The task of choosing the right prostate cancer treatment is daunting. It is further complicated by conflicting information the patient receives from physicians and the Internet. This book is written by a prostate cancer survivor who now runs an international prostate cancer support group. It’s about his journey and the important things he learned along the way. It is the book the author wishes had been available when he was diagnosed 6 years ago. It is intended to provide specific information for men who are at risk or have been recently diagnosed with prostate cancer. All major treatment options are examined and the pros and cons of each are summarized. A relatively new, non-invasive, highly effective treatment is highlighted. It is an option that cures cancer as well as any other option, but generally leaves the patient with a higher quality of life and fewer, if any, side effects. This book has been endorsed by several physicians as well as other highly respected people from all walks of life.
A very well written book about a subject that every men over 50 should read. prostate cancer is common among men and there are many options to cure that a single doctor would not let you know. This book addressed all of them and give the reader the knowledge to investigate further.
My review of this book is predicated on my husband's medical history. You must first understand that he was diagnosed with prostate cancer (Gleason Score-8; PSA Score- 114) in late 2005. His urologist (I can write another whole blog on urologist and their undying advocacy of surgery!) gave me a medical manual to read: Complete Guide to Prostate Cancer by the American Cancer Society. Very good book if you are familiar with a tremendous number of medical terms and have the mind of a chemist or engineer. Bob Marckini's book, on the other hand, is what most men and their wives need (read it first!) before making any decisions whatsoever about treatment for prostate cancer!!! His book is written for the common man with warmth, compassion and some humor. Bob Marckini unravels the unbelievable tangle of treatment options and tests without bogging the reader down in a web of molecular biology and genetics, etc. I strongly encourage all men and/or their wives who are currently faced with decisions about prostate cancer to read this book before anything else and I highly recommend "PROTON" radiation treatment. Find out why by reading Bob Marckini's book. PS: 1 in 6 men will develop prostate cancer in their lifetime. Read the book with that thought in mind and get informed even if you don't currently have prostate cancer.
There is no doubt in my mind that proton radiation therapy is the only way to treat prostate cancer. I had the treatment for my cancer at LLUMC in 2006. My PSA has been at 0.4 since my treatment and I've had no negative side effects. If you've got PC or some one you know has it, don't let them do anything until they've read this book.
Excellent book for anyone considering a proven alternative to traditional surgical RP or RALP procedures to beat prostate cancer without the traumatic quality of life side effects that the majority of surgical candidates experience.
