrayed magically. I have visited the great majority of the locales in the book and their descriptions bring back delectable memories. As many of the things described are no more, the book has an indescribable poignancy percolating it. I do find some of the poems too cryptic to my taste. Four stars.
