The tearing of flesh, the pulsing of blood...these things haven't aroused anything other than simple hunger in Joseph for centuries. But now he's caught the scent of a creature no more human than he is, and his hunger has turned to desire.
Author and artist Jordan Castillo Price writes paranormal sci-fi thrillers colored by her time in the Midwest, from inner city Chicago, to various cities across southern Wisconsin. She’s settled in a 1910 Cape Cod near Lake Michigan with tons of character and a plethora of bizarre spiders. Any disembodied noises, she’s decided, will be blamed on the ice maker.
Jordan is best known as the author of the PsyCop series, an unfolding tale of paranormal mystery and suspense starring Victor Bayne, a gay medium who's plagued by ghostly visitations.
With only 16 pages, Jordan Castillo Price managed to outline a pair of MCs and the start of a relationship in a way that feels fresh and surprisingly complete for such a short story. It’s even more impressive given that this was the first story she ever published, but not surprising, coming from the PsyCop series' author. Content warning for
Too bad it was so short. I want to see them build a relationship. Curious how they would deal with the fact Danny kills his victims, while Joe doesn't. I assume Danny is picking innocent people and not, like, bad people. If he is killing and eating bad people, I'm good. 😊
I really enjoyed this short story. It was quite hot. I love Price's take on vampires and I was glad to take another glimpse on her supernatural creatures, this time with the addition of werewolves.
I say it anytime I read these shorts by JCP... I want more. This is the story of what happens when a vampire and werewolf meet and find themselves attracted to one another.
It was too short to really get a handle on the characters or what they are... A quick read.
Werewolf: “Your hands are cold.” Vampire: “Get used to it.” I like that line! This was a trifle of a short story with just two characters and a sparse plot line, but it packed a punch. I would like to have read more about the relationship between a smart ass werewolf and a loner vampire who is smitten with him, and surprised about it. Good writing and some hot sex, mixed with monster gore. 🤢 Read at Prolific Works.
As JCP says in her newsletter, where there's a link to download this short story for free: "Revisiting Starlight recently to update the cover, I found the prose a little purple. But since the main character, Joseph, is a century old vampire, I’ll allow it."
4 stars. Loved the writing style in this. Also it was really hot. A wolf shifter and a vampire meet as they’re hunting and things get sexy. The humor was also great and snappy. I want more of these two desperately! Also, this was my first read by Price! I have so many of her books and for some reason have never read them. I think this was a pretty good place to start to get a taste of her writing. I’m excited to continue on with other books now.
Stop me if you’ve heard this one before: an omega shifter about to go into heat meets up with a vampire, and incubus and a wolf shifter… Seriously, that is the setup for this story. The story is a scene of lots of sexual gymnastics, and it’s pretty good.
The author managed to build a story and the beginnings of a relationship in 16 short pages. Smartass Lupen and a loner Vampire obsessed with him. I wish this story was longer to see more of their relationship develop and live in their banter.
