Both of them have vowed from the bottom of their broken hearts never to love again.
Sweet Naomi Byler cooks meals for the guests at The Peony Inn, where Amish sisters and owners of the inn Esther and Lizzie love her like a granddaughter. She’s as happy there as a young woman can be, considering that her fiancé, Thomas, has left her to court someone else. She knows she’ll get over the love of her life in due time, but she assumes marriage will never be a part of her future.
Amos Lantz and his mother are guests at the inn, visiting town for a cousin’s wedding. Attending a wedding is the last thing Amos wants to do since his own fiancée, Sarah, died tragically just a year ago.
Naomi and Amos understand each other’s grief and become quick friends when they discover their mutual love of painting. As the two begin to paint through their sadness together, Esther and Lizzie play matchmaker—a risky move with the potential to backfire. And when Thomas makes an unexpected return intending to win back Naomi, she realizes she no longer knows her own heart.

This is an Amish book, and it is the first book in the Amish Inn series. All the characters are really developed, and I loved that the Amish sisters fights so much. This book made me happy and laugh. There was parts I wish was better developed, but I loved the story line. I received an ARC of this book. This review is my own honest opinion about the book like all my reviews are.
The Amish romance you expect with colorful supporting characters that add interest and energy. Contrary to other reviewers, I found the pacing to be slow and the story not all that engaging, hence my average rating. It's pleasant enough with a touch of humor and sass, but not a storyline that truly captured my interest.
Naomi Byler lives with Lizzie and Esther and is like a granddaughter to them, as she helps them run the Peony Inn. This is an Amish Inn catering to Amish and English visitors. Naomi does most of the cooking. She has had her heart broken by Thomas, her fiancé who thenleft saying he wasn’t reading for marriage. Amos Lanz is from Ohio and he and his mother are guests at the inn for a cousin’s Naomi Byler lives with Lizzie and Esther and is like a granddaughter to them, as she helps them run The Peony Inn. This Amish Inn caters to Amish and English visitors. Naomi does most of the cooking. She has had her heart broken by Thomas, her fiancé who then left her saying he wasn’t ready for marriage. Amos Lanz is from Ohio and he and his mother are guests at the inn for a cousin’s wedding. This is the last thing Amos wants to do as it brings back memories of his fiancée Sarah who died twelve months earlier. Naomi and Amos both understand only too well loss and grief. This draws them into a friendship. A love of painting is another bond between them. Gus Evans also lives in a cottage on the property. Esther and Lizzie’s mother has said he must be able to live in the cottage as a tenant for all of his life. They have no idea why. He is a grumpy old recluse who annoys the sisters. Yet Esther tries to help him. Lizzie and Esther are an interesting pair. Lizzie with her dentures which she hates and Esther who has her health concerns. They try constantly to matchmake with Naomi and Amos and come up with a plan of handyman jobs to keep him at the property longer. Naomi and Amos are lovely characters and the sisters are hilarious with some of their antics and attempt to matchmake. But will it work? Or is Naomi still mourning Thomas and hoping he will come back. And what will happen if he does? This is a sweet tale because the characters are so good. Perhaps a tad predictable but still enjoyable. I loved the humour added by Lizzie, her dentures and her antics as well as Esther’s story and the changes with grumpy Gus, but it is really Naomi and Amos who take centre stage and draw the reader in. A good easy read that entertained and involved me, this is book 1 in a series about the Amish Inn. Interested enough to read more.
Beth Wiseman has done it again! I have read A Beautiful Arrangement by Beth and I didn’t hesitate to request for another of her newest book from Zondervan through NetGalley.
Esther and Lizzie are such two dears!
Naomi and Amos, two characters who gave up on love. Their stories were so emotional and the book had the power for you to be patient while you read and dig deeper into the plot.
Another favourite genre of mine is the Amish Christian Fiction genre. I just don’t know how to turn the other side whenever I see an Amish novel.
The themes in this book are so educating.
I won’t stop emphasising on the Amish food. I love how much preparation goes towards a meal whether it is simple or for large gatherings.
If I ever go to an Amish community, the first thing I will order is an Apple pie. I have noticed how common it is in my Amish novels.
I love the book. I highly recommend it for lovers of second chances.
I received a complimentary copy of this book from Zondervan through NetGalley. Opinions expressed in this review are mine.
Beth Wiseman’s A Picture of Love will delight readers of Amish fiction. Naomi and Amos’s romance is a heartfelt story of love, forgiveness, and second changes. This book has everything readers love about a Beth Wiseman’s story—an authentic portrait of the Amish community, humor, the power of grace and hope and, above all, faith in God’s Word and His promises.
A Picture of Love by Beth Wiseman is the debut of The Amish Inn Novels. This was an entertaining Amish story. I found it to be well-written with the story moving along at a steady pace. The characters are developed and lively. Lizzie and Esther are a hoot. I just love the widowed sisters who know each other’s foibles and bicker frequently. They are as opposite as two sisters can be (remind me of my sister and myself). Neither one had children and they consider Naomi Byler a granddaughter. They care for her dearly and want to see her happy again. There are some things Lizzie would love to do to Thomas, Naomi’s ex-fiancé. When Amos arrives, the sisters notice how he looks at Naomi. The sisters decide to give the pair a little push (sometimes a shove) towards love. There are a couple of side stories in A Picture of Love. Esther is having some physical symptoms that have her worried. As much as she dislikes doctor’s, Esther knows she must bite the bullet. Esther gets help from their grumpy renter, Gus Owens. She works a deal out for his help. Lizzie cannot stand Gus Owens. Lizzie and Gus trade verbal barbs quite often (they are hilarious). It turns out that Gus has a daughter he has not seen in over thirty years. She has decided to visit, so Gus wants to spruce up his appearance (it needs it). Mary and John Lapp rent the Dawdi Haus on the property. They have been married five years and unable to conceive. It has begun to affect their marriage. The Thomas situation left me with a few questions that I wish had been answered. I loved the humor in the story. I liked that A Picture of Love was not a traditional Amish romance. I laughed often while reading this amusing tale especially the scene with Lizzie and the kitten. Lizzie provided several laugh-out-loud moments for me. I liked that in A Picture of Love we get to see that you never know what God has in store for you. A Picture of Love is a story of forgiveness, second chances, faith, God’s timing, and love. This was a delightful and engaging story, and I am eager to read the next book in The Amish Inn Novels. A Picture of Love is a diverting Amish story with picture painting, merry matchmaking, pie payment, a cute kitten, hair help, and sister shenanigans.
I received a complimentary copy of this book from Zondervan through NetGalley. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
This story was so touching on so many different levels. People underestimate the power of a commonality and in this case for Esther and Lizzie, it was painting. Both are widows that own and operate a B&B in Southern Indiana, love to play matchmaker with their friends and loved ones. It wasn't until Naomi moves into the B&B after breaking up with her fiance that their matchmaking power truly made a difference. Then here comes Amos who is just mending a broken heart as well. Then even when love seems unreal, it always comes back like a boomerang. This book is perfect to read if you are in the mood for a book version of a chick flick. Christian Fiction does very well in our collection and our community loves them.
We will consider adding this title to our Christian Fiction collection at our library. That is why we give this book 5 stars.
This was a great book to read. I enjoyed how both Amos and Naomi used painting as a start to their friendship. The characters of Lizzie, Esther and Gus were super memorable as well. Definitely a great read!
Thanks to netgalley and the publisher for the arc!
Naomi has been all but left at the altar when her fiance left her before their wedding. Amos lost his fiancee to cancer. Neither feel they are in a position to open their hearts to love.
Naomi is the cook and housekeeper for Peony Inn, run by sisters Esther and Lizzie. Lizzie is what in some parlances would be called a "loose cannon." She says what she feels without a filter between thought and spoken words. Both Esther and Lizzie are match-making meddlers. There are a host of other characters that populate this book by Beth Wiseman and make it the entertaining read that it is.
One thing that Amos and Naomi have in common is that they both love to paint landscapes. Esther and Lizzie believe they will make the perfect couple and invent reasons for Amos to stay behind and do some work for them so that Amos and Naomi can get to know each other better, and even fall in love.
The road to love is never without its bumps and potholes, and Beth has worked that into the book with the reappearance of Naomi's ex-fiance.
This is quite an enjoyable book that engages the reader from the very first page all the way through to the very end. Five stars, two thumbs up, and a perfect landscape painting for your wall.
Zondervan Fiction and NetGalley.com provided the copy I read for this review. All opinions expressed are my own.
This is a fun story to read with sweet loving characters and a grumpy older man, Gus, who resided in a cabin near the Peony Inn. Lizzie, Esther and Naomi are always busy with their activities and keeping things going at the inn. Lizzie and Esther had long loving marriages and want their sweet employee Naomi to find her love after being jilted. When Amos and his mother stay at the inn they believe Amos is just the one for Naomi. Naomi and Amos both are recovering from their broken hearts but find a connection with their love to paint landscapes. The matchmaking schemes by Esther and Lizzie along with unexpected friendship building between Esther and Gus made this a pleasure to read.
I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher, Zondervan, through NetGalley and was under no obligation to write a positive review. I have shared my own opinion.
A Picture of Love is an amazing story written by Beth Wiseman. This story is filled with love, loss, heartbreak, forgiveness, and second chances. The characters are very likeable and strong-willed which add to their personalities. The cover of this book will definitely draw the reader into the story. The storyline is well thought-out and takes a lot of unexpected turns which will keep the readers interest. I enjoyed getting to know each of the characters stories even Grumpy Gus. He adds so much to this story. I also enjoyed the two widowed sisters Elsie and Lizzie. They are very loveable even when they lock loved ones in the basement. Naomi and Amos have both loved and lost and have closed off their hearts until they discover a mutual interest in painting. God is definitely working throughout this entire story in each one of the characters. The humor the author adds to her story is perfect. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this wonderful story.
I was not given a complimentary copy of this book to read and review. I was not approached to post a favorable response and all opinions are my own. I have rated this story with five stars for meeting my expectations of a wonderful story that I can highly recommend to others.
Congratulations to Beth Wiseman on writing and releasing another inspiring story for her readers enjoyment.
What a fun Amish read. You have to love how Ms Wiseman balances humor with an in depth story that leaves you feeling warm and smiling. I absolutely loved Gus and his grumpy disposition that starts to mellow. I hope we see more of him in the future books to this new Amish Inn series. The characters worm their way into your heart and make them seem like family. I liked that Naomi and Amos were out of the box with their love of painting which made them seem more relatable. The sisters Esther and Lizzie were delightful and quirky and the word descriptions of them made my imagination picture them. I had a smile on my face for hours after finishing. It was like a refreshing breath of air reading this in these troubling times. This book shows to never give up on someone, to have hope that the best is yet to come, to find friendship in unexpected places, and that second chances do exist. I highly recommend even if you aren’t an Amish fan. #mustread I received a complimentary copy from the author/publisher. The honest review and opinions are my own and were not required.
This takes place in Indiana. The story is about Amos and Naomi finding love again. They start as friends, and I liked seeing the relationship progress. There is a bit of drama there. I liked the relationship between Ester and Gus. I am curious to see where it goes. The story also has some humor in it.
Esther & Lizzie Zook are two elderly sisters who live together in their Bed & Breakfast. They have both been recently widowed. Naomi Byler is a young Amish girl who moves in with them after a recent breakup with her fiance, Thomas. Amos Lantz & his mom come to stay at the B & B to attend a wedding. Amos has also recently gone through a major heartbreak as his fiance, Sarah, recently passed away. Amos & Naomi strike up a friendship & grow increasingly closer through their shared love of painting. They have a night where they paint landscape canvases together & through this, they become more than friends. One evening as they are getting ready to kiss, Thomas, Naomi's former fiance, shows up & tells her he really does love her & will never leave her again (even though he has taken up with another woman after he left Naomi). Naomi has to do a lot of soul-searching and figure out what she wants and who she wants.
As all of this is going on, Lizzie is also dealing with some major health issues & she works to mend the fence between she & her sister & their neighbor, Gus, who has always been a thorn in their side.
I loved this book & it held my attention to the very end! I am a big fan of Beth Wiseman as an author also.
Thank you to the publisher, Zondervan, and Net Galley for the opportunity to read an advanced copy of this book. This is my total and unbiased opinion.
A delightful new series by the author! I can’t wait to read the future books.
We are introduced to Esther and Lizzie, elderly sisters who run The Peony Inn. Their niece, Naomi, who they have “adopted” lives with them, doing the cooking for the inn. We also meet the grumpy man, “Grumpy” Gus, who lives on the property, and Thomas, Naomi’s former fiancé, who canceled their engagement and left town.
Guests who visit the inn for a wedding, Amos Lantz and his mother, play a big part in this book. Amos lost his fiancé to cancer and really had no desire to attend a wedding, as he is still nursing a broken heart. He and Naomi share the stories of their broken hearts and learn they have a common love of painting. They both have vowed to never become involved in another relationship and feel they can become friends without worrying about it developing into anything more.
Fun reading with many fun interactions, along with heart-wrenching interactions between all these different characters makes for very enjoyable reading that I didn’t want to put down until I had completely finished the book.
I highly recommend this book to all. I received a complimentary copy of this book from Zondervan through NetGalley. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
Gosh! This book was just too cute! So very entertaining and it's definitely a laugh out loud book too! Grumpy Gus is quite the character and in many ways he's the one who has made this book a delightful read! Along with Lizzie of course! Put these two together and what do you get? Well, I'll just let you read this book to find out. Believe me, you'll get a kick out if these two lol! The one I felt sorry for was Esther. I liked Esther immediately! She reminded me of my father in law always the peacekeeper. In my opinion the author has done a wonderful job in rounding out each of these characters. I felt that I was just getting to know them when the story ended. I couldn't believe the book ended so quickly! I guess because I was into the story so much that I didn't realize how time flew. This is one of Wiseman's best yet. I enjoyed it very much! I highly recommend! My thanks to Netgalley and Zondervan for a complimentary copy of this book. I was NOT required to write a positive review and all opinions are my own.
Beth Wiseman novels are a staple in my Amish reading diet and I'm excited about this new series centered around an Amish inn and the meddlesome septuagenarian sisters who run it.
In fact, I'll happily admit that Esther and Lizzie hijacked the story for me. Their good-natured bickering and well-intentioned romantical interference lightened the more serious aspects of Amos and Naomi's personal lives. Plus, there's a great sub-plot involving the sisters' interactions with a cantankerous neighbour which was hilarious and touching by turns. So, yay for more Esther and Lizzie shenanigans in future books.
I love the art aspect to this romance (and clever title tie-in, by the way.) It's an unusual twist for an Amish novel but provides a unifying backdrop for Amos and Naomi to not only connect with each other but to figure their way out of their grief-stricken state.
Angst and humour abound courtesy of memorable characters and both predictable and unpredictable plot twists. A thoroughly enjoyable second chance at romance love story with a whole lot more besides.
A sweet, clean story of Naomi Byler, who meets Amos Lantz, and both of them begin a friendship as brokenhearted people with sad stories to tell. Naomi was engaged to Thomas, who left her and their Amish community, without looking back. Naomi was of course devastated. Amos had been engaged to Sarah, but she had cancer and died. So neither one was looking for a romantic relationship, which made their friendship grow easily.and quickly. Then Thomas returns, adding confusion to the mix. Naomi takes him back for a while, but she can't find a way to trust him again. The two ladies she works for are not related to her, but they love her like a granddaughter, and they get mixed into the relationship between Naomi and Amos, which causes some humorous situations. Great book!
I have always enjoyed Beth Wiseman's books. I am trying to read books that have been on my TBR for quite a while, which led me to A Picture of Love.
Lauren Berst did great with the audio narration and bringing the story to life.
I understand Amish marry young (in stories) but for Naomi to barely be twenty-five and sure she would never marry was a little ridiculous. At that age, there is so much life left, and when Amos enters the picture she is sure they can never be more than friends.
I appreciate that overall the story was pretty light. I loved Esther, Lizzie, and even Gus's shenanigans and spirited personalities. Although it was a predictable story, it was an enjoyable listen.
This is the first novel of Beth Wiseman's series, An Amish Inn. It's a fun read, it really is. There are serious moments, too. Mostly, though, a nice, clean, lighthearted story about Naomi Byler and Amos Lantz, mostly, but we also have Esther and Lizzie, 2 older Amish sisters who own and run The Peony Inn. Esther Zook and Lizzie Glick, both widows, are amusing in their relationships with each other, and additional individuals you'll meet. Lizzie is all spitfire and forthright, Esther is more reserved and diplomatic. Their neighbor, Gus, is a character I'd like to know a lot more about. Naomi works at the Peony Inn, and lives there with Esther and Lizzie. She is recovering from a serious boyfriend who jilted her, and is not looking for another relationship. The sisters, though, try over and over to play matchmaker with her, and so far, have failed. I found insight, depth, and also a good amount of humor, some of it is laugh-out-loud funny, too! This novel touches on some serious issues, and I hope Beth Wiseman elaborates on some of them, maybe in another book. Gus is keeping a secret, something between the sister's mother and himself. A neighbor Mary, and her husband, John, can't conceive, and the wife is showing signs of depression. There's also the deep thinking of Amos, a guest at the Inn. I was struck hard by something he said, which was how many days Naomi had lived so far, and how do we SPEND the days, the hours of our life? Each moment is gone in a flash, each day becomes the past, and what good have we done with those days, weeks, years, that God has graciously allowed us to have on this earth? The author is very talented, and skillful at bringing important, vitally important subjects up, and making the reader think, ponder. Beth intersperses her book with mentions of God and prayer, compassion and kindness in her characters. I do recommend this book. Romans 10:9-13
How do you mend a broken heart? Naomi Byler is mending a broken heart when her fiancé suddenly left 4 months ago. Not giving a reason for the breakup. All she knows is she can't love again. With both her parents passed, she now lives with two colorful Amish sisters who run a bed and breakfast. They look to Naomi as their own granddaughter and want the best for her. They have made some hilarious attempts for Naomi to find love again. God is on their side when Amos and his mother are visiting for an Amish wedding. Amos is suffering from a different broken heart, he lost a beloved to cancer.
The two open up to each other because they have laid the out their hearts that they cannot love again. This act frees them up to really know each other. They both find out that they share a passion for painting and discover a deeper sense of being known and seen. Just when they begin to draw closer to each other, Naomi fiancé comes back. Feelings becomes misunderstood until their love of painting shows them the way.
The characters were very endearing. An honesty of our worst feelings and fears. I enjoyed getting to know these characters and how they overcame their pain. One of the best from Beth Wiseman
A special thank you to Zondervan and Netgalley for the ARC and the opportunity to post an honest review.
Naomi works at the Peony Inn for two sisters who are like family to her, she has been burned in love before but when a man who shares her appreciation for art comes to lend a hand at the inn she finds herself rethinking everything.
Lizzie and Esther are two widowed sisters who run an inn together, and dabble in matchmaking. I loved their sisterly squabbles and teasing, and they were my favorite characters of the book. Lizzie's spirited ways made me laugh, and I admired Esther's determination and compassion.
This is a fast read, set in a charming Amish community, with fun larger than life characters. I loved how Amos and Naomi got to know each other through a shared hobby, and both were able to open up to each other as they got to know each other. One of my favorite relationships in this book though was the burgeoning friendship between Gus and Esther, with all their bargaining and bickering.
Overall, a highly enjoyable read, with engaging characters, dialogue, strong themes of friendship and forgiveness. I can't wait to visit the Peony Inn again soon!
I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
I won A Picture of Love by Beth Wiseman through a giveaway by TNZ Fiction. The book was different in the way the Amish were portrayed than other books I've read with the Amish as the main characters and it was a good difference. It was a beautiful story of second chances at love and how the right person can light up your life and lift your spirits. I really enjoyed A Picture of Love and I enjoyed getting to know the characters, Naomi and Amos, Esther and Lizzie and even Grumpy Gus, who I believe as Esther does, is a good man at heart. I am definitely looking forward to the next book in this new series by Beth Wiseman so I can get to know the characters better and see if Gus and Lizzie have learned to get along.
I love Beth Wiseman books, this one was no exception. I really enjoyed the storyline of two people who were genuinely hurt by people they loved, One voluntarily and the other was a loss. But they both learn to fall in love again. They seem to bring color back into one another lives,,they both loved painting and spent time together that way. It brought them closer and the ending was so sweet and i loved it.
Oh my goodness. I can already tell this is going to be a wonderful series and I can’t wait for book two!
Author Beth Wiseman writes a story that will keep you laughing and will tug at your heart strings. It might even get your ire up, as it did with me at times. But I read it as quickly as I could, partly to see what sisters Esther and Lizzie would do next. Throw in a rapscallion for a neighbor as well as an errant boyfriend and you have a recipe for trouble.
If you enjoy Amish fiction then I highly recommend this book. Full of hope, faith, and humor I thoroughly enjoyed it.
I received a complimentary copy of this book but was not required to leave a review.
This was so much fun to read! These sisters are a hoot and they keep you on your toes. This book brought all my emotions to the surface. I can't wait to read #2!
